New Centurylink 1 Gb Fiber Connection and my Netgear R7800

Hi all: A relative newbie here. I had my new service installed a few days ago. CL used a Zyzel C1100Z modem/router. When I connect with that (directly to my PC) I get about 920 Mbps. So, I thought I would use my Netgear Nighthawk R7800 in place of the Zyzel for the increase WiFi range. However, when I do that I get only 530 or so Mbps. I religiously followed the guide at http://kmwoley.com/blog/bypassing-needless-centurylink-wireless-router-on-gigabit-fiber/ Turned off QoS, Traffic meter, etc. Any suggestions as to what the problem is? Many thanks! P.

Service van parked on street near house idling for over 2 HOURS.

A CL service van was parked near my house with the engine idling, headlights and wipers on for 2 hours 18 minutes. I don't believe this would be allowed in the city of MPLS, which is not where I live. But what I'm wondering is, is this usual practice? It's their gasoline and all, but I'm a bit annoyed when I see this as it is causing air pollution.

Team Fishel installing fiber for CenturyLink in Phoenix?

Once again there are Team Fishel crews on my street. In the past, Team Fishel did work for Cox. When they were on our street two months ago my brother asked who they were working for and he was told CenturyLink. I made some calls to try and find out what exactly was being done. The CSR's I spoke to said there was nothing in the system. My brother went out and talked to one of them last saturday (6/18/2017) and was told they were installing fiber for CL and the work will be completed within the week. Anyone have a number to call to find out what is being done. I tried calling today and was rerouted several times and then was disconnected.

looking for a modem and router for new CenturyLink fios service.

I just got hooked up to CenturyLink fios and I love it. Unfortunately I am "renting" their modem/router and that is what I would like to remedy. In the past I have used NetGear equipment and I would like to continue using NetGear. Does anyone know of a NetGear modem/router combo that will work with CenturyLink fios?

Goodbye and Good Riddance CenturyLink!

I've been a captive Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since 2007. Since that time, I've endured countless outages, bandwidth exhausts, evening high latency, and a multitude of billing issues (I know I'm preaching to the choir here...) Since 2007, I've had two (2!) increases in bandwidth - in late 2007 I was given the ability to go from 5 to 10Mbps, and in 2013 I was able to upgrade to bonded DSL to go from 10 to 20Mbps. I know that I'm actually fortunate with those speeds when it comes to legacy Embarq territory as a huge number are still stuck with less than 10Mbps. Enter West Carolina Tel (https://gigupgreenwood.com) - a local fiber co-op that is headquartered in an adjacent county. Through the grace of the broadband gods, they have begun fiber deployment in our area and recently have begun construction in our neighborhood. They offer symmetrical gigabit speeds with no cap (price list here: http://wcfiber.net/files/documents/042617_GREENWOOD_WCFIBER.pdf). Needless to say, I will be dropping CenturyLink the day my fiber order is placed and is turned on. It will be a phone call that is a long time coming. P.S. If anyone is interested I will document the fiber install with some pictures.

Since yesterday I have been getting a "Login Refused" message when I try to check my CLink email. I have tried with both Claws-mail and the Windows 10 Mail app, and neither one is able to connect. Looks like a new generation modem with AC2350 WiFi is out, data sheet site is unavailable but in the help section, looking at the "Resources Section " image, it shows a CPU speed of at least 598 MHz. Looks like it's also tested for DFS channels with the FCC. CenturyLink Help Page: https://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/modem-zyxel.html# FCC Info: https://fccid.io/I88C3000Z

fiber setup options for apartment.

I finally got my install for my centurylink gig fiber done yesterday and I'm trying to decide the best way to setup this up. It's an external ont install with a cat5 run from the ont to a small wiring panel in my apartment closet. From there I have hard wire runs to the living room and desk area. I have my main PC in the desk area and a few entertainment devices in the living room. Trying to keep as much as possible hardwired. I have the new C2100Z, my original netgear R6250 which supports vlan tagging, and a gig unmanaged switch floating around. I was thinking of putting the switch in the closet, connect the PC and the C2100Z in the living room but I'm thinking I can't put an unmanaged switch in between the ONT and router due to the vlan packets. Other option is putting the C2100Z in the closet to do the switching and routing. Use it as wireless ap assuming coverage is ok from the closet or put my netgear in AP mode. Not to concerned about wireless devices having blazing fast speed. Trying not to buy any other equipment if i can avoid it. Maybe willing to cave and pick up a managed switch that will fit in the wiring box so I can keep it a closed up. What would you guys do.

Actiontec C1900A or ZyXel C1100Z

Hello CL gurus I am interested to know if one of these modems is recommended over the other for CL 40/20 GPON service? I'm looking at transitioning from the rental to the purchase and frankly I have used both, have the choice of either, but not noticed any difference. Any reputations or stories from the installed base that would make one of these preferable over the other? In my situation the wireless performance is a don't care as I'll be putting in Ubiquity WAPs soon, and the modem will sit behind a netgear switch. I'm aware of the bonded feature of the Actiontec but as I know that is a don't care as well. I thought I could find more info out there but couldn't dig up anything that would sway my decision either way.

DSL Modem Only Question

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions on a DSL Modem only as I intend to keep my existing router. I have considered the Netgear DM200 but I cant seem to get confirmation on if it would work for me here in Las Vegas 89131 with internet only and no prism. It seems like it ultimately comes down to if its a bonded line or not and I cant get any answers directly from centurylink support. Cox is killing me now with these data caps, I have to make the switch from Cable to DSL to get the 40M unlimited plan. Bye Ultimate 300 =(

Pair bonded service now single pair-tech rolls Wednesday

After a few months of relative happiness at 20/2 VDSL2 pair bonded service, I've noticed that my speed seemed slower and upon hitting the modem webpage, can confirm that while DSL1 is performing as promised (10/1), DSL2 is "not connected". After troubleshooting on my side, checking connections, cycling power, etc, I called CL and their rep messed around on their end with remote testing before saying that they needed to send a tech out to my neighborhood to check things, including possibly into my home. OK, I get that and if a brief inspection of my 4 month old, 20' run of Cat5e will make them feel better, more power to them. My neighborhood is semi-rural and our telephone lines are tap-ridden and old. THE Question: Are their any special things that I might say or ask the Tech when he gets here to help empower him/make CL get off their infrastructure investment @ss to modernize the lines?

[Qwest] How do I get pair bonding on a residential account?

I currently have 40/20 DSL service. Several months ago I was informed that the service at my address qualifies for 80/40 with pair bonding, but I declined to order it due to price. With their price for life pricing, it seems that pricing may have gone down and I wish to order it now. I understand that I'll need to pay for a tech visit and a new modem. However, after speaking with several reps today, I was advised that I can only get pair bonding with a business account and not a residential account. This doesn't seem right. Has anyone been able to get pair bonding on a residential account recently? If so, which department do I need to talk to? I've talked to tech support, customer care, loyalty, and business support. None of them were able to order it for me.

New CL service, modem suggestions

So about two years ago, Centurylink was canvassing our condos for new service. At that time they could only offer like 20mbs down or something, and pretty dismal upload. I was (am) currently with Cox and getting about 120 down and 20-25 up, so wasn't looking for a change. Now they just canvased our area again, but this time they are offering 80mbs up/down. A big change in the speed obviously, and having the increased upload is key to me. The price smacked me in the face also, as $55/month "for life". For an extra $10 I could get 100mbs up/down. Obviously, this beats Cox's speed and price, currently paying $93/month and it seems to increase by about $5/year; just went up again btw. Looking over the currently compatible hardware on CL's site, I see many choices. Looks like the quoted speeds are VDSL2, but the rep did mention fiber also. Not a big fan of $10/month to lease equipment, so what's a good recommendation? Seems like the XyZEL, Actiontec and Technicolor are supporters of 100Mbs over VDSL2, and they support vectoring; which I read elsewhere as recommended to futureproof. Any other suggestions for hardware? Wireless is nice, but not a requirement. I have a Cisco WAP4410 lying around if needed. My current cable modem is a 4-port switch w/wifi, uplinked to a 10-port switch. Also, what am I looking at for work in the home? Currently, the cable jack is in the living room, where my home office is. A perfect spot, but the phone jack in the same area is in the kitchen area between the rooms. Not a good place at all (but who uses PoTs anymore?). Having it terminated at a bedroom jack and relying on wireless won't fly either. Anyone know how extensive their installers are? Regarding phone wiring also. Will they replace the data line with CAT5 or leave it as CAT3 and term at that point? Experience with my prior condo was piss poor wiring inside and that put me on the cable bandwagon. Current condo was built about 20-years ago. I have access to the box outside, can pull a new CAT5 line through, replace keystone and be done....or will they do this during install? I get a 30-day window on trial of service but believe the $60 install charge still applies. Not a fan of that, having installed own equipment in past, hence wondering what will they actually do. I can just buy my own modem, pull a good lead out (CAT5), and let them do the outside work while I active my own modem. TLDR: What modem is good for VDSL2, maybe with GPON, for Centurylink in Las Vegas (89146) area? Switching for better upload as I stream multiple RTMP feeds and use VPN in both directions. Cox is getting more expensive yearly. Also, what does the installer actually do? Any inside wiring?

I was pleasantly surprised to see that CL is giving even existing customers a $30/mo discount off of Gigabit fiber speeds here in Seattle. My $79.99 tier is now only $49.99 for the next 3 months. Never have I ever witnessed another provider offer a discount without asking. Nicely done CL!

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?

Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area? Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line. Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe? Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

new 100mbit install in Sierra Vista AZ - which modem?

I just signed up for new service in Sierra Vista. Was a bit distressed to learn no Cox in the area (not that they're exactly stellar, but the reviews of CL are downright frightening!). We are only going to be in the house for 4-5 months while a new home is being built, so I"m renting the modem from them. Does anybody know which modem will they (likely) install for 100mbit service?
