[CenturyTel] Extremely high latency spikes.

$

Hello, I've been experiencing very high latency spikes for about two weeks now. Around the 2-3K range which makes speaking with family over Skype or gaming impossible. I'm hoping that someone here can give me advice as to what could be done to remedy the situation. I've contacted CenturyLink multiple times and they keep telling me that everything is fine or that there's a network outage. I really don't want to have to switch ISP's due to this. Thanks in advanced, -Charles

centurylink breaks appointment time

I am disappointed in centurylink, I had a verified appointment for upgrading my service that i made in person at their store just over a week ago. I called them on the phone yesterday to verify my appointment and they said yes I have one for the coming Saturday (today). I phoned the store again this morning (Saturday) and they said yes, my appointment is for 12-4 pm today. NO ONE CAME!!!!!!!! I called the technical service line and spoke with someone who said my appointment was rescheduled in the automated system. CAN YOU SAY ANGRY! I WAS NOT NOTIFIED! I wasted an entire day waiting for them. So hear this, the rescheduled date was automated and they made it for a time I would NOT be home. OK, so I demanded to the technician on the phone that it be scheduled ASAP for the next time I would be home. I told the tech on the phone to send me a written confirmation to my email, and it did not show up of course. So now I have no record of the phone call or the tech I spoke to or any guarantee that it is rescheduled for next Saturday. I am going to spend yet another one of my days off and personally going back to the centurylink store and speak to the manager in PERSON, and say that no less than 2 of their store employees LIED to me about my appointment, and DEMAND IN PERSON a written statement that someone will be out on the next scheduled appointment time for next week. THIS IS NO WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS CENTURYLINK!!!!!!!!

questions about conflicting bandwidth test results

$

Depending on which bandwidth test that I run, and the time of day that I run them, I may, for example, achieve the following results: 1) dslreports bandwidth test: downstream: 15Mbps 2) Q1000 DSL modem configurator: downstream: 25Mbps 3) digitalconcerthall (an online video streaming service): downstream: 5Mbps The above are results for "prime time" and represent a period that digitalconcerthall cannot be streamed without frequent periodic interruptions (e.g. 30-seconds apart). Outside of this time window, however, the rates reported by 1 and 3 above are significantly higher (e.g. 22Mbps and 11Mbps, respectively), and digitalconcerthall can stream satisfactorily. I have no trouble streaming from Amazon or Netflix regardless of the time of the day. My questions are: 1) Why does the Q1000 configurator consistently report 25Mbps, even when the other tests report significantly different results? 2) Why does the time of day make a difference, and why is digitalconcerthall problematic, whereas Amazon and Netflix are not? (I am in AZ, and the nearest digitalconcerthall server is in CA) 3) Why are the bandwidth results for each test so different from each other? Which test is the most meaningful? 4) When I invoke digital concert hall application on our blu-ray player, the quality of the download will be consistent for the entire session. It will either be perfect, or it will be interrupted/paused at periodic intervals. The performance neither degrades or improves for a session. Is this because the bandwidth of this connection is negotiated and maintained when I use the application? 5) This issue began in early December after months of perfection with digitalconcerthall at all. What are the reasons that such a problem could just begin after months of flawless performance? (I realize that answers will require educated speculation.) (I am also in communication with digitalconcerthall, who is suggesting, "try this," and "try that" with no change. I have a single, non-bonded, line.) thanks Keith Glendale AZ USA

I have read references here to bridge mode. My Q1000 is connected to another router. Is there an advantage to configuring the Q1000 in bridge mode? If so, how is that done? thanks

Not sure if anyone has or can get any information on this? I see they are running some fiber just a 1/2 mile down the road, hoping they will setup a HUB near so I can upgrade past the 1.5mbps.

[Qwest] DSL stop-sell in rural area | CSR says check in April: Trust them?

$

So there's a DSL stop-sell in a rural Qwest footprint. I know the area's being upgraded because I've seen the trucks and heard things through the grapevine. Several months ago, I was able to get a hold of the CenturyLink regulatory contact for the area and I was told upgrades were coming, but not in 2016. Today a CSR said to call back in April. There's also cable in the area, but they want $1000 for a line extension. I'm not opposed to the $1000, but I hate spending the money if cheaper broadband is a few months away. I'm mixed on whether the info the CSR gave me is accurate. Any opinions?

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I thought I would share the latest in the "Can't get anyone other than CenturyLink" saga. A little backstory - I pay for bonded ADSL 20/2. I've been dealing with slow evening speeds/bandwidth exhaust for about two months now (DL speeds less than 2Mbps for most of the evening). I gave them two months to fix it, but I finally got fed up and called "support". After going through the hour long rigmarole trying to convince them that no, I didn't have a virus, and no, it wasn't my internal wiring, the support person finally acknowledged that there was an issue and scheduled a technician to visit yesterday (12/26/16). As an aside, considering my line stats were fine, there was little a local tech could do since the problem was beyond my individual pair (confirmed with neighbors that their speeds were the same). Well, yesterday came and went with no technician visit. No call, no nothing. Today, I receive a notice in the mail that I am now subscribed to the "Inside Wire Maintenance" package and my monthly bill will increase by $7. At no point in the support call did I commit to that - especially considering my wiring isn't the problem. So - not only did a technician not visit - I got a notice in the mail that my bill was going up because I'm now subscribed to some bullshit service that isn't necessary as the problem clearly isn't with my wiring. Long story short - I've gotten them to remove the wire maintenance package, but they have no record of a technician being scheduled, so I'm back to square one. Does that sound about right, fellow CenturyLink sufferers?

ASUS RT-AC87U in Seattle CL Gig not getting full speed?

Previously had CL gigabit service at my old home and used an ERL with an ASUS 68U as a WAP. We recently sold that home and along with it my ERL, long story for another day. At the new home, we had CL install gigabit service before we moved in. Since then we started noticing the router was inconsistent with speeds under load so I asked to get a C2100 unit. Same issues with that unit but it had a little more speed than the one prior to it. I found a good deal on a RT-AC87U unit for $50.00 brand new and picked it up tonight. I got it installed and flashed it with the latest Merlin firmware. Then reset the flash and set it up without any issues. As soon as I tagged the VLAN and put in the PPPOE information the connection came online. The problem is I cannot get more than about 300M speed over gigabit. I poked around the site and made sure the setting for multi-cast and such were set but it seems I am stuck at this speed. Is there some setting I am overlooking? I can pull the info from NVRAM if you need to see a specific value?

Fiber upgrade?

Here in Central Missouri, there have been numerous trucks laying and pulling fiber all over Phelps County. My father asked what it was for, and they said TV, phone, and Internet. Would this be gigabit possibly? Or am I dreaming? They are doing this in town, and in the county for miles in each direction which already had DSL before. Some pics of the new boxes attached if it helps.

Your thoughts on a possible upstream increase here

$

First post! I just increased from single 20/.896M which auto over-provisioned to 26.112/896M, to Pair Bonding 40/2M. When I talked to sales, and explained I needed more Upstream BW, she was confident she could get me PB 40/40M. When the two techs came to install, they never heard of a 40/40. But got me 40/2. I wish I would have asked them at that time if they felt I would be able to squeeze PB 40/5M out of it. Estimated distance 5136 feet (DSL1) / 5448 (DSL2). Have small FEC count but no CRC’s seen yet since install 10 days ago. 3 feet of Cat5 from NID to biscuit jack then straight into C2000T. Bonding improved upstream performance, but with multiple VPN sessions and pushing up stream files, I would appreciate a little more, hoping for maybe PB 40/5M or any over-provisioning if possible. The downstream BW is fine and never was an issue at 26.112M. However, would appreciate any comments on that too for future, for when we get Prism here. I’m in the 30-day period if that helps, and if you think it is better than a borderline chance I could get an increase, just how would I go about requesting a possible upstream increase, or over-provisioning? - Repair call, sales call, etc.?

Modem Statistics (MdmStats)

$

MdmStats is a program to monitor and display statistics available from CenturyLink VDSL modems (C1000A, C1100Z, C2000T, C2100T, and possibly others). Statistics include downstream and upstream Data Rate, SNR, Attenuation, Power, FEC Errors, and CRC Errors. These statistics are sampled at 3-second intervals and logged to a file (MdmStats.dat) that can then be displayed in graphical form with MdmGraph, which can be launched from File -> Graph. To use MdmStats, the VDSL modem must have its Telnet interface enabled. Using a web browser, log into the modem and go to Advanced Setup -> Remote Console, select Telnet Enabled, and set the Telnet Password. Then configure MdmStats at Edit -> Options. Prefix should be set to xdslctl if using non-bonded service, xdslctl0 for line 1 of bonded service, or xdslctl1 for line 2 of bonded serice. To have MdmStats run automatically when Windows is booted, create a shortcut to MdmStats.exe in the Startup folder of the Windows Start menu. MdmStats will create an icon in the Windows taskbar system tray/notification area. Moving the mouse pointer over this icon will display current SNR, FEC, and CRC values. Left double-clicking this icon will alternately display and hide the MdmStats program window. Closing the MdmStats window will also hide the program window. To terminate MdmStats, use File -> Exit. Other menu options include: File -> Save : Saves a copy of the most recent Telnet data to MdmStats.txt File -> View : Displays the most recent Telnet data in a scrollable window Edit -> Reset : Resets the modem statistics (FEC/CRC error counters) Help -> About : Displays the program version date. MdmGraph displays SNR levels horizontally while FEC and CRC errors are displayed vertically. Average SNR values and error totals are displayed at the top of graph. The upper scrollbar controls the duration of the data displayed while the lower scrollbar controls the specific time interval. The initial display is the last four hours captured (or less if that much data has not yet been collected).

Performance Degradation

I have 40 Mbps CenturyLink service - speedtest reports around 42 down and 6 up and 15 latency. So I start a backup to google drive from one of my home network computers. The speed degrades to around 13 Mbps down, 2 up and 600+ latency. My backup software reports that it is backing up at a rate around 4.5 Mbps. First, from a totally non-technical point of view, it seems like my speed should only degrade by the 4.5 Mbps backup - true, or not true? Second, my former isp was Comcast and I never noticed this sort of degradation - is this attributable to CenturyLink? Lastly, is there some sort of software tool which might allow me to view network activity and tell me which local ip addresses might be using my bandwidth at the moment? Thanks for any suggestions.

Implementing upload QOS on Technicolor C2100T

I have a Technicolor C2100T with 100/10 service. TLDR: How can I avoid bufferbloat? I get consistent 100+mbps downloads until I saturate my upload bandwidth. I noticed this when I saw that Backblaze was running a backup while I was trying to download. With my previous router, I could cap upload bandwidth to allow for breathing room for ACK/SIN packets, or prioritize those packets above everything else. With the C2100T, I don't understand the DSCP options in the QoS settings. I'm trying to find a way to give ACK/SIN packets the maximum upload priority or to limit uploads to a lower speed. Alternatively, would I just be better off getting 80/40 service so that my upload speeds are less likely to get maxed out? Also, I'm not able to use the C2100T in transparent bridge mode because I have PRISM TV.

[Qwest] Had the annual conversation(s) again today

We've been on Centurylink for a while. Started out with the DSL, landline, cell phones, and Directv with them. They managed to screw that up to the point where, one at a time, we pulled everything away but the DSL. That's the only thing we still have with them... And, it's been OK. We had some discount that fell off, and the bill for basic, normal, 12MB/s DSL went from 19.95/mo to $46+. Called. Got a guy that was about as disinterested as possible. Called back. Got a guy that could get it DOWN to just $38 + all the BS fees. Called back. Got a different guy who could do 2 years for $25/mo + all the BS fees. Anybody have a rational reason why there's such inconsistency with these people... Even better, anyone got a good alternative that's less expensive than this? 'Cause I'd be perfectly happy to say goodbye if there's a better alternative here in sort-of southern MN...

Unable to access Modem input speed

Our modem indicates that it's receiving 9+ mbps coming in but when speed test is run on isolated pc(s) we only get .7 mbps download speed. I have had many conversations with Centurylink tech support even with Microsoft tech support & no one yet has been able to identify the problem. We have a new modem and I've even tried an additional new modem with the same results. We have a new Belkin ethernet cable & running Windows 10 with Malwarebytes & Vipre antivirus installed. We turned off "Updates from more than one place". For a while there were errors building in the modem and apparently they've done some things (switched port, new jumpers, splitters etc.) to solve that. Centurylink rep insisted last night that one of our devices must be causing this. I've isolated two different pc's (and turned off wifi) and still no success. I would appreciate any advice or direction in order to get the full capacity that is available. Thanks,

Problems with CL and YouTube, Wildly Fluctuating Download Speed.

So I just signed up for CL and have had them for about 4 days now. I'll start with saying this: the customer service is a joke. I have had bad experiences with TelCos in the past but CL took it to a whole new level. I was supposed to have braided wire installed and ready to go when I moved in. Tech never came. They were able to get out today and turned out I wasn't even sent the right modem, luckily the office had sent a spare (C2000T). I was never told that there was a $60 install fee, which they waived luckily, but it took 3 departments and an hour to get it as well as the price of the service fixed. Anyway, with the standard service I was paying for 40/5 and getting 25/5. Not happy. The new braided connection seemed good at first, but when everyone started coming home this afternoon I guess things got a little crowded and I saw speeds anywhere from 15 to 36Mbps. The upload was a constant 16-18Mbps however (paying for 40/20). There also seems to be a big issue with buffering and YouTube with CL. My previous ISP (Charter) never had any issues with YT, however it seems I'm not alone and this is common with CL. I'm not even going crazy and trying to stream 4K video; it'll sit there and buffer while playing 360p. Sometimes it just stops buffering and I'll have to start the stream over again. And better hope that no one tries to do anything on the same network, because even something as simple as checking email interrupts the stream. Is there anything that can be done to fix this? I'm about ready to take all this equipment back and cancel it while I have 30 days and just got with the local Cable Co, but I haven't heard great things about them either.
