Modem Retrains 50+ times a day

Hi, we just got centurylink service about a month ago, and everyday, the internet seems to be getting worse... I have called their 1-800 and they say something is sending a "disconnect" signal. They haven't told me what it is. They want to send a tech out, but there wont be anyone home, so they won't do the work. Do any of you know what is going on? I am currently running an ActionTec c1900a since CenturyLink only will help you if you use their modem. I usually use a Netgear D7000, and was having the same issues, if not worse. [CenturyTel] Interior wire affect VDSL speeds?

My service was advertised & sold to me as 60Mbps, although I have only ever gotten a (very reliable) 30Mbps-down and 3Mbps up and have been happy, thus I've never questioned the 60. But another thread here has me wondering: does the interior wiring from the entrance to the modem affect Speeds in any way? I don't know if this house is wired in a Star arrangement or Daisy-chained, but I think the modem connection uses just two wires out of the telephone cable, that I suspect is 18ga perhaps. Might my speeds improve if I simple double-up the wires already in the jacket?

Centurylink static IP

Hey all. I've been playing departmental tango trying to get a static IP set up for my centurylink account. It's a residential gigabit fiber account using the "simplepay" account type, whatever that means. Does anyone know who I'd actually talk to to set it up? I've been transferred to every department under the sun.

Somebody responded to a post that the max upload speed on DSL is ~ 877mb/s. Is this accurate for ALL DSL flavors? Not just on CL.

WiFi slower than expected

Just switched from Comcast to CenturyLink VDSL2 bonded. I have an Asus RT-AC68U router (stock firmware) that was connected to the cable modem. Comcast service was 55 down/5 up. Speed tests over wifi were showing 60-65 down and 6-7 up. Now I have the Asus taking care of PPPOE and connected to the Actiontec C1900A which is in bridge mode untagged (wifi is off). Speeds are supposed to be 80/10. Over ethernet I get 78-80 down and 9-10 up so I know I'm getting advertised speeds. However, when I connect via wifi and run a speed test I get anywhere from 25-60 down and 9-10 up. I would normally chalk this up to interference but Comcast was consistently showing advertised speeds over wifi. Plus the upload speeds over ethernet and wifi stay around 9-10 so I'd expect it to be lower if it was interference related. It's just the download speeds that are so far off. The only thing that has changed is the router handling PPPOE. Is this expected behavior or is there some way to get better speeds over wifi?

New 1GB service running at ~250/250 - told "As expected"

I just moved to a new house in Winter Park, FL 34787 and had a ONT installed and then the following day, the modem installed and activated. I pay for 1GB fiber. I ran 5 DSLReports speed tests: 259/208 14ms - Plugged into ONT with CAT-6 Cable #1 291/243 14ms - Plugged into ONT with CAT-6 Cable #1 221/223 18ms - Plugged into ONT with CAT-6 Cable #2 (to confirm it wasn't the cable) 195/139 20ms - Plugged into C3000A with CAT-6 Cable #2 246/249 19ms - 5G WiFi to C3000A Laptop ETH NIC: Intel I219-LM connected @1.0Gbps Laptop Wifi NIC: Qualcomm QCA61x4A 802.11.ac connected @1.3Gbps ONT 'level' 1310 - 17.42 (written on inside of ONT) Modem: Actiontec C3000A (rev 3B, CAD002-31.165L.4, 1000Mbps wan connection) I did this while the tech was here and he said this is to be expected, and that if I ran 4 speed tests at once, with 4 devices, I'd hit 1GB in total. This isn't what I expected, and I thought I would get at least 800/800 on one device. Can anyone chime in here? Short of calling for a tech to come check it, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Help getting Fiber

Good evening everyone! I moved to a brand new neighborhood about a year and a half ago. The whole community that I live at (except for my street for some odd reason) has gigabit fiber readily available, even as they were building houses on the other streets. When I moved, I was excited to order the service. I ordered the service online shortly after moving and my address shows that it qualifies for gigabit speed internet. About a week and some change later, the tech came through but informed me that it wasn't available on my street just yet. A few weeks later (towards the end of 2017) I saw some trucks roll through my street carrying a thick orange cable (I'm assuming it's the conduit?) and saw people placing orange flags and digging through people's yards. They got halfway through my street but for some reason stopped. I tried ordering service twice last year, however when the techs come out they still tell me that "it's coming" and that the fiber is only "two houses down". They did install a gray box on the side of my house (I'm also assuming it's the Optical Terminator) the last time they came through late last year though, which gives me some hope. Fast forward to Feb. 2019 and for some reason, they still haven't even made a dent to finishing rolling out the fiber, however all of the houses on my street have been finished being built a couple of months ago. I attached some pictures that I took back in April of 2018 that shows the equipment they have placed. The equipment has been sitting like this on my street for almost a year now, untouched. Is there someone that I can contact to see what's going on with the rollout and why it still hasn't been completed and possibly get an ETA? I appreciate any help that you guys can give me! I would love to take advantage of the $65 gig promotion they have going on right now.

Possible to get higher than advertised DSL speeds?

CenturyLink just completed installing VDSL equipment in my area, and their web site now advertises 40/2 (bonded) speeds at my location. If this really is the best speed available, then I don't want the service. Has anyone found CenturyLink willing to test their line for higher speeds, before committing to service and an installation fee? Or are the speeds on the website usually the final word? (I'm around 2000 ft. from the new DSLAM, on buried copper installed in 1979.)

Our router is overheating fairly often after a bit of research the router which was provided by centurylink has had many problems before with other customers revolving around the router over heating. the router is a c1100t, and probably going to replace it with a better model as often as ive been getting stuck with no internet the past 2 weeks ive been very irritated me and the account holder have talked about it on multiple occasions and ive gotten ahold of centurylink 3 times in the last two weeks wanting help to troubleshoot the issue then i looked up the router and noticed something this router dosnt have proper ventilation to maintain use throughout the day personally i think my grandma pays too much for internet when even being the only one on the internet i get a max download speed of 2mb/s on my pc which has a atheros 9000 series wifi adapter and new driver for said adapter so my question is what should i do about this and whats the best router centurylink provides as if i do call them again and tell them to replace a faulty modem/router id like to know whats the most reliable router centurylink can offer

CenturyLink DSL Modem for Montezuma County Colorado

Looking for CenturyLink modem purchase options. In a rural area with 10 mbps we may even get 20 mbps service some day. Want to set up a basic modem and bypass wi fi to use with our own router or a good combo modem router. What are the good basic modems for use with a separate router? And what are the good combo routers/ modems with 5 GHz with ac wi-fi? Looks like Actiontec C2300A, Technicolor C2100T, and ZyXEL C2100Z have 2.4 GHz b/g/n, 5 GHz n/ac. I'm not familiar with these companies so I'm not sure which brand is better. Option 1 Basic C'Link modem and good router with 5 Ghz ac (like the Asus's RT-AC86U) Option 2 Good combo modem/ router with 5 Ghz ac This is a C'Link DSL set up for Dolores area of Colorado a semi-rural area in Montezuma County. Small house with minimal crossover interference from neighbors.

[CenturyTel] Idle speculation on CL construction in my neighborhood?

How long will it take to set the new DSLAM, lay and light up the fiber? Living on an island, I've always been starved for bandwidth. This week I saw spools of cable and several trucks, flaggers, crews and ditchwitches in my neighborhood working along the road from my current DSLAM (8000' loop length estimated) up the hill toward my end of the island. The flagger confirmed that they are laying fiber in the ditch along the main road. I'd estimate that the route will be about 4000' of new cable as they are already toward the southern end of the island with little need to go further. I've always found that I had to call CL to get any service upgrades because they never market anything. Hence my question above: When should I start pestering CL for upgraded service? I'm on pair bonded 20 down 2 up and could use a boost on both directions. Thanks for reading.

Qwest/CenturyLink Caller ID and Security Screen - pros and cons

$

I've been ignoring the spam calls I get. I get my share to my landline. They usually hang up after 3-4 rings. On my Caller ID display, they mostly show OUT OF AREA or UNAVAILABLE whether the area code is local or not. Many do show a personal name or name of a business. Toll-free numbers as well. Sometimes they arrive before 9am, sometimes after 9pm. Everybody knows all of this, right? But now a few of them are ringing the full 8 rings it takes to reach my voicemail. More frequently this have been happening. Always a man with a foreign accent, something about me owing them 99 bucks, boiler room chatter in the background. It was when I had three of those voicemails within a 5 minute period is when I blew a head gasket. I had had enough. I dug out my info packet that Qwest sent me back in 2005 when I first got their Qwest Home Choice Plus (product grandfathered as of June 18, 2010; today CenturyLink offers Home Phone Unlimited which has a non-identical assortment of Custom Calling features) and I found out that all along I have had this feature available to me called Security Screen. Two levels Standard and Advanced. I read up on it and four days ago I activated the Advanced Setting. In four days I have had NOT ONE spam phone call. Well, except one Caller ID entry from ST OF TN, a government number in Tennessee, I checked. I wonder if govt numbers will get though. But, other than that, no more spam calls like described above. My house is quiet! This is great! It would be perfect except for one thing. The Caller ID. When Security Screen is turned off, like it has been all of these years, if a call came in from a landline, I would see the callers name and number (Smith John 206-nnn-nnnn). That was great. If they called from a cell phone, I would see their city and state and the number (Seattle WA 206-nnn-nnnn). That was only okay. With Security Screen set on Advanced, each caller hears this message: "The party you are calling does not accept unidentified calls. If you are a solicitor, please hang up now. Otherwise, please enter your 10-digit telephone number." They would enter their number and the call would arrive to me. However, I have found that Caller ID displays differently when Security Screen is turned on (SS=ON). I have called up several intra-lata friends and had them call me from their landlines and their cell phones. Here's what I can say with Security Screen ON: 1) From every landline, Caller ID displays "SECURITY SCREEN 206-nnn-nnnn". 2) From every cell phone except one, it displays the same as when SS=OFF: city and state plus their number (for example, EVERETT WA 425-nnn-nnnn). As if they "bypassed" the Security Screen. 3) My cellphone callers who bypassed the Security Screen were using AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. They each geographically reside within the same area code as their cellphone numbers (The AT&T, TMOB and VZN live in 206. One TMOB lives in 425.) My phone number is 206. 4) The one cell phone caller who encountered the Security Screen was also Verizon but geographically resided in a different area code (425) than his cell number (206). If that made for the difference than the other Verizon 206 caller, I do not know. Anyway, now NOBODY's names show up. Crap, I don't want to memorize whose landline phone numbers are whose! I mean, that's why I have caller ID! I found online a CL info flyer for Security Screen: https://www.centurylink.com/asset/home/help/user-guides/SecurityScreenAdv_en.pdf You will note it pictorially shows the Caller ID would display either the words (*SECURITY SCREEN) or will display the caller's name with as asterisk next to it to signify it was a screened call (*John Sample). You will also notice which one you get is explained there as follows: "If the Caller ID system can identify a coordinating name for the number the caller entered, the display will show it with an asterisk (*); otherwise, you will see “Security Screen” on the display." Well, as far as I'm concerned, the Caller ID system with SS=OFF had no problem identifying a coordinating name, so why can't it do the same with SS=ON? I note they did not word it as an identification performed by Security Screen but as a identification performed by the Caller ID system. Today, I called CenturyLink Repair and asked them WHY can't I have the name show up? What is the reason that I can't have this? I explained that this Security Screen would be an awesome solution to spam calls except now I would have to memorize numbers or else seek a different solution, and I have this spam problem to resolve. He asked his nearby Upper Tier who said that it is standard to see SECURITY SCREEN. I replied ok, but my question is WHY can't I have the asterisked name when your flyer shows that I can have it? I asked as well, who therefore are the customers who get the asterisked name and why can't I be one of them when we already know that I do get the name when SS=OFF? I chose to nicely apologize if I was somehow annoying him by pressing for this but can he go back to his Upper Tier as I think that person doesn't know what I know. He checked with his Upper Tier again, came back and said my Security Screen is functioning normally, etc. and gave me the same type of words as before, pretty much a go-away-and-don't-make-us-have-to-spend-time-on-this response. I asked him if he can refer me to a Marketing person? He didn't have any contacts (I knew he wouldn't, I know the drill.) Again I apologetically asked if there is anyone who can help me because I have this spam problem. He offered to open a ticket which he did. I asked him what was typical turn around time and he said 24 hours. I didn't make him read to me what he typed on the ticket but I have a fear that I may get a call to my voicemail from someone who again completely misses my question but closes the ticket. Pessimistically, I know the drill. I found this comment elsewhere on this forum and it supports my position, that my local company has the caller's name to give to me whether SS is On or Off: "Caller ID (CID) has two components, a phone number and a name (referred to as CNAM). What most people don't know is that both pieces of this information are not sent together from the originating carrier. The originating carrier only sends the CID phone number to the receiving carrier. They do not send the CNAM info. It's up to the receiving carrier to add the CNAM info to the CID data stream just before it's delivered to your phone. Most of the larger telcos (carriers) maintain their own CNAM database servers which are routinely updated. Some smaller carriers contract with another party to provide the CNAM database service for them." So, I'm waiting on CenturyLink's ticketed response. By the way, I tested with my friends the 4-digit Privileged Caller Code mentioned in that flyer. Once they encounter the Security Screen message and enter the code, they hear "Thank you" and it rings through to me but, no matter who places the call to me, for all such calls my Caller ID shows the same message, "PRIVILEGED CALL 000-000-0000". Yes, all zeroes. So, if you give out this PCC to more than one person, you will never know which person is using it! Makes it even less valuable than if they did not use the PCC. Oh sure, you save your caller from pressing 6 more digits but look what you lose as the called party! Now, let's think about that. Since the calling party does NOT provide their 10-digit number, the receiving carrier cannot match it to a CNAM so of course they could not display a name and of course their Security Screen program had no 10-digit number to fowrd to my Caller ID display. That would explain the resulting "PRIVILEGED CALL 000-000-0000". This also suggests to me that it is somewhere within the actual program of the Security Screen feature, and in spite of their wording of their flyer it is not within the actual program of the Caller ID feature, where an opportunity to take the caller-entered 10-digit number then retrieve its CNAM could have been performed but was not programmed to do so. Hence, I get "SECURITY SCREEN" every time with landline callers. That could explain what is happening but I do don't really know and don't want to excuse CL from providing me an answer. More detail on Security Screen is found here: https://www.centurylink.com/wholesale/clecs/features/security_screen.html If anyone reading this has the facts of why I cannot have the CNAM with SS=ON, I appreciate your input. But, I will hope you also can explain what are the circumstances where customers DO receive the asterisked name as pictorially shown in that CL flyer. My Local Serving Office is 5ES. Maybe someone can separately explain why cell phone callers bypass the Security Screen except for my one friend. Yeah, I know, I need a life. But, once I got mad at the spam, I got tenacious. Thank you.

So we switched to a bonded connection a little while back and we haven't been getting our full speed (80/10) - CenturyLink's been no help. I was wondering if you folks had any idea of how to solve my dilemma or if I'm straight out of luck. Here's what our modem says: (Zyxel C300Z) [att=1] and here's what I'm getting: [att=2] You'll notice I'm getting only half the download, of the bonded pair, but I'm getting the full upload. I'm not sure what's causing this, I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps I can think of. Any thoughts?

I talked to a group of techs today they are working on fixing copper that was chewed up by mice. I asked him when CenturyLink was going to upgrade to fiber. They said never as long as CenturyLink owns it the best you can hope for is to have CenturyLink sell it to somebody else that is willing to pay money to upgrade it. As far as they are concerned they can just let it rot. We had 1400 DSL lines last year now we're down to 700 people are cancelling left and right and going to Cox. I wonder how many markets are like this one where they refused upgrade lines.

[CenturyTel] Technicolor C2100T on Single Pair DSL

Trying to future proof a new DSL install for a friend. Only possible to get a single pair 25/2 VDSL2 DSL circuit at the present time. Slightly over 3000 Ft from the DSLAM. CenturyLink can not or will not install bonding for some reason. Will this Technicolor C2100t modem work fine on a single pair until a bonded connection is possible??? Working with Simple Pay and it is extremely difficult to talk to anybody that has a clue as to Bonded Service. I am trying to help a friend from hundreds of miles away. I have hopes of getting this modem to work on the single pair 25/2 and later upgrading to bonding. Eventually I will get to his area and find a local CenturyLink technician and pry info from him/her. Phone calls to Centurylink Care or trying to chat is a disaster. 25/2 or 10/1 is the only thing they will sell but they do not have a good reason why. This is in Blackstone, Va for anybody that may be familiar with that area. To make the pain worse, Simple Pay 25/2 is 55 dollars in Blackstone and 45 dollars other places.
