CenturyLink fiber disaster

I was one of the earliest fiber customers in my area, at least according to the original installer. I had 40/20 service that ran flawlessly until 9/11/17. The internet service suddenly stopped working in the afternoon. I called support and they said they saw the problem and would call back shortly to make sure it was fixed. 5 hours later no one had called and I went to bed. I called back Tuesday and was told it was working. It was not. After talking to multiple people at CenturyLink they decided that one of there systems had erroneously generated a disconnect order which had not fully completely processed leaving inconsistent status. They say the only way to fix it is to issue another disconnect order and a new service order. This new order is required to include a new "modem" (router) as the old one is not adequate. It also requires a technician to do a professional install. I try in vain to explain I don't need a technician just turn the service back on. She says she can't process the order without the "modem" and the installer. I give up and say fine. Then she tells me the soonest thee can come out is today. We agree on a window between noon and six pm. I work nights. I got up this morning and sat by my front door from 11am until about 3 when I checked my email using my phone (difficult with my vision problems). I see an email sent at 10:21am from CenturyLink saying they couldn't complete my order because no adult was home and that the tech left a tag on the door to explain. This sent before the appointment Windows and there was no tag. I called back and was told eventually that the tech was never dispatched due to an internal system problem. They say the next available date is 9/21/2017. Now anybody who has this service knows that their is nothing that actually needs to be done on the customer premises with an existing fiber install. There is no junction box, the fiber is connected to the ONT, the router is plugged into lan port 4. The part that is screwed up is at the central office. I have talked till I'm hoarse for hours and no one at CenturyLink seems to have a clue or care. The last representative actually hung up on me. Tomorrow I am calling the state utility commission.

The complete error is: Sep 15 08:00:08 localhost postfix/smtp[25057]: 16AE21000D17: to=, relay=smtp.embarqmail.com[206.152.134.66]:587, delay=1.5, delays=0.95/0.43/0.1/0, dsn=4.3.4, status=deferred (host smtp.embarqmail.com[206.152.134.66] refused to talk to me: I see this either when sending from my MUA or when postfix is sending out cronjob notifications to me. It doesn't happen every time a message is sent. This has been going on for maybe two weeks or so. The deferred messages eventually do go out but it may be minutes or hours before they do. Anyone with ideas on why?

Need for speed

I live in a rural area in NC, but am only 1.5 mi from the remote phone office, and currently am maxed out at 10Mb down / 768k up load speeds. I have asked about bonded DSL thru the CenturyLink support, but they don't have any info on planned upgrades, or when Bonded DSL might be available. Is there somewhere I can find out any plans for upgrades in my area? But I am almost afraid it will be like this post: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29482393-10meg-to-25-I-think-I-screwed-up

Gigabit install

So I'm setup for a fiber install here within the next 2 weeks. Should I be concerned that I don't have the fiber ran outside yet? Our lines are underground here so I wasn't sure on the time frame for the outside work to be done prior to installation. Does Centurylink provide battery backup for the ONT? Also does anyone know what router they are currently using for the gigabit service? Also I'm assuming you can still use your own router correct? Is the CTL provided router needed between the ONT and your own router? Thanks in advance for the help.

Yesterday, I spent an hour and a half on the Live Chat with CenturyLink trying to lower my WiFi prices. For the last 3 years, I've been paying $55 a month for 12Mbps, and last month, it suddenly shot up to $90. This makes no sense for a few reasons; first of which is how much I'm paying for such a small amount. The other problem is the offer I was in wasn't a limited time agreement. It was supposed to be a price for life. Even worse is the fact I wasn't even getting 12Mbps; I was getting more like 9. Anyway, I asked them about a lot of stuff, until they eventually said they could do 20Mbps for $45, which was the deal they were advertising on their site. I was glad we had finally got somewhere, but I was confused by them offering me the base price, especially after all my issues with their service. I asked if they could lower it, and they said they actually COULDN'T ever change the price of anything, because the system automatically sets the price. This sounded like complete BS, but by that point I was too tired to argue anymore, so I just went ahead and got the 20Mbps. Do you think they were telling the truth? What would you have done differently?

How to extend or replace fiber from box to ONT

Hi im hoping someone can help me. After the install of gigabit fiber i kind of want to move the ONT. At the moment a fiber line is going from the side of my house where the line comes out of the ground to the ONT which is in a bedroom. I kind of want to move it a few rooms over to my server room, the tech at the time said he was unable to do that. Now i can either replace the cable from box -> ONT or what would be much easier is if i can take the cable out of the ONT and extend it inside the house through attic to the room. Is this doable? and if so what kind of cables / connector would i need?

Century Link Chicago Peering Issues causing 1G Fiber to be slow

Two months ago I switched from Charter 65/5 to Century link 1gig residential service. Since then I've experienced random slowdowns which I never experienced with my previous provider. Sometimes it is slow page load, sometimes it is a video loading slowly at a low resolution. I now believe Century link has some major peering problems in Chicago which are affecting Minneapolis customers. Using a program called ping plotter, a normal connection to my trading account at (interactive brokers) is 14ms, but during peak times this jumps to 100ms: [att=1] The latency is introduced at the 6th hop 63.146.27.18, using an arin lookup this is a CenturyLink owned IP, which appears to be used to peer with level 3 in Chicago. A lot of my traffic goes through this peer, including a VPN to my office in Minneapolis. Looking at a week time scale, this slowdown happens every single night! [att=2] Ping plotter can detect route changes but with these examples, the route does not change. A network is only as good as its weakest link, if Century Link has major peering problems then my 1gig fiber seems worthless. How would you go about bringing this to the attention of CenturyLink? Does anyone have a good contact for them or perhaps Level 3?

My comments on Centurylink policies and offers

I hope that people who run Centurylink read this and think about it. I live 250ft from a DSLAM fed by high capacity fiber: 1) I am on 40/20 now. If I want to upgrade to 60mbps, only 5mbps upload is available. This is the only upgrade option if I don't want CL tech to come to install. 2) CL treats customers like all of them are idiot, believing that only their techs can do installation of 80mbps and up correctly. Actually a lot of their customers are well qualified and capable of doing self installation of the bonded pairs. There should be an option for self-installation for those who can do it. CL could waive all of its responsibilities beyond the NID just like in case of the phone. 3) The new promotion seems to be a move in the right direction, but many policies are still frustrating customers and CL has no clear benefits from the practice. I have cable available up to 1gbps, but want to stay with CL for some legacy reasons.

Major problem with email at CenturyLink, and they're not telling..

Email can't be used with 3rd party email client (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.). Retrieving emails can't be done because you get a security error indicating certification has expired. [att=1] Many people claiming for days this has been a problem that has yet to be resolved. For example: http://downdetector.com/status/centurylink/news/154227-problems-at-centurylink-3 I thought maybe the problem was the email server names were being changed, but tech support told me no. All they said was that techs are doing maintenance to email servers. For more than three days?

New CL customer not sure about speed issue

I signed up for 100/10 service and while the installation and setup was painless the speeds are just wrong. 1. First, they only set me up for 80/10 even though I signed up for 100/10. 2. Speedtest to CenturyLink only showed 25mbit downstream. 3. Called up install Tech and told him I signed up for 100/10 and he said he would be able to fix it without access. 4. I see the provisioning changed since modem now reports. -> DSL1:38mbit DSL2:45mbit 5. Still only getting 25-28mbit download speed To make things even fun it seems I am a "CenturyLink Simple" customer which means whenever I call in I need to be transferred because normal CS reps do not have access to my information. "I can do some basic troubleshooting of CenturyLink Simple accounts but I can't make changes." Help CenturyLink Overbilling Us

In June we moved in to our new house and I received "welcome to neighborhood" offer from centurylink 25mbps ADSL for $34.95/month with one year contract. Fast forward to September, I noticed CenturyLink has been billing our credit card $70.50 a month since June! After spending hours on the phone, they play dumb and say they don't offer any plans for $34.95, the best they can do is put me on $45 a month starting next month. I'm about to file chargeback for fraudulent charges. This is plain consumer fraud, bait and switch tactic CenturyLink is practicing. Anyone else having similar issues?

C1000A + Asus RT-AC66U B1 w/merlin fw

Hello again, For years people have told me our internet would perform better if I would put the C1000A into bridge mode and get ourselves a real router. Well I finally got a brand new RT-AC66U B1 (November 2016 build date on bottom sticker) and flashed the latest Merlin (380.68_2) onto it. The Network feels much more solid but the Internet has a serious hesitation at times, but not all times. Somedays I am actually greeted with a super fast connection, but others its really bad hesitation. This did NOT happen with the Internet before the new router. The only problem I can see with the C1000A was needing constant rebooting to get wifi working, but Ethernet devices ran great 24/7. It's as if the new setup is trying to figure out what I am asking it to do, like a communication barrier or something. Anyway the Internet immediately took a nose dive in performance, not the actual speeds, but some sort of latency issue is now happening. Speed test shows about the same up/dn and the latency went from 21 to 23 ms, but many sites, like YouTube (its a mixed bag really) now needs about 5 seconds to do what I call "thinking about it" before anything actually happens. Yes it's a blank page for about 5 seconds then suddenly full speeds. If I remove the router and put back the C1000A all websites and youtube videos start loading immediately. Its as if these two devices need to agree upon something before activity can actually occur. Maybe I did not bridge it correctly? This is my initial guess, but as easy as it is to bridge I just don't see how this can be the case. Or, is the RT-AC66U B1 a known problem for CL? What should be my next step? I think I should try a factory reset on the C1000A, then go in and try setting it to bridge mode again? Thanks for any advice you can give me. Best Regards Rod P.S. Also, I removed all the old cat5e cables and built my own CAT6 cables because I like neat setups with proper lengths. All cables tested OK using a normal RJ45 cable tester, the kind that just shows you green lights. Can CAT6 cabling be the issue?

Can someone identify what this box is - DSL Exchange box?

Centurylink has recently ran fiber optic cables in a ditch near my house and I have been trying to get answers as to whether I will see upgraded internet speeds in my area but can't get answers. The fiber optic cables were run to what I believe are exchange boxes about 1.1 miles from my house where I assume they will switch to copper to houses. The boxes I observed had several cabinets and a power meter installed next to them. I just noticed however that they installed a box only 50 yards from my house. I'm hoping it is also some type of exchange box that will give me faster internet but I'm not sure. Can someone identify what this box is? If it's not a DSLAM do you think I will see faster internet from the DSLAM 1.1 miles from my house? I currently have 6/.4 service. Thanks, Joe

How does CenturyLink address provisioning work?

Trying to order service for a resident's room in a nursing home. Other rooms are listed at shop.centurylink.com but this room is not. If I call in or chat, reps say room has been added and they can sell me service--at a higher price than the online price. One rep reported, "[Address Management] said what happened is that the address is new in our system and techs have not completed the services at the terminal." What does that mean? Does a technician have to install service in that room before that room shows up in the Internet offering? Or will it show up automatically on the web site in a few days?
