PK5001Z Problems or CL problems?

Hi, I just got CL yesterday - and I have periods of constant disconnect. Today it was a couple times an hour, then a few more times an hour, and now every 5 minutes or so. I can't do things like stream videos or play video games without constantly being D/Ced Per other forum items I turned off the WPS, added my computer to the DMZ hosting list as well as made sure the firmware was up to date (version 16), and opened the ports for the video games I was trying to play . Tech support chat told me it was a physical issue - but I can't be convinced as his only data was seeing my upload/download was slightly off on my modem status. I'm wondering if this is a router issue, or an issuing with the DSL, or CL in general? For some reason, when the tech guy came, there were sets of ethernet cables / ports in one of our closets. Using an Ethernet cable he connected the "machine room" (some place in the apt building" to living room so the DSL would work. I was going to start trying to change that to other rooms to see if that would help? Anyway, let me know what other metrics you may need if someone could assist.

[Prism TV] PrismTV package sucks! Avoid at all cost!

I've been using Embarq 10m DSL for a few years, for the most part the service is fine. But when I added the Prism TV to the package, they had to give me a new router (Cisco DDR2200). That router is a fucking POS! If I hit anywhere near the max bandwidth and if there are other TV receivers turned on, it will just drop the connection. I've called tech support numerous times and they basically told me to deal with it. Well fine! I will warn everyoneI meet to stay away from your POS Prism TV service and post this on every forum that I'm on. STAY AWAY FROM PRISM TV!!!

[CenturyTel] Speed Drops at 1 PM Daily - Back to Normal at Midni

I have 3 X 8 Mbps Residential DSL lines, one with POTS. Initial install and operation first month nothing out of normal 80% guarantee. For the past several weeks a problem when each line speed drops from near 8 Mbps to 2-4 Mbps at 1 PM every day of the week. Then at midnight, all come back to near 8 Mbps. CenturyLink has been out several times and they say the DSL Modems (7500) are working right and have high enough synch. They think my Peplink Balance 30 is the problem. See snapshot of "normal" operation...nothing wrong with PepLink. Problem is definately CenturyLink, they don't seem to get the message. I think it's DSLAM Hardware/Software issue. Else why does it reset at midnight? Need some help, they are the only provider available. This morning just now the line speed went bad again...first time during morning hours. Something is wrong! (The speedtest site was not working right, here is 3rd snapshot from one that is right - so I am at normal speed this morning ... overall problem the same) Update: CenturyLink "all lines through Athens have reached Bandwidth Exhaust. The condition started August 9, 2012 and is expected to be resolved by November 15, 2013."

[Embarq] ActionTec GT874WN Setup on Centurylink (Embarq) N Carol

I live in Hillsborough, NC and have the old 1.5Mbps DSL service (not upgraded) from Centurylink, previously Embarq here. I wanted to switch out my equally old EQ-660 for an ActionTec GT784WN, so studied up on it here and found a lot of helpful info, but none that specifically addressed my setup, so decided to post to help others and for comment. For my install, I had to use the following procedure: 1) With EQ-660 still attached, release IP . . . important! 2) Install GT784WN, manually select Embarq to set basic parameters and 8/35 in particular. 3) Go to advanced and select RFC 1483 over DHCP (no user/pw required) That's it . . . took hours to figure out, but can be done in minutes for the next person who has the same service/situation. So far, this config is solid, better and faster than my previous finicky EQ-660, so am pleased I went through the pain. Note that the PPP status page will not report because RFC 1483 is not PPP, it's apparently an ATM protocol. Any comments from experts is greatly appreciated . . . Thanks!

[Embarq] Anything the customer can do to speed up DSL?

My family has a rural vacation home a few miles outside DeFuniak Springs, FL. Several years ago the local telco, CenturyLink/Embarq, extended their DSL service to the area, with the understanding that it wasn't going to be super-fast. (The local cable TV does not make it this far out of town.) What they offer is 1.5 Mbps service but what we really get is somewhat below 1 Mbps. Some of my family are interested in using a SlingBox so we can drop the expensive satellite TV service. My tests streaming TV over that ~1 Mbps DSL are mixed. It works but some shows have frequent pauses to catch up loading. In general, is there anything the customer can do to speed up a DSL slow connection? I understand that the major factor limiting speed is the length and quality of the phone lines between the DSLAM and the modem. I was just wondering if some modems might be better than others?

[CenturyTel] zyxel pk5001z firmware upgrade and Android 4.1.2

Hi all, I recently had my old modem only device replace with the above zyxel modem to attempt to resolve a constantly deteriorating line speed issue. Good news is that it seems to have stabilized but only time will tell. Now the interesting problem the new modem/router caused was with my android phone. It would no longer "authenticate" even with no security. A quick google indicated that many routers were having this issue with 4.1.2 (or vice versa) and the only hope was a firmware upgrade. Luckily there was for this router. I upgraded and now it authenticates with actual wireless security enabled. The new firmware is CZP002-4.3.009.16 I'm posting this in hopes that it may help others out there who may have been vexed by this issue. Now if only I could get some of that speed increase I'm reading about here... :) cheers, mikehd -- :( :) :D

[Prism TV] Adding a bridge router

$

I've got Prism and have had it for about 10 months. I've been pretty happy with it, but I've realized that my "smart" TV has some major connections problems to the router. I can't stream Netflix, Amazon, YouTube....very well. After doing some research on the TV, I found that the TV is supposed to be within 25 clear feet of the router, well that isn't going to happen, so plan B is to hardwire the TV.......here's the problem. Fiber to the house. CAT5 line from the basement to second floor where the modem/router is. I think this is a dedicated data line connected to the box on the outside of the house. Prism DVR "brain" is hardwired to the router. Everything else in the house is wireless and I have good coverage. I had thought that I could just move the Centurylink router to the basement, and put a bridge router in it's place (second floor). I've just now been told that the Prism system can't run off a bridge, so I'm stuck again. To hardwire the TV in the living room means I need a switch or a router in the basement to connect it to. I've considered moving the router and the main prism box to a different room, but I'm still stuck with the problem of only having on line of CAT5 run to each room. So the questions are.........does any of that make sense and does anyone have an idea for a solution?

[CenturyTel] Internet keeps dropping

This has been going on for a long time now and I'm not the only one here in West Columbia Texas having this problem. My sister doesn't live in my neighborhood and is having the same problem. Things need to be fixed here. My internet drops all the time and am sick of it.

Would I be a damn fool? ...

I must start by saying I have a rock solid Comcast connection 50/10 (tests out much higher) going on about ten years now. I am very happy with this, but runs me about $75 a month after taxes, fees yada yada ... I could drop down to the performance tier (20/5) , but would only save ten a month over what I have now and not enough to interest me at this time. CenturyLink in the last 1 1/2 yr has brought DSL to my area with promos of 20/896 for $29 a month. This price does interest me quite a bit, and could live with those speeds if that's truly what I receive. I guess my question is is that CL does not get great reviews in basically any category. Would I be making a mistake by dropping my cable internet service to Save some big $$$ going with DSL and CL? -- Not many people know this, but I happen to be quite famous...

Getting my Zyxel Q1000Z working on Centurylink

I was on Centurylinks website and seen the Zyxel Q100Z. I had heard others talk highly of this dsl router. So I got one off of Ebay....but its a Qwest. Can I change the setting in this modem to work with Centurylink? Customer support at Centurylink is telling me it won't work and that they only offer two modems that work in my area. Are they just trying to get me to buy one of their modems? or is this for real?

Taxes and "Fees" on T1 Service in Virginia?

Hello all, I live in a rural part of Virginia, and after weeks of negotiating with CenturyLink, I have finally talked them down to a reasonable price for T1 service at my home office. I just can't seem to get them to tell me what the "taxes and fees" will be. Can anyone provide an estimate as to what the normal "taxes and fees" are for typical T1 service through CenturyLink (or even another telco) in VA? Thanks!

[CenturyLink] Specific steps to set Westell 7500 as bridged

At the house I have CenturyLink Pure Broadband 10 Mbps and am trying to set my Westell 7500 (model A90-750022-07 VER:5.02.00.04) in bridged mode to my ASUS RT-N66U router. I've seen a few web sites with instructions for this device, but they all seem to be for a different model or firmware version and don't match up exactly. I can't seem to find what I need on the CenturyLink website either. I attempt to follow the directions I have to put the Westell into bridged mode, but I can't seem to get an IP address assigned from the WAN. The DSL sync remains solid, but actual Internet access is not being made. I can bridge the connection just fine using a Linksys X2000, but this device has issues with maintaining the DSL connection, so I'd like to get the Westell working if possible. Can someone post some specific instructions for bridging the Westell given the most recent model and/or firmware versions? Thanks for the help.

[Qwest] 4500 ft. loop, but 2 doors down/50 ft. away gets 40/20

$

My loop length is about 4500 ft. (per tech support), so I've only been able to get 20/.896 for the past few years. This always seemed odd to me as the physical distance to the DSLAM (a tech told me where it was) was probably around 1000, but I assumed it was just a quirk with the wiring design. I don't think the length number is inaccurate as my line stats for that speed are consistent with what I'd expect for that distance. As it turns out, every house on my street starting at the house two doors down from mine, is able to get 40/20. (On both sides, actually.) WTF? The physical distance between my house and that house is 50 ft. max. This isn't a rural area or anything either. I live in a decently-sized, decently high-density neighborhood in Marana, AZ that was built in 2000. Certainly doesn't make any sense that 50 ft. of distance would add probably around 3000 ft. to the length (assuming they're at about 1500 ft. to receive 40/20). Does this make any sense to anyone? Is there anything CL can do for me? Any options for receiving speeds higher than bonded 20/2 (highest I can get), besides paying my neighbor to run a modem at his place and running a 75 ft. Ethernet cable? :P (No, I'm not seriously going to do that, but it's ridiculous that I can do that!)

[Qwest] VDSL2 interleaving

$

Does anyone know if they'll disable interleaving on VDSL2 circuits as they'll do on ADSL? I recall back when they first rolled it out they would not, but I'm curious if that's changed. (They used to never disable it on ADSL circuits either.) (I'm just trying to determine if it's worth the effort to get switched to a VDSL2 circuit from ADSL2+.)

New CL DSL dropping out after first 30 minutes usage.

Looking for a little help/direction on how to proceed w/this issue. Recently moved into a new house, decided to go w/CL DSL and then Ooma for phone; the CL modem is the typical Actiontec C1000A. The problem is that every morning, after about thirty minutes of use, the connection drops; I must reboot the router, after which things work fine. Or course, I then have to go and power off/on my Ooma unit. Any ideas on why I'm seeing this everyday, under the exact same circumstances (30 minutes then dropped connection)? I hate dealing w/CL tech CSRs, as they take forever to work through their script and all of their suggestions have been already been tried, thanks to DSLReports. Jeff

[CenturyTel] Actiontec C1000A Overheating

Friends who I advise just upgraded CenturyLink to 40/20 service, requiring new Actiontec C1000A modem/router. (I set up their network.) They are reporting that the new hardware overheats and requires a cool-down & re-boot a couple of times per day. We'll take it back to CL, but I suspect they'll just give us another Actiontec C1000A. If the problem continues, what other modems (no router) or modem/routers should we consider? (BestBuy, online, etc)

CL DNS problem with video streaming ?

$

Recently I was having issues with streaming Hulu+ video on my TV (Panasonic Viera Cast) and after much trial and error and troubleshooting I conclude that its because of the CL DNS. With any other dns (opendns, etc.) it works just fine but as soon as I switch it back to the default CL dns it is practically unusable(buffering). Funny thing is DNS Benchmark and NameBench both report the CL dns as the best dns for me but it just doesn't work well for the TV. CL DNS are - 205.171.3.65 and 2.65. What might be going on here ? CL throttling video streaming ? or the server is not able to keep up ?
