Hi,
I have to apologize for some of these trivial questions. I don't have much IT experience.
I am located in Montana and have an older TP link modem/router which I plan to update very soon. My Internet has been dropping for the last year. It may stay online for hours or it may drop every half hour.
I ran a speed test and it came back at 26ms ping, 6.1 down and .701 up. I would like find out if there is anything I can do to speed things up a bit? I requested centurylinks 12mbps plan but not even sure that is available in my area.
I purchased the ASUS RT AC68U router but do not have a modem yet. I've been reading about folks bridging their ADSL2+ modem with separate router and wanted to know if this is something that might improve my Internet connection/speed?
If I were to bridge with the ASUS modem, would you have any recommendations on which modem would work best in this case?
Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks you in advance,
Jason

[CenturyTel] Bad service after 3pm since November
After 3 in the afternoon the internet becomes unusable. This is my speed when it starts acting up. http://i.imgur.com/c4YcjC2.png
This is around 8 in the evening when everyone should be watching the superbowl. Not a big improvement. https://i.imgur.com/qCQtcYn.png and it will stay this way up to 1-2 in the morning. And this is everyday not just selected days. The morning at 5 is the best time
Centurylink admits that there have been bandwidth problems in my area since early november. They dont deny it but yet they are dragging their feet to repair it. This has been going on for a lot longer then that. Ive been unable to enjoy any netflix it wont stream it just spins loading. Remoting in for work is difficult unless I use my cell service which isnt all the greatest either. Sometimes I get signal other times I get none at all.
Everyone that I have spoke to in my neighborhood expresses their dissatisfaction with the service but there isn't anything we can do about it except wait it out or cancel. There are no providers were we live. No one should have to pay for this kind of service. 10Mbps is all that is available in my area.

Does anyone have promo pricing on 60/30?
I believe the normal pricing for 60/30 is $99/month. Several months ago, I was told that there were no promotional discounts on this price.
Does anyone have the 60/30 tier at a cheaper price?

[Qwest] 40/20 Initial Impressions
My place closed and I'm in it now, empty, with just my Mac mini and a new C1000a.
At first I couldn't get connected. I'm on the test jack at the demarc now, I'll have to see what I can do with the wiring, because I think something's wrong there.
Nevertheless: The modem syncs at exactly 40/20 and at the jack, the signal is pretty good. SNRs are 15 down and 18 up. xdslctl info says that I'm trained up using the 12A profile. Its guess for max speed is 65/40, which would confirm the recent theory that 60/30 on a single pair should be fine if you're close.
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/300018 is an initial speedtest for this service, but it's also like 6:30 p.m. and I'm on wifi, in an MDU/townhome/apartment complex, so the 2.4GHz spectrum is totally messed up. I wouldn't at all be surprised if that gets a little better when I find an Ethernet cable and wire everything in.
I'll come up with some different thoughts, etc at some point over the next few days.
One thought: should I update my existing review or add a new one for this service, at a new location? Is there a site convention for that? I'm tempted to put it in as a new review, because I ordered new service (CoreConnect.)

What's Going On With CenturyLink Internet?
My DSL has been out since just before noon yesterday and CenturyLink's Service Troubleshooter tool is showing a known outage in my area that should have been resolved an hour ago. Looking at the outage map on downdetector.com shows all sorts of problems being reported, particularly in Arizona. Anyone else having problems or know what's up?
Edit: to include that it's been down since yesterday.

Don't worry, scro. There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick-ass lives.

Bonding Help/making two connections into one
Ok so i have to have a min. of 5m up and 1m down because of job....well Centurylink in my area offers 10down but only 765K up...i get about .65 when i do the speed test. So i contacted the talktous team and this is what he says.... "Your max available speed is 10M down, 768k up. The technology itself that provides internet to your location is ADSL2+ and has a max download speed of about 1M up, but our speed tiers are set so that 768k is the highest and theres no way to override that. The only real option I can suggest is for you to get a 2nd DSL line with 10M up, 768k and then purchasing a third-party modem that can bond the 2 lines together. "
So my question is...is there anyone who known what i need to do? If i have a second line of service in my home and i get a special modem that can link those two into one connection to essentially double my speeds, what do i need to do? Step by step instructions please!!!! This has to be done by 4/13/15 if possible.
I am not sure if i just hook the two phone lines into the modem i am to buy or if my two CL modems would hook into my bonded modem to make one...then what if anything would i need to change on my CL modems to make all this work? Any help would be appreciative as i don't want to loose my job over this!!!!
Thanks,
Billy

Q1000 working on 2 differents lines/locations??
I live in Colorado in the summer and Arizona in the winter. I have Centurylink DSL accounts in both locations and move my Q1000 modem back and forth. I have a different ppp username and password in each location.
Right now, my Arizona line is active and my Colorado line on vacation hold.
I just returned to Colorado. When I plugged in my Q1000 (still with Arizona username and password) I am able to access the internet. This has happened previously.
Am I on the Arizona line? Could you explain?

1 Gig Slow - but techs on it - Columbia, MO
Feels very awkward to complain when only getting 250 mbps down and 50 mbps up - but that is only 25% and 5% retrospectively of what is expected.
Anyone in the Columbia, MO area on 1 gig service - know that CenturyLink has a known issue and advises it will be corrected by 3/31/15.

Android Wi-Fi bars not turning blue = problem with Google Sync?
Over the weekend and all last week I noticed that whenever Android devices were connected with wi-fi they could connect OK and everything mostly worked but the signal strength bars stayed gray instead of turning blue like they usually do. When I googled that problem I found that on some forums they said the problem was not having a good connection to Google's servers so Google sync, notifications, etc. could work properly although I have no idea how to check it. Whatever the problem was C/L must have got it fixed cause the gray bars are back to blue again today.
I wonder if anyone else noticed that and what they did about it, if anything?

[Embarq] Can you beat this?
[att=1]
And by beat I mean have a slower connection. I pay for a 3mb line and this is what I get every single day for 8+ hours and sometimes 12+ hours. I really enjoy paying full price for a connection that runs at a fraction of its supposed speed. I should just start sending in a couple dollars as payment since they arent providing real service.. Maybe I can hide behind " up to " line also.
Thankfully I should be moving in the future to an area that offers cable.. It is a shentel controlled area so it is going to be really overpriced but much more stable according the those that have it.

Need help choosing new wireless modem.
We have moved permanently to our lake place where we have CenturyLink DSL. We upped or speed but are still using an old Westell 327W which is not handling it well and (I'm an amateur radio operator) RF gets into it at times knocking the internet off. What is the best replacement wireless router for CenturyLink? I also need excellent range as we share with our neighbors.

[Embarq] Bonded DSL Worth Getting?
I received a flier in the mail from Centurylink stating that faster speeds were available in my area, up to 20Mbps. I confirmed that the 20Mbps was offered via bonded pairs. Currently I have the 10Mbps and have been pretty happy with it recently.
Does anyone have any experience with Centurylink's bonded DSL offerings in old Embarq territory? Any words of wisdom? What modem is used? Thanks!

How to replace my Cisco 678 modem?
I am using Century Link DSL with a Cisco 678 modem and and Linksys WRT610N router. The modem is so old that I can't connect a computer to it (it has a serial connection only).
Nothing is fundamentally wrong with the setup except speeds are slightly slower than what we're paying for.
What kind of modem could I get to replace the Cisco, and since modems these days seem to be routers too, how would I set things up?
Thank you--

Is there anything with these line stats indicating unstable ping?
I've dealt with this for what I feel like is far too long now, since it legit magically appeared one day and has not gone away since (which was almost 1 years ago)
Basically my ping is usually unstable in games; it never "sits" in place and always have a variation. So it could be 120, then shoot up to 170...etc. Spiking. An actual example, I was playing UT and my ping was at 110ms. However, throughout the match it fluctuated to any degree of 110ms-150ms practically every second. It does not settle/stabilize. (this problem was not here at one point ,i used to have a very nice and stable ping that had a variation of maybe 5ms).
So for the past year i've argued with CL about it; they always tell me the same thing "its because your area is bandwidth exhausted. Your area is permanently exhausted and the issue will not be fixed."
However...I was told the exhaust went into effect as of November 2013. When did my problem appear? July 2014. The period of time between Nov 2013 through July 2014 everything was *fine.* This contradicts there own words of "it wont get any worse." (Which is what I was told; however it has gotten worse).
The case was: July 4th,2014, a thunderstorm rolled in and knocked the internet out for my area. July 5th, internet came back up in the evening. Ever since then, my pings have been sporadic and poor.
Regarding the FEC errors: This was a long case that eventually resulted in "we dont know." I had multiple line techs that came out to my area and legit told me they have no idea what FEC errors are. They ran a new phone jack from the NID to the home. Nothing changed.
(I have plugged directly into the NID, nothing changes to my knowledge and CL's knowledge.)
So yeah, youll notice the millions of FEC errors. They seem to pop up if I restart the modem, and they explode in the millions, but they eventually stop over a period of like a week.
So, im curious if any of you can see a problem with my line, and if so, where I could possibly go to get something fixed (if anything).
Also, as a note, this is *always* here. it does not vanish at 2am in the morning ("non peak hours.") it is always like this.

[Qwest] Recommendations for upgrading from an Actiontec C1000A?
I'm getting a bit worried about my current modem, but rather than just replace it with another C1000A, I wondered what folks had found success with, if they moved away from that model?
