CenturyLink Minneapolis - Stable & Fast Router Recommendation 12mb

I have seen and read about countless poor experiences with the leased CenturyLink routers. It seems like any decent recommendations I find are for models that are no longer in production. I have a stable WiFi access point that I can use with the router, so my only real and primary concern is finding a model that has a reputation for being stable over long periods of time and is fast. I don't want to pay for a bunch of extras that I dont need either (i.e. usb ports for remote storage, or 802.11ac) I was told the DSLAM that would service my address is a Adtran 1248. One rep told me I would be on VDSL, and another said it would be ADSL2.

Mapping the fiber rollout in the twin cities

We already have the speedtest map to see where CL is reporting the availability of fiber, but what about mapping the rollout which seems to be underway? I made a google map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z0hBrAM1zU5A.k3NxfUpRNnjE which should be editable by anyone, to try to do some realtime mapping of the twin cities CenturyLink fiber rollout. :) Here's the plan: On the map, draw a line down the alley where you have observed the fiber rollout - either you've seen the trucks, or observed the Owens Corning fiber breakout boxes strung between poles with your own two eyes. Drop a point on the Telco Box layer where you see a telco box labeled with the "Fiber Optic Cable" marker. Don't get in trouble for lurking in alleys. ;)

Google Chrome Showing Significantly Slower Speeds than Firefox

I am on the 1 gpbs service. Found out today that whatever Google Chrome is doing with the speed tests are not working correctly - Consistently getting 300 mbps down and 50 mbps up in Chrome. When using Firefox on the same test sites I get more like 700 mbps down and 900 mbps up. The DSLReports html 5 speed test works well and consistently (shows speeds in the 700 down 800 up range) on all browsers (including Chrome). Maybe an indication of a flash problem? Who knows, but just wanted to let everyone know to try your speed tests in Firefox too.

DSL Speed Bonded Pair 12000 Feet

I currentyl have a solid 6mbps at 12000 from the nearest century link building. I asked to upgrade speed as they swore they could give me 20mbps. Tech came out on unrelated issue Saturday. I told him I was told max of 6mbps years ago due to distance. He said he checked it and I could get 20 (but realistically 15 or so) with bonded pair. Today, got recorded phone call that says due to my distance, I could only have max of 6mbps. What do I believe? 6mbps or double with bonded? Thanks.

Using AT&T DSL modem with CenturyLink?

I had AT&T, then moved to Nebraska - where they don't offer service. I have CenturyLink now, and it works, but I don't want to buy another modem or pay $8/month to lease one. I poked around in the AT&T modem's (NVG589) configuration page, but I couldn't find anything helpful. I've heard some AT&T modems work with other ISPs.

How to request a site survey

Hey ya'll, I just moved to Stevensville, MT, which is still a developing area for broadband internet, cable internet isn't available in this town, the fastest thing is "Air Fiber", however with the cost associated with that is too expensive. Anyway, I'm on centurylink with a 7Mbps connection, across the street (this is a trailer park) they are able to get faster speeds. My question is what should I do to get Centurylink to come out and see if a faster speed can be achieved. I know distance to the relays make a difference. the boxes for the area across the street and my side are next to each other in my front yard. Thanks!

1 Gig Slow - but techs on it - Columbia, MO

Feels very awkward to complain when only getting 250 mbps down and 50 mbps up - but that is only 25% and 5% retrospectively of what is expected. Anyone in the Columbia, MO area on 1 gig service - know that CenturyLink has a known issue and advises it will be corrected by 3/31/15.

Slow slow slow

I am sick of the super slow speeds of my internet with century link. The only thing more frustrating then the speeds is the customer service we have received. Most of the time we are nearly brushed off as if we are wrong about our concerns or given the run around. When they finally decide to send a tech out, the tech just shows up and doesn't contact us, just leaves a note on the door saying "everything works fine". So sick of it! Switching to a different carrier ASAP!!

1 Gig in Phoenix Arizona (Ahwatukee) - $128 per month

The new apartment complex just off the 10 and Chandler was built with fiber. The base rent includes 40 Megabits down. I confirmed 1 Gigabit speeds are available for $128 per month. 12 month contract. Might have to pay $99 for a new modem. While it is bad-ass at first running speed tests, what is the justification to spend $1280 for 1 year of gigabit speeds? It's not like I am hosting any VM's or a CDN for income :| Liv Ahwatukee http://www.livahwatukee.com 16025 S. 50th Street Phoenix, AZ 85048

Bonding Help/making two connections into one

Ok so i have to have a min. of 5m up and 1m down because of job....well Centurylink in my area offers 10down but only 765K up...i get about .65 when i do the speed test. So i contacted the talktous team and this is what he says.... "Your max available speed is 10M down, 768k up. The technology itself that provides internet to your location is ADSL2+ and has a max download speed of about 1M up, but our speed tiers are set so that 768k is the highest and there’s no way to override that. The only real option I can suggest is for you to get a 2nd DSL line with 10M up, 768k and then purchasing a third-party modem that can bond the 2 lines together. " So my question is...is there anyone who known what i need to do? If i have a second line of service in my home and i get a special modem that can link those two into one connection to essentially double my speeds, what do i need to do? Step by step instructions please!!!! This has to be done by 4/13/15 if possible. I am not sure if i just hook the two phone lines into the modem i am to buy or if my two CL modems would hook into my bonded modem to make one...then what if anything would i need to change on my CL modems to make all this work? Any help would be appreciative as i don't want to loose my job over this!!!! Thanks, Billy

I'm sorry to post here. not sure where to put this anymore. We have had a constant issue with speed. We also have a constant problem with no service whatsoever. In the beginning of our service we would call the usual high speed number and sit on the phone for a couple of hours while the person on the other end went though ever single nook of our modem. The problem would always be on centurylinks end. They would send a tech out and have it fixed within a day or two. I posted here a couple of years ago and was connected with an escalations email address and could easily send out an email and avoid the two hours of "please open a browser and type 192.168.0.1" type of wasted time. We have now have had below 2Mbps for over a month. I have contacted the "old" email address (a Thursday) and received a reply (a few days later) to contact phone support or live chat (which would be impossible with no internet at all Tuesday and most of Wednesday) on Tuesday. As irritated as I have been, I sent an email explaining how unacceptable phone support really is. This was returned to me four days later saying I had the wrong department and to contact phone support or live chat. So. Who do I contact to resolve the issue? I don't like to complain. I feel guilty for being so upset about this, but I do pay for it so...? I have been in constant contact with the escalations desk for these issues and they have always, and I mean always, come through really quickly with a resolution. Again, don't like to complain, but it's getting a bit much.

Rural DSL, possible line break?

What is the best way to get a technician with a TDR out to check out my line? Myself as well my neighbors have called and had a "technician" out to check everything out, and in my experience, all he has ever done is change out my filter....that's it. My monitor shows clearly that when the ground is wet, we start losing connection, and its marginal the rest of the time. I understand being at the end of the run, farthest from the DSLAM, its not going to be the fastest, but its getting to the point where I can not download a 500mb file, because the connection will drop before its done.

Getting gigabit fiber next week

As I'm one of the lucky bastards who lives in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood -- where CenturyLink is rolling out gigabit fiber -- I eagerly signed up last night. Can't wait to ditch Comcast after like 16 years, hehehe. DSL is brand new for me, so I've been devouring as much information as I can find. I understand that the connection uses PPPoE (why not just plain Ethernet? sigh) and that outbound traffic from my house must be tagged with VLAN 201. Unfortunately, my Cisco RV220w router can't apply tags to the WAN port. So when I placed my order I said I'll spend $99 for the modem; I hope they bring a Technicolor C2000T, it seems more "featureful" than the Actiontec C2000A-D. Does anyone know if it's possible to have Clink remove the VLAN 201 requirement? If so, then I suspect I wouldn't need to use any of their gear at all and I could continue using my RV220w. I really like that little router, it's rock solid and has been running for a few hundred days now without any hiccups at all.

[Embarq] Outage in NC?

General Support question

$

There has been an ongoing issue in my area of Va. for going on a week. Usually in the afternoon or evening, but occasionally around noon, net access becomes impossible. Pinging my Default Gateway reveals packet loss routinely in excess of 50% (I'm pinging the gateway). Pings outside the gateway are the same. Usually there's some warning if I'm online before the connection degrades and I hit a site like DownDetector.com and sure enough, there's a color blob over my area. Or, if I'm unable to get there, when I check after I'm back up I see that there was an issue in my area. I don't usually call support because frankly it's useless. The support focus will inevitably become my 660R Embarq supplied modem as the likely issue. No one is ever able to tell me whether there's an issue in my area and so the problem is assumed to be mine. I've even gone to the NID with the modem, had no access, and been told the issue is on my end. Yesterday, I broke down and called because this down-time occurred first while I was trying to do my taxes, and then later as I was about to stream netflix. Same experience with the 660 as the likely problem, and how they couldn't "see my modem" My question: If I'm unable to ping my gateway without packet loss in excess of 50%, how likely are they to see it? And how it is they have absolutely no way to aggregate trouble calls into meaningful information in which to formulate whether there's an issue possibly in an area? First, the tech rep told me he could not see my modem. Then, when I asked him to ping my default gateway he said he could not do that without a supervisor. So I asked him to get a supervisor because I wanted to know the result of pinging it for my own satisfaction. The rep comes back to say they now "see" two IP addresses associated with my account. That's likely because after I was told to remove the switch from the chain and plug the computer directly into the modem (which did nothing) I released my IP and booted my backup 660 and obtained a new IP in the usual amount of time. If they can see the IP addresses associated with my account, and I'm seeing massive packet loss to my gateway, how is it that support works with a system that they claim is unable to ping my gateway? If they are able to see my IP and I'm telling them my gateway is borked whenever this has occurred over the past week, why is it still assumed to be the modem(s) first? They didn't want the IP of my gateway - as if they knew what it was. So why is no one able to tell me whether that router is functioning properly? I don't think I'm in an oversold area unless they oversold it in a very short amount of time because I've been rock solid and streaming HD without interruption for years. But then how do they have an issue that lasts for a week that involves sporadic high packet loss? -- --

Centurylink DSL price increases AGAIN! Woohoo!

Another buck. Yeah not going to make a difference to my pocketbook, but this irritates me because of their history. For 7Mbps: June it was 46.99, then July up to 47.99, then March 49.99, now 50.99. The most recent price increase is due to a 1.99 "Internet Cost Recovery Fee", the rest is simply 49.00 for DSL. Three price increases in one year. And I don't live in a sparsely populated area. I might consider going back to Comcast (gulp) to get the year promotion but mostly to vote with my pocketbook.

Moving to Lower Alabama

Hello people first post but I've been reading the forums for yrs. I am relocating for a job into a rural location in Baldwin County Alabama. Sadly my choices for internet seem to be Excede Satellite or adsl Century Link. I'm scared of the horror stories with Excede and the the price is just not worth the risk with a 2 yr contract. I'm also less then thrilled leaving my 75/75 FIOS here in Tampa for the pitiful future of Century link dsl. I see my options are 10 mbps if I sign a 1 yr contract for $35.00 + fees a month and buy a supposed new router for $99 bucks with self install. Then they offer 15 and 20 mbps options both at $74.00 a month with required tech to install at $60.00. What is the reason to offer a 15 and 20 mbps plan at the same price? Who would be foolish enough not to take the so called higher plan? Am I missing some thing? Any advice on Century link and what I should expect would be most helpful. Thanks.
