[CenturyTel] Disable routing features?

$

I am moving soon and signed up for 40/20 DSL service from CenturyLink at the new address. It looks like I am pretty lucky to have these speeds available. I have always had service through a cable company, so this is my first experience with DSL for my home. When using DSL modems as friends/family members houses, it seems that the DSL modem has a built-in router and wireless access point. Is there any way to turn off the routing and wireless features of the DSL modem provided by CenturyLink? I have an ASUS router flashed with Tomato firmware and I do not want to run into a double-NAT issue. I just want to be able to plug my router into the DSL modem and have it issue my router a Public IP address (just like what happens with my cable modem).

Upgrades in the neighboorhood: Gilbert, Arizona

A Century Link person rang our door bell today. Sadly I heard none of the conversation nor did I get to ask any questions. The better half says he claims they upgraded our neighborhood with a faster connection. Anyone know SPECIFICS about this? I don't dare call customer service as I believe them to be nothing more than sales department drones who don't care about providing you information as evidenced by our previous call prior to installation to them. Speedtest says 30 ms ping, 24.35 Mbps down .81 Mbps up. Not bad for the 20 Mbps package. -- http://hackThatPhone.com

[CenturyTel] Centurylink - random latency spikes

Hi all, Throughout the evening I had been experiencing random lag spikes as I was trying to game (nothing more frustrating than 50ms to 600ms). I decided to keep an ongoing ping throughout the night, and this is what I have found: Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=392ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=619ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=599ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=611ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=623ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=616ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=606ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=624ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=606ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=620ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=606ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=636ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=607ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=631ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=614ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=628ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=612ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=619ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=643ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=615ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=650ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 Reply from 74.205.62.55: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=118 These spikes happen randomly throughout the evening and lasts anywhere from 50 pings to about 500 pings. The century link team told me they guarantee speed but not latency. Is there anything I can do? thanks

Anyone here doing a bundle deal with CL for Sat-TV, Inet and phone? I'm paying nearly $90 now for phone and 10MB service from CL along with Comcast's $111 HD-TV that keeps going up by nickels every month. I'm looking for options with CL rather than ComFinity because I have issues with them. -- --

CenturyTel vs CenturyLink - IMAP

If you find you need IMAP from CenturyTel/CenturyLink to support your tablet, smartphone, or other 2nd email device, never contact CenturyLink to create an email address in CenturyLink.net domain. You will find your old email account with CenturyTel.net will have been deleted. Furthermore, you will also find that your internet access will be disconnected with no prior notification as well. All of this could be avoided with CenturyLink internet support were to be consistent in their information and simply advise you that you cannot have both a CenturyTel.net and CenturyLink.net email address. Background reason: your xxx@CenturyTel.net email address(es) are hosted at an 3rd party vendor and once deleted you will NEVER get the email address at CenturyTel.net back. I have spent countless hours not only the phone with 'customer service' and 'internet support' (including national support desk, engineers, and supervisors) but also with all my other vendors, contacts, financial institutions in updating my account/email information after the unauthorized deletion of my CenturyTel.net email address. Only one of approximately 11 contacts within CenturyLink organization was somewhat sympathetic to the unauthorized and disastrous email address deletion. If you must have IMAP and have a CenturyTel.net email address just create yourself a GMAIL account (or any one else that supports IMAP) and NEVER contact CenturyLink to do anything with your "legacy" email address.

Oddest problem with CTL to date. Please help!

Ok, so many last week I started have issues with my latency. I went from having a fantastic steady ping rate of 19-20ms on every hop, without a drop for over a year. Around a week ago, my mom was complaining of her game (CoasterVille on FaceBook) lagging and when I ran a DoS ping test to google (which is usually my most stable site), I was getting between 19-350ms on average, with some hops returning at 1,500+. Well, after having a field tech out today and our problem still completely unresolved, I called CTL tech support. This is where it got interesting and left both myself and the tech clueless. So he had me boot up in safe mode and I was still having these issues. Dropping packets at a very high rate on my end. His last suggestion was that I ping the gateway and what happens? I get timed out pinging the gateway IN SAFE MODE! The culprit is not and can not be the Ethernet cord, so that's out. It also can't be the computer, as I was running in safe mode. The modem is literally brand new (P5001Z), as is the phone cord that connects the line to the modem. No filters on any of our lines; no need for that either, as the field tech split the line. My questions are as follows: 1. What would cause me to time out from the PC to the modem, knowing that all of the hardware is fine? 2. What would cause my ping to sporadically spike and become unstable? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been a member here for years and I've never had an issue I couldn't at least come to understand. This one is far above my head and I can't process it, whatsoever.

Poor service

I used to be a customer of Qwest, of coarse now it is CenturyLink. I had my house built in 2005 which is in the country 2 miles from town. When the tech installed our phone lines said that we would have to wait 5 years for DSL to be at our house. Which made no sense to me when a gentleman 1/2 mile from here can get DSL to his house. Now, its 8 years later and still no service! When I call CenturyLink, they can't even find our address on their computer system. Most recently, I called and the kid on the phone tells me he a specialist and that he will look into this matter, but after being on hold for 45 minutes. He comes back with, " have you tried satellite internet. However, he has no answer as to why I can't get DSL other than they can't find my address. As well as, offering a T1 connection at a high price.

[Qwest] Ping issues for gaming?

Hello, I've been having some ping issues lately. I don't know if it's my ISP or the routing I use (which would be CenturyLink) but this has been going on for almost a month and I want to find out where the problem would be. I've got a bunch of tracerts linked below so we can hopefully find the server or servers that can't handle a lot of traffic (seeming as my ping spikes most during "primetime" (7-9 cst). Thanks in advance. http://puu.sh/4p5J5.png http://puu.sh/4p5Fc.png http://puu.sh/4p5Em http://puu.sh/4p5DH http://puu.sh/4p5CN (keep in mind most of these tracerts are to chicago servers and I live about ~60 miles from Chicago)

I have this modem that when I run the internal test it comes up Ethernet fail. But if I turn on my PS3 and my PC at the same time the test will pass and my speed's for both go up. I spent half an hour with centurylink who could not figure it out and said its not that much of a drop with in 80%. So I am stuck having every thing on till I can figure this out. Any suggestions????

How to lodge complaints ?

Not a technical issue but wondering if others have ideas on how to proceed. I did review of CenturyLink and vented a bit but here is the big picture. I had a DSL Modem go bad and the one that CL provided to replace it did not allow me to VPN to my work. I contacted tech support numerous times and they even did a 3-way call with Actiontec. Nobody could get VPN to work and they did not care. So a few months go by and I am moving. Since their service doesn't work and they don't care whether it does or not or whether I am happy with my service or not, I changed to a different ISP. Only to get a bill from CL for $200 for "leaving my contract" early. Bullshit. I never agreed to a "new contract" and even if I did the service just did not work. So I have contacted CenturyLink Customer Support numerous times to dispute the charges and have found them to be the rudest, biggest assholes I have ever had to deal with. So I am NEVER going to pay their fucking bill until I get an apology from those assholes for wasting MY TIME and just AGGRAVATING THE PISS OUT OF ME. Which of course will never happen. So, my question to the community is how to fight back. I was thinking of contacting my State's Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau, etc. Are there online consumer complaint areas that actually work. What if comes down to is that I have a credit score of over 800 and have never refused to pay any bill in my entire life; I am 52 years old. So, if this is going to go on my credit history I want to make the fucking assholes at CenturyLink pay. I want to drag their name thru the mud in every way possible. So to the community, what is the best way to fight back ? What sites/organizations would have the biggest impact ? Sorry if this is a repeat or is covered somewhere else. I'm a newbie. First post. Thanks for the help.

Centurylink Assigned Me a Blocked IP

My only option at this point seems to be finding a new ISP, but I thought I'd post to see if anyone has other workable solutions. In July I requested a static IP address for my dsl connection, since some of my clients use IP authentication as a security measure. My family isn't part of the Facebook crowd - we only access it sporadically -- so the first couple of times we had problems, we assumed it was a FB outage or due to DNS oddities that appear to creep up from time to time. I ran virus and malware checks that came up clean, checked the browser settings, Win7 and router firewalls, etc. I got a successful ping and tracert so tried 5 browsers on my desktop plus a wireless Macbook and laptop - no joy for anyone. When I called support they figured FB was just down for a while, and it did seem that various outages were being reported online. Of course, after a few days with no improvement, the next step was to try a proxy - got right through -- and to take one of the 'blocked' laptops to Starbucks -- got through there as well. So of course I call support and walk them through my testing (which is a very short sentence for a very long process during which I was on frequently placed on hold). They said it had to be my router (CL C1000A) so did a remote reset. No luck. During one time I was on hold, after 45 min the call was dropped. When I called back, I found the tech had put into the system 'can't get on the internet' rather than 'can't reach FB and here is everything that they tried.' So I had to walk the new tech through everything again. The tech agreed with me it had to be the IP. But still had to send a new router, which of course fixed nothing. Finally, they turned off the static IP, I grabbed a dynamic one, and got right through. But when they tried to get me a new IP, apparently it is impossible, because that IP is permanently attached to my account, unless it somehow gets randomly assigned to another person while I have it off. Unless I pay for a block of 8 IPs, I'm stuck. I've emailed FB in hopes of reaching an actual person, but don't have much hope. CenturyLink just says that nobody on the planet can override an IP assignment and I will have to just use the dynamic IP instead. I don't understand why there is nobody in the company who can manually change my assigned IP. Or at least change my username if that is what creates the association, THEN assign a new address. I've spent about 8 hours on the phone about this, and not counting the testing at home, and am curious to know if Centurylink truly can't help or they just don't feel like it.

[CenturyTel] Does centurylink have a 30 day satisfaction guarant

Its been just over a week and the bandwidth exhaustion in northern Indiana has me fit to be tied! I love the service between the hours of 7am to 7pm....then after that. I go from 10/768 to 1/256 with ping times over 200ms. I've called tech support, they don't do to much to help me out. So, I'm hoping they have a 30 satisfaction....anyone know?

Centurylink Business (and BS "verbal" 3 year contracts.)

I work out of an office building and while I don't have centurylink (dropped after a month because charter entered the building and for the same price I get 50/5 internet compared to 10/768kbps... no brainer.) The thing is, a lot of people who are trying to switch to charter are being told that they are in 3 year contracts, however no one ever signed a contract, no one was told they were entering into a 3 year contract, and centurylink is being rather idiotic about the ordeal. Is the reason centurylink puts businesses into 3 year contracts because they know they can't compete and will eventually lose when competition surfaces? Currently 3 businesses in my building are dealing with the 3 year contract BS. Charter doesn't do contracts where we are at but anytime I make any changes I get an email and have to go in and "digitally" sign the document agreeing to the changes. According to the three businesses, they were never informed they were entering into contracts, and one business said that they had verbal confirmation of a contract (how would that hold up in court?) Why is centurylink so shady about contracts? I mean most companies for business will try to get contracts but at least they are up front or mention it somewhere, I don't even see any mention on centurylink's business site (not that they tell you much on the site, it's all just call in to find out crap.) /rant over

The tech came over yesterday unannounced for the pre-wire and I did not have the key for the phone room. He told me that he will return today at 9:00AM to complete the job. Surprise, he did not show up and I left him voice mails asking if he was coming. After 8 hours he calls me back to say another tech has the order and will be in tomorrow. The problem is I will be out of town for 2 days and the salesperson knew this. I just canceled the order, might stay with Direct TV I already have internet, phone and Verizon or go to Comcast after 7 years with Qwest and Century Link.

[CenturyTel] Century Link's poor service

I live in Denver's suburb. I lost DSL connection on 9/16/13. I have verified that my MODEM and internal wiring are OK. I tried 2 known good MODEM right at the box on the side of the house, the DSL LED still blinking for no signal. I hook up a spectrum analyzer to the loop, no DSL signals at all. I call CL, asking them to look on their side for problem. CS determined that they have to send a tech out to fix the problem. They won't be able to send someone until 9/20/13. I told them that it could be something as simple as my line was accidentally disconnected at the trunk because I saw a tech working there half an hour before I found that my line went dead. I walked along the areal line between my house and the trunk, but saw no damage. My area was not affected by flooding anyway. It was sunny all day when the internet went dead. What I would like to complain to CL is that 4 days to roll a truck is unacceptable for the service. I do understand that problems are different, some simple some is not. There are numerous of way to speed up the service w/o costing much more. I was told by ex-CL tech that majority of problems between the house and the DSLAM is where the physical wire connection is, if not at the DSLAM itself. A visit by a tech to the remote DSLAM could be done with multiple tickets related to that DSLAM. Each remote DSLAM visited by techs with different tickets many time per day anyway. Easy problems could be taken care of in parallel and reduce customer down time.
