[CenturyTel] Slow connection to outgoing mail server

$

I've been trying to send outgoing mail to port 587 at mail.hover.com for the past several weeks. The connection takes about 30 seconds before the mail is sent. I've been in touch with hover (Tucows) and they've tried all kinds of things to resolve this...but nothing works. Same results on two different computers in different locations, but both connected to Centurylink DSL in Brownsboro, TX. I also tried connecting from an iPhone using a WiFi connection via both of these Centurylink DSL lines...same problem. But using the iPhone if I connect via AT&T cell tower it works fine. Also tried to TELNET into the server and it takes 30 seconds to get a response. I'm concluding that this must be something with the ISP (Centurylink). Anyone else have this problem? Perhaps Joey can help.

Want to Buy my Own Gear for CL service

Long time lurker, first time poster... I have been Comcast user for 9 years up until May 2014, when I made the switch to CenturyLink. It was cheaper and I was getting better speeds, close to 40mps. I wanted to buy gear and was given the C1000A. I configured it to work in bridge mode and use my router to provide networking. The C1000A works fine for 3 months and then bricks. I'm on my 3rd C1000A. My Question: I don't want a modem/router combo device. I just want a modem that will send the signal to my current router. With $200 as a price ceiling, what consumer grade gear should I buy? (I couldn't find a resource that clearly explained this) Any help is much appreciated! -Keith

Minneapolis Centurylink Speed map (Including Fiber rollout)

I got sick of wondering where this supposed fiber actually is in minneapolis. So i made this map: http://www.easymapmaker.com/map/6347814ae5d946a2fcc4cd60647ca456 Currently fiber is confined to about 4 square blocks in North East Minneapolis. Now we know why they wont tell us where it is.. (roll eyes) Enjoy.

I just have a few basic questions to make my life a little easier. Modem: PK5001Z from CenturyLink I am aware that when my Internet light is flashing green to red that my modem is searching for a WAN configuration. "If the light is alternately blinking between red and green, the modem is looking for the WAN configuration." - CenturyLink troubleshooting page Does this mean there is an issue on the ISP's end or mine? Is there a way to test if this is an issue on my end? If this was on my end, what solutions outside of restarting my modem would there be?

C1000A New Firmware

I see that there is new firmware available for the C1000A. I am using a C1000Z now but have a C1000A on standby. Does the new firmware list attenuation and loop length available? Old firmware listed attenuation and loop length as N/A. Just wondering. -- VDSL2 25/2 service

no more new/returning customers orders

Here in Ponder Texas CenturyLink has stopped offering DSL for new and returning customers. I have heard that they have under built there system and have stopped taking new/returning customers orders. I was going to switch to fixed wireless but CenturyLink customer support said that If I discontinue service then I cannot reinstate service. CenturyLink has the fiber laid from previous provider (Sprint Local) but never finished. I was told that the cost to implement service was to much based on number of current subscribers.

Replacing CenturyLink router function with external router

I want to disable the WiFi and router function of my CenturyLink modem/router with an external router. I am currently using a C1000A modem, but I want to test this on my old GT701-WG modem. Has anyone done this with a GT701-WG configured to use PPP0A or PPPoE? If I enable transparent bridging it looks like router has to do handle the PPP userid and password negotiation. When ordering the router (an ASUS RT-N56U) I assumed that the modem would still do that. What do I have to do to get this to work? (Maybe I'll find out when the router arrives, but I'd rather know ahead of time.) Edit: Further reading suggests that I need to put my modem in "bridge mode" and have the router do the PPPoA (or PPPoE) authentication. But I don't know how to put my GT701-WG in bridge mode. It has a "RFC1483 Bridged" option, but I get the impression that this is not transparent bridging. (My C1000A does have a "transparent bridging" mode. In fact it has multiple flavors. That may result in future questions.) How do I put a GT701-WG in transparent bridge mode? I can't find that documented.

Accessing DSL modem admin function when in bridged mode

I've seen dozens of (conflicting) posts on the web - some on DSLReports - attempting to address problem of accessing an ADSL modem's admin function when the modem is in "bridged mode" with the PPPoE or PPPoA function is being performed by a separate router. All are either convoluted solutions that work in a very limited set of circumstances, or for a single model of router or modem, or end with "It can't be done". Did I miss a definitive answer? If it can't be done, is there to have an external router downstream from a modem/router combination? I need better wireless access point than is available in a modem/router combo, but I would like access to the DSL stats. I am at the long, dirty phone (over 12,000 feet from the DSLAM) with terrible SNR. I would like access to the SNR and error correction stats even if I can't do anything about them.

Century Link Awful Upload Speed

Is there a tier of access that allows a faster upload speed? I will not argue that Century Link has done well for me for downloads. But as I begin to upload videos to youtube and skype, the upload speed has become a real issue! And at $72 a month for 20mbps access, I feel I should have at LEAST 2mbps or better upload. I hope there is an answer. I really do not want to have to go chase another ISP again. Thank you.

[Embarq] High Evening Latency

The past two nights, I've experienced high evening latency as evidenced by the following smokeping: http://www.dslreports.com/smokeping?target=0712ab6ecdf79bcf70eb25b01ca3f25d.Michigan The latency hits 3 hops into CenturyLink's network, at a router named atx-edge-05.inet.quest.net (67.14.14.214). I remoted into a family member's computer who uses Centurylink one county over and they are experiencing the same issue at the same location. The odd thing is how quickly the connection goes from flawless to crappy - it's almost instantaneous like someone is flipping a switch. It will slowly come back down as you approach midnight. I dread calling support - since it appears this a case of "deal with it since we're the only game in town."

Gigabit internet in Bellevue WA

According to Dec 12th's Bellevue Reporter, Centurylink is going to trial gigabit internet in West Lake Hills in Bellevue WA in 2015. According to the article http://issuu.com/pnwmarketplace/docs/i20141211122436830 (flip over to page 17) residents within the pilot area have been contacted by direct mail about options to participate. I live in area and I've seen nothing. Don't know how many Bellevue residents read this board, but was anyone contacted?

Can't quite get gigabit speeds on CenturyLink

Hello, I've been using the gigabit fiber service from CenturyLink for a few weeks now. I've been very happy with the service. However, the best speeds I am able to obtain are around 830 Mbps. I've tried various speed tests and tried downloading multiple streams. It always seems to cap out around 800 to 830. Any ideas of anything I could try to boost that over 900 or higher? Thanks!

[Embarq] Modem: Actiontec C2000A vs Cisco DDR2200

$

Hey, guys... CenturyLink advised me earlier today that I can now get a bonded 20Mb/s ADSL2 connection for less than I've been paying for 10Mb/s. I told them I'm interested, but when it came to modem selection, they gave me a choice between the Actiontec C2000A and the Cisco DDR2200. Not knowing anything about either of them, I chose the Cisco device only because I was familiar with that brand, whereas I know nothing about Actiontec. Should I have gone for the other brand? If so, I'll call them back and switch to the Actiontec device before they come out to upgrade my connection. I've heard good things about the Technicolor C2000T modem, but that wasn't one of my options, unfortunately. Thanks to anyone that can offer up any tips on the matter. -- oz

DSL disconnects if I have Voicemails

$

I have POTS telephone service with CenturyLink, formerly Qwest. On the same line I have DSL through an Actiontec Q1000 modem/router with proper splitters. About once a week or so, usually first thing in the morning is when I notice it, the internet won't work. Log in to the Q1000 and it shows disconnected from the DSL. I pick up a telephone and listen to the stutter of the dial tone indicating that I have unheard messages and then it smooths out to regular dial tone. I don't even listen to the messages. I hang up the telephone and then the broadband connects and then the ISP connects. I don't use the land line much and my message says that I don't check messages very often. I don't really need the voicemail, it was just on the line when they turned it on. I am probably paying for it too. I would really rather plug my answering machine back in so that I can listen as messages get left and answer if I want. I get messages left on the voicemail and it makes the dial tone do the stutter for a few seconds when I first pick up the phone. Is this really what makes the DSL disconnect? Is this normal? What is there that I can do about it?

Manual for C1000A modem

Multiple times I've downloaded what purported to be a manual for the C1000A modem only to find I'd downloaded a manual for the V1000H manual. Does a manual for the C1000A exist? I even tried Q1000A (assuming C for CenturyLink and Q for Qwest) but that changed nothing.

Centurylink secretly throttling customers.

Living in a rural area I only have a single "broadband" provider, Centurylink. So I have been with them for a few years, with their 1.5Mbps plan, which is the max I can get. I had reliably been getting get a sync rate of 1760/288 which gave me a download rate of 1.5Mbps, as advertised. All was usual until noise showed up on the line, which would caused me to lose sync with the dslam. Even though I would lose my connection a few times an hour I still managed to sync at 1760/288. After a week of this headache I called data support and they agreed something was wrong and the noise was fixed quickly by the local centurylink tech. Even though the noise was gone and I have a SNR better than ever, I'm now syncing at 1472/288. Not once have I seen 1760/288 since I contacted them. I have multiple DSL modems and all 4 of them gave me the same sync rate, even though they are different brands. When I called data support again to ask for them to restore the original rate, they said the contract I agreed to requires them to only provide 80% of the rate they advertise and they go give a crap what I think. Oh before I forget, he did suggest I reset my modem... :p All I can conclude is that they looked at my account, since I called them, and decided to throttle me without notification nor have I EVER been notified about bandwidth usage. Just can't believe Century is going to short me 15% of my speed when I spend $50 a month on what I think of as "modern day dialup". /rant - time for some pictures This is my current speed test (was not downloading anything else during the test and did many different cities) [att=1] Found out one of my nicer modems has a hidden menu with much more technical info. Recent snapshots. - #1 - Shows that my modem can sync much higher than they are allowing [att=2] #2 [att=3] #3 [att=4] All want is my 1760/288 back, is that too much...
