I am paying for 10 for my internet speeds and I only get .42 on speedtest.net. When i call century link, which i have been calling them for over 2 years now, they tell me that i have to go to centurylink.sppedtest.net to check my speeds because the other websites arent good, but low and behold there website says my speeds are alot higher than what speedtest.net shows. OF COURSE!!! After always having the run around with them on the phone, cvoming out to my house, and the server is like 1000ft from my house. There is no issues from there side only on my side. They h ave no idea what it could be. When my internet is slow, it is freaking slow!!! I cant even watch a youtube video in 720p. This is ridicoilous!!! I am typing so fast write now because I am so angry at these people for never fixing my internet speeds. There was one time that some guy came out to the box that was down the street from me and changed a line or something and it wa s great for like 6 months and now once again its the samw thing. They never fix the problem! Try to download a game or your ping for your games, yeah right!! That will take forrever!!! These people suck so bad and they need to fix my internet. I am so sick of paying for 10 and not getting atleast 8 or9. never use these people they always give you the run around and its always the same thing they say. Its my computer, its my line, its my modeom, its my server, its my blah blah blah blah!! They have changed everything that they can possibly think of and my computer and wiring in my house is new so thats not it. Also when they gave me a new modeom/router it was the same exact one. I would think they woiuld have a better one then the one i have, but i am not sure on that one! Never usre these people!!!

[CenturyTel] ZyXel 5001Z WPS button
Hello,
I have a ZyXel 5001Z modem. I do not have a separate router connected. The WPS button on the modem occasionally flashes red. I would assume this means someone is trying to access my network. Is this correct?

Synch'ed faster than service!
I've had CenturyLink 12Mbps service (12122/896) for about 18 months, This morning I did a speed test and my line is faster! Looked in my modem and it's now synch'ed at 15869/889. Guess I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts :)

No DSL service in my area yet
My girlfriend bought her house 2 years ago in a somewhat rural area of NC (White Horse Dr. Shawboro, NC 27981). Before she bought the house, she checked with the state's broadband map (»www.e-ncbroadband.org/) and it showed her as having Centurylink DSL in that area. Well, it was a lie. Fast forward to recently, still no service despite it being shown on the map (There is DSL close by though, 10mbps within a mile) I contacted the GIS Specialist/Data Administrator and she stated to me that "I looked through our original data and confirmed that these areas were reported to us as served by CenturyLink...CenturyLink reported serving 11 census blocks and over 100 street segments in your zip code". She also said she was going to contact Centurylink about the matter as well.
I then contacted Centurylink themselves, and after being on the phone with them for awhile, their rep talked to an engineer who said the local equipment "was not set up for DSL services and she saw no plans too". Their equipment for my area appears to be on a main highway with a fiber optic line marked about 20 feet away.
Is there any way I can nudge them to expand DSL to my area? I went thought their official channel of requesting service there but that was close to 8 months ago. They have DSL service all around the area except for that small corner of the county served by that equipment. I hate to make it sound like a venting post, but it's frustrating when a company reports to a state agency and essentially flat out lies about having service in an area when they don't (nor have any plans to). I really want to move there and locate my business there as well, but high speed internet is a must (and a hotspot wont suffice unfortunately). There are PLENTY of neighbors that are waiting to get internet service there as well. Any thoughts?

centurylink Avilla,IN bad again. Fixed 1st time by FCC
During peak hours 5pm-12:30am.
I'm pinging yahoo at an average of 500ms. Google @ 150ms. Bandwidth ranges from .7 to 10 down and .3 to .76 up.
I usually will ping 30-40 to chicago, google, yahoo with 10 down and .78 up.
I just started having problems during peak times on 4/28/2013. Even during non peak hours everything is at least 10% higher on pings and 10% lower on bandwidth.
They said in order to consider this a problem you have to average 300ms on the ping... which 100ms ping isn't acceptable to me.
If for whatever reason they won't fix this issue within a 24-48 hour window as I was told on the phone after arguing to get the line looked at,
I'll file my seconda(2nd) FCC complaint against Centurylink.
I've documented everything since I started having poor service and I won't hesitate to file after the 48hr window.

Just a question only. I didn't see anything in the Century Link manual. I couldn't find a "real" manual on line, but didn't go to Actiontech yet.

FTTH router question
Hey everyone -
I'm in Broomfield CO and have centurylink fiber to the home 40Mbps/20Mbps service and love it. It was installed with a zyxel FR1000z router rented from CL -- I'm pretty sure that it's just taking raw ethernet in and running PPPoE. Since I've got a couple of extra routers, I'd like to replace the zyxel with one of those, but can't figure out the settings (service name, PPP Compressino, MPPE Encryption, etc.). Anyone have any ideas? I tried configuring one of my DD-WRT routers as PPPoE, with the username, MTU, etc. that I was able to pull from the zyxel but to no avail... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-Justin

slow Centurylink DSL speeds Central Ohio - 9/21/13
Just checking in to see if anyone else in the Central Ohio area has slow speed issues today (9/21/13). Download speeds are usually in the 5-6 Mbps range and today it's been running at about .6 Mbps. Submitted a ticket to CL earlier this morning.

only get advertised speed after modem reboot
So this is really starting to get under my skin! I've been through all the customer support pages and on the phone and live chat & I'm not a dummy lol! Yes I've got the cables plugged in correctly mr. Centurylink yes the green lights are on mr centurylink (that what I mean by them treating you like a dummy) anyhow problem specific is I only qualify for the 7 which is just fine and fast for what I need it for. But I only get my advertised speed when I reboot my modem (actiontec m1000 with wireless module) I know most of the time your only suppose to get like 70% or so but that's just it, when I reboot I get 7.2 to 7.5 consistently! over my rated speed but only for a couple hours or so I haven't figured out exactly when it does it then I'm consistently at 0.8 to 1.2 to 1.5 never higher. I reboot the modem and tadah right back to over 7 every single time! So I don't see this as a congestion issue or time of the day issue or hogged bandwidth as ive tested while streaming on other units in the house and all by itself. Is there something on the modem configuration page I can change or any ideas at all! Getting frustrated! I even have my 192 modem config page saved in my phone so I can just reboot it under the utilities tab quickly anytime I want to get my speed back up! Thanks for any help

Testing a CenturyLink/Qwest modem
I have DSL on order and am looking at a Q1000/z used modem from craigslist. The seller does not have DSL to test the modem but I do have an active service at work. How much of a hassle is it to swap modem just to test it out.

[Embarq] Slow Internet speeds
I live in Montpelier Virginia which is in west Hanover County. Centurylink which was once Embarq is the only hardwired high speed service provider in the area and lately service is hit or miss. I use this service at my office where I repair computer systems and also at my house down the street and download speeds during the day are very slow sometimes it comes and goes and I notice at night at my house the speeds seem to be so slow you can't even use the Internet. I got a speedtest.net test to run and get 79 ms ping, but for the 7.1 megs I normally get my download speed was consistently around 0.20 and the upload speeds are 0.12. Video games do not play at all and Netflix can't even stream standard picture without it stopping to buffer for over 1 min every 20 seconds. My clients who live in the area who have me fix their computers all report the same problem and some even come to me thinking their computer is broken when its not the computer, but the Internet service provider. There has to be some issues with the D-slam because the service gets more and more unstable every day.

Is CenturyLink engaging in unfair practices?
The policy at CenturyLink is if you sign on for a 7MB connection, and you are only receiving 3MB, because a 3, 5, and 7MB connection all cost the same, your account does not deserve to be credited.
The logic here is based on the plans all costing the same, not giving the customers what they expect to get. They say once the plan starts it is up to the customer to determine the bandwidth you are getting is what you signed up for. If you didn't find out for several weeks that the bandwidth was 3 MB and you were supposed to be getting 7 MB, your account does not deserve a credit.
Is CenturyLink engaging in an unfair practice with customers?

[Qwest] An article on the CenturyLink Qwest merger
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/50992070-79/merger-qwest-utah-centurylink.html.csp
I just found this and wonder if this part has seen action:
The Utah Public Service Commission has issued an order approving the pending merger between CenturyLink Inc. and Qwest Communications.
After a review of the transaction, the PSC said it determined the merger is in the public interest.
As part of the review process, the companies committed that once their combination is completed they will invest a minimum of $25 million in broadband infrastructure in Utah over the following five years.
It doesn't feel like anything has changed for the positive in Salt Lake. :(

CL C1000a keeps locking up
Was iptables DROP - turns out it wasn't. CL supplied C1000a at random locks up, power, dsl, internet light on, solid. Can't web, can't telnet, can't ping - I can pull the power plug and restart and it's good again - for a few hours? a day? then locked up again.
CL (non)support "You need to reboot your computer." "Your modem is bad and we can sell you a new one." Any thoughts on the problem and how to fix? Also, is there a better modem than a C1000?
Thanks

Constant modem restarts, esp with games/skype!
I have been dealing with this issue for months now and have already learned a lot about how modems and networks function just due to the fact that I can't seem to get anyone over here from CenturyLink that isn't just a phone tech! Here is the issue:
The modem restarts. It isn't just the internet going out, the entire thing restarts. This happens ONLY when I am actually using the internet. If I'm not actively doing anything, even if I have a game or pages open the net tends to stay on, but as soon as I get on a game (Aion, Cubeworld), Skype, Vent, and actually do something/talk, it is only a matter of time before the modem reboots. This also happens during specific times of the morning without fail. 2 AM it starts, often, and continues until about 4:30am where it goes into spazz mode and reboots over and over until about 4:50am.
I have looked very extensively online for a fix, most of them saying it is the modem. I originally had a Westell 7500; it got changed to a Zytel pk5001z, then got another one because they thought it might be faulty, and then an Actiontec pk5001a, and then back to a Westell 7500. All do the same thing, so it isn't the modem. The last tech that was here changed the wiring just outside of the house and created a new line, which helped the speed a lot (which was the initial problem, no DCs, that started with the Zytel).
The only things I can see pattern-wise is that there are always initial far-end CRC errors. Always. At least 150, but that's on the low end. I have brought that up to techs but they say they've checked the lines and it's all good (though my neighbour says he's having similar issues, don't think as bad as mine though). Otherwise all of the other stuff like power, attenuation and the like are very healthy. I have tried updating with an OpenDNS, tried moving my PC outside of DMZ, (I am wired by the way, and there is another wired computer connected which I don't believe is the problem since it goes out when mine is the only one using those programs). I have tried so many things, have spent hours and hours on the phone with Centurylink, had many tech visits, and have just about gone insane.
What causes modems to reboot entirely? How can I figure out if it's some kind of incompatibility. Explain like I'm a newb, too, because I am. Pls respond. 3

[CenturyTel] cant set up port forwarding: ActionTec Q1000
Hi,
I've joined to see if anyone has any insights into configuring Port Forwarding on the Actiontec q1000. The motions themselves are simple; there are many resources out there explaining and showing the steps: put in a starting port, an ending port, a protocol ,and an IP address and hit "apply".
my issue is that when I go through these motions, the router does not accept the changes. When I hit "apply", the modem gives me the "please wait" message and then when the web page comes back, there are no entries defined in the list.
My Q1000 setup is pretty basic, i.e. I've set up a non-default IP and DHCP ranges and turned off Wireless is all (I have a Netgear N600 as a WAP, i.e. no DHCP). Other than the Port forwarding issue, all is well with the network, including wireless and wired access . FYI I'm just now starting to play with port forwarding in order to set up Directv GenieGo
thanks for any insights. yes I've reset the modem to factory defaults and re setup everything. CenturyLink and Actiontec are both manifestly worthless support resources.
