[CenturyTel] 17225 Area Code DSL problems

I live in a rural area in PA. Our service has been horrible lately. We have 6 mbps dsl and lately the best we can get is 1.5 to 2. Our modem is a Netgear ADSL2+ DM111PSP running in bridge mode. The router is a Buffalo EdgeRouter running DD-WRT. Some days I am running at 5+ mbps (as indicated by the WAN side monitoring on the Buffalo router) other days, like today, I am lucky to get 700 kbps. Multiple tickets in to Centurylink and this intermittent service is impacting our family's ability to work (I work from home multiple days per week) and do school work for the kids. This all started 2 weeks ago and nothing has changed in the house. I am a network security engineer so I have enough knowledge to know it isn't in my house. Last time it was really bad I hardwired to the router and turned off the wifi interface and was still getting crappy bandwidth. Rebooting the modem helps some times other times it has no impact. Service is also just plain going out for minutes at a time ( 0 kbps) throughout the day. Thoughts, ideas, help?

[CenturyTel] Will I regret buying a ZyXEL C1100Z from CenturyLink?

I have a primitive CenturyLink 7Mbps T1.413 ADSL connection that CL has no plans to upgrade! Since I don't have much bandwidth to work-with, my goal is to max-out my connection speed! I'm far enough away from the CO that I'm not going to hit 7168Kbps, but I'll take what I can get! For the past 6 months, I used a CenturyLink-branded Actiontec C1000A that has been gradually slowing down. For two months, this modem ran at 7072Kbps downstream, but now the best that it can do is 6592Kbps. Two years ago, I purchased a ZyXEL PK5001Z from CL, but it actually runs slower than the C1000A! When I have bad results with a product, I usually do my best to steer clear of the manufacturer in the future, which rules-out Actiontec and ZyXEL. I found a handy chart in my CL account that lists the modems that CL supports! One of the supported modem manufacturers that I haven't tried is Technicolor. I tried to find a Technicolor C2100T online, but it appears that this modem isn't manufactured anymore! Aw, shucks! :( This morning I went to a CL store to see what modems they are offering. The only choice is the ZyXEL C1100Z. I pointed-out to the the sales woman that I had bad luck with my PK50001Z, but she replied that I can return the new modem within 30 days, no questions asked! So I broke my rule and dropped $99.99 for a C1100Z! After I got home, I checked the reviews for this modem and they are favorable. So I went ahead and connected and configured the modem, which is a snap to do! This modem is a 9" tall mini-tower that runs much cooler than my Actiontec C1000A does! During prime time, the modem connected at 6880/896Kbps, which my C1000A can't do! I might be able to get this modem to sync at a faster speed early in the morning. I'm not an intensive wifi user, but my Dell laptop connects at 72Mbps, which is the fastest speed that it supports. So far, this looks like a good decision! :) What do you think? DeepDiver

Have Centurylink Gigabit and Amplifi router - Need DNS Server

I have an Amplifi router (Ubiquiti) and the tech tells me I can skip my C2100T and take the ethernet from the ONT box directly to the WAN port on the router. I know my username/password but the setup demands the primary and secondary dns server addresses. Centurylink seems to be clueless. Any recommendation? Has anyone done this setup?

Zyxel Q1000z

I currently have a Zyxel Q1000z that Century link sent me a few years back. I have very poor signal strength and every day around 7:30pm my signal gets even weaker and I can't load anything. If I purchase the Zyxel c1000z that I see people recommending often here will that fix my problem?

Century Link keeps charging me for equipment I don't have.

I reactivated my gigabit fiber line about 5 months ago. I already had everything in place from a previous install. Century link reactivated the port that my ONT is connected to, I called customer service and entered my PPOE credentials into my router and tagged for vlan 201. I was up and running in less than 5 min before the installer showed up. I tried to cancel the install, but Centurylink said they couldn't do that because it would cancel the port being turned up and the installer had to show up. When he did he was here for five min, I explained to him I was up and running, he checked his tablet and said ok and left. Next thing I know I'm being charged for an install fee and a modem rental charge. I call up customer service, they were able to research and remove both charges. Fast forward 3 months, now I'm being charged a unreturned broadband equipment charge for 108.09. It turns out the tech never marked on the work order that the equipment wasn't installed and just closed out the work order. I'm now being charged for equipment that I never got. On top of it, it's a nightmare trying to get anyone at Century Link to credit my account. I keep asking CL what the modem ID is that's on my account if I had gotten one, and no one can provide it. Well I know why because I never got one!! Super frustrated right now. Anyone have any insite what it takes to get this corrected for good. I'm tired of seeing charges pop up for a modem I don't have nor do I need.

Avoiding CL wireless router with ONT?

I'm new to all this, and in Seattle I just got CL 40 mb service, along with their wireless router. I understand it is fiber to the house, then Ethernet into the house and thus the wireless router, which I'd like to replace (yes, I bought it, but it'll be a spare) with an apple AirPort Extreme and express to cover my three story house. Can I simply connect a smart switch to the ONT Ethernet output, port 1, and then the first apple to port two thereby by-passing the CL wireless router altogether? Thanks. (Xyxel 1100z is the device bought from CL)

New account at same address?

Quick question please Currently we would like the new 80 mbps plan for streaming to Ethernet connected devices but CL told us that we can't have it at the price they are offering it to new customers which is 30 a month. I have been with them since they existed and were penalized for it apparently. However, what I want to know is if it is possible for one of the other independent adults renting here to get new service under their name with a second modem and second network? In other words a new customer at the same address obviously. We could dedicate the 40 Meg service we have now to wifi only devices, and the 80 Meg service to Ethernet only. We would need at least 3 physical lines correct? Has anyone seen this done before? Thanks

New fee added without consent and changes made without consent

Non-Published Non Listed Res 6.00 a month fee added last month on bills. This is the worst company on the face of the earth for products, services and support. You have to spend days with them to get anything marginally resolved. Yesterday early morning I was on the chat with them inquiring on why this month's bill suddenly went up $20. In the middle of "one moment sir while I take a look...", the internet went dead for two days (back only an hour ago). The person apparently instead of focusing on what she was doing screw up my service causing the outage as she was trying to sell me DirectTV and other crap like @ease etc. I don't know how to have been clearer that I just want my dry-line DSL at the price that it is worth. They want to charge me $60/month for 3 Mbps (are they a**sholes?). Being at the edge of a rural area, these idiots are the only option I have at the moment but if this keeps up and now with this added $6/month just slapped in there I may just jump to a wireless broadband and hope for the best. I really hate this Centurylink. Even all these service techs around here hate them. Go figure.

Real prices and real caps?

I can't believe I am saying this but I am considering getting DSL again. Really I am just tired of paying $100/mo for cable internet so I capped our router at 5mb for the past week so see if we could deal with the speed... along with some creative QOS I think we can deal with this. So I know I can get service for $30/mo for 12 months it looks like I might be able to get $35 for 24 but I can't seem to order 24mo online. The website says we will get 7mb but we are about 6 blocks from the CO so I am betting we would get over provisioned which would be nice. I have done some reading, it's been US West kinda years since we had service so my hope is the awesome forum members might have some ideas on these questions... What is the real cost of "Naked" DSL after the promo period? It looks like there is a 250gb soft cap, is that all it is right now? Recommendations on a modem to use in pass thru mode? Like I said I am doing QOS so I want to auth with my Edgerouter and not end up in a double NAT. How bad are the below the line fees? I understand the sediment I am best sticking with cable but I really want a long term price lock and no stupid bartering, I have 0 use for a home phone. I don't want to bundle. Any advice would be awesome! Thanks!

1G Centurylink in Seattle connected directly to Asus RT-AC88U

I am using the Asus RT-AC88U and have my CL 1G internet going directly into it from the ONT. I have VLan tagging set to 201 however for reasons I cannot understand I have to be in SAFE MODE on Windows 10 hardwired in order to speedtest and get 1G down and 1G up. When I'm on wireless 5G sitting 3 feet from the router the max upload/download speed I can get is 500 gbps. Is this normal? Can I get anything faster than 500 on wireless? I am running Asus Merlin as well. Any help and guidance would be appreciated!

Question about hardware for CenturyLink fiber service in MN

Hello all! A few months ago I had CenturyLink fiber optic service installed at my house in Saint Paul, Minnesota. We're pretty pleased with it so far. But there's something I want to do and I don't have enough know-how to figure out if it's possible and what to buy to make it work. So here's the setup. The fiber line comes into the house in a downstairs room. There it goes into... I don't know what to call it. Is it the ONT? It's the black box with the brand name Calix on it. Someone help me out there. Then an Ethernet cord comes out of that and goes to the wireless router (Zyxel C1100Z). The Ethernet to the router got strung around the outside of the house and into the upstairs living room with the initial install. Now I am turning the downstairs room (where the ONT is) into my home office and I want a wired connection. And I'd rather not run the Ethernet all the way back down there since the ONT is right there. Can I add a second router to the ONT? I see there are more ports on it. It doesn't even need to be wireless. If so, how do I do that? What should I buy? Thanks in advance for your help!

Talktous no longer responding

Hello again, ***Please read first. I have no intentions on upsetting anyone and I really don't enjoy writing this as I have other things to do. This is not meant to allow others to bash centurylink. your problem with centurylink are yours. I have posted this to have public record of progress with issues that can no longer be resolved through the chains given to me as a customer. I would rather do this before involving any service commission that would not be beneficial to anyone.*** The issues we have had over the years have usually been resolved after an email to talktous@centurylink.com (or mostly IHD Escalations people, who now say I have the wrong department). After spending hours on the phone with tech support to check if my modem is plugged in to the wall or resetting all factory defaults and trying this or that setting, I started emailing issues with speed tests logged. That was what now seems to be the good old days. Since back in late 2014 our connection is at its best 2mbps down(I got excited when we reached 5 down with latency of 113 once), with latency being 200+. Upload speeds seem to be close to the norm at .40-.70. I sent an email to Talktous@centurylink.com on the 13th of July and have had no response. The last few interactions let me know how much of a miracle it is to have 10Mbps here. I've also been told of the known bottleneck in Basile, La. My normal download speed at 5:30AM is .9*Mbps. Trying to check into work after hours is impossible. A lot of the time I can't load centurylink.com without finding something to do while waiting. Just in case anyone is wondering, yes, I have unplugged everything but my pc to test speeds. I was also born the day before yesterday and not quite yesterday. I now have a fresh OS install on this pc. I also check with my work laptop directly connected while trying not to drive 40 Min. away to the office when the issue could be addressed without leaving my family at 2AM. This connection used to be fixed promptly when we could work together on it. I wish I could say the same is still true. So, have you guys just given up? Is my only option to cancel service because this feat of 10Mbps is unobtainable? Why cant someone just tell me this instead of taking my $80 per month? Is it possible to provide you guys with direct burial cat6 to replace a bad line? A trencher isn't that hard to obtain, so could I provide one and you guys rerun a line? I could also provide access to the easement and get dottie out, get a schedule and take off of work to allow for the pull. Are there some power issues somewhere that we could address with engineered solar backup banks? I'm willing to put up some personal capital in this to help provide what I've been paying for. I would really appreciate some sort of thought. When this connection works correctly it allows me to spend more time at home. Not much more, but enough to find it important. EDIT*** I updated my profile to reflect that I no longer live in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Currently live in Reeves, Louisiana. Just would like to be as up front as possible.

Q1000 Dual Zone WiFi

Our church has used an a1000 with two WiFi zone for years. We have a public or guest zone and a more secure zone which also see's our wired connections and can print to our copier etc... The a1000 died and they sent a Q1000 as replacement, I can see how to set up two WiFi zones on the Q1000 (nor do I remember how we set it up on the A1000). Can someone point us in the right direction?

C1100Z Two Network WiFi

I just received a C1100Z and I can see how to set two SSID, one for our internal network and the other for guest http://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/modem-c1100z-wireless-multiple-ssid.html, what I can't figure out is how to separate the IP ranges so that the guest network isn't considered friendly to our internal network. With out old C1000 we had out internal on 192.168.0.1 - 30 and the guest using 192.168.1.1 to 100. Anyone know how to separate them on the C1100Z?

Centurylink Upgrade package problem

I have had Centurylink for over 8 years. I recently upgraded from 10mbps to 20mbps. When I chatted with them, I told all I wanted to change was the internet speed. They installed the service, it works GREAT. The problem I have is I lost VOICEMAIL on my phone service. I called to complain, they said I can add it for $2.50 a month. My total bill went up $15. Why is voicemail NOT included in the phone service? I have had it since I started with them. WHY wasn't I told it would drop JUST voicemail? Really why would it just drop voicemail? Bad customer service! Second, i told them to add voicemail, then they told me I would have to call again between 8am-6pm. I work during that time, Most of the time I am on hold for more than 10minutes when I call. last time I was on chat had to wait over 20min. So i can't call on lunch. WHO can help me get my NORMAL voicemail back on my service? I really think it should be FREE since I wasn't told ANY of my service would be changed!!!

Hot Weather Killing Internet Lines?

I continue to have issues with my CenturyLink DSL service. It was working wonderfully through the winter but now that the temperatures have gotten above 80 I have started to experience trouble again. My internet kept dropping today and it is causing a major headache. If the lines can't stand 80, I am scared what kind of summer I am in for when they get above 100. I've e-mailed tech support but I am sure they are going to give me the runaround. Any advice or insight is appreciated.

[Embarq] VDSL2 Bonded Modem

Does anyone know what Centurylink is currently using for there V-bonded service? I am scheduled for a upgrade on Monday from single line VDSL2.

Need fiber optic modem for CenturyLink

I have had a fiber optic account for 2 years, and now that my company is not paying for this, I need to switch from renting my router to buying one. I originally had the Prism TV and a phone line, but have dropped those from my account. I want to buy my own modem (I have a router), but am confused. The current modem is a Calix 716GE-I. It has 4 ethernet ports which I am using one to my router. It also has a white wire coming out of the back of the modem that connects to a wall jack via a small square connector that looks like it might be a fiber connector (I have never seen this before). The white wire looks like it might be a custom modified modem job, as there is no connector on the modem. My service is 50/3 and, as I said, I would like to buy a replacement modem so I can do away with the Calix rental modem. What modem can I purchase? Thanks.

Who powers C/L email?

Does anyone happen to know who actually handles C/L email?   I doubt they are doing it themselves but using something like Yahoo the way a lot of other companies do even though it's been hacked and all the user information stolen at least 3 times. I don't use it myself but I have a friend who does and he's always complaining about problems with it.

Problems Upgrading Firmware

While trying to upgrade the latest firmware on a C2100Z ran into a problem using a MacBook Pro. From the GUI it all goes well until "Please Wait"appears. Stays like that. Don't think its got anything to do with MacBook. Waited 5 mins. Anyone run into this?
