[Qwest] Upgrading speed - new improved line stats

$

I've had 1.5Mbit DSL for years now in my area (Qwest). Up until recently on the web site they showed the max speed available as being 3 Mbit, and the last time I called them the CSR said I'd lose out on my upload speeds if I changed to 3Mbit(from 800kbit to 500). I hadn't checked in a couple months, but yesterday I saw that they're offering 12mbit service at my address if I just type in my address and 7mbit if I login with my account. I checked the DSL line stats and the SNR values have changed from 32/11 to 39/18 so they upgraded something somewhere. Attenuation and power are unchanged at 38/26 and 16.8/12.5dBm. Running "adslctl info" on the modem says that my max downstream rate should be 8864 Kbps, and upstream of 1216Kbps. Are these numbers reasonable for a 7Mbit connection? How should I go about contacting Centurylink to update my speed? I'm currently on the old 'price for life' plan so any change will terminate that. Is calling them, going into a store, or using the online chat the best method to negotiate a new monthly payment and speed? I use a 3rd party ISP for my actual internet provider, can I keep them? Or will I be forced over to centurylink.net?

[CenturyTel] Will I regret buying a ZyXEL C1100Z from CenturyLink?

I have a primitive CenturyLink 7Mbps T1.413 ADSL connection that CL has no plans to upgrade! Since I don't have much bandwidth to work-with, my goal is to max-out my connection speed! I'm far enough away from the CO that I'm not going to hit 7168Kbps, but I'll take what I can get! For the past 6 months, I used a CenturyLink-branded Actiontec C1000A that has been gradually slowing down. For two months, this modem ran at 7072Kbps downstream, but now the best that it can do is 6592Kbps. Two years ago, I purchased a ZyXEL PK5001Z from CL, but it actually runs slower than the C1000A! When I have bad results with a product, I usually do my best to steer clear of the manufacturer in the future, which rules-out Actiontec and ZyXEL. I found a handy chart in my CL account that lists the modems that CL supports! One of the supported modem manufacturers that I haven't tried is Technicolor. I tried to find a Technicolor C2100T online, but it appears that this modem isn't manufactured anymore! Aw, shucks! :( This morning I went to a CL store to see what modems they are offering. The only choice is the ZyXEL C1100Z. I pointed-out to the the sales woman that I had bad luck with my PK50001Z, but she replied that I can return the new modem within 30 days, no questions asked! So I broke my rule and dropped $99.99 for a C1100Z! After I got home, I checked the reviews for this modem and they are favorable. So I went ahead and connected and configured the modem, which is a snap to do! This modem is a 9" tall mini-tower that runs much cooler than my Actiontec C1000A does! During prime time, the modem connected at 6880/896Kbps, which my C1000A can't do! I might be able to get this modem to sync at a faster speed early in the morning. I'm not an intensive wifi user, but my Dell laptop connects at 72Mbps, which is the fastest speed that it supports. So far, this looks like a good decision! :) What do you think? DeepDiver

New Fiber Lines in my Area How Long Before I get my Higher Speeds?

The contractor for Centurylink has been installing fiber line (the big orange spools) on my highway and most of the county for the past six months. I currently only have 1.5 Mb\s DSL. Two Centuylink techs have told me they are rolling out 10 Mb\s to the area but no one can give me a time as when the job will be done. From what I can tell, the physical part of burying and connecting the line seems to be done or very close to it. Does anyone have any experience as to how long the whole process takes? I can't get anyone from Centurylink to tell me squat or give me a local contact who would. This slow speed is killing me and I'm very anxious for anything faster.

Anyone have any success avoiding an ETF for poor service

We signed up 2 months ago, and it was ok for the first month, but for the last month, it is fine during the day during the week, but on weekends and evenings, we can't get more than 1 mbps. We pay for 40 mbps, but they want $225 to cancel. Are there any avenues to cancel a contract when they are clearly not living up to their end of the deal?

Technicolor C2100T or TP-Link AC1750 for wireless router?

Hello! We just upgraded our speed to 100Mbps. A CL tech came and installed a new modem/router, the C2100T. We were previously using a TP-LINK AC1750 for our wireless router. What I'd like to know is, would it be better to use the AC1750 or the C2100T as our wireless router? I'm not really sure how to compare the two. Thanks for any help!

Throttled speeds after move across city.

Hello, I am posting here to see if anyone can provide their thoughts on my current issue with throttled speeds on my Century Link gigabit connection, specifically with Usenet traffic. I previously posted on reddit under the appropriate subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/comments/624hnw/throttled_speed_after_moving_across_city/) and was told to ask her as well. I will paste all my details below: --------------- I recently moved from the center of my city to the suburbs. I've been using CenturyLink gigabit for just under a year now due to data caps imposed by Comcast (previous provider). I've been a UsenetServer.com subscriber for many years and have generally been very happy with them. First of all, I never had a fully saturated connection since I have been with CenturyLink. Maximum I saw at my prior residence was around 24MB/s (around 200Mb/s). UNS claimed they don't cap and I should essentially be able to max my connection with them. Oh well. Now that I moved from one location in the city to the other (verified gigabit at both locations), I am now seeing an extremely consistent plateaued speed of 5MB/s. Here's an image of me resetting the number of connections a few times: http://i.imgur.com/3VomKJF.png Important: usenet is the only service where I see these throttled speeds. For the record, I have been using a CenturyLink provided modem/router: C1100Z. At this point I have now tried just about everything. - I have always used SSL. Multiple ports, 443, 563, 8080 as supported by UNS. - I have changed the number of connections from 1-20 and everything in between. - I have tried other providers like Giganews with zero change. (potential issue here, maybe just UNS/Giganews are throttled??) - I have uninstalled, reinstalled, wiped configs and rebuilt from scratch both SABnzbd (never had an issue before) and NZBGet. - I have used VPNs as provided by UNS, my seedbox (Canada), and done so through many locations inside the USA and outside the USA. Each time I verified that I was being seen externally as from those locations. - I have, of course, done speed tests after speed tests from multiple sources to confirm my connection is otherwise solid. For example, I can pull 40-50MB/s from Steam, and have seen 10-15MB/s over torrents. I am currently working with Giganews support (not getting very far) and have gone through a complete UNS support ticket to closure regarding this issue. Again... while not fully saturated, less than 2 weeks ago I was getting ~25MB/s speeds solid. Now I am only getting 5MB/s no matter what I do. My biggest question: why am I getting the exact same speeds on all of those VPNs? Granted, I only saw ~5MB/s when on a VPN that could support that kind of speed, but I NEVER saw anything higher than 5MB/s. Second question: is there something magically hidden in Windows 10 or maybe an issue with my SSD that was tripped somehow in the move that would be capping data locally? Lastly: is it possible that even through SSL and a VPN, CenturyLink is simply throttling all NNTP traffic? If so... how do I get around that? Any and all advice is much appreciated. This is starting to drive me insane. Thanks! Update: I have now used another computer to independently verify these speeds. AFAIK now, there is no speed cap due to cache limit, cpu, ram, ssd, or any other hardware bottleneck. --------------- I understand that some of that information may not be applicable to this forum specifically, but I figured more info is better than less. My primary question still remains: why would I not see any bandwidth changes on VPN vs no VPN? That seems very odd, but I am certainly no VPN expert. I would sincerely appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks!

[CenturyTel] Forced "technology upgrade" ?

$

I have been getting questionable phone calls from CenturyLink saying they are doing a "Technology Upgrade" in my area and they need to replace my DSL modem. And oh by the way the ISP I am using for my DSL is no longer going to be supported and they would be happy to provide me with their own service. Has anyone else seen this ? If it is real it seems like CL is just trying to force out the other DSL providers that use their lines and just plain illegal. Where is the best place to file complaints/claims against them ? FCC, state AGO's ? They have been leaving phone messages so I have recordings of what they are saying and trying to do. I have no intention of switching to them as an ISP and will drop phone and DSL if that what it comes too. thanks for any info

C1000Z, FEC Errors, And Cat6

Hey guys! First post on DSL Reports, hopefully I'm in the right forum for this xD. Long story short, my modem used to be upstairs, in my room ~200ft of old/cheap phone wiring. So I moved my modem into the garage on the other side of the NID, and ran a cat6 cable to it (only about 15-20ft). I haven't drilled a hole in the garage wall for the cable yet, so for now it's outside and running underneath the garage door while I test. For a week and a half, I had a cheaper cat5e cable from Home Depot - more on that later). My SNR went from 7dB to ~20.4dB (going from modem upstairs, to garage). I then have a couple of powerline adapters from tp-link that go from the garage power outlet to my room up here. This system seems to work surprisingly well except I have had a few issues with the powerlink suddenly losing connection. However, I'm concerned about these RS FEC errors I'm getting. A couple weeks ago when I did the cat5e, my SNR went up to fantastic levels, but I was getting random bursts of FEC errors. I'd have 0, then suddenly spike to 500+. Thinking maybe my cat5e install was sketchy, or the wire was cheap, I ordered some great cat6 off amazon - but same result it would appear. I'm starting to wonder. Maybe it's the modem? Or between the DSLAM and my NID? I have had the modem since they brought a fiber overhaul out here about 3 years ago. I don't know if the C1000Z I have now is degrading, and it's time to upgrade. Here's some photos of the install and stats on the line: http://imgur.com/a/hPJvf Ultimately my connection seems stable enough, I'm just a nerd with too much free time looking to try and squeek out as much performance out of my connection as possible - and future proofing my setup a little. EDIT: Here's a photo of my DSL app that I made a copule hours hours into recording. https://i.gyazo.com/14cee77d9871fd9544ad4a1b09a27380.png. Added the FEC errors graph.

Difference Between CL Simple Internet Installation 7 & 12 Mbps?

$

Hello all! I'm looking to switch away from Comcast internet, and a colleague suggested CenturyLink. Entering my address on their website shows that CenturyLink offers two internet packages under the CL Simple Internet brand. Both are $30 dollars a month, however one is at 7 Mbps and the other is 12 Mbps. The main difference is the 7 Mbps lets you do a self install (they ship you the modem and associated cables), and the 12 Mbps requires a one time $150 installation fee and it seems like a technician needs to come out. Does anyone have any information on what is involved with the tech coming out? From my limited understanding of some quick google searching, is the 12 Mbps a bonded connection and the tech will need to install a second phone line from the pole to my jack near where the modem will be? How exactly will the tech be running a second line from the pole to my third story apartment, and then (more importantly) from the apartment wall to the jack near the modem almost on the other side of the apartment without tearing into the walls/drywall??? I'm in New Mexico if it makes a difference, but I'm mainly just trying to understand what the difference between these two plans are if there is one in terms of installation or line/connection type, and what that means for installation. I also plan on calling CenturyLink tomorrow for some more info, but figured I'd ask here in the meantime. I appreciate you guys helping a dummy understand this a little better, thanks!

Overporvisioning gone after "upgrades"

About a month ago I received one of those web notifications from Centurylink stating they were going to do upgrades in my area around the 15th of March, and that I needed to verify my modem so they make sure it will support the upgrades. Well the 15th came around and I noticed shortly after that these so called upgrades cut my speed in half from 26mbps to 13mbps. Even though I am paying for 12, when you are used to being provisioned at 26 and they say they are doing upgrades but cut your speed in half, it kinda ticks you off. So I went to Centurylink the next day and asked them why my overprovisioning was gone and all they could tell me is that I'm only paying for 12 so that's what I should be getting. Does anyone have success on getting them to overprovision again? It's been over 2 weeks provisioned at 13, and I know my line is capable of the speed, in fact I am capable of 100mbps on DSL according to CL.

Netgear N300 modem/router

Just bought this modem today and didn't look much into centurylink before hand. I'm not sure If I can use this modem or not because it doesn't have a line to go to the phone jack, just the output for a coax cable. Looking online and videos it looks like centurylink hooks through a phone jack. The model is a C3000 , am I screwed ? Or can I still manage to use this modem with centurylink ? Has anyone had luck with this modem or is it easy to get around to installing? Thank you

Message about system upgrade - any thoughts?

Several days ago a webpage appeared from CenturyLink in my broswer. It stated that CL is upgrading its High-Speed Internet service in our neighborhood around April 13th. It said I needed to contact them to validate my modem's compatibility with the upgrade. It then showed my current modem details, which included Modem Model # (Actiontec Q1000) and Modem firmware (QAQ002-31.20L.4) It said to resolve the issue I can either chat with technical support or call them. It said if my modem is not compatible that a new modem would be provided free of charge. It also stated that if by April 3rd they cannot verify our modem has been upgraded we will receive another similar notification. The message also said if by the day of upgrade we are not compatible our internet will be shutoff. I immediately called tech support and they had no idea what I was talking about. I explained the message and after checking with their supervisor they advised me I don't have to do anything and my modem is compatible. Today, on April 3rd, my wife said a similar message appeared on her web browser. Also threatening shutoff. If my modem is compatible with this upgrade why do I keep seeing this message? I did change the admin password on the modem and only use it in transparent bridging mode. I don't know if that has anything to do with why we keep receiving these messages. Does anyone know what is going on here? We currently have 50/5 service and under modem stats it says Multimode/VDSL2-8A. For what it is worth, a couple of weeks ago our internet was out for most of the day and there were several CL and contractor trucks by the main DSL (DSLAM?) box down the street. Here is a printout of our modem/connection stats. Are these pretty normal? DSL Link Uptime: 10 days Channel Type: Interleaved Near End CRC Errors: 71 Far End CRC: 0 30 Min Near End CRC: 1679 30 Min Far End CRC: 0 30 Min Near End FEC: 222022 30 Min Far End FEC: 393 SNR: 8dB / 16dB Attenuation: 16dB / 8dB Power: 17.4dBm / 8.6dBm Anyone know what is going on here? Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

My Asus RT-AC68U seems to be throttling upload speed

I have a fiber optic connection to my house. I had CenturyLink install the ONT that goes to my router. The service I have is 40 Gb/20 Gb. However, I am only getting 1.8 Gb upload. The technician tested the U/L speed at the ONT and it is indeed 20 Gb (The D/L speed is OK at 41 Gb). Is there a setting I need to make on my router to get the full 20 Gb upload speed? I am using a PC with Win7-64

Best modem for 1.5 mbps over bad lines

$

So I live in a rural area that only gets 1.5 mpbs max. The problem is keeping it at that speed. The modem's downlink connection often trains down to 1 mpbs or less. We never lose the connection entirely, except in very heavy rain, but it also isn't getting any better. From what I can tell, we get occasional peaks of interference on the line that cause the modem to train down, then the interference subsides but the connection never goes back up on it's own. This happens about once or twice a month, and the only thing we can do is call up CL and get them to manually force a renegotiation of the connection. This is generally a difficult call, as most agents don't understand what I'm asking them to do, and their scripts tell them they need to send out a tech to eliminate line interference. We've had a tech out probably a dozen times over the last couple years alone. The line is as good as it's going to get. They're very old lines, at the edge of where it's even possible to get DSL. So what I'm looking for is the best modem to squeeze every ounce of juice from the lines, and literally any way of retraining my connection without a phone call. My current modem is an old M1000 I got when the area was still Qwest. CL gave us a replacement that seemed like it might have done a little better, but it got fried. We tried a TD-8616, but returned it since it never got higher than 1.1mpbs. I heard broadcom chipsets handle distant connections better than most? I'm also looking for something that allows me to manipulate the SNR margin. My understanding is that I might be able to manipulate the margin to retrain the connection from my end, which would be amazing. I don't know if that even works with Centurylink, or if there's any other way to go about it (I've seen nothing on their website), but I'll try anything to avoid having that same conversation over and over. I've been looking at three modems for about the same price, the C1000Z, C1100Z, and C2000T. My criteria are that it work well on a distant, 1.5mbps high interference connection, and it lets me adjust the SNR margin manually. It will be bridged, so I don't care about the router component at all. Any help much appreciated

Trying to use 3rd Party router on Prism Gigabit

Hi guys! Joined the forum just so I could seek help. Recently got fiber installed and wanted to my own router. RT-AC68U. Using the many tutorials here, I thought all would go well. Nothing seems to be working for me. I first switched the router to use PPPoE. I called CenturyLink to get those credentials, and those do not seem to authenticate at all. I did notice that the C2100z they provided used IPoE. I then tried following a different tutorial where you just need to plug in the Ethernet from the ONT and set up VLAN tagging. Still no luck. I am going crazy here trying to figure out what is going on. My questions to you guys is... 1.) Did they provide me with the wrong PPPoE credentials? I notice a lot of people saying theirs ends in @qwest.net. Support told me this was not needed. 2.) Because I have prism TV and it uses IPoE, do I need to do anything different? Thank You for all suggestions and help. This is really making me lose my mind!
