Says I can get 20mbps... Now what does this mean? It has to be VDSL2+ right? And if so would I also be able to get 40mbps bonded? I called them but it is not in their system yet and they told me to check back in a week. Does it normally take a week after receiving the email?

So i've been wondering what would happen if i spent the $20 for a Prism box off of eBay (i know it's probably CenturyLink's property) My main thing is they sell Prism a mile or so from my house but swear up and down i cannot use it, so i just want to plug a box in and see what happens since i'll bet it'll work just fine being IP based. Has anyone done this?

I see that there is new firmware available for the C1000A. I am using a C1000Z now but have a C1000A on standby. Does the new firmware list attenuation and loop length available? Old firmware listed attenuation and loop length as N/A. Just wondering. -- VDSL2 25/2 service

Hello all, Wondering if any Denver-area users could comment on their experiences so far with the new gigabit package? Download/ upload speeds? How has service uptime been? Do they actually run new fiber to your house or does the service utilize existing copper? Thanks!

CenturyLink degrading my bandwidth to force me to change my modem

$

For the past three years I've been using an Actiontec GT701D modem, not the best but has been glitch free for a 7Mb connection with CenturyLink. I recently noticed a drop in the results of my speed tests by exactly 1 Mb. I thought it was no big deal until exactly two weeks later when I checked and speed test indicated my download speed was exactly another 1 Mb slower. I went from having 6.1 (for years) to 5.1 then to 4.1, and I thought something is going on here. I called tech support three times on this: First Call: Agent said it was congestion and that the problem was on their end. Powered down the modem and they reset it. Back to acceptable speed test results (6.1 Mb). Tech asked me what kind of modem do I have and said nothing else. Bandwidth then degraded to 4.3 again in two days after a short disconnect. Second Call: Agent said the reason for the degraded bandwidth is my modem, which is not supported by CenturyLink. I said, What? He repeated that the modem is "outdated" and the problem occurs when the server needs to reconnect. He said quickly that they can send me a new modem for free -- a ZyXEL PK5001Z. I hung up the phone to call back and speak with another tech agent. Third Call: Agent said 1) the GT701D modem I've been using for years IS supported by CenturyLink for speeds up to 7Mb (that's what I have), and 2) disconnection with the server would not result in "degraded" bandwidth from 6.1 to 4.3. If the modem was not compatible it would not cause a degraded bandwidth; it would not sync with the CenturyLink server, which means no connection. He said he disagreed that I need another modem as long as I'm not going beyond a 7 Mb connection speed. This agent fixed the bandwidth again, as in the first call, but he added that if the problem continues the modem should be upgraded, and he also offered the free replacement of a ZyXEL PK5001Z. ---It's a known fact that the modem being offered to me for free (PK5001Z by ZyXEL) has not just one but TWO open ports in the firewall: 4567 and 51080. Users cannot close these ports, and they are obvious security vulnerabilities. See here: For some background info on this: http://thenubbyadmin.com/2014/04/28/a-tale-of-centurylink-backdoors-pci-compliance-and-pain-lots-of-pain/ I know for a fact that my current modem, the GT701D has no open ports and passes tests at Gibson Research all at stealth results. CenturyLink is trying to get customers to use a modem that they can bypass, and though I can't prove what they're doing it looks real unethical to me at the moment. I guess it's the right time of year for them to screw with me. I will not accept this modem for free, under any circumstance. Apparently, the PK5000 is the ZyXEL model to go with for security without vulnerabilities, and only if they have this available to replace for free will I accept a new modem from them. I'd rather call every time my bandwidth gets degraded beyond 20% of my connection speed.

Anybody having issues with Google servers?

Two days ago at about 4 P.M. my connection to pretty much all of Google's servers took a huge nose dive. The most noticeable is Gmail and YouTube. The sites work but my connection to them is going up and down like crazy. I have my network monitor up and when trying to load either site my connection goes from full utilization down to just a couple hundred kilobits back up to full and sometimes even down to zero like it completely disconnects for a second and then comes back and repeats. At first I thought it was just congestion but i'm having this issue no matter what time of day or night it is. I did a traceroute to Google, Gmail, and YouTube, several times and they all turned up normal results. I'm only having issues with Google services, no other sites are having issues. Anybody else having any issues? My location is South Central Missouri, if that helps.

Bypass C2000T?

Hello all! Lost my username so I had to create a new account. I recently had our line upgraded to 25M. They installed a new modem, the C2000T with a wireless router built in. I've never had a modem like this. Do you have to use the wireless router aspect of this modem? I have an Asus RT-N66U that we've been using for over a year that works great. I'd like to keep using that router if it is possible. Is the C2000T a good wireless router? Any reasons not to use my tried and true Asus router over it? Thanks for any replies and help!

UPnP and Port Forwarding with C2000T Modem

Hello, I use the Technicolor C2000T modem as my router and it appears that UPnP and UPnP NAT-T do not work. I have it enabled, however it does not seem to work for my Xbox 360, Xbox One, or other UPnP devices that should be configuring rules automatically on the router. To get around this up until now, I have just manually configured port forwarding for my primary Xbox. This has worked since I am forwarding the same public ports to the same internal ports (i.e. port 3074 on the router to 3074 on the Xbox). I have added some additional devices (i.e. a Tablo) to my network that require different public ports to be forwarded to different internal ports (i.e. port 21150 on the router to 8887 on the internal device). Most routers support this capability, however it appears the CenturyLink modems do not support this. So, for my particular issue, I think one of two things will solve it: 1) Figure out how to get UPnP/UPnP-NAT-T working -OR- 2) Figure out how to map a public port to a different internal port I also have a current generation AirPort Extreme, however, when I use it as my router, I get slower Internet speeds (I have the 1 Gpbs service, and lose over 100 Mbps in speed if I use the AirPort as the router). Thanks!

Getting gigabit fiber next week

$

As I'm one of the lucky bastards who lives in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood -- where CenturyLink is rolling out gigabit fiber -- I eagerly signed up last night. Can't wait to ditch Comcast after like 16 years, hehehe. DSL is brand new for me, so I've been devouring as much information as I can find. I understand that the connection uses PPPoE (why not just plain Ethernet? sigh) and that outbound traffic from my house must be tagged with VLAN 201. Unfortunately, my Cisco RV220w router can't apply tags to the WAN port. So when I placed my order I said I'll spend $99 for the modem; I hope they bring a Technicolor C2000T, it seems more "featureful" than the Actiontec C2000A-D. Does anyone know if it's possible to have Clink remove the VLAN 201 requirement? If so, then I suspect I wouldn't need to use any of their gear at all and I could continue using my RV220w. I really like that little router, it's rock solid and has been running for a few hundred days now without any hiccups at all.

C1000A New Firmware broke my Server connection? HELP PLS

Hello again, Yesterday, while streaming a TV show over the lan from my now 5 year old Media Server using a Intel CT Gigabit PCIe card a popup window came up and said "Error something is wrong with the network, please check you connection and try again" or something along those lines. So, it was the first time I have ever seen that message. So I rebooted the server and the Samsung bluray player, which is what I was using for playback and about 10 minutes later the same message popped up. Confused I decided to stop watching my show and investigate. During the investigation I could NOT find anything wrong with both the Modem or the WHS2011 server. Remote desktop was still working great and all drives looked to be in perfect shape. I did several network tests and a test on my Intel NIC card and found nothing wrong. So, during this investigation I discovered that the Modem had new firmware FINALLY and decided to upgrade to it. I backed up my current config and went to install the new firmware but it kept failing, several times in a row. Tried using as suggested by CenturyLink Safari and it also failed. Tried Chrome and Opera and still nothing at all, then on a whim I decided to try Firefox and it worked perfectly and the firmware installed without a hitch. LOL Anyway, after that I rebooted and went to go watch the rest of the show and it worked just fine. The Plex server still running great and the plex player finished the rest of the show I was watching about 30 minutes left. I then went to bed. WELL, this morning I go to access my server and my computer tells me it does not exist. HUH? So, I did a network search for it and there it is the very first computer to pop up on the windows explorer network section. I double click on it, its called "SERVER" and I get a popup that tells me "Windows cannot access \\SERVER" and if I click on anything else in that window I get a popup that it does not exist and will not let me do anything. So, I go into the modem using IE11 (Im on Windows 8.1) and look around and there it is clearly listed and the IP is exactly the same as it has always been. The mac is the same and the IP, NOTHING has changed. So I power down, wait 5 minutes and then power back up and I still cannot access the \\SERVER. So, I tried using the ComputerConnector software to search for my WHS2011 server and it says it does not exist and the IP section is grayed out. So, I tried connecting to the server using the browser and h t t p : // servername/connect which has ALWAYS worked and the browser says "The Website can't be displayed" So, I click on the Diagnose button and get the following message: website (192.168.X.X) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. The remote computer isn’t responding to connections on port 80, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn’t find any problems with the firewall on your computer. Contact the service provider or owner of the remote system for further assistance, or try again later No matter what I do I cannot access my server any more. Not sure if my NIC card has taken a dump or if the new firmware has broken it somehow. But the funny part is my Plex media server is still running flawlessly, I just can no longer access the server using explorer or rdp. Any ideas what I should try next? Have there been any reports of this new firmware breaking previously working setups? For now I think I may try the second built in NIC which is crap compared to the Intel NIC card. But its all I can think of to do next... Thanks for any solutions or ideas as to what has happened. EDIT: Oh, and I just discovered in windows explorer "Media Devices" section that if I click on "SERVER: Home Server" it then shows me all my media, pictures videos etc. So, the DLNA part of it is still working just fine. But the computer SERVER icon is completely dead. No more RDP and no more direct access. Weird

[Qwest] Business DSL line + Office365, how to get?

I have a business VDSL line 20/2 that came with MS Exchange. In October CL changed their business package to include MS Office 365. http://news.centurylink.com/news/microsoftR-office-365-is-now-included-in-centurylink-s-business-bundles MS Exchange is supplied via Savis (CL's hosting company), so I contacted Savis asking to replace Exchange with Office365. They told me that I can't have both on the account at the same time, so I asked them to delete the MS exchange and activate Office365. They just closed the support ticket without doing a single thing. Huh? The Savis support site is the slowest most unresponsive site I have seen in many years, even worse than CL's own customer support site if you can believe it. Has anyone else been successful in getting Office365 activated?

[CenturyTel] Slow in Southern Oregon

I've had CenturyLink DSL for a year and it really wonky lately. Speed has always been unstable running between 2 and 15 Mbs, averaging about 7. I put up with it because trying to work with CL tech support is frustrating beyond belief. But in the past couple months, my connection has started a problem where it just stops. If I open a browser window and type in a site, the browser wheel spins but nothing happens. It can take anywhere from five seconds to longer than two minutes (and then I quit). It happens intermittently but at least once a month. Effectively fixing it means unplugging all devices for a half hour. I called tech support but the language barrier made it very difficult and whether the slow speed resolved itself or the tech had something to do with it, I''m not sure. Is it normal for DSL speed to fluctuate so much? Are there giant pauses in my service because I live in Southern Oregon and all our traffic is routed up to Eugene? What causes this and can it be fixed? Centurylink DSL Pay for 12Mbps; Netgear ADSL modem DM111PSPv2, WRT54Gv with DD-WRT v24 sp2 with Ethernet direct to Macbook pro OSX 10.6.8

New Third Party VDSL2 Modem: TP-Link 9980

I was browsing TP-Link's site today to check out one of their modems and noticed that they've got new ADSL and VDSL modems. It's not uncommon to see third party ADSL modems with upgraded local area networking technologies, the Netgear D6200 has been on the market for well over a year, for example. The TP-Link 9980 is interesting because it's got reasonably good dual band N600 wireless networking and also because it's got a VDSL2 modem built in. There's also the "Archer D9" which has a top speed 802.11AC wireless access point and an ADSL2+ modem. It would be really interesting to hear if anybody's using either of those devices, though the 9980 is obviously of more interest, because it would be neat to see whether any more/better third party options for VDSL2 are becoming available.

Centurylink router brand question

My internet went out. I was given a Actiontec PK5001A modem/router. At first it seems good. I contacted Centurylink again. It would be fast then slow. I bridged it and tried MY router. Same thing. So I left it alone so they could do their "line test" I have been looking online. The Actiontec is hard to find any info about. Zyxel has a router PK5001A. It seems to be more popular. My question is....Is it better? Keep in mind, my internet is still not where it was BEFORE the switch. I still think it is part router issue. My ping time is 100ms and up. Use to be 30-50ms at the most.

Denver to Chicago Routing Problem

$

Since June I have been noticing strange latency changes every couple weeks to the Chicago/Seattle game servers I play on and this has been extremely frustrating for competitive gaming. It seems that about half the time I will ping ~50 to Chicago based servers, while the other half of the time I ping 85+ with some nice consistent packet loss as well that really makes it impossible to enjoy any kind of gaming. Through monitoring tracerts when I have good and bad ping I think I have pinpointed the issue. Every time that I have good ping my routing goes through Denver at dvr-brdr-02.inet.qwest.net and every time I have bad ping it goes through Kansas at los-bdr-01.inet.qwest.net with some nice packet loss trying to get there. I live only a few minutes away from Denver, while Wichita, Kansas is quite a jump away. Keep in mind that this doesn't appear to be a simple congestion issue where the time of day matters, it's either good all of the time or bad all of the time and changes every couple weeks. This also only happens when routing in the direction of Chicago as Dallas servers have always had a consistently good ping for me. I also know that the Denver server isn't simply down when this is happening, so it appears that Centurylink is making the choice to route me through Kansas, which appears to be causing the latency problems. Basically I just want to know what is causing this from a person that understands routing far better than I do and if there is anything that can be done about it. I'll provide some tracerts below to show what I am talking about. Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this as it may seem petty to some, but for me it's ruining one of my favorite hobbies.
