I just upgraded and one of the lines (my original I'm sure) looks good, but the second has a much longer loop and of course way less bandwidth. Shouldn't they be much closer in length?

How to almost use any router with CenturyLink's 1 Gig Internet!
So I have CenturyLink's 1 gigabit Internet. One of the biggest complaints I've seen around the Internet over the last year or so is that it's really difficult to use the router of your choice with their service.
CenturyLink provides some pretty awful equipment with their gigabit Internet service. Wireless-N router. Seriously?
The 2 biggest problems I see are the VLAN 201 issue where CL requires you to put a VLAN 201 on the Internet/WAN port of our router. A lot of consumer routers don't support this, or you have to flash custom firmware, etc. And the 2nd biggest problem is consumer routers not being able to download up to the full gigabit speed. Some routers cap out at 300Mbps - 500Mbps.
I FINALLY HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION! Between the 2 problems mentioned above, my steps below completely solve th VLAN 201 issue.
Now I'm not a networking person, so maybe this seems pretty obvious to some of you. However, over my last year of research, I have not seen this mentioned anywhere on the Internet. I finally found this info on DD-WRT forum website by someone who goes by the username "JAMESMTL." He suggested to a user "why don't you just buy a managed switch and create a VLAN 201 on it."
I seriously thought to myself, "is that all it takes to finally fix this VLAN 201 issue once and for all?" Absolutely!
So here's the switch I bought off of Amazon "NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105Ev2 5-Port Gigabit Web Managed (Plus) Switch (GS105Ev2)" I got it for roughly $40.
Once I got the switch in the mail, it was pretty much just configuring the switch with VLANs 201 on ports 1 and 2. This way the managed switch handles the VLAN 201 issue and then you can almost use any router you want with your CenturyLink service!
Keep in mind, I think you will still have to have a pretty new and kick-butt router, because the router needs to have decent hardware so it can download almost gigabit speeds. I think it's called "NAT acceleration?" From what I've leared online over the last year or so, some routers write their firmware to take advance of this. It's a mixture of hardware/software. If you're going to try and use an old router from a couple years ago, you may run into the 2nd biggest problem I've mentioned above. Your router may cap out download speeds of 300Mbps - 500Mbps.
2 routers I have tested behind my managed switch, are Asus AC3100 and the Netgear Orbi that just came out last month. Both routers performed excellent in speed tests! I was able to achieve 900+Mbps.
Now on to the good stuff! Configuring the Netgear ProSafe GS105Ev2!
-------------------===============-------------------
In a nutshell, this is essentially how your network is going to setup with the managed switch:
switch port 1 -> The ethernet cord going from your ONT box is to be plugged into port 1 on the managed switch.
switch port 2 -> The ethernet cord going from port 2 of the managed switch will plug into the WAN (or Internet) port on the back of your router.
switch port 3 -> The ethernet cord going from port 3 should plug into your computer's Ethernet port so you can access the switch's admin panel to configure it.
STEPS TO CONFIGURE THE SWITCH WITH VLAN 201:
So what you're going to do is open the Netgear Utility program to manage this switch.
1. Disable DHCP on the switch, as your router will be handling DHCP. You'll do this by clicking on 'IP Settings' after the utility program discovers your switch.
2. Make sure the switch is on the same subnet as your router. My default router's gateway is 192.168.1.1, therefore, after I disabled DHCP on the switch, the Netgear utility program assigned the switch an IP address of 192.168.1.15. Perfect! Now the Netgear switch is on the same IP subnet as my router. Apply the settings! Now it's time to go into the switch and configure it!
3. Click the VLAN tab in the Netgear configuration utility program.
4. Click on 802.1Q
5. Click on 'Advanced'
6. Enable Advanced 802.1Q
7. Create a VLAN ID with the value '201'
8. Now click on the 'VLAN Membership' link on the left-hand side.
9. In the 'VLAN Identifier' drop-down list, select 201
10. Click on the white box right below 01 port until the letter 'T' is displayed. (T stands for 'tagged.' Port 1 is going to be 201 Tagged.)
11. Click on the white box right below 02 port until the letter 'U' is displayed. (U stands for 'untagged.' Port 2 is going to be 201 Untagged.)
12. Click on the white boxes below the rest of the ports (ports 3, 4, and 5) until there is nothing displayed in the boxes.
13. Click 'Apply' to save your changes.
14. Finally, click 'port PVID' on the left-hand side.
15. Put a check-mark next to Port 01 and Port 02. Assign them both a PVID of 201. Click 'Apply' to save your changes.
16. Configure your home router with your CenturyLink's PPPoE credentials. You can get this info by calling CenturyLink if needed. However, most of us should have received this info from our technician when they installed our Internet. Once you do this, your Internet light on your router should turn green (or whatever color it turns to indicate it's receiving a good Internet connection!)
17. Now disconnect the ethernet cord going from port 3 of the switch to your computer. You now need to plug an ethernet cord into your desktop's LAN port and plug the other end into a port on the back of your router (your desktop needs Internet access after all!)
18. (Optional Step) If you want to be able to access the Netgear's admin panel later on in case you ever need to make changes, then plug an Ethernet cord into port 3 on the back of your managed switch, and plug the other end of ethernet cord into a free port on the back of your router.
REMINDER!: If you are using a router that does by chance allow you to set a VLAN 201 on the WAN/Internet port (like a lot of Asus routers) don't forget to go and remove that now! Your managed switch will be handling the VLAN 201 tagging from now on :-)
YOU'RE DONE! Your $30-40 managed switch is now configured with VLAN 201 so you can now use ANY router with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet (as long as the router supports PPPoE, which most do.)
I know this seems like a lengthy process, but it's actually not. I want to say I spent anywhere from 45 minutes - 1 hour tops! I'm not an expert, but I'm also not a novice.
If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer!
So to wrap it up. What does this work-around provide? It will allow you to use the router of your choice with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet service. You don't have to worry about flashing custom firmwares to routers. You don't have to worry about finding a router that allows you to creat VLANs on the Internet/WAN port, etc. The Netgear managed switch takes care of this!
Hope this helps!

CL Cannot Keep Circuit Up -- Outages on a Weekly Basis
Have moved to Zip Code 27312 and the only provider is CL. Unfortunately, we seem to be on oversubscribed equipment and we have an outage at least once every two weeks.
The last two outages (Red DSL lamp on Modem) the Customer Service has given us a technician 5+, 6+, 7+ days out from when we call. So, we have ZERO service and all of our network functionality is dead in the water.
We have placed a complaint with the FCC, CL claimed that the issues were temporary and now fixed.
Our circuit went out this time yesterday (1/11) at 4:00 PM--the soonest they claim a technician can come out is on 1/16 at 7:00 PM.
Does this seem normal for CL and their support of DSL.

[Qwest] DSL Modem keeps retraining
I've been having trouble with my Centurylink DSL connection for the past few months and I've finally realized the problem was related to the modem frequently dropping the connection and retraining. It seems to retrain about 20 times in a 24 hour period.
I am using an ActionTec C1000A DSL Modem in transparent bridging mode with a UBNT EdgeRouter Lite.
I've called Centurylink a few times about the issue.
On the first call, I was informed that my line was over-provisioned and this was causing the the issue. I pay for 40Mbps down/20Mbps service and the line was provisioned to 45Mbps. They changed it to provision at 40Mbps. This did not fix the issue.
After a second call, I made an appointment for a technician to check the line. His checks on the line came back fine. However, his supervisor suggested that he have the load coils removed from the line. So, he called the Central Office and had them removed. He told me that if this didn't fix the problem, the problem was with my router. This did not fix the issue either.
So, I turn off transparent bridging mode on the DSL Modem and removed my router from my network. Of course, the problem is still happening and the problem is not with my router. (It's very frustrating that they always seem to blame the customer's equipment.)
I've called CL again and arranged to have another technician visit. The last guy seemed to be out of options. What do I tell this guy?
Below is a recent screen shot of my DSL Admin page and a few lines from the log. I can see now that my upload speed is only at 16.384Mbps. It was provisioned closer to 20Mbps previously.

Zyxel C1100Z won't go into Transparent Bridge Mode
New to the forum. I have just upgraded to CL 25mg service via VDSL2. Service is working fine, however I can't get my C1100Z to "take" or "stay" in transparent bridge mode. I have followed this thread http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30794998-Setting-the-ZyXEL-C1100Z-into-bridge-mode and this thread http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30993024-Working-with-ZyXel-C1100Z-modem-bridge-transparent-mode.
When I change the ISP Protocol setting to transparent bridge in the Advanced Setup, WAN Settings and click apply I get the "please wait" and "saving settings" screens. However after the advanced setup screen returns the modem is still in "auto select" ISP Protocol instead of the "transparent bridge" I previously selected. The VLAN setting I have left in "untagged". I am connecting to the modem directly from my MacBook Pro via an ethernet cable. I appreciate anyone's insight.

I open some ports to ASUS router in order to work with Security cameras BUT I wont be able to see them outside of his place ... inside yes I can see them..
So I need some suggestions about this and see IF I did it right or wrong and what could be done in order to work..

question about download speeds on fiber.
I am not complaining about the speeds that I am receiving. I would just like to know what my download speeds are always slower than my upload. I don't believe it would be a hardware issue but I could be entirely wrong. The speeds paid for are 1000 Mbps up and down. ASUS settings for Centurylink Gig
I switched out my C2100T and for an ASUS RT-87U. So far it's working perfectly for both TV and internet. Speeds are near Gig where previously with the C2100T they fluctuated all over the place. I wanted to make sure I am squeezing every single ounce out of the connection both wireless and wired and was wondering what settings others are using.
Hardwired I am getting upwards up 950M+ but wireless I am seeing about 150-200M on the 5G network with my AC devices.
This is being tested with a new Google Pixel, 2016 Macbook Pro, iPad Pro, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, 2 x 2016 Dell XPS laptops and some Plex servers I have setup in the home.
I figure there should be some value I should enable/disable but just am not entirely sure which one.
For the record, QOS and all of the filtering is disabled. AI Protection is disabled. Parental control is disabled. Firewall is for ipv4 and ipv6 is enabled.
What settings is everyone else using for their ASUS router?

Setting my RT-AC87U behind my C1100Z router
Just had CenturyLink fiber installed in my new home. Longtime Cable customer. The C1100Z router they installed is a bit lacking and I want to bridge the C1100z and install my Asus router for better performance and range.
Is this as simple as setting the C1100z into bridge mode/tagged 201 transport and connecting the Asus WAN port to an E-port on the CL router? my old router is already setup with DHCP and my preferred SSID/Security settings.
Don't really want to replace the CL router with the Asus at this point. Just want to pass through to my Asus for now to see how it performs.
Any help appreciated. I've searched, but can't seem to find the same answer for my question.

[Qwest] Odd CL DSL problem?
For about a week we have been having a problem loading all but the simplest pages in any browser, over Ethernet or WiFi, laptop or iPad. Nothing has changed in our house. CL tech support has been useless so far.
Pages load slowly, sometimes time out, sometimes come up with no CSS styling. In Chrome developer tools, a typical media site (cnn, foxnews, local tv stations etc) will make hundreds of GET requests and most work OK, but a few come back "(failed) net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET" after about 22 seconds. This can be e.g. the CSS for the page, and it doesn't get styled. Sometimes we see nothing, but reloading sometimes brings up most of the page quickly. Some requests show they finished OK (200) after some large delay, and Chrome tool shows the delay as "stalled".
This is with CL 7Mbps/896kbps (nominal) speed service, which has worked pretty reliably up until the last week. Speed tests usually show the usual results (about 42ms ping, 5 down 0.7 up). Streaming on Roku works. Videos play. CL tech's line test shows no problem (of course). No funny stuff showing in router's admin pages. Have tried 2 routers with same results. Odd thing: Seem to have no problem over my company VPN.
Any ideas before I try Comcast/Xfinity?

CenturyLink internet run around
We first ordered our internet account in December 2016 for a 40 meg connection for 34.95 a month. We select the self-install option and to own the Centurylink modem for $99. We install the modem and get 10 megs. We call on the install date to tell them that the connection is incorrect and that we request it is fixed to the correct speed. They tell us that the 28th it will be fixed and then we still have 10-12 megs. The 9th of January is when the next tech is scheduled and never shows and I called on the 13th and complain that it is not fixed and then the 14th the supervisor comes and gives us 15-17 megs. So the next date for the next tech to visit is the 23rd no later than 7 PM. We will see how this works out. I will post an update if the same BS happens hopefully not. I will contact the Corporate office if this isn't resolved. I'm kinda sick of the slow speeds I have had 30 megs for the last 2 years with cable. Wish me luck!

[Qwest] CenturyLink c1000a Modem Issues
This seems to be the last place to go.
Last September lighting struck too close to our house and overloaded our modem and router simultaneously. We got replacements for both within two weeks. However, now the modem we got from CenturyLink, a c1000a, has suddenly dropped connection this morning and the internet light has been flashing red and green for about five minutes, then defaulting to red for another two or three. Then the cycle repeats.
I've accessed the modem settings, nothing helped. I need insight and, if possible, answers.

Talktous no longer responding
Hello again,
***Please read first. I have no intentions on upsetting anyone and I really don't enjoy writing this as I have other things to do. This is not meant to allow others to bash centurylink. your problem with centurylink are yours. I have posted this to have public record of progress with issues that can no longer be resolved through the chains given to me as a customer. I would rather do this before involving any service commission that would not be beneficial to anyone.***
The issues we have had over the years have usually been resolved after an email to talktous@centurylink.com (or mostly IHD Escalations people, who now say I have the wrong department). After spending hours on the phone with tech support to check if my modem is plugged in to the wall or resetting all factory defaults and trying this or that setting, I started emailing issues with speed tests logged. That was what now seems to be the good old days.
Since back in late 2014 our connection is at its best 2mbps down(I got excited when we reached 5 down with latency of 113 once), with latency being 200+. Upload speeds seem to be close to the norm at .40-.70. I sent an email to Talktous@centurylink.com on the 13th of July and have had no response.
The last few interactions let me know how much of a miracle it is to have 10Mbps here. I've also been told of the known bottleneck in Basile, La. My normal download speed at 5:30AM is .9*Mbps. Trying to check into work after hours is impossible. A lot of the time I can't load centurylink.com without finding something to do while waiting. Just in case anyone is wondering, yes, I have unplugged everything but my pc to test speeds. I was also born the day before yesterday and not quite yesterday. I now have a fresh OS install on this pc. I also check with my work laptop directly connected while trying not to drive 40 Min. away to the office when the issue could be addressed without leaving my family at 2AM.
This connection used to be fixed promptly when we could work together on it. I wish I could say the same is still true.
So, have you guys just given up? Is my only option to cancel service because this feat of 10Mbps is unobtainable? Why cant someone just tell me this instead of taking my $80 per month?
Is it possible to provide you guys with direct burial cat6 to replace a bad line? A trencher isn't that hard to obtain, so could I provide one and you guys rerun a line? I could also provide access to the easement and get dottie out, get a schedule and take off of work to allow for the pull. Are there some power issues somewhere that we could address with engineered solar backup banks? I'm willing to put up some personal capital in this to help provide what I've been paying for. I would really appreciate some sort of thought. When this connection works correctly it allows me to spend more time at home. Not much more, but enough to find it important.
EDIT*** I updated my profile to reflect that I no longer live in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Currently live in Reeves, Louisiana. Just would like to be as up front as possible.

Transparent Bridging AUTHENTICATION problem with 1100A
I ran the 1100a as traditionally for months, no issues. At the beginning of December, I configured it in Transparent bridging, for all the right reasons, and it ran great for several weeks. I started getting dropping of the internet for 10-15 seconds at at time HUNDREDS of times per day. (Verified this using opendns, which tracks your external IP. I was loosing authentication, and then would end up reconnecting, which would give me a new external IP)
Trying not to be THAT guy, that doesn't rule thing out for the right way, I checked external connection box, my dedicated wires, etc, because i was confident that this was problem with copper problem to my house. Everything check out great. Good SNR etc. In frustration, I just put the 1100a back into routing mode.....and everything was perfect again.
So now I've convinced myself that the authentication TO the 1100a is causing the drops, and that it is because i have not configured the detection of a live link correctly in the Asus AC68U. I of course had my username and password in correctly, but left everything else as default. (1492, etc.) I noticed that there are three methods giving to me to detect if the connection is up. (Disable / PPP Echo / DNS Probe) Default is PPP Echo. If use that it gives me two additional settings; PPP Echo Interval and PPP Echo Max Failures. Those defaults are 6 seconds and 10, which I was using.
Does anyone have similar in their router, and want to give me some tips? I searched everywhere to see if I could figure out what the Zyxel uses for these setting, so I could emulate, to no avail.
Should i Just disable detection all together, or run DNS Probe?
If I run PPP Echo detection do i need to stretch the time out?
I really want to get past double NAT, and I must be right on the edge of one of these settings. If I let the 1100a do the authentication.....no IP changes for weeks. If I put it into bridging mode, I start getting external IP changes several times a hour.
TIA
