Phone, but no internet at a new rental.

Hello, We are moving into a duplex and I chatted with a CenturyLink rep. The address is new, so its not showing up on CenturyLink's "check availability" page or Google, but the rep mentioned they were able find the other unit is getting phone service. She mentioned that a tech put a note that phone was a available, but no internet. I checked the addresses around me (not on the same street, but very close) and high speed internet is available on CenturyLink's website. Question, If the phone is connected and working, how much effort is it to get internet working? Is it possible for me to put a request in to enable the terminal to get internet? This is what they chatted to me: "Our internet is DSL so it comes through the phone line but if it isn't available from the terminal, then there isn't a way to extend it. It looks like the tech went out and did validate the address but put in that internet is unavailable" Thank you for reading this.

Help!

Hey I just had century link fiber line installed. I paid for the 1 gig service. My average speeds is 600 down with 700 up. It does bottom out to 500down-600up occasionally. I was wondering should I be concerned with this and complain or is this normal. Also the equipment they set up was a ONT to a Actiontec C3000a modem, is this adaquit or should I consider getting my own modem. Thanks for any help.

Possible to get higher than advertised DSL speeds?

CenturyLink just completed installing VDSL equipment in my area, and their web site now advertises 40/2 (bonded) speeds at my location. If this really is the best speed available, then I don't want the service. Has anyone found CenturyLink willing to test their line for higher speeds, before committing to service and an installation fee? Or are the speeds on the website usually the final word? (I'm around 2000 ft. from the new DSLAM, on buried copper installed in 1979.)

[Qwest] overprovisioning - retrain at 3am last two nights

Hey all, The DSL gods have shined on me. The last two nights, my modem(s) have retrained at about 3am or so. They are now training at the max upstream rate and close to 90-95% of the max downstream rate. Is this typical of the Assia "overprovisioning" or is this a test that they are doing just to learn/find the max rate of the loops attached to our DSLAM? What is really slick is I have pair bonded 40/2 and I am now training at about 48/2.25 or so. I'll take a 10% speed bump any time! Do y'all think this will be permanent or is this just temporary? With over-provisioning, is it common to have nightly retrains? thanks.

Time to stop paying $10 a month for a leased modem. The Technicolor C2000T is on the approved list and can be purchased used or refurbished for about $50. We're on a 40 mbps plan, DSL. Thoughts? https://bitsfrombytes.com/best-modem-for-centurylink/#2

New CL area

I am currently in a COX neighborhood and have had them for well over 20 years (Internet, their TV service sucks). I am having a new home built and Cox offers DOCSIS 3.1. I am really wanting 1gig up and down. Looks like CL has FTTH with 1 gig up and down service. I am doing research as i am serious thinking of switching to CL. How is everyone's experiences with CL fiber? It looks like i am forced to buy their "modem" and router. Is it possible for me to not use this and use my own Ubiquity Edge Router for service? I seem to be getting different answers to this question. Would it be recommended to go with CL over Cox? Cox is $165 for 3.1 Gigablast and unlimited data. CL looks like its only $65 for gig fiber and i don't see any info on a cap, is this true there is no cap on CL?

[CenturyTel] New 500/500 Plan Offered

Just noticed today CL is now offering a 500/500 plan at my apartment in Seattle. This had to have launched just in the past week. So now I can get: 1Gig - $79.95 500/500 - $69.95 100/50 - $64.95 40/5 - $39.95 That pricing is silly, in my opinion. $5 difference between 100/50 and 500/500?

CL fraudulently claiming 10/1 speeds in my CAF II block, for 3 yrs

So I've always been puzzled by the FCC broadband map and the speeds listed in my census block. I've only now realized that these are self reported speeds by the telecos in a FCC Form 477, which seems to be regularly updated with the last public one coming from July 2017. CL never reported what they offered in my area until they got CAF II money in 2015, even though I've had the same internet with them since 2010 and before. After they signed up for CAF II they labeled my block as receiving 11/0.896 in both the Dec 2015 v1 and Dec 2015 v2 Form. For Jun 2016 v2 they claimed 10/0.768. Finally in the July2017v1, they claim 10/1 is available in my census block as shown in the provided picture. Have to wonder what the upcoming Form will have me listed under. (I have blurred the map but the purple area is my census block which allegedly someone gets 10/1.) [att=1]Each dot represents an address. When entering grey addresses, it told me to call them. I guess to maybe get sub-1.5Mbit speeds. Now I do know that the FCC claims that stated speeds in a census block might not be provided to the entire block, but it's pretty obvious that they don't offer 10/1 to any of my census block. But have to decided to claim they do for the past 3 years. To prove this to myself I entered my neighbors addresses into CL's own internet availability tool. Seems like they stop offering 10Mbit at the city limits, yet they tell the FCC differently. I quickly looked over my neighboring census block and CL seems to be lying over there too. My current modem stats [att=2] https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/#/ https://www.fcc.gov/general/broadband-deployment-data-fcc-form-477 http://news.centurylink.com/2015-08-27-CenturyLink-to-bring-broadband-to-1-2-million-rural-households-in-33-states

[CenturyTel] WAN IP address lease period unknown

Hello everyone, A similar thread is not postable because it's been over 400 days. Anyway, someone commented in that thread they thought the lease period was 1 hour. I've had the same WAN IP address for several days and it hasn't changed. Does anyone know if there is a normal period of time where those change? It can't be just one hour...I don't remember that ever being the case. I created a batch file (if anyone is interested) which Task Scheduler runs every 5 minutes and directs the result to a log file. At this point it's nearly 4 days and 6 hours with no WAN IP address change yet. Thanks!

[CenturyTel] Modem Purchase Recommendation Please

New to CenturyTel, line activated yesterday. I was told 25 Meg max in my area and the sent me a C1100T. It is now set up in bridge mode with my TP-Link Archer C7 as the router. I intend to buy my own modem now that I know everything works OK and would like recommendations. Is there any benefit to buying a more expensive refurb, say a C2100T, if I will only be using it in bridge mode anyway? Naturally, there is a benefit if they ever upgrade but I don't see any indications of them upgrading anytime soon. All available equipment seems to be modem/routers. Which model has the best modem? As an aside, they told me the best speed I could get was 25 Meg and I do get it. They told me the line would be ready after 5 PM yesterday but I noticed the DSL light was green mid morning so I set it up. First couple of speed tests came booming in at 40 Meg. Needless to say, I was surprised. I started surfing around and soon saw the screen flash and a message about "network change". Weird. Checked speed test again and only 25 Meg. Huh. Did they lie? Why would they?

Upgrading to 40 meg...

I own a Zyxel c1100z modem, which is an approved Clink modem per their "Approved modem list". I am on 20 meg svc now. I tried to upgrade to 40 meg, and they said I need a new modem and a tech has to come out for $99... To do what? And why would I need a new modem? I bought this because it was on their approved list...

Speed difference between address with service vs address without

A new DSLAM as just installed in front of my house. I was checking speeds on the Centurylink website and saw that an address without DSL service can now signup for 80/20 but an address with current DSL service can only get 6/1. The addresses are right next to each other and on the same side of the new DSLAM. The current DSL service is connected about 8,000 feet away to an old DSLAM. It looks like the address without DSL service would be connected to the new DSLAM. Is there a way to get the 80/20 if you currently have service? If I were to cancel my service and then signup again do you think it would then let me signup for the 80/20? I know a suggestion will be to call Centurylink but they, as usual, do not have a clue how to do this.

[Qwest] New service at new address

$

I'm moving to a new address in a former US West/Qwest area. Last time we moved, the family member whose name the bill is in insisted on moving service. That was a nightmare, including being without home internet for almost a month because CenturyLink claimed no technicians were available to move service on a self-install connection. So, this time around we've decided to set up service under my name, that way they see it as a new customer install. We've had CL since late 2013 so I'm familiar with the service, just not the billing and account management. The new address has several online options; either 20 or 40 mbps where self-install is available or 60 mbps under a claim it's fiber and would require a $99 tech install (thank you but no thank you). So I'll be going for 40 mbps, due to some vague online special every option is $45/mo. plus the usual unspecified taxes. So my questions are: 1. Is changing whose name the service is being billed under a good idea? 2. Will this get us a faster install than moving service? 3. For over a year we've owned our own modem (second-hand C2000T). Will CL try to insist I buy or rent one from them even though their own documentation says the one we have will work with those speeds? 4. Any way of finding out what the upstream would be under the three options? Just curious. 5. Will CL try to steer or require me to sign up for their postpaid service, or can I sign up for the advertised prepaid service as I place the order? 6. (Optional) Is there a way to get an actual land-line number from them without having to bundle their $40+taxes "package" I don't need? Or would that push the order to postpaid? I know POTS isn't more secure or less expensive than a cell phone, just somewhat interested in finding out if I can get a non-cell, non-VOIP number for in-city personal business.

Question about 60mbps DSL wire

I want to replace/upgrade the old phone wire that supplies DSL to my modem/router and I can't find info on how these terminals open and accept the wires. I would like to wire directly to this terminal.. or do I HAVE to use Scotchlock splices? As far as I know this DSL uses 2 pairs. Is that correct? I am using CAT6 as phone line. *We dont have telephone, just 60mbps DSL service* The green and red wires look easy. Thanks in advance

[Embarq] VDSL or ADSL2+

I live in northern Indiana. Contractors recently have been updating the the internet down the road from my residence. They installed a new cabinet and installed what might be called a mini dslam closer to my house. I have had 10 Mb ADSL2+ for several years. I asked one of the contractors a few months ago what they were doing and he just said that they were improving the line so I would have faster internet. I asked if it was going to vdsl and he said that he didn't have that answer. The project was completed a couple of months ago. The website still shows my fastest speed at 10Mb. Is there a possibility that my area could go to vdsl? It seems like my pings are a little faster but I see no other difference.
