[CenturyTel] Centurylink San Juan County, Washington, outage

$

Just a post to mention that the entire county has been affected by a severed submarine cable owned by Centurylink. Part of the county has had no long-distance POTS service and no DSL, and almost no cell service from other providers (since they used CL's cable). Centurylink is the sole phone and almost the sole internet provider in this county. We are in the 4th day of this outage and counting. Through the assistance of the county electric cooperative, 911 service throughout the county has finally been restored.

Hi I have a ZyXEL 660HW D1 V2 from Centurylink but I don't want to pay 5 dollars each month. I would like to buy my own modem. A modem that allow me to connect with ethernet and wireless to my laptop. A moderm similar to ZyXEL 660HW. I live in Naples, Florida 34114. Centurylink is the company which I get internet service. I have seen many modems at bestbuy and walmart I don't know what modem will work. I don't play games online. What modem should I buy? Thanks

C1000A dropping offline

Every 2-3 minutes I am losing my connection to the C1000A. Not the DSL mind you, the modem itself. The C1000A claims my internet is good and never drops, the lights all stay green. However all computers lose their connection to the internet for 20-30 seconds, then it comes back. On the other hand, the computers themselves are not losing connection to each other. I have my office network (gig-e switch, NAS, desktop, and printer) connected to one port, an Airport Express base station connected to another, a security DVR connected to the 3rd, and finally a Lowes IRIS home automation system connected to the 4th. When my internet drops, all of these machines can see each other and ping each other just fine; however not only does the internet go down, the router page at 192.168.0.1 is unavailable and does not respond to pings. Actiontec went in circles for an hour and a half with no resolution, the tech basically seemed like all he knew how to do was anything that was pre-scripted. To me this looks like an internal hardware failure between the chip that handles the ethernet switch and the processor that runs the router software. Any ideas or other possibilities? I have removed the other devices one at a time to see if its anything triggered by a bad device, but the problems continue. I have the latest firmware, etc. I am beyond frustrated.

CenturyLink / Embarq Blacklisted

Started getting NDRs today. Seems CL's servers are blacklisted. I emailed them and this is their response. Hello, We are aware of delivery issues to servers using SORBS, SpamCop, MIPS, UCEProtect, and other block-lists. A mail administrator's choice of block-lists is an important one that should meet the needs of their subscribers. While the implementation of such block-lists may best suit an organization's spam filtration needs, it may also cause deliverability issues such as yours. We are unable to comply with the delist requirements of some block-lists as their removal policies are not perceived as viable throughout the internet community. Unfortunately, we can only recommend that you and your intended recipient contact the ISP email administrator and request that they reassess the use of such lists or to setup a white-list entry to permit your continued email exchange. So... who do we hate? CL or SPAMCOP, et al?

Buying a set-top box for Prism TV

Hello, I have had PrismTV/internet/home phone with Centurylink for about a year. I like it. Its not perfect, but its nice and the whole house DVR is cool. I have one whole house DVR box which is a Motorola VIP 1232 box. its black in color. I had a silver one originally, but they changed that out about a week later to the newer black one. The DVR is included in the price of the Prism TV service. I also have 2 set-top boxes which are Motorola VIP 1200. They are silver in color. These boxes cost me $8.95/month each ($18 month total). Looking on ebay.com, I noticed that several vendors are selling the Motorola VIP 1200 boxes for around $20-30. I spoke to customer service at Centurylink today about another matter and she said that I could probably buy my own box and use it in the place of the one I am "renting" each month. Since it would be paid for in 3 months, this seems like a good savings. However, a CSR doesn't know a lot from a technical standpoint. The company on ebay that is selling these boxes just gets them wholesale and really doesn't know anything about them. I'm willing to get one and try it out, but I don't want to waste a bunch of time if there is going to be some firmware incompatibility or something. It looks like a lot of these IP set-top boxes are also used for AT&T Uverse TV. I'm thinking it might take a service call to program the box into their system. When my original service was installed, the tech punched a lot of numbers in with the remote to get it to program into the system. the price of a service call would cancel out the savings of not paying for box rental.... Has anyone purchased a set-top box and done this? Thanks, Mr. Style

Can't enable bridge mode in c1000a (Resolved)

I run my own router/firewall and so prefer my modems run in bridging mode. My old Motorola ran ran great for over 10 years this way. My current Zyxel does too but I don't care for it. So I got my hands on an Actiontec c1000a but I can't seem to enable bridging mode for it. The CL instructions are quite clear and easy. But after hooking it up to my laptop in order to configure it and hitting "Apply" to enable bridging on the appropriate config page the menu returns as if nothing had happened. Same thing after a reboot of the modem. I'm pretty sure this is not normal; after enabling bridging I expect the modem to behave like a brick that can't authenticate i.e. I shouldn't be able to get to the modem's config pages. At least that's how my previous modems behaved. This is my second c1000a and it the behavior is the same for both. It works fine in non-bridged mode and the firmware is the latest that's listed on CL's support page. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Why is WPS blinking red/orange on my ZyXEL PK5001Z?

I've had my ZyXEL PK5001Z for several months now, and it's been pretty reliable. For the past couple days, our internet speeds have been dodgy, which I chalked up to CenturyLink issues. Yesterday, a laptop actually lost connection to the LAN. Rebooting the laptop seemed to resolve the issue. Everything else has stayed connected to the LAN as best I can tell. I noticed the WPS light on the modem blinking red/orange. I've never seen it do that before. While this was happening, everything seemed ok initially with my computers, except for the intermittent internet speed drops. When the light blinks, it may do it for several minutes and then go back to a steady green like normal. I rebooted the modem/router via the GUI which made the blinking light quit, but the internet speeds were still dodgy. I've did NOT do a hard reboot (by putting a pin in the small reset hole). I was trying to avoid that because I didn't want to have to re-establish the connection with all my devices. Today, internet speeds tanked and we lost internet connection for a while on 2 wifi connected PCs, but the PC hardwired to the ZyXEL maintained an internet connection with decent speeds. At the time, the WPS light was burning a steady green like I'm accustomed to seeing. So, I turned everything off and rebooted the ZyXEL by pulling the power cord. It booted back up, and when I turned on all the computers, everything connected just fine and the internet speeds are as fast as they've ever been (maybe a little better). However, the orange/red blinking WPS light is back. Again, it does it for a few minutes and then goes back to green. It seems random, and it doesn't seem to be causing any issues with regard to internet speeds on any of the devices. (I just did a speed test via speakeasy and download was 11.46. I've never seen it over 10 and on average it's around 7 to 8.) I have had security disabled on the ZyXEL from day one. I live in the middle of the woods with no roads or residences within miles. Leaving security off makes connecting my media player and other devices easier. I apologize for the long post, but I thought some background was necessary. So, what does the red/orange blinking WPS light mean? This has never happened before and I've made no changes to my settings or setup.

No Love for ZyXEL PK5001Z

I had to replace my modem only Century Link 660 Series with ZyXEL PK5001Z. I have a Hawking HAWNR3 which is my router. I have set the PK5001Z in transparent mode to that my Hawking router will work. I can NOT get out onto the internet and it is very frustrating with this new device. How I wish the 660 Series was working. I am using the HAWNR3 to talk to a Hawking Range Extender and then to a Bridge/Access Point were an Encoder is attached with4 camera's. I am able to talk to the Router when I open a web page and am able to ping the Hawking router, Range Extender and Bridge/Access. BUT I can not get out onto the internet. I have spent many hours talking to Century Link's tech. NO GO yet. HELP ANYONE????

Fees for moving LV $29.95 10Mb dry loop on contract?

I recently renegotiated another year of the continuing CenturyLink Pure Broadband (dry loop) 10Mb $29.95 promotion for the Las Vegas region. I'm in the process of moving and need to figure out what is the lesser of the evils, an ETF (still in 12 month term) or service moving fee. I believe the ETF is just shy of $100. -- Marriage Equality | Consumerist

Training at lower speed

Over the last few days I have been upgrading some of our home phone wiring. Therefor, I have had numerous disconnects and retrains during the process. I now have it set for optimum syncing performance. The only problem is, my modem am no longing training to the internet at 23,103 Mbps, I have been dropped down to 20***Mbps. Is this because numerous disconnects I was inducing??? In addition, I have signed up for DSL monitoring thru "DSLreports.com" as part of the Centurylink monitoring group (could this be the cause of the downgrade??). What will it take to get the speed boosted back up to where it was? DSL Power Levels Downstream/Upstream SNR: 29 dB 30 dB Attenuation:14.7, dB 1.7, dB Power: 17.1 dBm 1.6 dBm

Repost? CenturyLink router security

Hi folks, I could have sworn I posted something yesterday but I may have just be reading the preview. Basically I just wanted to note that I've found at least one CenturyLink customer that has their modem's web admin page accessible from the Internet, and they haven't changed the password. This particular customer (a relative) has no technical wherewithal and certainly didn't change it herself. Subsequent searches using shodanhq.com indicate that this might be a default configuration for some modems. I would suggest you go to one of the port checking sites (some examples below) to see if port 80 is accessible on your modem. If so, you may want to log in and disable that functionality or at least change the password. Someone from the Internet could, in most cases, set up port forwarding and/or change wifi settings so that they could potentially compromise your network. I notified CenturyLink of this issue about four weeks ago, so they have had some time to review and implement a fix for new customers at least (unconfirmed). [CenturyTel] 4 DSL Lines (bonded or load balanced) vs MOE Circuit?

$

I live in rural Peyton, Colorado. Up until now, we've been stuck on 12m/896k VDSL2+ for the last year and a half. I've been terrorizing CenturyLink every few months to see if there is anything they can do about the abysmal upload speed. I run my own domain that the entire family uses. Since moving (from a house that had fiber to the home and nearly unlimited speed packages), I've been struggling to keep the same level-of-service for all the services my family uses. The last technician who came out walked the line and stated due to overall distance, attenuation, SNR, retrains, etc... that we were lucky to even be getting the 12mb/s down. He said the 896k was so much lower because the DSL modem simply does not have the juice to push a clean signal all the way back to the DSLAM. He recommended I convince CTL to allow me to move to a business account and get a 'bonded pair' setup. He said I will have to switch out to a business DSL modem that would accept both lines (MLPPP?). I finally got ahold of a fairly competent sales rep who was happy to set me up. He said that I could basically pair as many lines as I wanted together for a speed equal to my current rate * n (n being how many lines I went with). I was skeptical. I have no idea how many lines are run to the average house (from the street), but I was only counting on the four wires (2 pair). He said "trust me, there are many wires run to the house for possible future services). He told me they were $29 per line, and that I would have to run a DSL modem for each. He also said he was not sure what the technician was talking about, as he didn't know of a way to actually "bond" the lines. He simply said that each line with have to be aggregated via a load-balaning route (eg: TP-LINK TL-R470T+). I said sure. Sign me up for four lines. They are coming out Monday. So I called the technician, who knows his stuff. He said that I will have at least three pairs going to the house, may six. He said he could run new lines easy, then have them bury them a few days later. No biggie. However, he questioned why I would do four separate lines when since they were allowing me to use business services, why would I not go with an "MOE Circuit". He had never actually set one up before (though he did help another technician do something he called "line conditioning"), so he wasn't sure what all it would do. He did say that is basically required 8 DSL pairs, and a box installed inside the house. He also believed I would get 40 up / 40 down. He had no idea about pricing, so I said I would research it (which means coming here). Before I call and ask the sales folks what the heck an MOE is (the only thing I can find online is "Metropolitan Optical Ethernet"), is this even possible in a residential neighborhood with a single DSLAM? I'm definitely enterprise networking savvy, but I know very little with it comes to telcos and how DSL-type stuff works. Thanks in advance!

[CenturyTel] Century Link Speeds in Mounds View MN 55112 zip code?

The online tool by address doesn't seem to be working today. I'll likely be moving to Mounds View in January. I'm hoping (though not optimistic) that DSL speeds will be better than 1.5 down. If anyone can give me an idea actual speeds I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Century Link terminating service

I get a nice love letter from Century Link today saying they are terminating my internet service in December for high usage. The letter stated that I was notified two times prior to this one. Obviously I was not and they could not answer how I was notified and then wanted me to go to a business account. So if you have Century Link there's a chance they will shut you off without any warnings other than a final one. Time to go back to Mediacom I guess and cancel Directv while I'm at it.

[Prism TV] Bought 20Mbps but only got 12Mbps

i have this issue going back and forth with CL tech and Support. They have sent out tech to look at everything (and my house is in a newer sub-urb) . he did a bunch of changes to the wiring outside the house and was never able to get the line to go above 18Mbps (raw) Sitting behind a M1000 Actionquest modem via one of the CL speedtest, i only show about 12Mbps download. My SNR is 10/14, Attenuation is 18/7 There are some Near End CRC error , about 60 in 3 days also both Near End RS FEC and far end RS FEC in the 300-400 range I am suspect that the M1000 isn't capable of the reported theoretical 20Mbps . Has anyone able to get decent download 16+Mbps on M1000? I am just about ready to go out and buy a C1000A but just want to make sure it's worth buying.

Very slow internet speeds.

Long story short. We have had Qwest/CenturyLink 1.5Mb DSL for about 7-8 years. Service has always been solid with actual speedtest speeds of ~1.3M/800k...until about 2.5 weeks ago. Unless it's the middle of the night (2am-4am), our internet is close to unusable. Peak time speeds of 150k down, but our upload speed is the normal 800k no matter what time of day. I've been in contact with support 2-3 times now. I've gotten a few different stories. They finally made an appointment for a tech to come out. He called the the day of the appointment and said he wasn't coming as they are "working on lines in our area" and that "our internet would work, but would be very slow and that everything should be fine in 2 weeks". That was 2 weeks ago and service hasn't improved. Phone reps seem to have no clue of any "line work" being done in our area, and say our line shows no errors or congestion and our modem is trained properly. Nothing was changed on our end that we know of. Everything just slowed to a crawl one day. Here's is my WAN status from the modem currently. These are normal SNR/Attenuation numbers that we have always had give or take. VPI: 0 VCI: 32 DSL Mode Setting: MMODE DSL Negotiated Mode: G.DMT Connection Status: Showtime Speed (down/up): 1536 / 1024 Kbps Number of Retrains: 1 Number of Retrains Elapsed Time: 2 Hours 43 Mins 20 Secs ATM QoS class: UBR Near End CRC Errors (I/F) : 0/0 Far End CRC Errors (I/F) : 3/0 Near End CRC(Within last 30 mins)(I/F) : 0/0 Far End CRC(Within last 30 mins)(I/F) : 0/0 Near End RS FEC (I/F) : 0/0 Far End RS FEC (I/F) : 371/0 Near End FEC(Within last 30 mins)(I/F) : 0/0 Far End FEC(Within last 30 mins)(I/F) : 0/0 Discarded Packets(Within last 30 mins): 0 SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream): 16/8 Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 56/31

Has anyone successfully ordered 40/20 along with Prism?

$

I'm looking at buying a house in the next few months, and looking at the options where i'm looking to buy 40/20 is available (i currently have 40/5 over pair-bonded) I currently have Satellite, but would not be opposed to using Prism after using it at a friends house the other day, my only hangup is I do not want to go below 40Mbps as we have a lot of connected devices and two of us in the house do a lot of heavy downloading generally at the same time. My question is, will century link let me do either 40/20 and prism on a separate line coming in, or just do an 80/40 pair-bonded line, with 60/30 being available for the home internet, and dedicate 20Mbps to Prism so we will be able to do 4HD streams? I know it's "technically" possible to do this, but i am just curious if anyone has gotten CenturyLink to actually do it? I refuse to go back to Cable, as Cox's network leaves something to be desired here in Phoenix, and my CenturyLink VDSL2 has been fairly reliable after finally getting a C2000T from them, so i'd like to stay with them if possible.

Century Link Data-Cap

I was wondering if it was ever clarified whether or not Century Link enforces a data-cap? I use a traffic monitor that is built into my netgear router/modem and have been watching how much data I send/recieve..... So far this month I have downloaded 547 GB and uploaded 21 GB..... I watch a lot of netflix and download a lot of games. I haven't had my service shut off or limited in anyway thus far.... Does anyone know if there is a cap and if there is, how much would one have to download to get capped?!?!?
