[CenturyTel] CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A for $26.40 (Delivered)

I've watched eBay for longer than a year, hunting for a suitable CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A backup/replacement. Last week, I ran across a smoking deal, took a chance, and jumped on it. It was advertised as "For parts or not working." It arrived, this afternoon - no cables, no power supply, no nothing - just the bare unit. I figured, for $26.40, if it was "not working" I'd keep it around "for parts." I took it out of the shipping box and hooked it up to a spare Netgear power supply, that was laying around. Boom! It fired up. So far, so good. Next, I saved a copy of my (working) C3000A's config file to a USB stick, and used it to restore/clone the (working) config file to my (eBay) C3000A. Finally, I powered down my LAN, switched out the C3000A boxes, and powered up. Boom! The backup/replacement is performing perfectly. I'll attach a couple of snaps to this post; one showing the initial power-up test, and the other showing the eBay C3000A replacing my original C3000A. Matter of fact, I'm using the "For parts or not working" modem/router, as I type :)

Ordering online with CenturyLink issues

So, I went to order CL simple business 100/10 online. I chose the self-install kit option and went to check out (but did not hit the submit button yet). I clicked on a link to read the terms and conditions and a new tab opens and says "Thanks for your order!" with order number install date and everything. I go back to the other tab and it's still the same, not submitted yet. I check my email and have a confirmation with order number and install date from CL. I check my CC pending transactions...nothing. I check my CC pending transactions the next morning (today)...nothing. I go into my CenturyLink account and it says I need to add a payment method...yeah. Long talk with CL, but I end up cancelling as they want to charge me $60 for a tech to do the install. They said on 100mb connections a tech is required, and that the online orders don't go through often and you have to call, lol. Do I really need a tech for the 100/10? Really? Does anyone have experience with this?

[CenturyTel] Actiontec C3000A firmware

Does anyone know what the differences are between these two firmware's for the Actiontec C3000A? The upgrade screen is showing: current firmware version: CAD004-31.165L.13 available firmware version: CAD002-31.165L.4 upgrade status: Firmware is up to date The modem is showing my firmware is up to date and typically the available firmware box is blank when the firmware is up to date. It seems like something strange is going on with this screen. Also my current firmware looks like a higher version than what is showing as available so I'm debating if the available firmware is really an upgrade. Centurylink does list the CAD002-31.165L.4 as the latest. Before changing anything I would like to know what the CAD002-31.165L.4 changes. My connection is a 20/2 bonded ADSL2+

Is this new order going to be a bonded line?

I am about 400 feet away from the DSLAM. Currently, I have a Centurylink residential account that gets 60/5 with a single pair and I usually always get that speed. I placed an order to get a small business DSL which is 80/10. The work order states: Job Description: HSI Bond_VDSL2 Second Loop New Biz Install Will this new 80/10 small business DSL be bonded? If it is bonded, wouldn't the speed be able to be 120/10 (double the single line 60/5)?

It's my mom's DSL/Router combo. She or my sister purchased it at some point :-( Now it's dead, and CenturyLink wants $15/month or $200 to buy new one. My mom's service is 12MB and that's all she needs. I am looking for a combo unit that will do the job. No frills required. Suggestions? Thanks, Jeff –––––––

I use ExpressVPN. When I try to send or receive email through it, the CenturyLink mail server won't respond. I have to turn off the VPN to use mail. I've told the VPN to not let Thunderbird, my mail app, use the VPN, but I still have the problem. Does anyone know a VPN that works with CenturyLink?

Stuck in G.DMT mode

I always was on ADSL2+ with the ability to switch to lower tier line modes. Now since for a while now im stuck on G.DMT mode. Tried ADSL2+ and it says "detection failed". I barely can game now and I don't get connection speeds as advertised most of the time. Is there anyway I can get ADSL2+ line mode back?

Are ALL Pair Bonded VDSL2 modems created equal?

Hello again, I am getting ready to upgrade our service from 40/5 (actual is 25/3.6 which I set myself for reliable service) to 80/10 pair bonded service. We live in Tijeras, NM 87059 which is an old Qwest service area. Our current modem is the C1000A using VDSL2 via PPPoE. I already have our PPP username and password. But I am still torn on what modem to purchase for copper pair bonding. I was going to get the C3000A since it seems like the best all around, however since I have my own router ASUS RT-AC68U I was thinking of saving money and getting something like the C1900A or C2000T, which both can be had around $50 on ebay. But I had read that some people get difference results from different modems. For example one person said they got 36 Mbps out of the 40 Mbps tier when using the 1900A, but after installing a 2000T it had shot up to 42 Mbps. This begs the question. Will I be sacrificing speeds if I do not identify the best pair bonded modem? Going from 36 to 42, just from a modem swap is not a small deal. Also, I need to wire up the connection myself, and the only cable I have is CAT6 which is currently being used from the CL box on the side of the house to the phone jack. Is there a written guide somewhere on the internet that can better show me how to wire pair bonding up? Also can I find a guide on transparent bridging with what ever modem I eventually select? Thank you for the insight. Rod

Bonded pair or duplicate line and modem

Where I live I can only get 5 megabits per second upload speed from CenturyLink DSL have you ever heard if they actually do bonded pairs or if I'd be more likely to be able to get a second DSL line with a second modem to possibly double the upload speed the download speed of 40 is fine but the five is limiting some activities

Does Century Link still have a Retention department?

If they do, is there a specific phone number to get to them, or do you have to go through the chain to get a live person and request to get transferred.

[CenturyTel] Issues in the CFL 32712 Area

Greetings, I have family in the CFL 32712 area and over the past few months have started to have constant issues with CenturyLink. For 6+ years they had Prism and Centurylink dsl all great but as of recent times they have issues trying any streaming TV services and atleast 3 times a week they will have time where the home internet drops down from their 40 MB/s connection to less than 5. It's just become so inconsistent lately especially since COVID it's like they haven't kept up with bandwidth. It's not replicable since it happens at random hours of the day usually late afternoon. I ran the centurylink service assist and it said it "optimized the connection" but I'm not sure if that's just placebo to try to make me feel better. Anyone else having issues or know if improvements are on the way?

Wow, CL website says my tier speeds have doubled, so.....

Well well, finally after 6 years it looks like CL has finally decided to offer pair bonded service to my address without needing to be a business. Wish it was fiber but I doubt we will ever see that here. So, since about 2013 we have been on 40/5 VDSL2 service using a Actiontec C1000. Today, it looks like I am in the market to finally set up Pair Bonding using the Actiontec C3000A or the Zyxel C3000Z. Since the cable going directly to the modem is a direct outdoor rated CAT6 patch cable with only two wires being used I assume all I have to do is use another two for the pair bonding. I'm guessing orange/orange white and blue/blue white? https://www.leviton.com/en/products/41089-1wp https://www.leviton.com/en/products/41106-rv6 So, since CL requires us to do this ourselves I assume all I have to do is just connect an additional pair of my choice on both ends and in no particular order? Leaving the current pair alone? Since this RJ11 jack uses standard CAT5e/CAT6 color coding I also assume that the colors are correct and in the proper place for the 6P4C RJ11 phone jack? Will I have any issues plugging in a 6P4C jack into a 6P6C port? I already tried it myself with an existing RJ11 and it fit perfectly. If any ideas or tips before I get started please share... Please. By the way does it matter which Modem I buy for pair bonding? I would love to have just one unit with everything built in (modem + router + wifi AC), but if we need to use our Asus router in bridge mode that will be fine too. My Asus RT-AC66U_B1 AC1750 modem seems old by today's standards, lol. Was thinking of upgrading to the R7000, but it too is old now but still seems to be highly regarded. Thank you! Rod

Does Gigabit fiber in Portland OR have bandwidth caps?

Hi all, just wondering if I should contemplate making the jump to fiber in my Overlook neighborhood of north Portland. The price and speed (if real and not under-resourced) are attractive, but it would involve buying new equipment and all that. But if I've got to deal with bandwidth caps (just got my first 4k TV) in any case, why not stick with what I have?

Static IP on a Post Paid/CRIS Fiber account?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a static IP on a post paid Fiber 1G account? Went through a major pain in my side to switch my account from a pre-paid(Simplepay) account to a post-paid(CRIS) account for my 1G fiber, and still the tool says I am ineligible for a static IP at this time. Anyone else had this issue or know what I can do? Phone support seems useless unfortunately.

Line Condition Thoughts?

I currently have VDSL2 bonded 60/5 for many years. Lines has never been down for any reason. On both lines SNR are solid between 9.4-9.9. Up until about 8 months ago I never had CRC errors unless caused by a thunderstorm. Up until 8 months ago FEC error were about 1K on line 1 and 1.5K on line 2 every hour. Then FEC errors increased to 1.5k on line 1 and 4K on line 2 per hour. Also now I get about 6-8 CRC errors on line 2 per day while line 1 is always 0. Other than that lines have been solid all these months. CenturyLink has quit maintaining the UPS batteries at the DSLAM server also months ago if it matters. Thoughts?

C3000A and C3000Z routers

I signed up for Century Link internet November 2020. C3000A was purchased; landline in basement now has a splitter (?) for DSL plug-in and the landline plug-in. Wifi drops occasionally. Many calls to CL for help. They now provided C3000Z to replace C3000A. Same problems: when connecting, it looks like wifi is connected, but then typing a website, the wifi-icon shows 'warning' and then shows "no internet". Many times, I unplug laptops (happens on both laptops) and I walk to top of basement stairs, then walk down a few-or-all-steps to see if I can get a signal and reconnect. Yesterday, I walked all the way downstairs, waved my laptop around and around trying to connect, a few feet from the C3000Z. (other times, I have to power down laptop and start all over again.) CL tech this week-end said to buy an extender. The C3000Z is only about 10-12 feet from kitchen table/laptop, with the floor/ceiling obviously in between basement and kitchen. Any ideas why I am having sooooo many connection problems?

3rd Night In a Row With Super Slow Gigabit Fiber?

Really weird issue has been going on the last three evenings with my fiber Gigabit service becoming very poor specifically from ~5 PM PT to ~12 AM PT. The download speeds have gone down to 2-10 Mbps and the ping and jitter have gone up substantially with ping resulting in 34+ ms with high jitter to even the closest CenturyLink server that normally would give 1-2 ms ping with 0-2 ms of jitter. Upload speeds have gone down too but not close to as much as the download speeds have. What happens during this period of time is the ping goes slightly down every ~1-2 hours and the speeds go slightly up. Peculiar behavior. Any ideas what has been going on and why this strangeness has occurred? I am using the C4000XG gateway with the latest firmware CGX007-01.02.05.12 but this issue didn't start until 3 days ago or so.

Latency Increase in Seattle

Anyone else in the Seattle area seeing a drastic change in latencies to sites such as Facebook, etc? Looks like an issue between Level3 and former Qwest hops. This is typically a 2ms round trip - today it's 35ms. Noticing it affecting other sites that take this path. Of course Hop 5 is always hidden, so I can't make out the culprit IP.
