Zyxel C1100Z, and two old PK5001z, all three same issue?

I've got a somewhat new for us from the tech who helped modem. The modem is a Zyxel c1100Z, ment for out 25MB line. It works, no real issues until a couple days have passed or when its decided to throw a fit. The issue also occurred on a few older models we had when we only got 10MB DSL. The issue in as best as I can describe, is that after a while any and all NEW traffic will be blocked and receive a bad DNS error. Traffic that is still ongoing when this occurs, can continue to function normally. For example, I'm streaming a video and it has 30mins left to buffer. This video will continue to download, no issues. If I try to say, watch a new video, or go back a page which needs to be refreshed I will get a "Failed to load page, Check DNS" kinda error. I can continue to talk on VOIP apps when it occurs as long as I don't disconnect. To remedy this issue, I always have to power cycle it till the next time it happens and it will. The techs at Centry have no idea whats going on, they just keep saying to buy their new modems on a lease. (Their own tech gave us this out of an unopened box). This issue has also happened on 2 other Zyxels, PK5001z. I think it strange all three would do the same thing. I have updated the firmware, made sure its not overheating. When the tech last came out, they had fixed an open box outside that had been grounding the line. When they fixed that, the 10MB PK5001 seemed to work for an entire week with no issue. So maybe there is still some kinda grounding going on that's causing the modem to trip itself? I have no clue. I have access to the modems GUI, so if you need information to help me then I will gladly provide it. Any and all help is appreciated as I would like to stop having to power cycle this every other day just to use the net.

[Prism TV] Just Added Prism TV to my Gigabit ON Account

Took the plunge and finally added Prism TV to my account today here in Seattle based on some feedback I've been reading regarding some fairly awesome PQ. I've literally tried out all of the OTT offerings except for PS Vue (Fubo, DirecTV Now, Hulu, Sling) - and there's still way to many bugs in my opinion. With Prism, i'll also finally get Root Sports NW so I can watch my Mariners in a few months. Picked up the Preferred package w/ Showtime and Starz for $69. It stated I'll receive a self-install box in a few days with the STB. Crossing my fingers this is as easy to set up as I'm told. LOL. Check back in a few days.

[Qwest] Secondary spam filtering for trouble-prone grandfather

$

Centurylink's spam filter seems to be getting worse all the time as everything from bank statements to "free $100 gift cards" winds up in both my inbox and my grandfather's with a score of 0. This is a problem as he falls for stuff extremely easily, almost spending $700 on the gift cards for one of those "Hi its {Nephew's actual name here} I got caught by the police" scams...twice. We already have a secondary account with Outlook.com that does a far better job at filtering, but he needs the main CL one for personal stuff. I have already tried IMAP links on his Outlook account, which fixes the problem when he logs in there, but not CL itself remains the same and he prefers them. Looking for something to maybe scan the inbox and adjust subjects to SPAM or SUSPICIOUS the way GData used to do before they went client only (i.e. you must download the email into outlook where it will be displayed differently).

In the center of town and CenturyLink only offers 25/2??

I am close to the center of a Texas town, a block from a US highway and business corridor, and we are only offered 25/2 service; the speed tests are similar and show 26.2/2.1. I run a business where we have to stream video, and 2.1 is not sufficient to do anything but basic 480p video. We opted to rent the modem to try to get the correct line technology; it's an Actiontec C1000A VDSL2. I assumed since it's a VDSL2 modem there were bonded or symmetric plans they could offer us, but when I called CenturyLink they basically shrugged and said 25/2 is all we can get, and there are no options except to bring fiber in ($400/month). I am currently looking at dropping CenturyLink and trying Zito cablemodem service, which offers 100/10, and is more than enough. QUESTION #1: Is there any way we can bring in bonded or symmetric service here in Palestine TX, zip 75803 on CenturyLink? QUESTION #2: I was also surprised to see there is not an official CenturyLink assistance forum on this website like AT&T and Windstream offer for solving problems. Are there any higher tier officials here who can advise? We're basically behind a strip of businesses and close to a DSLAM and I cannot believe they won't even offer us pair bonding.

[Qwest] Technicolor C2000T & Linksys WRT 3200ACM bridge mode

First thing's first: What is Centurylink doing asking for account information over a non-secure connection??? Have I been scammed? The person I was talking with had no record of my account on the bill I was mailed (which was different than the one I remember having before). Honestly the cluster**** that is centurylink just blows my mind. I'm a centurylink customer somtimes and a qwest customer othertimes it's like someone who knows less than I do about networking (which isn't a whole heck of a lot) designed the entire infrastructure on a napkin one day and decided to go with it. Anyway: https://i.imgur.com/kPdCZpu.png Anyway: I've been lurking a bit but no one seems to quite have my problem...Everything was working just fine until I got an upgrade last week or so. First off my gear: Modem: Technicolor C2000T (bonded DSL 80mbps) Router: Linksys WRT 3200ACM DHCP/DNS: Pihole running on Ubuntu 16.04 My Centurylink Technicolor C2000T modem/router/switch combo which I DO NOT want functioning as anything other than my connection to the outside world (ie a modem) will not bridge with my router. I have tried literally everything imaginable to get this working but to no avail. There are a few things that just don't seem to get answered as I was doing my research. On the Modem/Router/Switch combo units (like the C2000T) there is no mention what ports should be connected FROM THE MODEM to the router. To the router is easy the wan port (Internet in Linksys' case) but I don't know if I should be physically connecting the ethernet cable from the WAN/LAN port to the router or one of the 4 yellow switch ports to the router. In the router should I be passing PPPoE credentials since the modem is self authenticating? If so what mode should I be using? By default this is Automatic configuration - DHCP. Under the Modem I'm getting some bizarre options that don't seem to match up with anything the centurylink tech had seen. I cannot for the life of me figure out what bridged mode I should be connecting with (tagged or untagged). I do have a dumb switch on the network but I have intentionally not been using it until I can get a solid bridging. but what are the numbers at the end of my briding options and why is there no mention of that anywhere else online? https://i.imgur.com/tnCNbcV.png Jesus that was a mess.

new modem can't get solid green DSL light

Hello. Attempting to replace leased ZyXEL C2100Z with purchased Actiontec C1000A, and can't get solid DSL green light. I noticed in specs that Actiontec doesn't support GPON or Bonded, while the ZqXEL does: GPON 1Gb Bonded 25Mbps ADSL2+, 100Mbps VDSL2. Could this be my problem? With ZyXEL I'm getting 25 Mb down regularly. thanks in advance

Talktous no longer responding

Hello again, ***Please read first. I have no intentions on upsetting anyone and I really don't enjoy writing this as I have other things to do. This is not meant to allow others to bash centurylink. your problem with centurylink are yours. I have posted this to have public record of progress with issues that can no longer be resolved through the chains given to me as a customer. I would rather do this before involving any service commission that would not be beneficial to anyone.*** The issues we have had over the years have usually been resolved after an email to talktous@centurylink.com (or mostly IHD Escalations people, who now say I have the wrong department). After spending hours on the phone with tech support to check if my modem is plugged in to the wall or resetting all factory defaults and trying this or that setting, I started emailing issues with speed tests logged. That was what now seems to be the good old days. Since back in late 2014 our connection is at its best 2mbps down(I got excited when we reached 5 down with latency of 113 once), with latency being 200+. Upload speeds seem to be close to the norm at .40-.70. I sent an email to Talktous@centurylink.com on the 13th of July and have had no response. The last few interactions let me know how much of a miracle it is to have 10Mbps here. I've also been told of the known bottleneck in Basile, La. My normal download speed at 5:30AM is .9*Mbps. Trying to check into work after hours is impossible. A lot of the time I can't load centurylink.com without finding something to do while waiting. Just in case anyone is wondering, yes, I have unplugged everything but my pc to test speeds. I was also born the day before yesterday and not quite yesterday. I now have a fresh OS install on this pc. I also check with my work laptop directly connected while trying not to drive 40 Min. away to the office when the issue could be addressed without leaving my family at 2AM. This connection used to be fixed promptly when we could work together on it. I wish I could say the same is still true. So, have you guys just given up? Is my only option to cancel service because this feat of 10Mbps is unobtainable? Why cant someone just tell me this instead of taking my $80 per month? Is it possible to provide you guys with direct burial cat6 to replace a bad line? A trencher isn't that hard to obtain, so could I provide one and you guys rerun a line? I could also provide access to the easement and get dottie out, get a schedule and take off of work to allow for the pull. Are there some power issues somewhere that we could address with engineered solar backup banks? I'm willing to put up some personal capital in this to help provide what I've been paying for. I would really appreciate some sort of thought. When this connection works correctly it allows me to spend more time at home. Not much more, but enough to find it important. EDIT*** I updated my profile to reflect that I no longer live in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Currently live in Reeves, Louisiana. Just would like to be as up front as possible.

So I am new to CL and only get 3mbps

I am new to CenturyLink and switched from Cox because of the consistent outages we have been getting in our area, and nothing was being done about it. After years and years of frustration, I figured at this point, slow internet was better than no internet. Sure Cox bill credits you for outages, but having no internet sucks even more when you're trying to run smart home devices. That being said, the fastest they offer our area is 3mbps! There is a huge CL building down the road, and I am new to DSL, and don't know all of the terminology and what to look for as to why they only offer 3mbps in our community, when the community up the road has 140mbps. I know that they have been trying to push fiber to more markets especially here in Phoenix, and I got the notification saying that it will soon be available in my area, which is why I made the switch to begin with. I do have to admit, though slow, it is much more reliable than what Cox had given me, which I expected about 3-4 outages a day. My setup is as follows, I have a CL provided modem, placed in transparent mode, and an Apple AirPort router that is actually providing the connection and routing, I have inputted all the correct settings for PPoE info into the Apple router, and its working great. I am surprised that Netflix and video streaming actually works over 3mbps, but it does take a bit of patience at the beginning. The fastest speed Cox was able to offer in my area was 14mbps, despite advertising gigablast, etc, and thats with brand new modems and equipment, when it did work, so I had to choose between slow internet and slower internet, which really sucks for this area of town. Also, Cox has no gigablast plans for our area, but CL has placed notices saying that fiber is coming. How does CL fiber work compared to Cox for those who have it?

[CenturyTel] New CL service, modem suggestions

Getting service in Las Vegas, 80mbs up/down, with the ability to go to 100 if I want. Fiber is also coming, but no ETA yet. What modem would be best to future proof myself? Not a fan of leasing a modem, especially since I have been with my current provider over 5-years (bought that one also). Wireless is not that important, have a standalone Cisco AP here somewhere, but the ability to handle the 80/100mbs and possible fiber in future, any suggestions? Also would upgrading the wiring on the xDSL line into the house from CAT3 to CAT5 worth the time?

Unable to connect to certain websites with Zyxel C1100z

I have CenturyLink service. Although download speeds are not as good as our previous provider, we had enough bandwidth for our needs - including streaming online from Netflix, Amazon Prime, SlingTV and so on. However, earlier this week sometime I noticed: a) None of our streaming devices (Nvidia Shield TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku - all connected using Ethernet) are able to stream from Netflix anymore. They all give error NW-2-5. I am also not able to stream Netlfix using my Android (OnePlus one) phone. b) I AM able to connect / login and stream from Netflix to 1) a PC through a browser or the Windows 10 Netflix app 2) couple of iPad minis we have in the house 3) Windows Phone Netflix App. c) However, if I run a tracert command in a command prompt (with Admin privileges) on the same PC that can stream Netflix through a browser, all Requests time out. d) I should note that few days before this started happening, I put the CenturyLink Zyxel C1100z modem in Transparent Bridge mode and connected it to my Asus RT-N56u router. I read through http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30993024-Working-with-ZyXel-C1100Z-modem-bridge-transparent-mode and http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30794998-Setting-the-ZyXEL-C1100Z-into-bridge-mode to make sure I was following the right steps. I should ALSO note that for troubleshooting this issue, I disconnected ALL computers and devices on our network, took an old laptop that had been turned off for several days, Reset the C1100z to get it out of Transparent Bridge mode and connected only the laptop to the C1100z using Ethernet. I was again able to get online but traceroute command again resulted in Request Time out. I also rebooted my Android Phone and connected wirelessly to the C1100z with same results (i.e. able to stream Amazon Video etc but not Netflix). e) Other "oddities" I have noticed - I am unable to VPN into my work using the app on my phone like I used to be able to do previously. Moreover, if I click on links in emails from say newegg, Frys or whatever, it does NOT open the webpage in the browser either. Other things I have tried - a) On my Android phone, go to Settings -> Apps -> Netflix and clear all Data and Cache information stored and then try to relogin but no cigar. b) Each of the streaming devices have also been reboot several times and I have confirmed their IP address assignments in the Asus RT-N56 router is consistent with what the device is showing. c) I have also changed the DNS servers settings in the Asus RT-N56u to point to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 servers. There are probably a few other things I have tried over the last 3-4 days that I am probably not recalling but hopefully above might enough info for someone to suggest what could be going on and if there might be some setting I may have missed somewhere or next steps? P.S. Not sure if this matters but we did pickup 9+ inches of snow in our neighborhood a day or two before (some) Internet services stopped working - not sure if that could have damaged any routing equipment but just mentioning in case it might help. Thanks in advance for any input and help, Topper

Small Business vs Residential 1Gbps

Does anyone know the difference between the small business and residential 1Gbps services? All I can get from the sales reps is that they both use GPON, but the Small Business 1Gbps line has better support and office 365.. which, as you might agree, is not worth $175 extra per month. One sales rep implied I could connect fiber directly into my modem (USG-XG-8) with small business line, but if its GPON, then that's wrong. Any insight? Better contention ratio? Do I basically get a dedicated GPON line? Do they guarantee 1Gbps vs sharing the GPON with 32 people etc..?

PPPOE Security

I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to request a longer PPPOE password on Centurylink GPON? From what I understand with GPON is that anyone with a connection to the fiber tap can read the data (though it is encrypted) the password they gave me is relatively small and can be brute-forced in hours so I would like a longer password.

CenturyLink Fiber - Is the provided modem required?

Backstory: 2 months ago we wired our house with ethernet and set up some Ubiquiti hardware (EdgeRouter Pro + EdgeSwitch). I supplied the router with the PPPoE credentials and tagged VLAN 201 as required. It has all been working great. Now, last Thursday (what a great Thanksgiving gift) internet stopped working at 1:00 PM. Checking the router logs it looks like the ONT may have failed because there were "Timeout waiting for PADO packet" messages. I called CenturyLink and they couldn't access the ONT remotely to reboot it so they scheduled a technician for Monday. That's 5 days without service. Now the tech comes out and replaces the card in the ONT which he says failed and the line tested good to him. The tech said that this is going to happen every so often to me because I don't use the provided modem/router. He said that their system routinely checks for supported modems and "bans" the non-supported? He also noted that if it happens too often then service will just be shut off. His recommendation was to buy the $100 modem and put it into bridge mode in front of my EdgeRouter. Is this true or is this just a case of the ONT failing and the tech not knowing what he's talking about?
