Hi all,
I'm currently paying too much to Comcast for 55Mbps plus voice service. I'm considering the Centurylink $45 price for life option and an Obihai phone device.
I'm in the St. Paul MN (Oakdale) area. Until recently, Centurylink's website only offered me 20Mbps (sometimes only 12). Now the website says I qualify for 40Mbps. (There's a plate in my yard in the ground that says Centurylink fiber... why can't I have that???)
Anyway, what would the upload speed be that goes with the 40 service? I'm guessing that will be two 20 lines bonded together? Is that a bad thing? Should I notice much difference from Comcast's 55 service?
Thanks in advance!

Can someone explain the 100/50 Mbps plan to me?
Moving into a new house in November (new build) which has a CenturyLink GPON terminal in a pedestal in my back yard. My new address isn't on their website yet, but when I call they tell me that 100/50 Mbps "fiber" is available.
My question is if anyone else who might have this service can confirm if it is indeed true fiber, or some type of short run bonded DSL? I'm leaning DSL because of the down speeds, but 50 Mbps seems like a lot of upstream for a DSL line. They're telling me I can buy or lease a modem, but in my experience with FiOS fiber utilizes some type of business class router or simple ONT, is this not the case with CenturyLink? If so, what type of device/brand/model am I looking at? (Prefer to buy my own equipment).
Just hoping for some clarification. I'm currently using Comcast and paying too much for 200/10 with data caps, and want CenturyLink 1 Gbps service eventually, but I'm wondering if I should just stick it out a little longer with Comcast until CenturyLink figures out my address (completely brand new neighborhood, I'll be like the 2nd or 3rd person moving in).
TIA

[CenturyTel] Possible upgrade in my area - Montello, WI
I recently noticed a company trenching cable in my area. They stated they were running copper for Centurytel. I called Centurytel to see if they were upgrading this area and the local manager stated they were installing exchange boxes in the area that would be capable of 40 mbps. I currently have 6/.4 I noticed today that this box (see attached picture) was installed 880 meters from my house. I'm wondering if this is the exchange box? I'm also wondering how this will increase speed? I don't believe they ran fiber optic cable but near the exchange box, the letter "FO" is lines across the road. I'm wondering if a fiber optic cable already runs past where they put this box. I also noticed they trenched the new copper line in the ditch but did not appear to run any new lines to the telephone boxes that line the ditch. Do they do this later or isn't it required. If the exchange box is capable of 40 mbps is this VDSL? I know I am currently on ADSL2+. I'm wondering what I could expect for download and upload speed at 880 meters away? Thanks for any answers you can provide. Numerous people in this area have been begging for upgraded internet for years.

CenturyLink Support Staff: Latency
I have tried the CenturyLink online chat for the last 30 days and nothing seems to be changing (They say the latency below is acceptable), so I though it was worth trying to post here to see if CenturyLink could address the extremely elevated latency issued (+1000ms) at their first hop for my DSL connection:

Clawing my way to faster speeds
I've just gotten bonded pair VDSL+ and my speeds have gone from 14/1 (single line) to 12/2. When making the "upgrade" arrangements, I was told that the 20/2 that I had been offered a couple of months ago was no longer available. Attenuation figures indicate that both lines are good to 12 so this would seem to be some kind of soft limitation by CL. When I put my address into the CL Business website, I see that 20/2 IS available to me.
Any suggestions on how to work the CL system to get the speeds that were originally offered? Chat, phone, email? What is the best channel? Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Awful YouTube Connection - Fiber 1 Gigabit
As the title says, I am getting a terrible connection to YouTube with my new as of 5 days ago FTTH 1Gbps connection. It is constant buffering right now. Is anyone else also getting terrible connection to YouTube, at least right now?
Am in Portland, OR.

30 Minute Discarded Upstream
Have a DSL circuit that is reporting some strange behaviors, and assuming the answer is saturation of 'Upstream' bandwidth--however want to get feedback/opinions on whether it may be something else.
Assuming that the 'Upstream Discarded' is actually just the inability for the circuit to keep up with the demand and is retransmitting and queueing the data.
Image 1: Baseline circuit information after resetting counters.
Image 2: Initial usage information after resetting counters.
Image 3: Updated usage information after ~10 minutes.
Would appreciate any feedback on whether this has been seen before on a DSL circuit and if my assumption is correct.
Thanks.

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?
Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area?
Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line.
Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe?
Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

Choosing between Technicolor C1100T and Actiontec C1900A
Hello friends, I’ve ended up with two modems and need to send one back. I have 100/10 VDSL single line (not bonded). I’m using a separate router, Tmobile cellspot, so the wireless capabilities are not of concern.
My main concern is that some CenturyLink people I talk with say I need a modem that handles vectoring and some say I don’t. The c1900a is hooked up now and from the GUI says it’s getting 107. Any reason to go with the technicolor C1100T, which can support vectoring? Thanks

Swapping to prepaid pricing
So I currently pay 85 a month for gigabit and want to switch over to the 75 dollar prepaid price for life. It says it's online only. Aside from ordering new service online is there any way to get my account switched over to the 75 dollar prepaid pricing. Customer service so far has been very unhelpful and lacking.

[Embarq] Best modem for rural area ex-Embarq?
I've had a 2Wire 2701HG-S, Westel 7500, and now a Actiontec PK5001A. I'm looking for the most stable and fast modem for my area. I don't care about the routing or wifi. I simply want to put it in Bridge mode and use my pfSense router. This is what I'm currently doing with the PK5001A. I'm not so pleased with the performance of the Actiontec. Lots of re-syncs, CRCs, sometimes it'll re-sync lower and stay there. It used to sync fastpath now it ONLY syncs interleaved, yet I still see 7ms first hop. The Westell was the worst, awful, and the firmware was so flakey.
I loved my 2Wire, problem is it doesn't seem to have a true bridge mode, and is also no longer "supported by CenturyLink". I know it'll still work, they just frown on it. The 2Wire was by far the most stable and held sync, plus always synced fastpath too. These other two modems are so awful keeping sync.. Everynight I'll have huge latency spikes. Not to mention the SNR of the Actiontec is so low, I've seen it at 9 before. Cheap garbage..
What's the most stable and fast modem for ADSL2+ Embarq rural areas? I'm in Ohio and I'm not sure how to pull DSLAM vendor info from the PK5001A, looked around in telnet, but from my 2Wire back in November 2016 it was this,
Protocol: G.DMT2+ Annex A
DSL Channel: Fast
DSLAM: Country: {0xB5} Vendor: {IFTN} Specific: {0xFB70}
ATM PVC Info: 8/35
ATM Encapsulation: LLC
So looks like Infenion. I'm not sure if it has changed in a year, I would guess not.
I hear the Zyxel's are really stable, I was looking at the C1100Z? Not sure how good the modem in it is, or how well it bonds with IFTN dslam chipsets?
I know the good old 660's are ideal, but they are "No longer supported". I really wish CenturyLink would give us a modem only option that is rock solid in quality. heh, one can dream. Or I could buy a non-centurylink modem like a Netgear or something, but idk which would be the most stable and sync best.. I just want some input from others what is the most stable. Like I said, I'm rural so no bonding, or VDSL available to me.
I'm about ~1.3 miles from the remote DSLAM on 10Mbps, I want something that can hold onto sync with such a loop length. The 2Wire did great...

Prepaid Price for Life Internet for $45 - anyone tried this?
I currently pay $48.94 per month for 40Mbps down/20Mbps up with Centurylink. This is a promotional price that will expire in a few months.
However, it looks like Centurylink is running a promotion for prepaid internet for $45/month. It looks like I can get 60 down/30 up for this price (my address does qualify for this speed).
Has anyone converted their postpaid account to a prepaid account to take advantage of this? Are there any downsides to it?

Why is my CenturyLink DSL out again (East Texas)?
Can someone tell me what the issue is now? Calling tech support does nothing. They aren't aware of an outage. They want to troubleshoot despite my informing them that friends and relatives in the area are experiencing the same problem.
My Zyxel modem has a alternating red/green blinking internet light with all the other lights working appropriately. Voice works. Rebooting does nothing. Friends/relatives in the area are experiencing the same issue. When I tell tech support this, they have to follow a script, I guess and make me jump through hoops. I wish there was a way to just report an outage and get some feedback as to the nature of the issue.

Moving with DirecTV/CenturyLink contract
I have to move. My landlord wants to move back into this house when my lease expires at the end of the month. I currently have a contract with CenturyLink/DirecTV because of a deal I got. My problem is this:
I am moving to a location that only has up to 1.5mbps speed according to CenturyLink's ordering page. That is totally too little bandwidth for my needs. Is this enough of a reason to be able to break the CenturyLink side of the contract without a ETF? I currently have 20mbps Internet and it is barely enough for what I need. I want to keep DirecTV.

Did you opt out?
Does this mean we're giving up our right to complain to the FCC besides the other stuff?
The Revised High‐Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement has been updated from your previous agreement with CenturyLink primarily with regard to: (1) how the agreement can be amended in the future, and (2) the mandatory arbitration procedures that must be used (rather than using lawsuits, jury trials, or class actions) in any disputes between CenturyLink and you. There are other changes as well. Please read the entire Revised High‐Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement carefully to determine if the changes in the Revised HSI Agreement are right for you.
