I used to have DSL service provided by Centurylink and ISP service by a 3rd party company. I signed up for DSL two decades ago and at the time Qwest had to allow other companies to connect to their DSL lines and provide internet service. My DSL modem was setup for ATM with a block of static IP addresses. The ISP I used has been bought out again and again over the past 20 years I've been with them, and finally the current owning company has decided to shutdown their DSL hosting business. I changed my service and now have Centurylink as my ISP/DSL provider and no longer have static IP addresses.
What setting should I have my C1000A set to? PPPoA or PPPoE? They both appear to work. A web search says that PPPoA is slightly more performant than PPPoE due to less overhead.
The change over to Centurylink was this morning and resetting my modem into PPPoA mode put it into a walled garden mode. I provisioned my PPP credentials using connect.centurylink.com and it set the credentials and connected me to the internet. I ran PPPoA all day, but at dinner, my internet connection died and the system log complained that the PPP credentials were no longer valid. Resetting my PPP creds and trying to provision it through connect.centurylink.com again, resulted in the website saying the service wasn't enabled for my account. I called up centurylink, and they did something on their end, and had me manually enter in the PPP creds and things started working again.
Could this be some thing on their end that doesn't want me using PPPoA? Or is this some other strange behaviour after a service change?

questions about bonding
So i've had CL DSL for several years and have been generally happy with it; even zoom and so forth seems to work pretty well. I recently got a "ring" doorbell / camera and that may have tipped me over the edge and would really like to get some more upstream bandwidth...
My current actiontec C1000A says it is "VDSL2 - 8A", with speeds of 21.823 / 0.986 Mbps
According to CL's site, at my address I can have either
15 / 0.750 mbps (I assume this is what i have now; and I currently pay $40/mo, they seem to be giving me a 5 dollar loyalty break)
OR
30 / 1.50 mbps currently quoted as $49/mo "price for life", plus a $99 tech install, plus $15/mo modem lease ($200 to purchase from them).
Would going to the higher tier even make much difference, i wonder?
I haven't called them yet; what should i be able to get them to do? waive the $99? how about the monthly?
Also, are there more economical choices for modem (rather than 15 lease, 200 purchase from CL)?
I just generally feel bad having to pay the same as the next neighborhood over where they get 60/5 for basically the same price I pay. I feel like they're punishing me for living in the "wrong" neighborhood! :-(
I had always imagined when I got this going with CL five years ago that over time they certainly would upgrade the infra in my neighborhood -- obviously that's not going to happen.

How do I use the century link modem ans a modem only?
So I finally moved and have my Century Link DSL all hooked up. I got an Actiontec C3000 A modem/router from them. I have my own router and WiFi router and I don't want to use theirs so can anyone please tell me how do I disable their router so that it functions as a modem only? I want to plug my router in like I used to do on cable. My old cable modem was a modem only, so it went from the modem to my router. How do I do that with this thing?
Thanks

Moving my modem to a different room?
So I have a new house with what they call a "technology center" in the garage. Fancy name for a box in the wall where the telephone wires and cable TV wires go. The DSL guy installed my modem in that box and it is pretty darn hot in there so I think I would like to move it to a room in my house.
Inside the box the DSL line from outside comes in (looks like standard cat 5e) and connects to a regular looking telephone jack block. He wired 4 wires (2 pair) to the block and then plugged the modem into that block. Also in the same box are a bunch of cat 5e network cables with no ends that go to every room of my house.
So what I am thinking is that I can take one of those wires and connect it to that telephone block using the same color scheme and then do the same in one of the rooms and I should be able to plug the modem in that and it should work, or am I missing something?
And if it does work is there some kind of wiring block that I can replace that standard telephone block with so that I can plug all the rooms in so that I can move the modem to any room in the future without having to do this again?

Change from Spectrum cable Internet to Centurylink DSL?
Around here Spectrum's lowest tier (available to me) is the 200Mbps package. That's way more bandwidth (and cost, and tired of the "try to get a new promo" thing) than I need at a 2nd location so thinking maybe to drop Spectrum and go with Centurylink DSL with their $49 for life deal.
I currently have Centurylink POTS and when I put in my address for availability it says up to 60Mbps.
Does that give any indication as to the type of DSL connection?
Any "gotchas" maybe I'm unaware of in consideration of such a change from cable modem to DSL?

Is this garbage company ever going to actually implement meaningful fiber upgrades? Best they can still do at my house is 6mbps dsl. What a massive lol in 2021.

spam filters gone after getting 'migrated' to v9 mail platform
subj says it all. automatic spam filters (and the setting in webmail) is gone. mail has been all spam (and LOTS and LOTS of it) all the time for the last week (or more, depending on account). support says spam filters are gone. no longer supported. nothing they can do. use the other filters (simple rule-based filter or blacklist, hah. like that'll work).
they actually shut down some of our accounts for "too much spam" -- which was INCOMING, of course, not getting sent out. well, DUH and a half -- you shut off the filters, WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN?
i guess Centurylink REALLY don't want to be in the mail server hosting biz, because THIS is how to get everybody to dump their mail accounts for something else. and just when i finally convinced everyone to 'just use webmail' because of piss-poor connection reliability between some third party clients and CL.. they go and basically force Outlook on people just for the junk mail filters.
i'm gonna suggest to people to suck-it-up and switch their mail to one of the big-3, yahoo/microsoft/google and leave CL, instead. that way they aren't tied to CL's mail, either, when they want to switch to starlink satellite or cable or muni fiber. you can also tell google to fetch your CL mail, and it'll run its filters on someone else's mail. you can also config gmail to send mail out under your CL account, if you wanted to. and for our own mail, i guess we'll have to sub to a third-party service again, which he hadn't really needed so we shut it off long time ago, but we sure as hell do now. we are NOT, EVER going back to outlook.. and now absolutely no reason to keep CL. when starlink goes mobile, our business will, probably, too.
just wanna give everyone a heads-up. support is helpless, so you're on your own with whatever you figure out to do.

Is the Greenwave C4000XG vulnerable to FragAttacks?
Hi,
can't find any changelogs for firmware CGX007-01.02.05.22
Assuming Greenwave had months of advanced warning for the https://www.fragattacks.com WiFi vulnerabilities, is it fixed? Or not? Asking CenturyLink support got me a recommendation to change my SSID and WiFi password :(
Thanks!

CenturyLink speed upgrade limited to 100Mbps
I was supposed to get updated bandwidth but my download speeds still top-out at 100Mbps. I tried rebooting my modem several times but still see the same numbers.
I've had CL 100Mbps service for less than 2 years. Recently, my address showed up as having 1 Gbps service availability so I ordered a package with higher speeds. I was told to keep my CL landline phone I would get a max bandwidth of 750Mbps, which would still be great.
My CL modem is a C1100Z. I see the WAN connection as 1000Mbps (Downstream and Upstream rates are also 1000Mbps) when logged in as "admin" to the modem. I am wondering if it's my home's wiring that's the problem or if there's still something in the CL configuration or on the modem that needs to be tweaked. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
BTW.. CL support told me to wait until the following day after the order was processed and check again.. Still 100Mbps download speeds.

How does this wiring look?
Customer Service said we can get a 100 Mbps upgrade over pair bonded copper, the maximum available. Install tech said if that doesn’t work he can groom one line and give us 60 Mbps.
Since 2010 we've had 20/896 with an Actiontec PK5000 and a landline (former Qwest). With nothing besides one computer connected to the network, speed tests via ethernet have been 10-12 down and 600-700 up. Seems slow and doesn't work well with Zoom.
A few years ago they replaced our ancient NID and the cable going to the pole but the speed didn’t change.
In the last picture, the black wire comes from the pole. The horizontal fat white wire is no longer in use. The upside down U below it is the old ground wire which they re-used. The gray wire that becomes white that comes down out of the bottom of the NID is the one that goes into the attic and can be seen at the bottom of the Attic 1 picture in between the 2 white wires.
Also in Attic 1, the white wire on the right is attached to the others but the other end is not attached to anything and is coiled up on the right side of the picture.
Wondering if any of this wiring is slowing things down and will continue to do so after the upgrade.
Install tech said if we run cat 5e to the new modem, the blue pair and orange pair need to be tied down on the jack for line 1 and line 2. If we do that, can we leave the attic wires as they are since the land line works fine? Will we still have the same NID?
Thanks!

[CenturyTel] Business Install
So our business is thinking of moving. The only internet choice for now at the new building would be CenturyLink.
When I punch in the address on the new building under small business it shows 40/3 there. However, under the additional information tab it shows 1TB data limit.
I thought business were not under caps. Am I missing something? or is this there just to be there?
I am asking cause our current location has fiber and we go over 1tb monthly as it is.

Static IP for residential fiber customers?
Does anyone know how to lease a static IP for residential fiber service?
The instructions at https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/static-ip-addresses/how-to-setup-static-ip-address.html say to use the Static IP tool at http://goo.gl/yGR7CE, but when I try it just says that my account is not eligible.
I called tech support to find out why I'm not eligible but the agent told me I had to request static addresses over chat. I went to chat and every agent just transferred me to another agent. After being transferred between literally 10 different agents I finally ended the chat after about 40 minutes.
I tried calling telephone support again and this time a different agent told me that static IPs are only available for business customers, but the website doesn't say anything about this. So is there a trick to this? Are static IPs still available for residential fiber customers?

Slow CenturyLink speeds
So at my mother's house we pay for a 40 down three to five up connection and over the past few weeks maybe more past few months we have had really bad air speeds randomly in the afternoon and at night.
I have ran the CenturyLink on my troubleshooting tool and usually when I run it it reports interference on the line and open the ticket with a tech however this issue is so sporadic it's not reproducible in the tech is here.
I was able to grab a screenshot as the issue was occurring from the modem at one point and this is what I saw.
When the last tech came they tested from the outside box of my mom's place and said the speeds were fine but I should get rid of my Aruba access point and go back to just using CenturyLink equipment because that was the issue.
I don't agree with that because it's a brand new Aruba because I replaced the ubiquity equipment thinking it was possibly an issue with that and both cases we have had issues and we always contract back the slow speed to the modem.
Any ideas of what I could point out to to the text that they don't instantly jump to the fact that they think it's a access point issue? Does anything stand out from the stats? I am more familiar with my home cable than a DSL. I will say we've had CenturyLink for 6 years and this is the first time we've started having issues

How to save voicemail as audio file

Fiber Evening Slow Down Suddenly Fixed
We've been on 1 gbps fiber with CentruyLink for almost 5 years and it has been flawless (never thought I would say that before fiber came to town!). However, last week, the dreaded evening slow downs started happening, but it didn't affect upload at all. During the evening it would go from a ping that is normally 1 or 2 ms to 75+ ms, download went from 930 mbps, to 1 mbps, and upload remained stable at 930 mbps. Discussed with Centrurylink multiple times and everything from their end looked good so they decided to send me a new router. I received the new router today (C4000XG), but have not used it yet because the speeds have returned to normal again. My question for you all is do you think they fixed something on their end? Sure seems like it, but I'm not sure how to get an answer from them. (I'd also like to return a $200 router that is unnecessary). Any thoughts are appreciated!

I have business fiber with C400XG - can I swap in my own hardware?
Is the ONT provided by centurylink durable? I have over 100 pc's and every 30s or so my ping times are going to shit and get a few timeouts as well.
Also looking for a nice enterprise router suggestion.

C2100t and Synology NAS
I'm thinking about buying a Synology NAS and was curious if it would work with a C2100T (it would be connected via ethernet).
Also curious if I should see if I could get a new c4000gx modem/router? Is it worth it?

Network Set up
I have CL and have been very happy. I do have a static IP because I have a server I sometimes want to access via a website I made. Basically teaching myself and I just wanted to do it this way. I do have a static IP from them. It is programmed on port 4 of the CZ3000 router. I did have a tp link (Archer &) behind it for a while acting as a firewall. Again, just part of my learning how to do things.
Worked great. But, I accidentally upgraded the Archer7 and it reset all my settings. Now when I connect my upload speeds are almost zero.
I pulled the archer and let the static dhcp to my server and I can hit my website just fine but again, if I try to upload a 50 meg file, it is VERY slow. If I am in the house it all is great but that doesn't help.
Can anyone give me an idea where I should start to look?Port Forwarding etc...I am wondering if CL didn't make some change I don't know about.
I would rather have the router behind router config if possible. but I will take what I can get.
thanks

[CenturyTel] CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A for $26.40 (Delivered)
I've watched eBay for longer than a year, hunting for a suitable CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A backup/replacement. Last week, I ran across a smoking deal, took a chance, and jumped on it. It was advertised as "For parts or not working."
It arrived, this afternoon - no cables, no power supply, no nothing - just the bare unit. I figured, for $26.40, if it was "not working" I'd keep it around "for parts."
I took it out of the shipping box and hooked it up to a spare Netgear power supply, that was laying around. Boom! It fired up. So far, so good.
Next, I saved a copy of my (working) C3000A's config file to a USB stick, and used it to restore/clone the (working) config file to my (eBay) C3000A.
Finally, I powered down my LAN, switched out the C3000A boxes, and powered up. Boom! The backup/replacement is performing perfectly.
I'll attach a couple of snaps to this post; one showing the initial power-up test, and the other showing the eBay C3000A replacing my original C3000A.
Matter of fact, I'm using the "For parts or not working" modem/router, as I type :)
