Building firmware image for C1000A or other Actiontec modem
I have some time off this Christmas and, as a possible project, I was thinking of customizing the firmware for my C1000A modem. Has anyone done this before?
I've downloaded the open source files published for the CAC003 and CAC004 revisions of the firmware and built what look to be root fs images for CAC003 so far. It doesn't produce .bin files, so it looks I have might have to break into the cfe boot loader and use that to flash new firmware.
My main issue is that on a successful build, although a new file system image is created, it looks like only the kernel and a few modules are created from source. The rest of the userspace code (httpd, busybox, etc) is pulled from a compressed tar file that was inside the open source tarball. So there's still lots of closed source code that isn't available and can't be modified.
Specifically I was hoping to re-enable SSH connections to a user shell on the CAC004 image as well as configure the atm interface to respond to multiple IP addresses (I lease a block of four from my ISP). Normally I have to run a script in a telnet session each time the modem reboots to add the ip-addresses, add snat entries to allow for NAT-Loopback, and other customizations.
Yes, I could probably put it into transparent bridge mode and add a router to my network, but where's the fun in that?

Upgrading to "Quantum Fiber"
Current Centurylink (former Qwest area) bonded VDSL2 subscriber (FFTN). They've been sending communications that FTTH is coming soon and signed me up for a "VIP invite list" or whatever. Lo and behold, I checked my availability today and it was there, but this time it routed me to this new Quantum Fiber website I haven't seen before when helping friends sign up for Fiber. I went ahead and signed up for an appointment on Wednesday (oddly the system even had Christmas appointments available). One of the questions was whether I was a current customer, I clicked yes and was told a rep would reach out to me about that.
My questions is what do I need to do to make sure I successful switch from DSL to Fiber, ie accounts etc. I had read in the past that Fiber is essentially treated like a completely new account, not an upgrade on your DSL account. So do I need to call to cancel my DSL account, do they handle that, etc?

[CenturyTel] A speed upgrade appears to be available
With all the talk about fiber and gig speeds, this may sounds trivial by comparison, but I’m almost giddy!
I’ve been a rural customer for over a year limping by with just 3mbps Internet service at my location. A quick check today of the CL website now tells me 10mbps is now supported at my address for the same price. Can this be enabled from “the office” or does it require a truck roll?

(some) fragmented IPv6 crashes C1900A
Anybody else notice this?
Hopefully some of the other DSL modems are better at their job? I'm in tukw.qwest.net, where it's 6rd over PPPoE. Repair wouldn't send me a new modem without scheduling a tech visit, so hopefully I'll get something better. :/
I can crash the modem from LAN or the internet, and a MTU test site will do it with just a browser on the LAN. :(
P.S. what modems do people like these days? I'm pair bonded vdsl2 80M/10M (syncs at 87/11)

help starting new service in Eden Prairie, MN
Please forgive me if these are ridiculously stupid questions.
I need new internet service started in Eden Prairie, MN. I’m told that only Century Link internet is available in the place I’m moving into.
Had a frustrating discussion with a CL phone sales person when I called this morning and it ended it early (after 25 minutes!) because I had to go to work.
My roommate and I do not want a 5G modem/router in our unit.
A question I didn’t ask but now wonder is: Do we need to buy phone service (have a land line) to get internet through CL? (There’s no doubt there’s a physical phone jack in the house and it’s probably been used in the past as a land line too.) One of their questions is “Do you have a working phone jack?” Are they asking if I HAVE phone service? Or just a physical connection that would work?
I can get up to 40 mbs for 49 bucks a month. (Or up to 80 mbs for 49 bucks but then need a service call and physical line upgrade for a one time 99 buck fee and don’t want the 5G speed anyway.)
The modem I can lease or buy with 40 mbs is pictured and looks like a C4000?? but the representative couldn’t be specific about the model number when I asked. And that has 5G! Can I just totally block the 5G part of it? Or should I buy a different compatible modem/router? (Suggestions welcomed if “yes.”)
Thanks in advance for any responses!

Wow, CL website says my tier speeds have doubled, so.....
Well well, finally after 6 years it looks like CL has finally decided to offer pair bonded service to my address without needing to be a business. Wish it was fiber but I doubt we will ever see that here. So, since about 2013 we have been on 40/5 VDSL2 service using a Actiontec C1000.
Today, it looks like I am in the market to finally set up Pair Bonding using the Actiontec C3000A or the Zyxel C3000Z. Since the cable going directly to the modem is a direct outdoor rated CAT6 patch cable with only two wires being used I assume all I have to do is use another two for the pair bonding. I'm guessing orange/orange white and blue/blue white?
https://www.leviton.com/en/products/41089-1wp
https://www.leviton.com/en/products/41106-rv6
So, since CL requires us to do this ourselves I assume all I have to do is just connect an additional pair of my choice on both ends and in no particular order? Leaving the current pair alone? Since this RJ11 jack uses standard CAT5e/CAT6 color coding I also assume that the colors are correct and in the proper place for the 6P4C RJ11 phone jack? Will I have any issues plugging in a 6P4C jack into a 6P6C port? I already tried it myself with an existing RJ11 and it fit perfectly.
If any ideas or tips before I get started please share... Please. By the way does it matter which Modem I buy for pair bonding? I would love to have just one unit with everything built in (modem + router + wifi AC), but if we need to use our Asus router in bridge mode that will be fine too. My Asus RT-AC66U_B1 AC1750 modem seems old by today's standards, lol. Was thinking of upgrading to the R7000, but it too is old now but still seems to be highly regarded.
Thank you!

3rd Night In a Row With Super Slow Gigabit Fiber?
Really weird issue has been going on the last three evenings with my fiber Gigabit service becoming very poor specifically from ~5 PM PT to ~12 AM PT. The download speeds have gone down to 2-10 Mbps and the ping and jitter have gone up substantially with ping resulting in 34+ ms with high jitter to even the closest CenturyLink server that normally would give 1-2 ms ping with 0-2 ms of jitter. Upload speeds have gone down too but not close to as much as the download speeds have. What happens during this period of time is the ping goes slightly down every ~1-2 hours and the speeds go slightly up. Peculiar behavior.
Any ideas what has been going on and why this strangeness has occurred? I am using the C4000XG gateway with the latest firmware CGX007-01.02.05.12 but this issue didn't start until 3 days ago or so.

[Embarq] New to CenturyLink DSL, IPv6 question
Good afternoon all;
I just had CenturyLink DSL installed, it is "up to" 140/20Mbps service which is being delivered on bonded VDSL2, and I seem to be getting every bit of that so no complaints.
I have a Sophos XG firewall that I use, so I put the CenturyLink modem (a C3000z) into transparent bridging mode and plugged it into my firewall's WAN port. The IPv4 connection came up fine; the firewall pulled a IPv4 public IP address and I can surf and do everything just fine. Before switching I noted the modem was using IPoE rather than PPPoE, if that matters.
What I can't do is get it to pull an IPv6 address. I noticed even before I switched to bridging mode that it did not/would not pull an IPv6 address either.
Is IPv6 not available on CenturyLink VDSL in the legacy Embarq areas of central Florida? Thanks in advance.

Static IP Price increase?
I've been considering adding a static IP address to my GPON service, mainly because I use IPv6 extensively for work, and the non-native 6RD solution changes my /64 every time PPPoE resets. Went to research this and found this page: https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/notices/staticip.html - noticeably absent here is any information on what the new price will be. Does anyone know what the new pricing will be?

No route to Bestbuy.com
So I'm experiencing my first strange problem; I can't get to bestbuy.com. I've checked the "down for me or everyone" type sites and they show it works. In doing a tracert, I get a few hops into the CenturyLink (qwest according to the RDNS) network and then it just dies at 75.160.222.17.
Anybody else seeing this?

Mesh system that is compatible with CenturyLink fiber (PPoE/VLAN)?
I just moved to a new home and and am wanting to upgrade to a mesh system for better coverage and to minimize wifi dead zones. I am not using CenturyLink's provided router and am instead using my own wifi 6 router (TP-Link AX50).
I believe CenturyLink in my area (Seattle) requires PPoE and VLAN tagging to work with your own equipment. I was wondering if anyone here knew of any mesh systems that support PPoE and VLAN tagging, and thus would be compatible with CenturyLink fiber.
I was also wondering if it may be possible to use my current router (TP-Link AX50) just as a switch and not as a wireless access point, and instead use a mesh system (connected to the AX50 vis LAN) as the access point providing wifi.
Any feedback would be appreciated!

Is this new order going to be a bonded line?
I am about 400 feet away from the DSLAM. Currently, I have a Centurylink residential account that gets 60/5 with a single pair and I usually always get that speed. I placed an order to get a small business DSL which is 80/10. The work order states:
Job Description: HSI Bond_VDSL2 Second Loop New Biz Install
Will this new 80/10 small business DSL be bonded? If it is bonded, wouldn't the speed be able to be 120/10 (double the single line 60/5)?

Possible to get CTL to switch current speeds ?
Currently on Centurylink's bonded VDSL2 100/10 circuit, & was wondering if anyone knows if my line stats would allow the lines to handle 140/20 speeds? Pulled up other address nearby where i live and they show that 140/20 is available

Getting Century Link Fiber service -- I am new to Century Link
Hello CL forum folks!!
I spend most of my time over in the Cox forum as I have Cox DOSCIS 3.1 Gigablast service. I have another townhouse being built in Henderson NV that has CL Fiber service (Cox chose to put in Doscis 3.1). Seems like a very good deal, $65 month for 1 Gb (or they say) + a Greenwave C4000XG modem + Install.
Questions -- I assume, unlike the Cox DOSCIS 3.1 tech where I have a modem (Arris 8200), the "modem" for CL is the Greenwave 4000XG which is a modem/router. It has wifi too, which I could care less about as I plan to put in all Ubiquiti stuff (Unify router and a few APs). They want to give me the modem/router for free, so I guess I will take it.
My questions:
1. Do I have other options to just get a modem (no routing) like DOSCSIS 3.1 specs provide, then to my router(s)? I assume no.
2. Any decent articles/pages anyone can point me to read up on?
3. Anyone else add their own router downstream from a "compatible" CL modem/router without issues?
4. I assume I can turn OFF WiFi on the C4000XG and connect another router to the C4000XG and use the C4000XG in "bridge mode"?
Thanks!!

Upgraded to C3000Z In Hopes Of Getting Faster ADSL Service
Due to my location, I'm stuck with ADSL service. My 1000Z modem provided stable 7Mbps. In an attempt to improve my speed I bought a C3000Z modem because Centurylink says it can provide up to 20Mbps ADSL. Installed today and my speed has not changed. Does Centurylink need to do something at the DSLAM in order to up my speed? If so, will they give me a hard time about it?

No bandwidth Cap confusion?
See the attached image, then look at my conversation with CenturyLink, one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.....
CenturyLink quick question, I have a price for Life 120M plan, when I was looking at your website today at what is available at my house(seeing if fiber was available) it says unlimited internet for a 60M plan, is this grandfathered into existing price for Life plans?
CenturyLink sent January 4 at 7:25 PM
Thank you for your message. Due to high volumes, our specialists may take up to 24 hours to respond. We apologize for this delay.
Please note, if your Facebook Security App and Website setting is turned off, we will be unable to respond to your message.
CenturyLink sent January 4 at 8:12 PM
Thank you for reaching out, Aaron. All of our plans would be considered unlimited. The 60mbps would actually be lower than the 120mbps. If the price was the issue, I would be glad to take a closer look if you would like to provide your account number.

You sent January 4 at 9:30 PM
Nope that's fine, century link in the past hadn't listed unlimited previously and I knew they had a soft cap of 1tb with my children home its been a struggle to stay under so if its unlimited I feel s bit better
Mon 11:32 PM
CenturyLink sent January 4 at 11:32 PM
I believe we've been more flexible with the cap recently, but just to be sure, what I can do check with a contact of mine to ensure that has been properly addressed.

You sent January 4 at 11:32 PM
So is it unlimited or a soft cap of 1 tb?
Thu 5:05 PM
CenturyLink sent January 7 at 5:05 PM
While I apologize for the wait, we are currently experiencing a massive increase in volume. This is causing extended hold times and extensive delays with our responses here. We thank you for your patience and ask that you please bear with us when it takes an extended period of time before we can respond. I was able to hear back on this. It does appear that we still have a 1TB cap for speeds under our 940mbps. The unlimited may have been referring to our Internet and phone bundles as our home phone is unlimited. My apologies for any confusion this has caused.

Replacement for C2100T
I have fiber with Centurylink using a rented C2100T.
The router does not correctly forward traffic on configured ports to the devices they are mapped to, and other controls such as limiting access to certain web sites do not work at all.
So I decided I should buy a replacement router and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good replacement router to buy.

Are ALL Pair Bonded VDSL2 modems created equal?
Hello again,
I am getting ready to upgrade our service from 40/5 (actual is 25/3.6 which I set myself for reliable service) to 80/10 pair bonded service. We live in Tijeras, NM 87059 which is an old Qwest service area. Our current modem is the C1000A using VDSL2 via PPPoE. I already have our PPP username and password. But I am still torn on what modem to purchase for copper pair bonding. I was going to get the C3000A since it seems like the best all around, however since I have my own router ASUS RT-AC68U I was thinking of saving money and getting something like the C1900A or C2000T, which both can be had around $50 on ebay.
But I had read that some people get difference results from different modems. For example one person said they got 36 Mbps out of the 40 Mbps tier when using the 1900A, but after installing a 2000T it had shot up to 42 Mbps. This begs the question. Will I be sacrificing speeds if I do not identify the best pair bonded modem? Going from 36 to 42, just from a modem swap is not a small deal.
Also, I need to wire up the connection myself, and the only cable I have is CAT6 which is currently being used from the CL box on the side of the house to the phone jack. Is there a written guide somewhere on the internet that can better show me how to wire pair bonding up? Also can I find a guide on transparent bridging with what ever modem I eventually select?
Thank you for the insight.

[Embarq] Is it common
Is it a common occurrence to have DSL signal but no internet for 20+ hours? My internet just literally died and stopped working yesterday at around 6:00pm. I have and continue to have DSL sync but just no internet.
Support says:
There is an outage in your area affecting your internet service as the device you are being served out of is experiencing an issue. We have escalated this to our engineers who are working towards a resolution and anticipate having this resolved by 02021-01-16 07:30:00 PM EST. We truly apologize for the inconvenience.
Since I got the service on 4th this has been the 3rd outage I've had and 2 of them have lasted for hours (this has been the longest so far). I know stuff happens but...
