[Qwest] C2100T transparent bridging woes

I just got GPON 100/50 installed today and am trying to get my C2100T to work in transparent bridging mode so I can use my Airport Extreme for PPPoE/DHCP/NAT as I had done previously with my DSL. I feel like there's something wrong with this box or the firmware in general, as settings don't seem to want to stick when I save them. It took me a while before I was able to get the transparent bridging mode to "stick" under WAN Settings, but now I can't get the Broadband Settings to stay — they keep defaulting back to what they were before. Settings so far are: Advanced Setup > WAN Settings: • ISP Protocol: Transparent Bridging • Transport Mode: Tagged-201 these are now set and stay set. But if I go to: Modem Status > WAN Status: • VLAN Type Selected: Auto Detect - Untagged • ONT IP Address: 0.0.0.0 etc I saw elsewhere I need to manually change Broadband Settings, too, so: Advanced Setup > Broadband Settings: • WAN Type: Auto Select (keeps defaulting back to this even if I manually select Ethernet) • WAN Type Selected: WAN Ethernet Port 5 (so, it's autodetecting fine) The problem seems to be here: • Transport Mode: Auto Select --> defaults back to this even though I choose Tagged, and VLAN ID: 201, and hit Apply • MTU: 1500 (I've tried 1492 also as I've seen that posted somewhere too, not sure which is correct for fiber, but either way it doesn't stick and reverts back to 1500) I hit Apply, and it seems to reboot the modem, and the settings revert. I think I had the same problem with getting transparent bridging to stick on the other page, and not sure how I got that to finally stick. So... frustrating. Once I get this to stick, it should work fine with the Airport Extreme, right? I saw an alternative solution where if you get a managed switch that lets you configure a port for VLAN 201, you can completely remove the C2100T altogether from the equation and I'd be able to use the Airport Extreme attached to that, correct? Thanks for any help in advance, this is super frustrating! **EDIT: Figured it out — I didn't know you also had to go into Broadband Settings to set VLAN 201 and MTU 1492. The additional problem was that I tried setting that probably 20 times and each time it'd reset itself back to auto and not set properly... finally got it to work by turning bridging back OFF and back to PPPoE, THEN changed the Broadband Settings and it stuck, THEN turned transparent bridging back on and it works! Leaving this up in case it helps someone else out, I literally lost a few hours trying to solve this.**

Does this mean we're giving up our right to complain to the FCC besides the other stuff? The Revised High‐Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement has been updated from your previous agreement with CenturyLink primarily with regard to: (1) how the agreement can be amended in the future, and (2) the mandatory arbitration procedures that must be used (rather than using lawsuits, jury trials, or class actions) in any disputes between CenturyLink and you. There are other changes as well. Please read the entire Revised High‐Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement carefully to determine if the changes in the Revised HSI Agreement are right for you. https://www.centurylink.com/internetoptout/

I have Centurylinks FTTH 100Mbps down and 50Mbps at random times of the day YouTube struggles to even play videos at 240p even thought the speedtests come out fine. I hear Centurylink has major YouTube peering issues. Could this be whats happening to me as well? Also, Youtube seems to be the only site I have been having issues with. I ran a traceroute while the problem occurred and these are the Results Tracing route to 74.125.159.212 over a maximum of 30 hops 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 184.99.0.11 4 22 ms 1 ms 1 ms cosp-agw1.inet.qwest.net [184.99.1.81] 5 3 ms 4 ms 3 ms dvr-edge-15.inet.qwest.net [208.168.152.70] 6 47 ms 51 ms 54 ms 72.164.247.142 7 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 108.170.253.145 8 5 ms 4 ms 5 ms 108.170.234.59 9 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 74.125.159.212

3 Mbps DSL Line -- Centurylink Won't Upgrade?

I have used the DMT tool and remember the stats. I have great quality connnection with the junction box up the street. My neighbors can get 10, but I can only get 3Mbps. They refuse to give me higher speeds and tell em it won't work, but I think they are misinformed. Is there a reason for me to think they misinformed and who should I be speaking to about an upgrade. This company offered an upgraded speed in the past, but recently they have been saying no and flat out denying new customers on this side of the street. What is going on. This line does support 10Mbps and probably much higher, but they insist it can't be done.

Enable NAT Loopback on the C2100Z

After a lot of trial and error, the best/fastest configuration for me seems to be the Centurylink provided ZyXEL C2100Z with the wireless radios off and an Orbi mesh system in AP mode. The only issue I had was I couldn't get the port forwarding to work but eventually realized that it was the NAT loopback that was disabled. I could access my server just fine from anywhere except from within my network (excluding using its IP address directly of course). Does anyone know how to enable NAT loopback on this modem? I can't find anything in the GUI and nothing I found online (using telnet or ssh) worked either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Interference from Mains causing signal degrade.

I recently noticed something with my DSL. Whenever I have certain devices in the garage my SNR drops. It will go from 11-13, all the way down to 4-6. It's fairly dramatic. I stopped using my equipment for a couple days and my sync speed doubled. Has anyone ever experienced this? I recently had more power added to my garage(from 10 amps, who the fuck puts 10 AMPS into a garage, to 100 amps.) The line that was run for this is very close to the POTS, so close in fact, the conduit going into the Mains prevents the POTS from opening fully. Anyone experience interference like this? Anyone know to cost of moving the POTS? I need to either move the POTS, or just redo the conduit to come from the side, instead of underneath the Mains.

Anybody Have CenturyLinks Fiber service in AZ?

I am currently with Cox and have the 300/30 plan with a base ping around 25ms. I have been having congestion issues lately and my pings are not that consistent with random spiking above 80-130ms. From what I understand is a VDSL line is a dedicated line, so you should have less congestion and a more stable ping. I am considering CenturyLink's 40mbps (FTTN) plan. Unfortunately, they do not offer FTTH (fiber to the home) in my neighborhood. I am looking for input from users that have CenturyLink as their provider. What are your pings? How is the jitter and overall quality of your connections(ping plotter)? How consistent are your speeds? Also looking for gaming input (better or worse than cable?). Also, if I do decide to go with CenturyLink, does anyone have a preferred VDSL modem? I would prefer to purchase my own vs renting. And.. Cable or DSL/Fiber? Which works better for gaming?

CenturyLink C2100T admin password recovery

The previous owner of a CL 2100T for some reason tore off the sticker that displayed the serial number, MAC address, default passwords for wireless as well as the default admin password. I am able to get to the modems page at 168.192.0.1 and am able retrieve the serial number as well as the default wireless ssids and passwords for wireless, but cannot find a way to find the default admin password. Does anyone know how I can retrieve the default admin password? Thank you in advance!

How to almost use any router with CenturyLink's 1 Gig Internet!

$

So I have CenturyLink's 1 gigabit Internet. One of the biggest complaints I've seen around the Internet over the last year or so is that it's really difficult to use the router of your choice with their service. CenturyLink provides some pretty awful equipment with their gigabit Internet service. Wireless-N router. Seriously? The 2 biggest problems I see are the VLAN 201 issue where CL requires you to put a VLAN 201 on the Internet/WAN port of our router. A lot of consumer routers don't support this, or you have to flash custom firmware, etc. And the 2nd biggest problem is consumer routers not being able to download up to the full gigabit speed. Some routers cap out at 300Mbps - 500Mbps. I FINALLY HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION! Between the 2 problems mentioned above, my steps below completely solve th VLAN 201 issue. Now I'm not a networking person, so maybe this seems pretty obvious to some of you. However, over my last year of research, I have not seen this mentioned anywhere on the Internet. I finally found this info on DD-WRT forum website by someone who goes by the username "JAMESMTL." He suggested to a user "why don't you just buy a managed switch and create a VLAN 201 on it." I seriously thought to myself, "is that all it takes to finally fix this VLAN 201 issue once and for all?" Absolutely! So here's the switch I bought off of Amazon "NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105Ev2 5-Port Gigabit Web Managed (Plus) Switch (GS105Ev2)" I got it for roughly $40. Once I got the switch in the mail, it was pretty much just configuring the switch with VLANs 201 on ports 1 and 2. This way the managed switch handles the VLAN 201 issue and then you can almost use any router you want with your CenturyLink service! Keep in mind, I think you will still have to have a pretty new and kick-butt router, because the router needs to have decent hardware so it can download almost gigabit speeds. I think it's called "NAT acceleration?" From what I've leared online over the last year or so, some routers write their firmware to take advance of this. It's a mixture of hardware/software. If you're going to try and use an old router from a couple years ago, you may run into the 2nd biggest problem I've mentioned above. Your router may cap out download speeds of 300Mbps - 500Mbps. 2 routers I have tested behind my managed switch, are Asus AC3100 and the Netgear Orbi that just came out last month. Both routers performed excellent in speed tests! I was able to achieve 900+Mbps. Now on to the good stuff! Configuring the Netgear ProSafe GS105Ev2! -------------------===============------------------- In a nutshell, this is essentially how your network is going to setup with the managed switch: switch port 1 -> The ethernet cord going from your ONT box is to be plugged into port 1 on the managed switch. switch port 2 -> The ethernet cord going from port 2 of the managed switch will plug into the WAN (or Internet) port on the back of your router. switch port 3 -> The ethernet cord going from port 3 should plug into your computer's Ethernet port so you can access the switch's admin panel to configure it. STEPS TO CONFIGURE THE SWITCH WITH VLAN 201: So what you're going to do is open the Netgear Utility program to manage this switch. 1. Disable DHCP on the switch, as your router will be handling DHCP. You'll do this by clicking on 'IP Settings' after the utility program discovers your switch. 2. Make sure the switch is on the same subnet as your router. My default router's gateway is 192.168.1.1, therefore, after I disabled DHCP on the switch, the Netgear utility program assigned the switch an IP address of 192.168.1.15. Perfect! Now the Netgear switch is on the same IP subnet as my router. Apply the settings! Now it's time to go into the switch and configure it! 3. Click the VLAN tab in the Netgear configuration utility program. 4. Click on 802.1Q 5. Click on 'Advanced' 6. Enable Advanced 802.1Q 7. Create a VLAN ID with the value '201' 8. Now click on the 'VLAN Membership' link on the left-hand side. 9. In the 'VLAN Identifier' drop-down list, select 201 10. Click on the white box right below 01 port until the letter 'T' is displayed. (T stands for 'tagged.' Port 1 is going to be 201 Tagged.) 11. Click on the white box right below 02 port until the letter 'U' is displayed. (U stands for 'untagged.' Port 2 is going to be 201 Untagged.) 12. Click on the white boxes below the rest of the ports (ports 3, 4, and 5) until there is nothing displayed in the boxes. 13. Click 'Apply' to save your changes. 14. Finally, click 'port PVID' on the left-hand side. 15. Put a check-mark next to Port 01 and Port 02. Assign them both a PVID of 201. Click 'Apply' to save your changes. 16. Configure your home router with your CenturyLink's PPPoE credentials. You can get this info by calling CenturyLink if needed. However, most of us should have received this info from our technician when they installed our Internet. Once you do this, your Internet light on your router should turn green (or whatever color it turns to indicate it's receiving a good Internet connection!) 17. Now disconnect the ethernet cord going from port 3 of the switch to your computer. You now need to plug an ethernet cord into your desktop's LAN port and plug the other end into a port on the back of your router (your desktop needs Internet access after all!) 18. (Optional Step) If you want to be able to access the Netgear's admin panel later on in case you ever need to make changes, then plug an Ethernet cord into port 3 on the back of your managed switch, and plug the other end of ethernet cord into a free port on the back of your router. REMINDER!: If you are using a router that does by chance allow you to set a VLAN 201 on the WAN/Internet port (like a lot of Asus routers) don't forget to go and remove that now! Your managed switch will be handling the VLAN 201 tagging from now on :-) YOU'RE DONE! Your $30-40 managed switch is now configured with VLAN 201 so you can now use ANY router with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet (as long as the router supports PPPoE, which most do.) I know this seems like a lengthy process, but it's actually not. I want to say I spent anywhere from 45 minutes - 1 hour tops! I'm not an expert, but I'm also not a novice. If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer! So to wrap it up. What does this work-around provide? It will allow you to use the router of your choice with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet service. You don't have to worry about flashing custom firmwares to routers. You don't have to worry about finding a router that allows you to creat VLANs on the Internet/WAN port, etc. The Netgear managed switch takes care of this! Hope this helps!

Off the wall latency packet loss and jitter

I have been with centrylink before and never had this much trouble before with packet loss and high ping but I I recently started up service again and got the 25 down and 2 up package and to say the least I was pretty satisfied for the first week and then all of a sudden everything took a nose dive. I contacted tech support I believe wednesday night and they wasn't able to get a tech to me till today. The tech had to do some repairs on whatever was going on outside the apartment and then came in to see that the subcontractor that made sure my service was up and running right didn't do a great job with the wiring at the jack plates. wired a bunch of things wrong and created a lot of noise in the line. Now granted I didn't stand over the guy that was here originally at first to get my service up and running or I would have caught the mistakes made but nonetheless it was cleaned up by the tech that was out today and made things better..... well for a while anyways. Here it is 430 am and I am running a ping test to a server I frequent often for gaming and I am having high packet loss 60-90% at the modem and 90-100% at the 5th hop and 100% at the 6th and on another server I frequent I'm getting 60-90% packet loss at the modem and 100% at the 5th hop. I have this from my DSL status page from the modem config, don't know if this helps any: DSL Status Connection Status DSL Downstream: 27.518 Mbps DSL Upstream: 2.207 Mbps DSL Link Link Statistic Status Broadband Mode Setting:Auto Select Broadband Mode Detected:VDSL2 - 8A DSL Link Uptime:2H:58M:45S Retrains:0 Retrains in Last 24 Hours:0 Loss of Power Link Failures:0 Loss of Signal Link Failure:0 Loss of Margin Link Failure:0 Link Train Errors:0 Unavailable Seconds:30 Estimated Loop Length:1180 feet Uncanceled Echo:-232 Transport Mode:PTM Path Parameter:N/A Priority:0 Service Type:PTM - Untagged DSL Power Levels Downstream Upstream SNR 17.1 dB 22.7 dB Attenuation 4.1 dB 0.6 dB Power 2.6 dBm - 8.0 dBm DSL Transport Transport Downstream Upstream Packets: 1389647 1558287 Error Packets: 0 0 24 Hour Usage: 8127.424 Mbits 2389.168 Mbits Total Usage: 8127.424 Mbits 2389.168 Mbits 30 Minute Discarded:0 0 DSL Channel Levels Near End Far End Channel Type: Interleaved Interleaved CRC Errors: 0 0 30 Minute CRC: 0 0 RS FEC Corrections: 1257 0 30 Minute FEC Corrections: 273 0 I understand that those levels are good from what I was told but if that is the case why am I having so many problems? I have attached 2 pingplotter reports to show the type of trouble I have been having, NOTE that it's not just those servers I have these issues with, just every day browsing on the internet is a pain and when I open my browser all my tabs that I use quite frequently are pinned so I don't have to search for them every time I open my browser, the first week I had my service and opened the browser all my pages would load within a few seconds, now it takes several minutes for each of them to load, switching tabs is like pulling teeth from a crocodile..... I have tried flushing the DNS, releasing the IP and renewing it, clearing all my browser history, cache ect. Uninstalled my network driver and software, changed cables, went wireless, rebooting the modem, you name it I tried it.... Can anyone give me an idea of what's going on?

Goodbye and Good Riddance CenturyLink!

I've been a captive Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since 2007. Since that time, I've endured countless outages, bandwidth exhausts, evening high latency, and a multitude of billing issues (I know I'm preaching to the choir here...) Since 2007, I've had two (2!) increases in bandwidth - in late 2007 I was given the ability to go from 5 to 10Mbps, and in 2013 I was able to upgrade to bonded DSL to go from 10 to 20Mbps. I know that I'm actually fortunate with those speeds when it comes to legacy Embarq territory as a huge number are still stuck with less than 10Mbps. Enter West Carolina Tel (https://gigupgreenwood.com) - a local fiber co-op that is headquartered in an adjacent county. Through the grace of the broadband gods, they have begun fiber deployment in our area and recently have begun construction in our neighborhood. They offer symmetrical gigabit speeds with no cap (price list here: http://wcfiber.net/files/documents/042617_GREENWOOD_WCFIBER.pdf). Needless to say, I will be dropping CenturyLink the day my fiber order is placed and is turned on. It will be a phone call that is a long time coming. P.S. If anyone is interested I will document the fiber install with some pictures.

WiFi slower than expected

Just switched from Comcast to CenturyLink VDSL2 bonded. I have an Asus RT-AC68U router (stock firmware) that was connected to the cable modem. Comcast service was 55 down/5 up. Speed tests over wifi were showing 60-65 down and 6-7 up. Now I have the Asus taking care of PPPOE and connected to the Actiontec C1900A which is in bridge mode untagged (wifi is off). Speeds are supposed to be 80/10. Over ethernet I get 78-80 down and 9-10 up so I know I'm getting advertised speeds. However, when I connect via wifi and run a speed test I get anywhere from 25-60 down and 9-10 up. I would normally chalk this up to interference but Comcast was consistently showing advertised speeds over wifi. Plus the upload speeds over ethernet and wifi stay around 9-10 so I'd expect it to be lower if it was interference related. It's just the download speeds that are so far off. The only thing that has changed is the router handling PPPOE. Is this expected behavior or is there some way to get better speeds over wifi?

So, My house has a centralized location for network connections. It runs through some finished space but is loose within that space except confined by the size of the holes through some joists. The CAT was obviously run without the connectors in place. Does anyone know if centurylink has internal drops that have a minimal/removable connector that can be replaced before it goes into the ONT?

Price for Life Customers: Do you lose your phone number?

Right now I have CenturyLink DSL as well as pots that I don't really use. I want to upgrade to the new price for life but I want to Port my phone number to Google. However, the current plans go up $10 starting Wednesday so I would like to get into it tomorrow. I would like to keep my phone number if I can to Port it, but I don't think that's possible with just over 24 hours remaining unless you never actually lose the number and it stays on your DSL only account. Did other customers lose their phone number when upgrading or does it still stay tied to your account?

DSL speed tier, cap, and fee questions

Greetings, Currently debating on switching to centurylink dsl (no phone line) in order to cut costs and was wondering... Does anybody knew what the upload is for the 10mbps and 25mbps speed tiers are? Are they still enforcing caps on DSL in Florida and what the caps are? Also are there any hidden fees I should be should be on the lookout for? So far it seems like theres a $10 modem lease fee, and a $99 install fee if you cant do self install but ive never had any service with centuylink, will they still let me do self install? The way I see if theres a $99 one time fee I probably wont even try it. If the $45 a month somehow turns into $70 after fees and taxes then its not worth it either. Theres also no way I want to get involved in anything requiring a contract or termination fees.
