[CenturyTel] Fiber Newbie Questions

$

Hi All: Thanks for helping me with the bridging of my C1100Z. Some questions I have (all of these are over a wired connection not wireless): 1. Yesterday I tried recording a BB game from ESPN3. Surprisingly, it didn't go well, since it buffered a lot and froze. Is this a problem with ESPN3 or my connection? 2. This may be obvious but what is the fastest download speed you have seen with a 1 Gb connection? The fastest I have seen is 18 MBPS (or 144 Mbps). Most are in the range of 7 to 11 MBPS (56 to 88 Mbps) Shouldn't I be getting faster downloads? There are no obvious errors in my router's log (a R7800). Many thanks and Happy Thanksgiving Day! P.

fiber setup options for apartment.

I finally got my install for my centurylink gig fiber done yesterday and I'm trying to decide the best way to setup this up. It's an external ont install with a cat5 run from the ont to a small wiring panel in my apartment closet. From there I have hard wire runs to the living room and desk area. I have my main PC in the desk area and a few entertainment devices in the living room. Trying to keep as much as possible hardwired. I have the new C2100Z, my original netgear R6250 which supports vlan tagging, and a gig unmanaged switch floating around. I was thinking of putting the switch in the closet, connect the PC and the C2100Z in the living room but I'm thinking I can't put an unmanaged switch in between the ONT and router due to the vlan packets. Other option is putting the C2100Z in the closet to do the switching and routing. Use it as wireless ap assuming coverage is ok from the closet or put my netgear in AP mode. Not to concerned about wireless devices having blazing fast speed. Trying not to buy any other equipment if i can avoid it. Maybe willing to cave and pick up a managed switch that will fit in the wiring box so I can keep it a closed up. What would you guys do.

I have the C1100T currently being leased from CenturyLink. I have the 40/5 service but experience some instability sometimes with wifi or ping spikes. Would the C2000T be an upgrade? I am not very knowledgeable in networking so any advice or wisdom is appreciated! Also I would like to raise my bufferbloat score from a C. Here is some information from my router page DSL Downstream: 40.127 Mbps DSL Upstream: 5.116 Mbps DSL Line Status: MARGINAL Broadband Mode Detected: VDSL2 - 8A

Centurylink walled garden

I have two questions: 1. Are any of you seeing walled garden when accessing internet? Usually it's for security issues in corporate networks. CL claims my router must be upgraded and they sent the C2100T (which i see is just as bad as other previous modems CL provides) Spent hours trying to figure out why and all they will say is the (i'm adding words here) DSLAMs will be getting a software update and my current modem is incompatible. However, there has been no DSL standards update that would prevent my current modem from working. 2. To make matters worse every time i try to configure the C2100T the way i want it, whether i change the default admin password or not, it will not let me log back in. It requires a factory reset. It seems to be tied to changing the DHCP service, but i need to do it (or shall i say I am completely unwilling NOT to do it). Anyone else seen this? If it matters, i don't want to connect it until it is configured the way *I* want it.

Fiber in Rogersville, MO

Hello all. Last month, CL contractors pulled fiber down my highway. I stopped and talked to the workers, who were very friendly and happy to share what they knew. They told me it was indeed fiber and showed me the route it took down the country roads. The work is complete, and the workers are gone. So my question is....now what? Calling customer service didn’t get me anywhere, they still show my max available speed as 4mbps. What is CL’s next step, any guesses? I’ve been 11 years with the same 4mbps speed and maybe getting a little restless.

CenturyLink Fiber - Is the provided modem required?

Backstory: 2 months ago we wired our house with ethernet and set up some Ubiquiti hardware (EdgeRouter Pro + EdgeSwitch). I supplied the router with the PPPoE credentials and tagged VLAN 201 as required. It has all been working great. Now, last Thursday (what a great Thanksgiving gift) internet stopped working at 1:00 PM. Checking the router logs it looks like the ONT may have failed because there were "Timeout waiting for PADO packet" messages. I called CenturyLink and they couldn't access the ONT remotely to reboot it so they scheduled a technician for Monday. That's 5 days without service. Now the tech comes out and replaces the card in the ONT which he says failed and the line tested good to him. The tech said that this is going to happen every so often to me because I don't use the provided modem/router. He said that their system routinely checks for supported modems and "bans" the non-supported? He also noted that if it happens too often then service will just be shut off. His recommendation was to buy the $100 modem and put it into bridge mode in front of my EdgeRouter. Is this true or is this just a case of the ONT failing and the tech not knowing what he's talking about?

How to extend or replace fiber from box to ONT

Hi im hoping someone can help me. After the install of gigabit fiber i kind of want to move the ONT. At the moment a fiber line is going from the side of my house where the line comes out of the ground to the ONT which is in a bedroom. I kind of want to move it a few rooms over to my server room, the tech at the time said he was unable to do that. Now i can either replace the cable from box -> ONT or what would be much easier is if i can take the cable out of the ONT and extend it inside the house through attic to the room. Is this doable? and if so what kind of cables / connector would i need?

Residential Trouble - secondary DSL circuit drops primary...

One of my business customers got me involved in a residential issue and I'm getting no results from CenturyLink. The location had an existing adsl2 but they were maxing out the downstream bandwidth pretty regularly. The market doesn't support vdsl, nor does it support bonding, so I suggested they get a second adsl2 circuit and I'd just use and EdgeRouter to bond the two WAN connections. The odd thing is that when the 2nd modem is connected to the phone line and powered up it causes the 1st to drop sync. 2nd never syncs. If you disconnect the 1st modem, and only connect the 2nd, it syncs. These are delivered on separate pairs to the NID. We opened a ticket for a vendor meet on the 20th, but the CL tech showed up 4 hours early and I wasn't available to drive the 45 min to the location at that time. The local tech gave me some BS about signal fine but there's voltage on the line and then he closed the ticket even after he told me he'd escalate the issue. If any one from CL can help I can PM any additional information like the service address and prior ticket number.

[Embarq] host smtp.embarqmail.com[206.152.134.66] refused to talk to me:

I see this almost constantly now when postfix is sending an hourly syslog snippet message. The complete error is: host smtp.embarqmail.com[206.152.134.66] refused to talk to me: 421 4.3.4 allocated resources exceeded I just finished chat at century link and the person there was totally clueless as to what I'm trying to say. I've asked about this here but never really got any help. Who can century link can I call that would have a clue about the above error? I'm not sending more than one email an hour so it's not like their server thinks I'm a spammer. These are hourly syslog snippets and eventually they do go out or at least most of them do.

Centurylink is upgrading this area with new dslams. I was told bonded service would be offered. I was wondering what the cost has been for this service compared to a single line. I currently pay $45 for a single 6mbps line. Thanks

Will Centurylink run fiber directly to my house from splice box?

Centurylink is currently installing DSLAM's in my area. They ran fiber optic lines in between the 3 DSLAM's. They placed what I was told is a BD7 fiber splice junction box 50 yards from my house. I was wondering if there is any chance Centurylink would run fiber from this junction box directly to my house. If is is possible or if they would even consider it, any thoughts on the price for something like this? I attached a picture of the box.

Dynamic DNS

Just got CL and exploring the C1100T DSL Modem and it seems it only works with DynDNS. Is there any way/workaround for me to use instead No-IP with this? Alternatively, could I use instead my TP-Link Archer D7 (DSL) Router with CenturyLink service? If not, is there a Bridge Mode available with this thing? The Help is not searchable it seems to I can't find it.

[Qwest] Should I use the Qwest/CenturyLink DNS servers?

For many years I used Google's DNS but gave Quad9 (9.9.9.9) a go. In my Minneapolis neighborhood Quad9 seemed slow, so I ran Steve Gibson's DNS benchmark utility. After running this benchmark, Quad9 was listed as the second slowest of the lot with CenturyLink's Legacy DNS being the fastest. Is there any reason not to use CenturyLink over slower DNS servers? Thanks for any insight.

Best Modem/Router Combo to Purchase

I am looking to get rid of my rental modem/router from Centurylink. Looking to see the best options to purchase with VDSL2 modem transport capabilities. I run wireless gaming systems, cameras, phones, laptops, and other handheld devices. Looking for speed and reliability.

[Embarq] My Embarq service now has double the upload speed, for no reason.

So I just noticed that my 1.5Mbit package from Centurylink (formerly Embarq) is no longer syncing at 1760/288, but for the first time in like +6 years its been upped to 1760/576. I did nothing to initiate this as of recent, but I have tried and failed years back. The switch happened Sept 29th, which was a Friday in the early morning. I only figured it out now two weeks later as my router is set up for QoS at old upload rate instead of the newest rate, so the router was limiting me. Only when I happened to log into the modem did I see. I know that Qwest, Centurytel, and Embarq all kind of do their own thing with setting sync speeds for the same packages. In my experience with Embarq they would over provision the download side to allow for DSL FEC overhead and giving the user their listed download speeds. So I get 1.5Mbit download speed on my 1.5Mbit package. But they are also know for their garbage upload rates which they tend to like to hide, as they say nothing about it online their site. It's been pretty bad to live with, making this out of the blue doubling of the sync rate great but also puzzling. As I don't believe they did anything on my phone line to improve it but simply changed a value at the DSLAM in the CO (which I am connected to, not remote) to double the upload rate and utilize unused bandwidth that has been there all these years. I also have around a Mbit of unused bandwidth on the download side which Centurylink does not seem to care to give me for the $60 I already spend but one day at a time. I know Centurylink took CAF 2 money from the FCC for my area, so this bump might have something to do with it. But CAF 2 requires 1Mbit upload and I'm now currently at 0.5Mbit, and my current line has no home of 1Mbit up. So I don't know what is up. A snap shot of my recent sync history on my modem for the curious. FYI most of the CRC/FEC errors are from thunderstorms. https://i.imgur.com/LH74C4Q.png

[CenturyTel] Why is high local wifi traffic harmful to my ADSL connection?

$

Recently, I installed two D-Link wifi-enabled security cameras that stream video to a D-Link digital network recorder (DNR-202L). The cameras' combined wifi bandwidth spikes at 8Mbps. The DNR-202L is connected to one of the Ethernet jacks on my ZyXEL C1100Z ADSL modem/wifi router and, since the recorder isn't configure to stream video to a D-Link account, it has 272GB of storage capacity. The cameras and digital recorder are all configured to send data only inside my wifi network, because it was my goal not to consume any of my precious ADSL connection bandwidth. In addition, the cameras and DNR work great! Since I installed this hardware my C1100Z has been exhibiting ADSL connection speed instability! At times, the download speed drops by 50%, which is a first for this modem! I think that I need to purchase a wifi router for my camera setup to use, but I'd like to understand why I messed-up my ADSL connection by adding locally connected wifi devices! Any thoughts?
