[Qwest] data loss Centurylink C2000T

About a year ago I started with Centuryling, with a bonded DSL service (20/3 Mbps). They gave me a C2000T modem. After I switched, I noticed that I had some issues with Windows updates (many of them would fail), but I didn't worry too much about it. Later I set the modem into "transparent mode", but that didn't help either. Recently I made an interesting discovery. I thought that perhaps there were signals on the line that shouldnt be there And I thought that I could perhaps filter them out. The filtre I put on actually blocked one of the DSL lines, so my speed dropped to half BUT the data corruption was gone. Subsequently I changed the mtu on my Netgear router to 1400, but that has not improved things. So, I am in a situation where I can have half speed and no data corruption, or full speed with issues. Centurylink tested my line to their switch and even istalled new "bonding blocks" (??) at my house, but that didn't change anything. So I am back to playing with my devices. The fact that when I block one DSL line everything works fine (i.e., I change something between the incoming line and the modem) seems to indicate to me that it is a setting in the modem. So I have a couple of questions: 1) tagged vs. untagged: When I put my modem in bridging mode I have 3 options: bridging mode, bridging mode tagged-0, bridging mode untagged. Right now I am using it in plain "bridging mode" and it works as described. When I put it in "bridging mode-0" my router does not seem to get through (no connection). What are the differences between these modes, and which one should I use? 2) I assume that the mtu I set on my router is the one that is being used to transmit data, and I don't need to set any mtu on the bridged modem, right? If I do, where do I do that in bridged mode? And would reducing the mtu further than 1400 possibly resolve my data corruption issue? What is a safe number to try? Any other suggestions I can try?

[CenturyTel] DSL disconnects

Hi. I live in rural Colorado and have a 1.5/898 Centurylink dsl connection which has been having disconnects. When it disconnects I use the dsl modem/router utility which reports everything works but that the dns fails. I got a new Zyxel c1100z modem and had a service call. The technician said that all was good at my end but that the local connection for the neighborhood was maxxed out. He said he moved my connection to a different port. He said it was connected on that end by bundled T1 lines. He also said I could get a dedicated T1. I am still getting disconnections but sometimes it works well for long periods. Rebooting reestablishes the connection. So my question is what I should do next. I'm fine with the speed I have but I don't want to live with the drops. Is there anything I can say that will get Centurylink to upgrade the link? The tech did not seem hopeful. Does my problem have anything to do with dns? Would a static ip address on my end solve it? Would a T1 connection really be more reliable if runs through the same equipment? Thanks.

IPV6 Issues

I am setup for IPV6 over PPOE via GPON 1 Gig with an asus router on merlin. I have IPV6 setup as: Tunnel 6rd Ipv6 Prefix - 2602:: IPv6 Prefix Length - 24 IPv4 Border Router - 205.171.2.64 Tunnel TTL - 255 IPv6 DNS Server 1 - 2001:428::1 IPv6 DNS Server 2 - 2001:428::2 Router advertisement is enabled. Everytime I do an IPV6 test, it fails. What am I missing?

GPON Light levels

This maybe something that a CL tech can answer, but how often do you clean fibers from a customer's homes? Is there any way to tell what the light level is and what is a good light level and when you need to roll out to do a fiber cleaning? I'm sure this is probably the first time this has been asked.

Thinking about getting service

I am trying to figure out what speeds are available at my house. When I go to the CL site they offer 20/2 on small business and a couple different options on the residential side but max is 20mb as well without Prism TV. I called in to verify things and the rep said that if I signed up for bonded service, that they could double my upload to 2mb. To me bonded service would be 40/4 no? CL seems to offer so many different permutations of speeds. Just not sure what is actually possible.

CenturyLink VOIP reporting incorrect name on out going calls

I just spent an hour talking to a Century Link Technical Support supervisor regarding a problem we are having. When we call people outside of our Century Link service area the wrong caller ID is being reported. Most of the 2 million people in our area ( including (E-911) is not Century Link). So this is a big issue. The solution that Century Link Recommended was for us to call all the telephone carriers to report the incorrect caller ID and have them change their database! What a bunch of crap! If a family member dies due to E-911 getting the incorrect Caller ID they have a huge problem in my opinion! We had Verizon/Frontier for 30 years and never had any issues. There has to be another solution to the caller ID issue....anyone have any ideas?

A good DSL modem without router for CL?

I have a PK5001Z modem with a Linksys 1200AC router. The modem will drop over half speed often to where I can't stream and sometimes not even surf web. Have to always reboot modem. What would be a good modem only being I have a decent router? Or gateway? Which ever I need? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.....

ZyXel 1000z Restart Problem

We've been with CenturyLink at this location for about a year and periodically (every week or two) we will lose internet which is always correctable by power cycling the modem. CenturyLink support has told me this is just the way it works. Is there a solution to this: 1. Static IP ($20 per month more) 2. Get a different modem 3. Figure out a way to automatically power cycle the modem. My concern is that if this happens while we are away from home, then I will not have access to my home network, security system, etc. Any other ideas?

[Embarq] Line or DSLAM module intermittent problem

Well I've gone a little over a year with a stable DSL connection and apparently either one of the terminations between my house has been disturbed/line problem, or the DSLAM port has an intermittent problem. I've been putting up with it for about a month now and I'd call for service but past experience tells me that I'm going to be in a fight to get a tech sent that will take the time to resolve the problem and I'm just too old and grumpy to do that anymore.

gigabit in Las Vegas (The Ogden)

Anyone know (for sure) if you can get Centurylink gigabit at The Ogden (big high rise condo building) in Las Vegas? 150 N Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89101 The Centurylink website sometimes says YES and sometimes says NO (depending on the day). I called the condo building manager and he didn't know. If the answer is YES, does anyone know how the building is fed? How does Centurylink feed a whole building full of gigabit customers? Would it really be a separate fiber per customer, with a separate ONT per customer? The building has both Centurylink and Cox, but Cox is not a good option for me because of the data cap and the slow upload speed. I'm thinking about buying a condo there, but I'd only do it if I was sure that I could get 1000/1000 with no data cap. I don't currently live in Nevada, so it's not like I can just drive over there and ask some of the tenants.

Data Caps?

I got a letter Saturday morning. stating that they will now be enforcing data caps in my area starting august first. has anyone else received a letter from CenturyLink stating that there area will be apart of there usage based "trial" service. from my understanding data caps are just another way for company to get revenue my area is in Yakima Wa.

SLED in phone box? streaming issues, new line.

Hi, we had many issues with both phone/internet, the CL techs said indoor quad wiring was bad. They bypassed it, installing a new line to a plate through an outside wall close to phone box. I asked if could have two jacks on the plate, one for router, one for phone, to avoid going through router so not to lose phone signal if reboot router. Was told that wasn't a good idea, and not to worry since I wouldn't lose signal, so here I thought he'd do it his way, with one jack, but at the end, he said "I did it the way you wanted and put two". I said Wait, I thought you said that was a bad idea so thought you were going to do it your way? He answered that he put a SLED out in the phone box. He said one jack I could ONLY use for the router, and the other ONLY for the phone. He answered my question that he was "sure" it wouldn't negatively affect either our phone or internet service at all. We have 40MB service. Now we are having some weird stuff happening with video streaming. Netflix will have random total freezup in the middle of a movie. Or else Netflix or Amazon will say "loading" forever (so basically freezing up as well) Was the way he did the wiring with this "SLED" acceptable standards, or could it be causing my problems which we've never had before.

Small Business Fiber Qoute

Hello, We just got this small business quote for CL fiber: Cisco Routers (Purchase with Maintenance included) Cisco 3925 (For circuits up to 100Mb): $ 12,420.02 Cisco 4431 (For circuits up to 1000Mb): $ 14,525.19 Internet Circuit Options 50Mb: $ 1,457/Month 100Mb: $ 2,095/Month 500Mb: $ 5,265/Month 1000Mb: $ 5,545/Month Pricing based on 36-month Term How in the world did they come up with these prices? Why would they think I need that router for around a 10 person business? These prices come no where near their online business prices. Just looking for some input before I call them back. We currently have DSL. It goes from a modem to a firewall to a couple of switches and then hardwired to different rooms and one Wi-Fi access point. What kind of set up would I need for have for centurylink fiber ( ONT-modem-switch-wireless AP)?

How to almost use any router with CenturyLink's 1 Gig Internet!

So I have CenturyLink's 1 gigabit Internet. One of the biggest complaints I've seen around the Internet over the last year or so is that it's really difficult to use the router of your choice with their service. CenturyLink provides some pretty awful equipment with their gigabit Internet service. Wireless-N router. Seriously? The 2 biggest problems I see are the VLAN 201 issue where CL requires you to put a VLAN 201 on the Internet/WAN port of our router. A lot of consumer routers don't support this, or you have to flash custom firmware, etc. And the 2nd biggest problem is consumer routers not being able to download up to the full gigabit speed. Some routers cap out at 300Mbps - 500Mbps. I FINALLY HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION! Between the 2 problems mentioned above, my steps below completely solve th VLAN 201 issue. Now I'm not a networking person, so maybe this seems pretty obvious to some of you. However, over my last year of research, I have not seen this mentioned anywhere on the Internet. I finally found this info on DD-WRT forum website by someone who goes by the username "JAMESMTL." He suggested to a user "why don't you just buy a managed switch and create a VLAN 201 on it." I seriously thought to myself, "is that all it takes to finally fix this VLAN 201 issue once and for all?" Absolutely! So here's the switch I bought off of Amazon "NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105Ev2 5-Port Gigabit Web Managed (Plus) Switch (GS105Ev2)" I got it for roughly $40. Once I got the switch in the mail, it was pretty much just configuring the switch with VLANs 201 on ports 1 and 2. This way the managed switch handles the VLAN 201 issue and then you can almost use any router you want with your CenturyLink service! Keep in mind, I think you will still have to have a pretty new and kick-butt router, because the router needs to have decent hardware so it can download almost gigabit speeds. I think it's called "NAT acceleration?" From what I've leared online over the last year or so, some routers write their firmware to take advance of this. It's a mixture of hardware/software. If you're going to try and use an old router from a couple years ago, you may run into the 2nd biggest problem I've mentioned above. Your router may cap out download speeds of 300Mbps - 500Mbps. 2 routers I have tested behind my managed switch, are Asus AC3100 and the Netgear Orbi that just came out last month. Both routers performed excellent in speed tests! I was able to achieve 900+Mbps. Now on to the good stuff! Configuring the Netgear ProSafe GS105Ev2! -------------------===============------------------- In a nutshell, this is essentially how your network is going to setup with the managed switch: switch port 1 -> The ethernet cord going from your ONT box is to be plugged into port 1 on the managed switch. switch port 2 -> The ethernet cord going from port 2 of the managed switch will plug into the WAN (or Internet) port on the back of your router. switch port 3 -> The ethernet cord going from port 3 should plug into your computer's Ethernet port so you can access the switch's admin panel to configure it. STEPS TO CONFIGURE THE SWITCH WITH VLAN 201: So what you're going to do is open the Netgear Utility program to manage this switch. 1. Disable DHCP on the switch, as your router will be handling DHCP. You'll do this by clicking on 'IP Settings' after the utility program discovers your switch. 2. Make sure the switch is on the same subnet as your router. My default router's gateway is 192.168.1.1, therefore, after I disabled DHCP on the switch, the Netgear utility program assigned the switch an IP address of 192.168.1.15. Perfect! Now the Netgear switch is on the same IP subnet as my router. Apply the settings! Now it's time to go into the switch and configure it! 3. Click the VLAN tab in the Netgear configuration utility program. 4. Click on 802.1Q 5. Click on 'Advanced' 6. Enable Advanced 802.1Q 7. Create a VLAN ID with the value '201' 8. Now click on the 'VLAN Membership' link on the left-hand side. 9. In the 'VLAN Identifier' drop-down list, select 201 10. Click on the white box right below 01 port until the letter 'T' is displayed. (T stands for 'tagged.' Port 1 is going to be 201 Tagged.) 11. Click on the white box right below 02 port until the letter 'U' is displayed. (U stands for 'untagged.' Port 2 is going to be 201 Untagged.) 12. Click on the white boxes below the rest of the ports (ports 3, 4, and 5) until there is nothing displayed in the boxes. 13. Click 'Apply' to save your changes. 14. Finally, click 'port PVID' on the left-hand side. 15. Put a check-mark next to Port 01 and Port 02. Assign them both a PVID of 201. Click 'Apply' to save your changes. 16. Configure your home router with your CenturyLink's PPPoE credentials. You can get this info by calling CenturyLink if needed. However, most of us should have received this info from our technician when they installed our Internet. Once you do this, your Internet light on your router should turn green (or whatever color it turns to indicate it's receiving a good Internet connection!) 17. Now disconnect the ethernet cord going from port 3 of the switch to your computer. You now need to plug an ethernet cord into your desktop's LAN port and plug the other end into a port on the back of your router (your desktop needs Internet access after all!) 18. (Optional Step) If you want to be able to access the Netgear's admin panel later on in case you ever need to make changes, then plug an Ethernet cord into port 3 on the back of your managed switch, and plug the other end of ethernet cord into a free port on the back of your router. REMINDER!: If you are using a router that does by chance allow you to set a VLAN 201 on the WAN/Internet port (like a lot of Asus routers) don't forget to go and remove that now! Your managed switch will be handling the VLAN 201 tagging from now on :-) YOU'RE DONE! Your $30-40 managed switch is now configured with VLAN 201 so you can now use ANY router with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet (as long as the router supports PPPoE, which most do.) I know this seems like a lengthy process, but it's actually not. I want to say I spent anywhere from 45 minutes - 1 hour tops! I'm not an expert, but I'm also not a novice. If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer! So to wrap it up. What does this work-around provide? It will allow you to use the router of your choice with your CenturyLink gigabit Internet service. You don't have to worry about flashing custom firmwares to routers. You don't have to worry about finding a router that allows you to creat VLANs on the Internet/WAN port, etc. The Netgear managed switch takes care of this! Hope this helps!

[Embarq] Looking for a good community to help with non-Centurylink modems

Hi, guys. I'm looking into "taking the plunge" and buying my own modem/router outside of the Centurylink-supported modems/routers. I know that should I do that, Centurylink won't support any issues with the modem/router should I have problems, so I'm looking to find a good, active, helpful community to both help me research a good modem/router for my needs and to help when things go awry. Have I come to the right place? :) Could you maybe offer a couple of other good forums that I might look into? Thanks

On the topic of auto-pay

I think I've figured that one out, because twice now I've miscalculated the expiration of my 'promotional' pricing and not called in to renew it before the deadline. And that means twice I've paid more than double the promotional rate for a month of service, $72 for 10M/.875 However, depending on your viewpoint, the extra $35 may be worth putting off going through the brain splitting hard sell spiel to get phone/TV/Tablet/Meh for 30 more days. But what I'm wondering is that given I'm supposedly getting a discount for going paperless with Auto-Pay, does that mean the expired promotional rate would be closer to $90 a month for ten-meg naked service or is the paperless discount 100% horseshit?

[Qwest] Use Different DNS Servers With Fiber Connection?

$

Hello, I bought a Nighthawk router and it's setup to do VLAN tagging and doesn't require me to use the provided CenturyLink router. I even called CenturyLink to try and turn off VLAN tagging and was told they don't do that anymore so I had to buy another router to do the VLAN tagging. The issue is that when I change the DNS servers on the Nighthawk, since I prefer to use OpenDNS, it doesn't work. The router will try to login with my Username and Password but it will not work unless I use CenturyLink DNS servers. Is there a way around this at all? I would rather have my router use those DNS servers because I find that they are faster than the default CenturyLink ones.

two - pair bonded 20/2 connections - looking for reviews/advice

Curious, has anyone gone the route of adding a 2nd pair bonded connection? I've had a 20/2 connection that has been performing well. I am looking to increase my bandwidth with a second 20/2 connection. Had anyone done this? I plan to use my Cisco RV320 dual WAN router and it appears it should perform well. Two questions: - has anyone done this (above)? Anything to watch out for? - i only have three twisted pair lines from the curb to my house. Have you had to pay to have that replaced to get a 4th pair in the ground? I am about 8000' from the DSLAM, so a 20/2 or a single 12/.896 is the best I can get at my place. Thanks.
