My mom has had CL for phone and painfully slow 1.5 mbps Internet with Dish for tv for a while. She just switched to the CL triple bundle with 10 Mbps Internet and Prism TV. The install was yesterday and when the tech turned on the tv he could only get SD, no HD. Apparently he made some calls and his final conclusion was that she is 7200 ft from the remote DSLAM and therefore, would not get an HD stream.
Of course, the sales rep who took the order over the phone never mentioned this possibility. In that initial call for my mom, I did ask about upgrading to 25 Mbps and she said it wasn't available along with Prism TV. She said that 15 Mbps were dedicated to the TV signal and 10 Mbps for the Internet, but with the TV off, Internet speeds could jump to nearly 20 Mbps.
Latest ookla speed test shows Ping: 75 ms, dwn: 17.11 Mbps, up: .97 Mbps.
Does it seem logical that she could get 17.11 down and not have enough juice for HD?

[Embarq] Anything the customer can do to speed up DSL?
My family has a rural vacation home a few miles outside DeFuniak Springs, FL. Several years ago the local telco, CenturyLink/Embarq, extended their DSL service to the area, with the understanding that it wasn't going to be super-fast. (The local cable TV does not make it this far out of town.) What they offer is 1.5 Mbps service but what we really get is somewhat below 1 Mbps. Some of my family are interested in using a SlingBox so we can drop the expensive satellite TV service. My tests streaming TV over that ~1 Mbps DSL are mixed. It works but some shows have frequent pauses to catch up loading.
In general, is there anything the customer can do to speed up a DSL slow connection? I understand that the major factor limiting speed is the length and quality of the phone lines between the DSLAM and the modem. I was just wondering if some modems might be better than others?

Internet unusable when it rains and modem reboots at 10:40PM
This has been an ongoing problem for the last few years. Last Saturday it rained at around 10PM, and my internet was unusable the rest of the night. It wasn't until Sunday afternoon at around 2:30PM that the connection became semi stable. I checked at 5PM and the up-time on the modem was two and a half hours. I've had at least four techs out here for this problem, and every time I'm told it should be fixed, and yet, the next time it rains, the same thing happens. Every time I try and get a tech out here, they show up after the line has dried out and is working decently enough. No one has been able to fix this problem. I'm not looking forward to monsoon season with this problem.
Also, starting several months ago, my modem used to reboot every night at 10:40PM. Then on Sunday night after the 400+ retrain problem, it did it at 10:50PM. Last night, it was at 11:21PM. It's too erratic now. It used to be predictable at 10:40PM. I would know not to start a game until after the modem had rebooted, but I can't count on it anymore. I mentioned it to the last tech and he said nothing about it other than it was "weird."

[Qwest] Major DSL speed and latency issues
So I'm new to Century Link DSL and so far am not impressed. I am running on their ADSL service with a maximum bandwidth of 7Mb/1Mb. I live in a new construction home built in 2008. There is one line that comes from the CenturyLink (Qwest) service box to a Comtest NID-01 Splitter, Filter. The line splits there to the phone and then to the modem. The modem is a Actiontec GT701D running in transparent bridge mode. There is a Linksys WRT54G as my router and PPPoE authentication.
The problem i am having is very intermittent service. My speed ranges from 0.8Mbps to 8.0Mbps and latency ranges from 44ms to 800ms. This happens both during peak times and off hours. When i run a speed test you can see the speed jump up and down like you are looking at a hear monitor.
Router/modem resets dont help what is going on. Here are some Tracert results and speed test results

[Qwest] 4500 ft. loop, but 2 doors down/50 ft. away gets 40/20
My loop length is about 4500 ft. (per tech support), so I've only been able to get 20/.896 for the past few years. This always seemed odd to me as the physical distance to the DSLAM (a tech told me where it was) was probably around 1000, but I assumed it was just a quirk with the wiring design. I don't think the length number is inaccurate as my line stats for that speed are consistent with what I'd expect for that distance.
As it turns out, every house on my street starting at the house two doors down from mine, is able to get 40/20. (On both sides, actually.) WTF? The physical distance between my house and that house is 50 ft. max.
This isn't a rural area or anything either. I live in a decently-sized, decently high-density neighborhood in Marana, AZ that was built in 2000. Certainly doesn't make any sense that 50 ft. of distance would add probably around 3000 ft. to the length (assuming they're at about 1500 ft. to receive 40/20).
Does this make any sense to anyone? Is there anything CL can do for me? Any options for receiving speeds higher than bonded 20/2 (highest I can get), besides paying my neighbor to run a modem at his place and running a 75 ft. Ethernet cable? :P (No, I'm not seriously going to do that, but it's ridiculous that I can do that!)

Oddest problem with CTL to date. Please help!
Ok, so many last week I started have issues with my latency. I went from having a fantastic steady ping rate of 19-20ms on every hop, without a drop for over a year. Around a week ago, my mom was complaining of her game (CoasterVille on FaceBook) lagging and when I ran a DoS ping test to google (which is usually my most stable site), I was getting between 19-350ms on average, with some hops returning at 1,500+. Well, after having a field tech out today and our problem still completely unresolved, I called CTL tech support. This is where it got interesting and left both myself and the tech clueless.
So he had me boot up in safe mode and I was still having these issues. Dropping packets at a very high rate on my end. His last suggestion was that I ping the gateway and what happens? I get timed out pinging the gateway IN SAFE MODE! The culprit is not and can not be the Ethernet cord, so that's out. It also can't be the computer, as I was running in safe mode. The modem is literally brand new (P5001Z), as is the phone cord that connects the line to the modem. No filters on any of our lines; no need for that either, as the field tech split the line.
My questions are as follows:
1. What would cause me to time out from the PC to the modem, knowing that all of the hardware is fine?
2. What would cause my ping to sporadically spike and become unstable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been a member here for years and I've never had an issue I couldn't at least come to understand. This one is far above my head and I can't process it, whatsoever.

CL PK50001Z prevents sharing wi-fi
Recently got CL. after sending two different modems-all PK50001Z. Problem is I have three laptops. An old Toshiba running XP, a newer HP elitebook running W7, and a MacbookPro running 10.6. I can easily have the 2 Windows laptops connected to the internet and running the same SSID concurrently-no problem. As soon as I login with my MBP it bumps the Windows PC off the connection. With no other PC logged in I can connect the MBP to the internet via wi-fi with no problem. The modem has the latest firmware. Some online have said they have only been able to get a PC and a Mac to share a connection via MAC addressing.
1) Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
2) Am I connecting via DHCP or PPP? I never entered any PPP username, so it must be DHCP
Thanks in advance!

How CentryLink has made my life hell
Grab a cup of coffee, this is a long one.
---------------------------------The good (boring) stuff------------------------
So I recently moved, I wanted to bring my family a little further out of town. I found new home construction, and started making sure everything would work for us. I also telecommute into the office, I do this, simply because there is no actual office to drive to. So one of my concerns before making this move was my access to high speed internet. I talked to some of the neighbors before closing and found out that this area has fiber optic, provided by centrylink... AMAZING, close on the house, move the family everything looks good....
After I closed on the house, I had a tech from centrylink come out and install the service. Since it was fiber, I was immediately fascinated by the foreign equipment used. I am paying for the 10MB service, didn't give it much of a thought. 10MB is fine for what I do, I have a few work machines connecting via VPN and transferring smaller project files, hosting training sessions on web conferences... standard work from home type stuff really.
So for about 2 months after the tech left... I was BLOWN AWAY (even bragging to coworkers) by how awesome having fiber was, I would routinely get download speed nearly triple of what I was paying for... and the Upload was always around 2-4 MB...
-------------------------------------The Bad Stuff-----------------------------------
About a week ago, I started dropping from conference calls on VOIP, 2mb file transfer were taking a very very long time..... I decided to run speed tests.. now I am getting exactly 10mb down, and that's fine, because that is what I am paying for... However the upload was going at about .5 - .7 mb up.... oh wow, so I did a full power cycle of the equipment, etc etc... Test again, same result... OVER AND OVER AGAIN, same result....
I call centrylink, and I learn that their 10mb service, has an upload speed of .7 ... I could not believe it.. I mean, even with 2 bars on my 4g cell, i still get around 2mb upload speed. So I plead my case, explaining that they are the only option I have where I am located, and if this is not resolved... I could and eventually will loose my job. However, all of that fell on deaf ears.
After calling many people, trying to explain the situation... I mean, I work from home and I loose my job, I loose the house... simple as that. Finally they said they can offer me 20mb down service(after saying repeatedly they can't) and the upload speed is between 1 and 2mb....By this time, I have no options... I am ready to bend over and pay whatever it is they are going to charge... Turns out, they need to send a tech out... the time frame I was given was "On or after 9/4, between 8am-5pm"..... Instead of throwing my phone and cursing... I just agreed to the 35$ monthly increase, and the 60$ tech visit to upgrade my services to "bonded" even though.... the hardware already on site is more then capable of (and was previously) running those speeds.
------------------------------Summary------------------
Bottom line is this... I would have NOT bought my house where I did, if I knew that centrylink performs the way they do... They don't advertise their upload speed on their site, and I know why,because I received better upload speeds on my cellphone on a rainey day. I just dont understand WHY? Why invest in fiber, if your not going to offer the speeds people want. I just wanted to vent here as opposed to going to the attorney generals office like I originally had in my head.
I just went thru the Kansas city shuffle, it never ends well.

Any centurylink dsl issues in 55347 area ?
In the last week or two have there been any issues with centurylink dsl in the 55347 area ? This was formerly Qwest. I have been having some video streaming issues(Hulu+) and tests show packets dropped on upload and erratic download. Did they make any changes ? because my modem (C1000A) used to report 20-21Mbps down for capacity/connection-type and now it says 26Mbps download. Upload is the same.
Speaking of tests I generally uses myspeed.visualware.com but not sure how reliable it is. What is a good test out there that will give me more in depth details like packet retransmits, tcp delay etc..

Century Link Data-Cap
I was wondering if it was ever clarified whether or not Century Link enforces a data-cap? I use a traffic monitor that is built into my netgear router/modem and have been watching how much data I send/recieve.....
So far this month I have downloaded 547 GB and uploaded 21 GB..... I watch a lot of netflix and download a lot of games. I haven't had my service shut off or limited in anyway thus far....
Does anyone know if there is a cap and if there is, how much would one have to download to get capped?!?!?

[CenturyTel] zyxel pk5001z firmware upgrade and Android 4.1.2
Hi all,
I recently had my old modem only device replace with the above zyxel modem to attempt to resolve a constantly deteriorating line speed issue. Good news is that it seems to have stabilized but only time will tell.
Now the interesting problem the new modem/router caused was with my android phone. It would no longer "authenticate" even with no security. A quick google indicated that many routers were having this issue with 4.1.2 (or vice versa) and the only hope was a firmware upgrade. Luckily there was for this router. I upgraded and now it authenticates with actual wireless security enabled. The new firmware is CZP002-4.3.009.16
I'm posting this in hopes that it may help others out there who may have been vexed by this issue.
Now if only I could get some of that speed increase I'm reading about here... :)
cheers,

Internet slowing down at a specific time
Hello all!
For the past couple of days around 6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m my internet and my close relatives who live next to me is seeing slow speeds at this time. Usually what fixes it is a quick modem reboot and all is good.
Now normally, if that fix is simple enough i wouldnt mind, but i'm wondering what is causing this to happen at this specific time. I have called tech numerous times and all they tell me to do is reboot my modem. Well i know that this helps and usually fixes this, but i want to know what is causing this slow internet speed at these times.
My question is, Does anyone have a clue, or is this happening to anyone else? I live in Stephenville, Texas if that helps you all out any. Maybe other people where i live is having the same problems. Tech support hasnt told me anything or doesnt really have a clue.
Thanks

[CenturyTel] CenturyLink upgrades to my neighborhood
Hello everyone I live in the Rolling Green subdevision of SW Cedar Rapids, near westdale mall and 29th ave. For the past few weeks CenturyLink contractors have been working pulling fiber in the neighborhood, digging deep holes, and even breaking holes in the pavement unearthing old "ma bell" manhole covers.
Is there any way I can determine what upgrades they're putting in? The last time I had DSL was about 5 years ago, at that time I paid for 1.5 down but it would only connect at about 768k.
I'd like to get an idea of the packages that might become available and if it'd be economical to switch from my current provider (ImON)
Thx

Novice questions about new modem/router
For 6 years, I've had a NETGEAR-RangeMax WPN824, "802.11g w/MIMO" router, and an Embarq 660 Series modem.
I'm not sure what was happening, but previously when I would try to connect my media player to the network via a wireless bridge in my home entertainment setup, it would initially work, but then, almost randomly, other devices in the house would end up disconnecting. This would require a router reboot, after disconnecting the media player. It seemed like the router was perhaps maxed out on connected devices. But, frankly, I'm a novice and don't know how that works with regard to WiFi.
A few months ago, my modem was upgraded so I could get faster DSL speeds. (Previously I was maxed out at 5Mbps. With the new modem and subsequent service upgrade, I can now get 10Mbps.) The modem is a CenturyLink branded ZyXEL Model PK5001Z. It is a modem/wireless router. When it was installed, I told the installer to turn off the wireless function because I was happy with my current router. Everything worked fine with speeds that are consistently above 8Mbps and sometimes are actually 10+.
Last week, my NETGEAR router died. In the presence of the aforementioned scenario in which I had to reboot the router. When I rebooted it, the lights faintly flickered, and then it just died. So, I removed the router from the setup and turned on the wireless antenna on the ZyXEL. After connecting my devices to the new SSID, everything seems to work fine. I've also recently replaced my media player with a wifi antenna, and it has no problems connecting either. No disconnects from any devices.
Here is how my devices are connected:
Desktop PC 1 directly connected to the modem/router via Cat6
Desktop PC 2-->wifi
Laptop-->wifi
Laptop-->wifi
PS3-->wifi
XBox 360-->wifi
media player-->wifi
2 DVRs wired to a wireless bridge (D-LINK DAP-1522) in bridge mode.
Kindle Fire HD-->wifi
2 android phones-->wifi
So, after all that. Everything is working just fine. But I have a few questions:
1. Is the new ZyXEL an upgrade from the 6 year-old NETGEAR?
2. When I rest my mouse pointer over the connection animation on my laptops, it says 54Mbps. Is this a decent wireless LAN speed? I don't remember what the prior (NETGEAR) was providing.
3. It almost seemed like I killed my NETGEAR router by over taxing it with so many devices. Did I kill it, or was it just it's time and it was a coincidence? Can I be causing harm to my current modem/router (ZyXEL)?

[CenturyTel] westell g90 firmware update
i couldn't post a reply to a 2010 OP to this (mancer21) but wanted to say thanks and share what i so far have found.
i was given a zyxel pk5001z as a replacement for the 6100/ g90 westell. i begun having connection issues.
well, the zyxel took place of the linksys e2000 i had bridged also. however the zyxel doesn't have gigabit, but does have N-band wifi. yet it lacks the power of delegating chores when i've got it wound up, working.
so today i wanted to give the old setup another chance. i'll report back how the firmware agrees and possibly fixes the prior problem.
thanks again mancer21 for the find!

[Qwest] Google TV (Logitec Revue) doesn't work with Actiontec C1
Dear fellow Centurylink users,
I live in the Seattle area and recently got a Centurylink DSL internet service (40MBPS download). The modem/router combo that I am using is the Actiontec C1000A. I've a Logitec Revue (Google TV) device wired to this modem and on the other end, the Revue is connected to the TV. In a perfect world, it should work, but it's not. It used to work just fine when I had Comcast cable internet before that had a D-Link modem. The problem is as follows:
The Revue is getting the power (i can see the power LED glowing). The Revue is connected to my LCD TV (Samsung) through a HDMI port. I should be able to see signal from Revue as I switch to the right HDMI source, but it's not. I have already tried resetting the modem, resetting Revue to original setting and have changed to other HDMI ports, but without any success.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone faced similar problems in the past? Is there any workaround?
2. Should I change the modem/router combo and switch to separate modem and router set-up? Any recommendations on what modem should work?
3. What's the best way to determine the problem? I am fairly tech savvy and don't mind getting my hands dirty running some tests :-)
I would very much appreciate your help!
