New Fiber Lines in my Area How Long Before I get my Higher Speeds?

$

The contractor for Centurylink has been installing fiber line (the big orange spools) on my highway and most of the county for the past six months. I currently only have 1.5 Mb\s DSL. Two Centuylink techs have told me they are rolling out 10 Mb\s to the area but no one can give me a time as when the job will be done. From what I can tell, the physical part of burying and connecting the line seems to be done or very close to it. Does anyone have any experience as to how long the whole process takes? I can't get anyone from Centurylink to tell me squat or give me a local contact who would. This slow speed is killing me and I'm very anxious for anything faster.

[CenturyTel] Actiontec 2000A Questions/Alternatives

It seems my CL-branded Actiontec 2000A is on its way out. Specifically, the modem will "crash" in that I will not be able to access the control panel, and some devices--such as my Roku--will no longer connect to the internet. Yet, weirdly enough, other devices will still be able to connect and while one of the ethernet ports seems to be connecting and disconnecting every few minutes, nothing else indicates the connection is lost. Once this happens the only way to access the control panel is to power cycle the modem. When I called Centurylink this evening I was told that the only option was for me to buy a new modem because my modem is "not compatible" with my service (40/5 Mbps), even though it is the one they installed with the service several years ago. When I stated that the modem appeared to be broken, not simply incompatible, the person said it didn't matter and I would still have to buy (or lease) a new modem from them. I am planning to speak with customer service on Monday, but in the meantime I figured I would ask: 1. Has anyone had a similar "crashing" problem? 2. If so, is it done or is there something else I could try? 3. If it is done, and I have to buy another modem (which is ridiculous since I didn't buy this one), are there recommendations for better (cheaper) options than what they offer? (Honestly, it doesn't have to be a "super" modem. The line comes into the house in the basement. I use a better wifi router on the main floor to get reception anyway.) Thank you.

[CenturyTel] Configure C1100Z to work as Wireless AP with Netgear switch

Converted from DSL to fiber. Can the C1100Z be configured to act as WAP? I turned off DHCP, but if I connect modem to new switch (LAN-LAN ethernet) it appears to conflict. All the switch ethernet internet connectivity is lost but the wireless works through the modem and through the new switch. If I disconnect the modem, the fiber and new switch work fine.

C2100Z, static IPs and port forwarding

I've got rules in my new C2100Z (fiber "modem" as in ethernet router/AP) to forward ports 80 and 25, as I did on my old DSL modem. 80 gets through, 25 does not. Support insists they're not blocking 25. Anyone have a similar problem with either this device or switching to fiber from DSL?

VDSL and ADSL limitations based on distance or fubar?

Long story short here. Im looking at a neighborhood that has both VDSL and ADSL services available, and i determine this by using the website and waiting for the modem options after choosing a package, normally if the address is bound to ADSL, you have an option to provide a modem, and the prices usually net -$10 a month. In example the house im looking at offers 20/2 on bonded pair ADSL, but my neighbor can get 20M on a single VDSL. Why must CTL be so jacked up lol Keep in mind im in a ex/Embarq territory.

Surrounded by Fiber 1 block away in Seattle, but not available?

Trying to help a friend get gigabit from Centurylink, but it seems it is not available according to the prequal tools. I've mapped out DSL/Fiber coverage around the location (on Whitman Ave N halfway between 107th & 105th), and it seems there is fiber a few hundred feet down the block on the corner of 105th & Whitman Ave N, and a block over to the east and northeast. Is there any way to push through an order considering its available just down the block, a few hundred feet away? Here is the Seattle cable franchise map for reference, seems to be an optimistic version of CL fiber coverage. Map Key: Not in CL prequal DB = Red Phone Service Only = Black/Grey 1.5Mbps to 12Mbps DSL = Orange 20Mbps DSL = Yellow 40Mbps DSL = Purple Fiber = Blue Edits: Added franchise map, DSLReports doesn't support bbcode colors :(

Connection issues after Q1000 vectoring firmware update.

Hey guys, last week I received notice that my modem firmware needed to be updated to support the vectoring rollout in my area. I believe it was going to roll out on the 14th. Anyway, I performed the update on Thursday of last week. A couple days ago I noticed my internet drops out all the time. I'm using PFSense 2.3.3-RELEASE-p1 for my router with my Actiontec Q1000 in transparent bridge mode, on 40/20 VDSL. I had to reset the modem to perform the firmware update (since the webUI isn't useable in bridge mode) and then set it back to bridge. In my PFSense logs I'm seeing "LCP: peer not responding to echo requests" and then the PPPoE connection is closed. Within a couple minutes it will reconnect. This can happen anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours apart. I contacted CenturyLink and they said they're not seeing any issues on the line and that I should replace my modem. As I own my modem, I'd rather not do this if it's not necessary. My questions are thus: Are there any troubleshooting steps I could take? To me this sounds like either a line noise or modem issue, but I'm not super fluent in DSL. Thanks!

[Qwest] Do I have two lines?

So a looong time ago - back in the dialup days, I remember we had a 2nd phone line so we could still talk on the phone and be on the internet. Would that mean that I technically have two physical lines coming into my house (future bonding?), or did they do some trickery with a single line to create two phone lines?

They are about to have vdsl go live in my area. I spoke with the engineer installing the equipment in the cabinet and he said I should be able to receive 80mbps with bonding and then asked what type of lines did I have? I told him I'm not sure.. anyways, attached is from inside the box.

Switching fiber from PPPoE to IPoE?

$

Has anyone ever tried to get centurylink to switch the WAN connection from PPPoE to IPoE without ordering prism tv? I have gigabit fiber and unfortunately pfsense (freebsd) isn't able to make use of queues when processing inbound traffic. This results in a maximum of ~750mbps with my Atom C2758 based router. This isn't exactly a problem :) since it's pretty rare I'm even able to saturate that, but the geek in me would like to see ~940mbps :) Wondering if anyone's tried to contact them to see if they'll switch my provisioning or any suggestions of how to do it? I know they don't support byo routers so but when I first signed up for fiber i got a great support guy that told me exactly what i needed to do to use my own router (VLAN tag, and told me to make sure to get the PPPoE credentials from the installer since the zyzel C1100Z apparently can't unmask the password) so that was pretty surprising :)

Resign up with centurylink after bad deal a few years ago.

Anyone know if it's possiable to sign up after a few year break under my wife's name. Long story short I hit data caps and being centueylink has easement in my property for switching station for half the county I worked with local business managers to try and resolve it and thought we did but then got crazy bills so cancelled and went with Comcast. Want to go back for a bit being fiber is in now and contract is up on Comcast so want to cancell Comcast for a bit to be able I sign up latter as new customer and get discounts. Ps I owe them 750. I called them and told them I have all the documentation from the last time around and I have shit the door to the switching station several times when they leave it open and what not but he said well u would need to pay your 750 outstanding bill from 5 years ago when they screwed me

CenturyLink plant rotting, no one seems to care

I've tried to call CenturyLink but since I'm not a customer they won't even take my call. Their plant is rotting away in my neighborhood. Dozen peds are open with the covers missing or laying next to it under 2-3 years worth of weeds. This ped is completely snapped off, and sits in a puddle of water. http://imgur.com/a/qTSLh If anyone has a contact email address for someone at CenturyLink who cares, I would forward this to them along with the address. We are lucky, we have 2 cable providers. CenturyLink has started offering 40 meg service in my neighborhood. I told one of the door to door guys about the rotting plant, and he said those weren't theirs. Wouldn't even look into it further. LOL. You can see the 2 cable providers on the other side of the sidewalk. The other box is electric service. Clearly this ped is CL.

[CenturyTel] Any upgrades going on in Eastern Kansas area?

$

I've been a CenturyLink customer for about 10 years now, and I think I've about hit my limit for how much longer I'm going to wait for them to upgrade. I'm currently at 3 meg down, .5 up, same speed I've been at for 10 years now (about 20 minutes southwest of KC). I've tried calling Centurylink, I've tried chatting with them online, I've tried their answer service, and not once have I ever gotten an answer on whether my area is going to be upgraded ever. So I'm asking the community if they know anything about the Eastern Kansas area and possible upgrades happening. The 3 meg wasn't really too bad of an issue until the Xbox One/Ipad/Iphone came out and started downloading patches all the time, which basically flatlines everyone else in the house randomly when it occurs. My wife is also trying to stream her shows and is constantly having issues with watching 1/2 the show then some device (phone, ipad, computer, etc) starts updating and killing her show, a very frustration thing for her (and in turn for me, who has to try and fix it all the time). If there are no plans for upgrades, I've heard that possibly AT&T has an unlimited wireless plan that might work? Cost is not an object here, we're already paying $85 for our current centurylink connection (it's combined with home phone which we never use...we were going to drop the phone but I was told by their representative that the DSL would go up just as much as the bundle was saving us, so no point). Thanks for any information you have. A very frustrated user here, lol.

CenturyLink Connection Terrible in my Area

Hi, So I've been using CenturyLink for a while now, and I've always been aware of these problem, but just kind of brushed them under the rug. Then they got a lot worse. So we pay for 12mbps downstream, and the modem has a little window that shows how much is going into the modem. I've never seen it exceed 8.2mbps downstream and 0.62 upstream. Now this is where it gets confusing. Doing a wired test on my gaming pc it shows 0.64mbps downstream and anywhere from 0.32mbps to 2.53mbps upstream, while fluctuating violently. My ping is usually decent, from 31 to 71. Recently, my internet rates died, going 0.04mbps to 0.34mbps downstream and staying about the same upstream. My ping skyrocketed to thousands. This all happened within a couple hours. After a couple days, my speed tests went back up to normal, however I'm still getting the same crappy connection. Before this I could stream 1080p youtube with no interruptions. Now I get frequent buffers on 144p. I haven't tried calling century link yet because they're usually useless. I've had technicians come out several times. Most of which just did the same stuff I've been doing. Rebooting the modem, plugging it into the test socket. Useless to me. One technician looked at my NID device and and saw all the wires were cut, and fixed that. But this was months ago. Any suggestions? Neil

Trying to use 3rd Party router on Prism Gigabit

Hi guys! Joined the forum just so I could seek help. Recently got fiber installed and wanted to my own router. RT-AC68U. Using the many tutorials here, I thought all would go well. Nothing seems to be working for me. I first switched the router to use PPPoE. I called CenturyLink to get those credentials, and those do not seem to authenticate at all. I did notice that the C2100z they provided used IPoE. I then tried following a different tutorial where you just need to plug in the Ethernet from the ONT and set up VLAN tagging. Still no luck. I am going crazy here trying to figure out what is going on. My questions to you guys is... 1.) Did they provide me with the wrong PPPoE credentials? I notice a lot of people saying theirs ends in @qwest.net. Support told me this was not needed. 2.) Because I have prism TV and it uses IPoE, do I need to do anything different? Thank You for all suggestions and help. This is really making me lose my mind!

Hot Weather Killing Internet Lines?

I continue to have issues with my CenturyLink DSL service. It was working wonderfully through the winter but now that the temperatures have gotten above 80 I have started to experience trouble again. My internet kept dropping today and it is causing a major headache. If the lines can't stand 80, I am scared what kind of summer I am in for when they get above 100. I've e-mailed tech support but I am sure they are going to give me the runaround. Any advice or insight is appreciated.

CenturyLink random disconnects at night

I have 12mbps CenturyLink DSL, and an Actiontec Q1000 modem. For the six weeks or so I've been having an issue with my DSL connection dropping. But it only drops at night, generally between 11:00pm and 2:00am or so, local time. It happens probably four or five nights a week. When it happens, it'll drop after every 2 or 3 minutes, each time requiring a modem restart. Sometimes only happens once or twice, but sometimes it might go on for an hour and a half, then generally return to normal again. Often, upon a modem restart it will reconnect at a lower speed (anywhere from 0.5mbps to 8mbps) requiring an additional restart to get it to connect at proper speeds. For a time, it was even stuck at a maximum of 8mbps no matter how many times I restarted it (more about that later). I have no issues whatsoever during the daytime. This only happens at night. I have contacted CenturyLink. First they blamed the issue on "line improvements" and said the issue would resolve itself after seven days. Of course it did not, so after seven days I contacted them again, and they sent out a technician. He blamed the issue on an old second line that was still tied in to my box (from the 56K days before DSL was available where I live), and proceeded to remove it, and said it was fixed. It was not. The problems resumed that very night after he left. He was, however, able to resolve the issue with the modem only connecting at 8mbps. Apparently, that issue was on CenturyLink's end, or so he said. I'm at wits end, here. It doesn't make sense that this kind of problem would only happen at night, does it? I live in a very rural area, so it's not like night-time congestion could be the cause. I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only person in this part of the county even using DSL at night. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on, or how I might resolve this issue? Thanks!

Gigabit slower download than upload

Recently picked up symmetrical Gbps service from CenturyLink here in Holly Springs, NC. It is a recent service addition as we have only had 100/50 as the highest tier. After a few weeks of tests and calls, my speeds typically are 675-750 down but consistently 910+ upload. I have never hit over 750 down. CL has also tested and seen the same directly connected to the ONT on the house. They came out again today and said they will look further into and get back to me. They say programming, fiber quality and light quality is all good. Not sure where the bottleneck for the download is. I have seen speed tests in other towns where they can show 900+ parity between DL/UL but cannot seem to ever see that here. Anyone else have similar issues? We do not use a VLAN setup here as I have seen elsewhere. It is straight from the ONT to my home router using DHCP to pick up my WAN IP.
