sporadic high latency
I've been fighting slow connections off and on for a while now. It seems like even when my download and upload speeds are normal according to a speed test, I still get very flaky connections and find it difficult to use Skype or Netflix.
I tried pinging a few public sites like www.google.com and when things are going well the response time is around 60ms which is very good. However when things are bad the ping time is 600ms - 1000ms, obviously very poor.
I've tried the usual like rebooting the modem etc, and when I've called CL they have reset a port on their side and that seems to help for a short time.
Any thoughts on how to clear up this sporadic high latency?

With Fiber coming my options are slowing
I am in the area of current fiber rollout in St Paul and have been randomly checking to see if magically, fiber becomes available. =)
Well today I checked available services and instead of 12 and 7 as options now it is only relegated to 7.. I wonder if this is in preparation for fiber rollout?

Connection fails miserably when it rains
Back when I first signed up with Embarq (now CenturyLink), my connection worked great except for when it would start to rain locally. At that point, the connection would totally fail, and while the modem would repeatedly try to sync itself, there was no more using the web until the rain stopped. Tech after tech came by for a look and tried to fix it, but none ever could.
After several years of this behavior, it was raining hard one day and I realized I still had a good connection. I have no idea what they fixed or replaced, or where in the line they did whatever they did, but the problem had mysteriously vanished. My guess is that they didn't even know they had fixed an outstanding issue.
A few months back, I opted for a faster connection that required some wiring changes on the telephone pole along with a different modem. The connection is achieving the speeds advertised, but guess what? Now, every time it is even about to rain, the connection slows to an absolute crawl, or starts repeatedly trying to sync itself, and I have to wait until the rain has come and gone before it is usable again.
There are plenty of threads on these forums where others have had, or are still having the same issue, so I won't bother with trying to get the problem corrected because I don't think CenturyLink has any techs talented enough to figure it out, but it seemed important to note the issue here for future reference. In the interim, I'll just find something else to do on those rainy days.

[CenturyTel] PK5001Z modem retrain ?
I recently upgraded to PK5001Z and have a problem.
I am at least 2 mi down Cu wire from DSLAM. Once a day my line becomes 'unstable'. When this happens my pk5001z drops speed down to 1mb from normal 8mb. (connect = 9.3434Mb to 1.x Mb).
My question is there a way to get the modem to retrain BACK UP ??? I have to reboot at least once a day. Service trouble shooter shows the line as 'unstable'. If I report it all is working ok when tech comes out.
My question is whether there is an option to force the modem to retrain back up -OR- a better modem I can buy that accomplishes same ??
Thanks, Howard (Blounts Creek, NC)

CenturyLink Minneapolis - Stable & Fast Router Recommendation 12mb
I have seen and read about countless poor experiences with the leased CenturyLink routers. It seems like any decent recommendations I find are for models that are no longer in production.
I have a stable WiFi access point that I can use with the router, so my only real and primary concern is finding a model that has a reputation for being stable over long periods of time and is fast. I don't want to pay for a bunch of extras that I dont need either (i.e. usb ports for remote storage, or 802.11ac)
I was told the DSLAM that would service my address is a Adtran 1248. One rep told me I would be on VDSL, and another said it would be ADSL2.

VPN on Centurylink C2000A?
I am new to Centurylink and need to find out how to set up VPN through a C2000A modem. I have a Server in my small home Network that I Need to Access from the outside. I used to be on Comcast, and that worked fine. Now on Centurylink, I can ping the Server, but I cannot set up a VPN tunnel to it. I tried to Forward ports, but I am not making headway. The Server is running Win2008 Server. Does anybody know how to enable that?
And why is this site capializing half of the words ...

I forgot my admin password so I had to do a complete reset on a c1000z. My question is I wrote down the WiFi password on the bottom of the modem and connected it to my cellphone. So is normal for the light to from Orange to green like that? I don't have to get on internet and go through the automatic century link process?

PK5001Z speed and disconnect problems
Hi, i am posting for another's service in my house.
The first problem is that im getting VERY frequent disconnects(i get kicked out of video games whenever it happens). From what i see, these disconnects are being caused by "WAN PHYSICAL LINK DOWN" in my modem's system log. It happens atleast 10 times per day.
Another recent problem is that today my speed has dropped down from my advertised 1.5 mbps to .6 mbps. Also there are massive ping spikes if anyone does anything over the service, it lags everyone else very easily.
I am running on wifi, i have 86 to 100% connectivity. Wired is not possible (sadly).
Here are the DSL status. I did have system logs but they deleted on modem reboot. I will post when it happens shortly
Edit: I called tech support and they said the WAN physical link downs was the cause of the modem failing to upgrade firmware? and disconnecting everyone. And they sent a 'signal' they resolved speed issue for now

Rant - Credit check to change service
I called Centurylink a month or so ago. I was trying to change my service to something less expensive. I went through the motions of talking to the rep, finding out what was available, etc.
He told me they had a 12/12 for 54.00 a month (even though they don't offer 12/12). I was like, sure, go for it.
Then all the sudden he says, oh, you'll have to go through a credit check. I said, WHAT?!?!
I've been a customer of Qwest/Centurylink for over 18 years. Minus a couple of snaffu's I've always paid my bill on time and in full.
They said that they didn't have a SS# on file - Hmm .. I remember giving that up to them YEARS ago.
I tried to resolve the problem using they executive escalation department, but, sadly, they quit replying. I've had an outstanding communication with a rep form their department for several weeks...
I'll tell ya, what a kick in the face it is to hear that after that amount of time they want to run a credit check on you. I simply refused. I don't want a negative hit on my credit for a service I've had for almost two decades. I guess paying your bills on time REALLY doesn't matter to companies anymore...

[Qwest] how to get increased or over provisioned on a 20/2 bonded pair?
Hey! I am a new contributor, but a long time reader of the forum.
CenturyLink just placed fiber into our subdivision and has it connected to a VDSL2 DSLAM. Much improved over our ADSL DSLAM fed off of 8-T1 lines.
Fast forward.. My wire length per CL's database qualified me for 12/0.896 single line, or 20/2 pair bonded (through the business site only).
I appear to sync just fine 10662/1020 per pair. I have about 32dB of attenuation and a SNR of 19dB using a C2000T modem. The modem reports ~ 7800' between my CPE and the DSLAM.
The curious thing here, is my line, upon install, at first, synced > 20mbps, single pair. Once the tech called in to convert my order to pair bonded, it throttled down to the numbers listed above.
Digging into this further, I used telnet to access my modem, and via the XDSLCTL0/XDSLCTL1 commands, I found my modem could theoretically sync at the following rates:
> xdslctl0 info
xdslctl0: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Last Retrain Reason: 0
Last initialization procedure status: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 1175 Kbps, Downstream rate = 23546 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 1022 Kbps, Downstream rate = 10062 Kbps
> xdslctl1 info
xdslctl1: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Last Retrain Reason: 0
Last initialization procedure status: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 1182 Kbps, Downstream rate = 24204 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 1020 Kbps, Downstream rate = 10062 Kbps
So, here's the question, how could I go about converting to a 40/2 connection (20000/1000 per pair)? On the CL price guide I'd seen in another post, a 40/2 looks like an available option.
Should I go through tech support to see if they would overprovision me? Sounds like the automatic overprovisioning may not happen on pair bonded setups via the small business pricing tier.
I'd be happy to pay more for a 40/2 connection.
But the thing that's curious, is when I review the attenuation in the various line calculators, it claims my attenuation has about 14000mbps max. Perhaps my SNR being in the high teens is helping the cause of the attenuation being a bit high?
Thoughts? Is this worth the trouble of pinging CL?

Does anyone have any ideas on this issue?
I have 2 bonded dsl lines (20/2). I have a Actiontec 2000A Modem/Router combo which I bought from Centurylink. The Actiontec is in bridged mode and the wifi is shut off. I have a Apple Airport Extreme connected to the Actiontec which is serving as my router. I also have a Apple Airport Extreme in another part of the house acting as wireless relay or extension to the Main AAE.
This arrangement has been working fine until about 6 weeks ago. At that time I would randomly find that I was disconnected from the internet. It would generally occur every 2 or 3 days. This happened at all times of the day and night with no particular pattern.
As soon as I unplugged my Actiontec Modem and AAE Router and plugged it back in I would reconnect to the internet and everything would roll along for 2 or 3 days until the same thing repeated.
Centurylink says that I am randomly failing to authenticate with their system which causes me to be disconnected. They tell me that this is the fault of my Apple Airport Extreme Router and not their equipment. They say since I have the Actiontec 2000A in Bridged mode it is up to my router to provide the information to authenticate my account.
I could accept that I guess except I have now tried 3 different Apple Airport Express Routers and the same thing continues to happen. I find it hard to believe that all 3 of the Apple Routers could be failing.
Does anyone have any idea as to what could be going on. Since Centurylink maintains it is a router failure they have nothing further to offer.
They have come out and checked the 2 DSL lines and the stats on them seem fine. I know I could just return to using their Actiontec as as Modem and Router but this will not provide adequate coverage for my house. and I don't know what to do to accomplish the desired coverage if I did that as the 2nd Airport Extreme Router does not seem to want to relay the Actiontec.

[CenturyTel] PK5000 Modem
My internet provider is Century Link with a speed of 1.5 mbps using a PK5000 modem. I am informed that 7 mpbs is now available in our area in Wyoming and that I need to upgrade to a different modem that supports VDSL2. The representative said the PK5000 modem will not work and suggested the Zykel Q1000. He said to lease and I told him no I will buy. Will the PK 5000 modem work with VDSL2 at 7 mpbs or will I encounter problems with connectivity and speed as the rep suggested? Do I need to get a different modem? If a different modem, what is recommended? Would like coverage so I can be outside in the yard with no difficulty.

ADSL2+ vs. VDSL2 8a stats
Just got 20/2 (pair-bonded VDSL2 8a) set up and have it side-by-side with 20/.896 single-pair ADSL2+ (which requires modifying the target SNR to train at the full 20M downstream).
All stats (both VDSL2 and ADSL2+) were taken at the NID. (There's an individual test jack for each pair.) Only one pair was in use at a time, so the setup wasn't completely realistic (potential crosstalk issues with more active pairs). However, after eliminating the rest of the daisy chain of my inside wire (the only active jack now is what is probably the first jack in the chain), the stats on each pair _with all 3 pairs active simultaneously_ are virtually identical.
VDSL2 pair 1

I'm skeptical about the attainable upstream rate though; 3.8M seems very optimistic. As far as getting 40/2 or 40/5 (20/1 or 20/2.5) provisioned, that'll probably be difficult.

How to replace my Cisco 678 modem?
I am using Century Link DSL with a Cisco 678 modem and and Linksys WRT610N router. The modem is so old that I can't connect a computer to it (it has a serial connection only).
Nothing is fundamentally wrong with the setup except speeds are slightly slower than what we're paying for.
What kind of modem could I get to replace the Cisco, and since modems these days seem to be routers too, how would I set things up?
Thank you--

CoreConnect now starts at $75.
Not sure what areas this applies to, but it looks like CL has dropped the price on CoreConnect for speeds up to 20M (in my experience, the price stays the same even if you choose additional upload capacity and even if they need to use bonding to get you 20m/896k, 20m/2m or 20m/5m) from $85 to $75.
More information: http://www.centurylink.com/small-business/bundles/core-connect/
In another ad I saw recently, they show a picture of the Polycom VVX300, which is CL's standard equipment for their hosted VOIP service -- I don't know if there's a variant of CoreConnect that includes that, as I'm just using a PSTN line to connect to some other equipment locally.
Kind of unrelatedly, has anybody used their hosted VOIP service?
