I am curious how these numbers look. The tech that did the hook up told me invest in a new dual band router which would allow for stonger signal since I am using WiFi cards in my computer.

Billed for nonexistent DirecTV service
My sister recently established new service from CenturyLink for Internet only. Her first bill contains $100+ charges for DirecTV. She has never had DirecTV and doesn’t have TV service from anyone.
The two companies are pointing fingers at each other for how to resolve this. I’m at a loss to explain this one, any tips for getting this resolved?

[CenturyTel] I actually feel sorry for this company!
Well, I wrote about 1/2 a chapter about my attempt to get service to my address but then re-read it before I submitted it and after reading it I kind of felt like the guy making fun the retarded guy (Challenged person). I just hung my head and said to myself "well he sure tried" I truly-truly feel so sorry for the people that have to subscribe to this company, I have never written anything bad about a company but just don't get how this company is still in business? it is so polluted at every level that I had to engage with that I can only wish the best for every single employee and hope that they realize the are worth so much more and can do so much better than work for such a dysfunctional company.
Customers, you too need to think about your life choices and evaluate if even having this service is worth your sanity (even the people without a choice) How can you even stay as a customer and feel good about yourself REALLY?
I am in severe shock.
DSLReports thank you for allow me a place to vent!
I do have to say I was warned by more that 10 - 12 people that considering them for service is not a good idea but I just could not grasp that it could be this broken!
I just put in an order for 1 meg down and no upload possible through the "North Korean People's Telephone And Glory Be To Kim Jong Inventor Of The Internet and Beautiful Glory Of Korea" company. AKA the "nkptagtkjotiabgok".
as a bonus they said I could pay by working in the fields for 15 hours a day or get a free Centurylink $50.00 Gift Card bet you know which one I took!
Wish I would have known about this "nkptagtkjotiabgok" company before I tried CenturyStink!
Respectfully submitted,

some TLS connections now hang with Draytek Vigor 2860
Been using a Draytek Vigor 2860 for a couple of years, no issues.
Starting last week, some sites are not reachable (mostly) For example, going to www.verizonwireless.com hangs on either ss73.vzw.com or
scache2.vzw.com. Other sites that hang are www.nvidia.com and www.sciencedaily.com. Not all https:// bits hang, just some. Most others
are fine. The strange thing is that, sometimes they do work, but most of the time they do not. Sometimes they will fail for a while and
then magically start working.
It's definitely not the computer(s), as any computer hooked to the Draytek exhibits the same issues.
I have a backup Draytek, just in case the main one failed in some way. Took it out of the box and it fails on these web sites as well.
Here's the odd bit. If I take an old D-link (I used it for years but stopped when they stopped updating the firmware) and use it, everything
is fine.
I'm a bit stumped. The Drayteks have not changed, so I want to say its the network, but the D-link works.
Thanks for any clues.
Cheers,

went to a town meeting and found how corrupt cl is
i went my local town meeting. where not a small city but still. anyway i go up and ask them about cl poor service . they have talk to them(cl) and cl told them back it would cost the city $ 700,000 to have faster speed. speed anything more then 10mb and stable. what funny and utter corrupt as hell. is that most of the cost for them to fix/upgrade is . guess what cl OWN maintenance cost. the city told them nope we wont pay for your own problem. then all sudden a month later cl came back and told them under 300k. i could not believe that isp would ask anyone for their own maintenance and up-kept cost. if your wonder cl has let their own lines, boxs etc rot.

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?
Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area?
Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line.
Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe?
Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

Goodbye and Good Riddance CenturyLink!
I've been a captive Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since 2007. Since that time, I've endured countless outages, bandwidth exhausts, evening high latency, and a multitude of billing issues (I know I'm preaching to the choir here...)
Since 2007, I've had two (2!) increases in bandwidth - in late 2007 I was given the ability to go from 5 to 10Mbps, and in 2013 I was able to upgrade to bonded DSL to go from 10 to 20Mbps. I know that I'm actually fortunate with those speeds when it comes to legacy Embarq territory as a huge number are still stuck with less than 10Mbps.
Enter West Carolina Tel (https://gigupgreenwood.com) - a local fiber co-op that is headquartered in an adjacent county. Through the grace of the broadband gods, they have begun fiber deployment in our area and recently have begun construction in our neighborhood. They offer symmetrical gigabit speeds with no cap (price list here: http://wcfiber.net/files/documents/042617_GREENWOOD_WCFIBER.pdf).
Needless to say, I will be dropping CenturyLink the day my fiber order is placed and is turned on. It will be a phone call that is a long time coming.
P.S.
If anyone is interested I will document the fiber install with some pictures.

How can Centurylink be so bad and still be in business?
I just had to get this off my chest,so please excuse the rant! This is the absolute worst incompetent company i have ever dealt with in my life. How i mean how! do they stay is business???
I have had Centurylink phone/dsl for at least 4-5 years.. I can say the only time DSL has ever worked to potential was the first 6 months i had it but it has been downhill ever since- I pay for a lousy 1.5Mbps and they cant even maintain that!
Since the first 6 months i had it,i have literally had to call every 2 weeks to 1 month for the same problems. The line ALWAYS tests good,so they claim, and its not the physical old copper either. Its always some server issue on their end and every single time they make me disconnect everything, reset the modem,etc... and it has never once been a problem on my end.
Sometimes after i get off the phone its magically working again, and i may get at least 1Mbps,but it never ever lasts long.As i sit here and type this the latest speedof.me test is showing 235ms ping with 70Kbps,sometimes the next test shows 2350ms ping and it wont finish the speed test. I am in the country, I am in a bandwidth exhaust area, but i dont expect perfect dsl, especially in prime time, i am realistic! but all i ask for is a lousy 1Mbps at least. I mine as well go to dialup, its cheaper and not much slower!
To all the other poor bastards out there that have no options but to use Centurylink and have spent half their life on their tech help or putting up with substandard service, i feel your pain.
The last person i talked with tonight was actually an American,or spoke english well enough to fool me. 24% packet loss on their end.. Be nice if they upgraded that old 286 server or whatever it is,or at least get someone in there to maintain it who has a clue. Sigh..
Oh and they have credited me some cost back for poor service on the last 2 bills, but i noticed the lastest bill jumped to $190! wtf.

Port Forwarding on Netgear Router
I currently have CenturyLink 100/50 fiber to the house. Tomorrow I get upgraded to 1000/1000 and I really want ditch my CenturyLink Branded C2100T router and use a netgear nighthawk. However I run in to the strangest issue when the Netgear is up, it will not port forward. I've tried almost every setting I can think of, Prisim works, I can get out on the internet but I can't get RDP to work through the firewall.
I Cant get the router to respond to ping even though the settings are set to allow ping on the wan port, i can't get to remote management, Nothing gets through the firewall and the router log doesn't show any attempt. The only way I can get anything to happen is to move my PC to the DMZ then it works just great but it's in the DMZ and I really dont want to leave my PC there.
Does anyone have any ideas? Does the CL C2100T really do some kind of magic that the netgear cannot?

[CenturyTel] Admin Page
I tried using the Centurylink Admin page to release or reset the modem. When I use it the DSL connection connection comes back up fine (turns green shows connected again) but the Internet connection (stays yellow for long periods of time) and I have to go the the actual modem unplug it to get the Internet button to turn green again. I waited 33 minutes and it never reconnected but stayed yellow. Why won't it work thru the admin page?

[Qwest] I thought DSL had dedicated bandwidth that I pay for.
I thought DSL had dedicated bandwidth that I pay for. I live in Longmont co. and just upgraded to 7.5 down. I have and auto speed test run through the day and the speed varies and incredible amount?? All the way down to 3.0 one time and slowly climbed back up. Upload seems plagued by something called Buffer Bloat and apparently very slow. I have DSL run tests for a fee. Any ideas on why DSL from Qwest is so erratic?

Centurylink fiber slowdowns in Seattle
Anyone noticing random centurylink fiber slowdowns? After the holidays (and coincidentally enough, new adjacent neighbors in the townhouse row I'm in) I'm noting rather extreme download speed slowdowns. When I'm running speed tests the upload speeds are well in excess of my down and I didn't think Centurylink throttled speeds.
Know of any ongoing issues or seeing the same thing?

Just upgraded to 1G service
I just upgraded from Comcast/Xfinity and am trying to get my network, specifically my router working without the current cascading setup I have running after the upgrade.
The Fiber is connected to the Calix 716GE-I, port 2 is active. I upgraded the cheap cat 5 provided to a shielded cat 6 cable which connects to the WAN on the CenturyLink installed ZyXEL c2100z router. From there LAN 1 is connected to my ZyXEL USG 50 for now.
I had been using a ZyXEL USG 50 but would like to move to a Linksys LRT214 or a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 5 or 8 port
Questions for the community.
1. Can I connect directly to the Calix 716GE-I with my router or does connectivity pass though the ZyXEL c2100z?
2. Setup of PPPoe, everything I have tried fails to connect the CenturyLink will only advise to use their equipment, any help with settings is appreciated.
3. Thoughts on Linksys LRT 214 or the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter?
4. Any other relevant items I should look into?
On a side note, they did arial to underground with the line dropped till the spring. I will be installing conduit so I don't have to pay for their bury service and deal with them chopping up my sprinklers. Anyone had any experience asking CL to come back out to run the fiber through conduit?
Thanks

Can CenturyLink Tech and Customer Service be any worse?

============
Total Fail. Man, I wish I had recorded the last few calls with them. It might have gone viral on the tubes.
I'll try to keep this short. (EDIT: I failed).
Mom has Internet service via Century Link. For over a year now, she's had intermittent issues with service. We had called for troubleshooting help and remote diag couldn't identify the issue. A suggestion was made that we had internal wiring issues, which was possible since it was old phone line. So I ran a new single piece of shielded wire from the outside connection directly to the modem. As good as you can get for DSL. No change, still occasionally having to reboot DSL modem.
So, we called for an on-site tech, he came out, looked at everything (I wasn't there) and said it was all good, could find no issues.
Still having issues, I thought that this was a really old modem and my Mediacom had me upgrade my modem to handle the upgraded network they've installed in the last few years. So, last spring, I called CL (I had to pretend to be Tom, Mom's ex-husband, she couldn't get his name off the account and wouldn't call Tom to have him assist - she still won't talk to him. She just kept paying the bill) - I called CL and said the modem is really old and I wanted a new one. CL said, nope, modem is good, don't need a new one. I thought OK, they should know. So no new modem.
Still rebooting modem occasionally until Christmas day, internet went out. Next day, I called CL, talked to a tech - he looked at diag, said there was a "crosslink" issue on their end, he put me on hold, then came back and we rebooted modem a couple of times and internet was back.
The next day, Wednesday, internet was down again. I called again and first got the process started to get Tom off the account. Got it all set up, I called Tom and had him call CL to give his code and permission. Tom called back after about a half hour and confirmed successful transfer to my Mom. We then had me added on the account so that I could make the calls. Good, I didn't have to pretend to be Tom anymore.
Proceeded with the diag on the internet connection. They could see the link was good to the modem but modem wasn't working "well", they asked for model and serial number which I provided and the tech chuckled,
"That modem was installed in 2009 and has been obsoleted for several years now, you should have gotten a new modem".
I told the tech I tried last spring to get a new modem, but whatever, lets move forward. I told him I'd go buy a new modem but he said they could send me one for free and a $50 gift card for our troubles.
"Cool, How long will it take to get the modem here?"
Tech: "We'll ship today, 2 days, so modem will be there on Friday".
Great, so I asked twice to be sure and got confirmation that on Friday that when the modem arrived, that I could hook it up, and then call CL to get the modem provisioned (set-up) and we'd be back online. Tech said yes, and I'd also get a confirmation email (at the new email address of Mom's, not Tom's) and that someone from CL would call on Friday to make sure everything was working. And indeed, we got an email with a new account number and confirmation email on Mom's email.
Friday comes and goes, no modem.
Today, Saturday, I call CL.
I tell them who I am, they say they can't talk to me, I'm not authorized. Nothing I could do would convince them and when I gave them new account # and confirmation #, they still said they couldn't confirm or deny as I wasn't authorized. They asked to speak to Mom, and so she did provide last 4 digits of SS# and told them she wanted me authorized, which they did.
So, I'm back on the phone - they can't find any record of the modem, the call - nothing.
I'm getting rather irate, told them they better figure it out.
So, they transferred me to "Customer Service" and talked with them - they confirmed that no modem was shipped but that we did have an appt for a tech to come out and INSTALL a new modem on JAN 16th.
You have to be kidding me. I had clearly been told modem was going to be sent and would be here yesterday. NOTHING was said about a tech coming out.
So, I asked for the modem to be drop shipped, couldn't it be here by Tuesday?
Nope, they won't ship a modem because we have a ticket (despite the automated system you get when your first call that says "checking for service request on your account, saying there wasn't one) for modem install on the 16th of Jan.
OK, I asked if we go out and buy a modem, can we then call back in and get it set up and get internet back.
Nope, can't do that because you have a service request scheduled.
I'm pissed now. Actually, I was pissed a while ago, but I'm really pissed now.
I said "OK, cancel this account, we'll get a different internet provider".
I was hoping they'd then take it to heart and send me a dingin' modem, or let me go buy one.
Nope, tech says we can't do that, you'll need to call another number. I ask and she gives me another number and asked what else she can do for me. Good god.
So, I call that other number and it says they are closed. I suppose they are, at 2 PM on Saturday.
Can you believe that crap? Nothing but a cluster fack. And there's actually more detail that I left out, I spent over 2 hours on the phone with them - for a simple modem replacement that should have been done at least one, if not two years ago. Unbelievable.
Mediacom will be about $10-15 more a month but I think that's what I'll do. Mom isn't sure, she hates change and it is more $ for her, which she doesn't have.
But I'm pissed, I simply can't stand the thought of giving these facks anymore of my (mom's) business.
And I'm gonna spread this story across the internet. It's atrocious IMO, and they should suffer as I have suffered.
Well, I feel a little better. A little.

[CenturyTel] Need help interpreting usage statistics
I am new to CL and have VDSL service via a C1100T modem, and the speeds are good vs. other ADSL experiences I've had--I typically get about 30Mbps down and 3Mbps up.
In looking at the DSL statistics in the modem admin pages, I find SNR down/up to typically be 16/24dB and Power down/up to be 12/-12dBm. Do these look reasonable? FWIW the CL substation is virtually across the street from me.
I also note that in the last 5 days my Total Usage has been 101,308Mbits down. Am I right to calculate this as 10131Mbytes and thus usage over 5 days has been 10GB?
Thanks for reading!

Directv HD is good, but not perfect by any means. I can see the bandwidth limitations.
