Considering switching to CL HSI with Prism TV - worth it?

$

I know there are a ton of complaints here about CL's legacy DSL internet service and even the higher speed traditional DSL offerings. However, our home can get Prism TV and internet speeds up to 100 Mbps. I'm assuming this means we are wired for a fiber connection and will get our internet and TV over a fiber connection and not the old DLS lines. That correct? Anyone have CL fiber internet and/or Prism TV and have any complaints about it? The sales rep I chatted with online said that with Prism TV, there are no data caps at all. He also told me that I can use my own router. All I would have to do is turn off the router functionality of the CL provided modem, and hook up my own router. Can anyone confirm if what the CL rep said about no caps and use of own router is true? Also, is the IP address they assign a static one? Thanks. J

Curious Problem..

My girlfriends parents live at the edge of CL coverage and for a long time had the 1.5mbs package. Always a stable connection too. Recently their 660 series modem died and CL sent them the Pk5001z which works but it never syncs better than 500/500.. It feels much slower than that as well.. Websites take forever to load and Netflix buffers all the time. I've tried about everything I know of and CL of course doesn't think there is a problem. I'm trying to find my old 660 modem for them to try or buy one if I can't find mine. Any ideas?

c1100z wifi radio weak, drops out

I've had this Centurylink branded c1100z wifi router for a month and I've had problems throughout. The wifi radio has always been flaky, dropping signal and fluctuating signal. At first I thought it was interference for adjoining homes on same or nearby channel. I've tried every channel and it still drops out now to the point where it just puts out a consistently weak signal that is weaker than my neighbors signal. I tried rebooting, resetting, changing the power output, tried every channel. I believe the wifi radio is fried. I've never heard of this happening before. I swapped it out for an old Netgear wnr2000v3 I had lying around and it works perfectly. How can a brand new wifi router be so crappy? Now I have to deal with Centurylink trying to get this piece of crap replaced. Any ideas why my wifi radio died? Could having it placed close to my microwave oven fried it?

I feel like I wasted my money on the c1100z

Come to find out, I really didn't need this thing. My Centurylink 40Mbps comes to my house on fiber into a box mounted on the side of my house that converts it to a 1 gig ethernet line distributed to a wall jack that plugs into the lan/wan jack of the c1100z. When the wifi radio went bad in it, any wifi router will do the same job. Now I'm stuck with this thing I discovered I really didn't need and I'm out $99 which I could have spent on a much better wifi router. I'm not sure if they give you the option to decline it but I would have asked if I had known I didn't need it.

Centurylink broadband taxes?

i just recently signed on to Centurylink DSL service; so now i have a phone+internet bundle. The first bill came the other day... i was under the impression that there were no taxes allowed on broadband service. And also, the amount implied by the charge, e.g. State sales at 5.6% becoming $0.82 implies a taxable amount of $14.65 -- i have no idea where they pulled that amount from. It's more than that. I am aware of "Internet Cost Recovery Fee $1.99" per month, and that's a totally dishonest charge; but I presume they are legally allowed to charge whatever they want (but can't just conjure up / claim taxes). Taxes, Fees & Surcharges Internet Service State Sales at 5.6% 0.82 County Sales at .7% 0.10 City Sales at 2.3% 0.34 Local Phone Service Federal Excise at 3% 1.59 State Sales at 5.6% 2.71 County Sales at .7% 0.35 City Sales at 4.7% 2.25 State 911 at $0.20 per access line 0.20 Arizona Universal Service Fund at $0.01 per line 0.01 Federal Universal Serv Fund at 17.9% 1.41 Telecommunication Relay Service Fund at 1.1% 0.18 Facility Relocation Cost Recovery Fee at $0.80 per access line 0.80 Regulatory Surcharge at .19% 0.05 Taxes, Fees & Surcharges Total $10.81

ONT problems

I have a gigabit fiber install with the internal ONT. CL had to replace the ONT a couple months ago after it quit working and now this new one appears to be malfunctioning and behaving the same as the last one. Has anyone else had an issue with the internal ONT? Tech is coming tomorrow morning and Customer service isn't very helpful. My model is the adtran ta324.

Centurylink physical network architecture?

$

I'm curious about Centurylink's physical network architecture in;my neighborhood.... according to the widget on their website, my neighborhood gets only 7 or 12mbps download max; which is what i currently and just recently signed up for. (it gets more like 14mpbs actually so i guess that makes me happy). Prism is also available, which is what got me to thinking It is VDSL (to be more specific, it says it's "VDSL2 - 8A") according to my modem; and also in case it means anything, the modem says the length is 2900 feet. Anyway, I was chatting with the retention rep on the phone because i wanted to drop my phone line and just have internet. He mentioned i could get a prism tv bundle, which i wasn't interested in, but i asked why i was stuck at 12mbps service if there was fiber somewhere(?). Upon checking, he said i could have a max 20mpbs, that would require a "propietary" modem, and a technician install (which were free on promo) for an extra $5/mo I'm sortof adverse to change and my 12mpbs seems to work just fine so i didn't go that route. Another neighborhood where my buddy lives not far away has 7/12/20/40 mbps available internet speeds (as well as prism tv), according to CL's site. So what's going on physically; where does the fiber go/stop (at the pedestal?); why would one place be stuck on 12 (or 20?) and the other be 40? Another possible clue is my neighborhood was new in 1990, and it has not been obviously re-plumbed. And a number of surround, slightly older (mid-1980s) seem to have been obviously dug up by CL.

Change LD provider of Pure Broadband phone line

One topic that's come up in the past is the fact that CenturyLink's "Pure Broadband" still includes a phone that receives incoming calls and has the ability to call 911. Those of us with this setup still end up paying 911 taxes, etc. every month for a phone line we don't use. I was wondering today what would happen if I go to a company like Pioneer Telephone and switch the local toll and long distance providers from CenturyLink to them? Would that make this useful phone line useful again? And, if so, would CenturyLink notice the change and then start charging me new fees because they would now consider it a "real" phone line? It's confusing for me as to why I even need this line since I have GPON fiber but since it's forced down my throat and I have to pay taxes and fees on it then it would be great if I could at least make it somewhat useful...

Centurylink FUSF Fraud on Internet + VoIP Bundles

$

Here's the story: I run a small business and signed up for Centurylink's Fiber+ service offered at my office building (since the fiber was already there). After over 2 months of waiting I finally got it installed last year in December. My Fiber+ service provides: 1. 500 Megabit Internet connection delivered to my office via ethernet connection 2. One VoIP line Monthly Charge is $496.00 In a nice chart emailed to me by the salesman, it showed speeds from 200Mbps to 1Gbps -- all including one VoIP line and estimated taxes of $15.00. Also I was told that there were NO Federal Universal Service Fund (USF) fees for the internet portion (or data use) except for the VoIP line (which uses practically no data). Well after the free 3 months provided, I got a bill for $562 -- which means I am being charged $65.34 in "Other Fees." Most of it is under the "Federal Universal Service Fund" column -- which is a whopping $53.58. They value the VoIP line at $25.00 -- but my FUSF fees are twice as much! We rarely use the line anyway - because it is unreliable. Now -- going on almost 45 days -- passed around to Regional Sales Managers to Legal Counsel to Billing Specialist to Regulatory Specialist (at least 12 different people) -- they finally came to a conclusion. I've attached a copy of the email. Look at their explanation of the charge and how they plan to correct my particular account (although nothing has been done as of this post). I view this explanation as "business as usual" and that it was not a mistake. If you have business internet with Centurylink bundled with a POTS or VoIP line -- you are probably being charged at least a 10% fee in the name of the Federal Universal Service Fund (FUSF) -- which is fraud. My case was originally being handled by Oregon PUC -- but they decided to send it to the OR Dept of Justice Fraud Division. Please contact me if you are in the same boat. Take a look at your bills -- and see how much money you are owed.

Wiring to NID

This may seem simple to most of you but here's what I'm wanting to do. I want to run Cat5e directly from my NID to the back of my modem no splices or junction boxes. Just one wire from the NID to the modem. I have pair bonded service so my questions are 1.Will this work? 2.If so how do I go about this? Not much luck with Google. Thanks!

CenturyLink won't go into crawlspace?

Since October of last year I've been dealing with trying to get a replacement line. The box is located on the side of my garage, and the wiring between it and the house stopped working (likely due to incorrect installation according to the tech who came at the time). Unfortunately, the area above that line has been paved over for a patio, so it's no longer accessible. The technician ran a temporary line from a nearby pole down into the crawlspace where all the phone wiring is located, and I've been using that ever since. Fast forward to today, contractors finally came and dug the new ground line. It's not connected yet as CenturyLink has to come and do it, and probably install a new box in that location as well. I've been told by techs, however, that CenturyLink technicians are not allowed to go into crawlspaces. As said, all of the phone wiring for my house (originally installed by Qwest) is located in the crawlspace. How big of a battle am I going to be in for trying to get them to do this? Has anybody else dealt with this? I want an idea of what to expect. Are they actually going to refuse to finish connecting me, or replacing the temp line when it eventually dies? The first tech they sent back in October went into the crawlspace no problem, so I'm not sure what the deal is. Am I seriously going to end up without internet if they refuse to go under the house? I had a different tech basically tell me the wiring under the house isn't CenturyLink's responsibility - even though Qwest, whom they bought out, installed it - so I'm worried this is going to turn into a huge problem.

Thinking about replacing my CL C1000A

I live in Anthem, AZ (north of Phoenix). I'm not in the Country Club so don't have the 1G service available. When I had my CL VDSL2 service installed a little over a year ago I bought the C1000A rather than rent. I pay for 40/5 service but have been getting 50/5 since installation. Because of where the modem is located I use the wireless and router portions as well. There isn't room for additional equipment there. It seems to be working well enough except for the last couple of months I can't login to the web interface. Actually, I can login but can't go to any of the other pages without getting bumped back to the login page. It will usually work for a short while after a reboot. I suspect that heating due to it's location may be a cause. I've seen comments online that seem to support this. Rather than wait till it dies completely and then scramble for a replacement, I'm thinking of replacing it now. Looking for recommendations for a replacement that, maybe, isn't so heat sensitive. I see Best Buy and Frys both have a couple of Netgears starting at $200. I don't see any option on my CL online account to purchase a new modem. Suggestions?

[CenturyTel] Is there a reason I should change from a Qwest.net service to CL

I have had my Qwest.net account for more years than I can remember, my question is am I missing any benefits of not having a Centurylink address? Also does CL have a news server, it seems news.Qwest.net is not working any longer as of about 6-months ago. One last thing I call CL to see if I can get a faster line speed than the 10Mb line I currently have, especially after seeing the ads for the Gigabit service and I was told "you're lucky we can increase you line speed to 20Mb", Oh Frincking Boy!!! Is this lack of speed because of the lack of signal or distance?

Thinking about Business Class 80 Mbps service?

Hello, I have a few questions for anyone with some advice. I have 40/5, but my C1000A only connects at 30/5. The WIFI is horrendous and completely seems to stop functioning if more then one or two devices connect. We have 4 rooms (Home Offices), each with multiple computers, smartphones and tablets/laptops and 1080p TV's and each office has a streaming media device such as a SHIELD TV or Roku's. The ISP service from CL stinks most of the time, especially in the evenings but I know that is a given when on a home class connection. I want to try and throw better hardware at the issue such as a NETGEAR R7800 MU-MIMO Router, at least if anything for more device stability. However, I am wondering if a upgrade to business class (we have online sales businesses being run out of this house here) 80/10 Mbps would help the situation we are in? And if so, how does that work this far out in the country? I am 1250 feet from the DSLAM, or abouts, and my C1000A connects using VDSL2-8A, PTM-Tagged and the power levels are below. Does the C1000A support 80 Mbps connections? DSL Power SNR: 6 dB 9 dB Attenuation: (DS1)13.9, (DS2)33.5 dB (US1)2.2, (US2)27.8 dB Power: 16.9 dBm 7.8 dBm My question is, is this 80 Mbps the fastest connection my DSLAM can offer us? A couple years ago the person on a CL phone support call told me they could hook me up with 60/30 but I no longer see that option at CL's website either. One more question, would Netflix HD be routed differently if we upgrade to business class, or will Netflix and Youtube still die in the evenings? I am wondering if the business class connection is actually business class service and stuff like Netflix/YouTube streams work 24/7 instead of just working properly in the early mornings like the current 40/5 connection does. We have a home based business here and are willing to pay the higher cost if it really helps us with everything we do. Any advice welcomed. Thanks Best Regards Rod

Will I luck out and get faster speeds?

Just ordered 3mbps to my home due to a promotion on there website. At the time, the website showed this was the only service available to my address. Checked their website again today and they are now listing 7 Mbps and 12 Mbps options only. No listing for the 3 Mbps I signed up for. Question is, will they limit me to just 3 Mbps? Will they throttle me? Or is it possible to be super nice to the technician coming out and ask for the higher speed? My promotion is that I received is $15 dollars cheaper than the higher speeds service offered today.

CL DSL upgrade questions

Hi. I'm a brand new free member here and this will be my first post. I have been doing a little searching but there is just so much info that I can't seem to find a simple answer. (Are there ever any "simple answers anyway?) I am currently paying $55.99 monthly for CL 3M service before any taxes, fees, or discounts and have been experiencing unacceptable lag when watching Hulu, Netflix, etc. so I decided that it's time to upgrade. I discovered that I can upgrade to 20M service and it will ultimately cost pretty much the same as what I'm paying now for 3M service. The trouble is that my Actiontec PK5000 will need to be upgraded. Rather than pay ten bucks a month to lease the Actiontec C1000A that the representative told me I would get from CL, I think I would be better served by just purchasing my own equipment. From what I can find here in the forums, it seems that the Zyxel C1000Z might be the most solid option. I've read that the C1100Z has had some complaints and the Actiontec C1000A is also somewhat unreliable. Is this info reasonably accurate? Since the best service CL offers here in Mountain Home, Idaho (40 miles from Boise) is 20M, That's what I will be going with. Am I correct to assume that since it's 20M, that this is ADSL2+ service here? Is it possible that the 20M service is VDSL2? Does this really matter in my selection of a modem? If I get the Zyxel C1000Z, would it work with both ADSL2+ and VDSL2? I just don't want to assume that I have ADSL2+ and buy a modem, only to discover that I really have VDSL2 and my new modem is not compatible. Next question, what would be the best configuration of equipment to get the most out of my service speed? I have 2 kids that do online gaming and my wife and I watch tons of Netflix and Hulu. I am also known to watch youtube while the kids are gaming and my wife is on Hulu. Should I use the C1000Z as a standalone or should I use it as a modem only with a separate wireless router? I'm totally new to this and hardly even know how to log into the router I have now to make changes to the settings so go slow. I'm pretty smart though so I can usually follow along when there's a motivating reason for me to learn (maximized internet performance).

anyone? and why when I ask to lower my bill, from two different agents, I hear" sure I can help you with that, they ask the questions, ss#, account number ... and look at the bill and immediately say, sorry, I can not do anything to lower your bill. but my next door neighbor uses the same line gets faster internet and pays less. I'm sorry but $100+ per month for a $59 a month plan is wrong and no one can tell me why I'm paying so much for a $59 plan and it just keeps going up and up and up

On going Century Link DSL signal issues

$

I'm posting here since over the years of trying to resolve my issue I frequently end up at this site reading other peoples posts. I have 3 problems I'd really like to address. Two are actual CL technical issues, the 3rd I'm adding in the optimistic hope that a CL Tech will respond and I can talk to a real human. Problem 1: For years I've had problems with my DSL retraining. CL has given me 4 routers, sent a tech multiple times. Every time but one the response is the same, my wiring tests out fine, they claim it's a switch issue at their end and move me to a new port. The one time that was different they claimed there was a bad termination in the field. Sometimes it has seemed their efforts temporarily fixed the issue but only temporarily (or it had no effect at all). Here's a screen shot from DSLStats showing SNR Margin bouncing around throughout the past 24 hours. [att=1] Each of those drops below 10dB SNR Margin result in a retrain. There are periods of very good stability and then the wheels fall off. My personal assumption is that they're just overloaded at the DSLAM at various times but they never admit to it and even if true that doesn't help me much. I have 7mb/s service from CL, I periodically have to call CL and have them reset it to 7 from 2 or 3mb/s. When it's working at 7 it works just fine. Here's a screenshot from later in the day, it shows that once the SNR is stable it's very stable for hours on end. Ironically the stability occurred within minutes of my posting here (technically before or I'd be very suspicious ;) ). I've carefully avoided touching anything for a day so none of the plot structure is due to any action on my part. [att=3] Problem 2: I have a low latency use case and I'm confused as to why the first hop is 45ms and then a more predictable 20+ ms given the geographic separation (Abq to DFW) after that. My assumption is it's somewhat related to the first problem though I've seen comments that it's router based. Here's an image from ping plotter showing the high first hop latency. [att=2] It's nicely stable (when the DSL SNR is good) but I would like that built in 50ms overhead to go away. I currently have a C1000A but the problem existed with other routers like PK style ones (whose model I've forgotten). If it's in fact on my end due to router selection I'd be happy to hear recommendations. Problem 3: I recently remodeled my home. I've relocated all utilties but the DSL to a new pole and service entrance. Repeated phone calls to CL (4 so far) asking that the service be moved to a different pole in the back of the house results in multiple transfers and then a hang up. I'd be happy to upgrade to a higher speed service but only if Problem 1 and Problem 3 are resolved. I refuse to pay more for a faster unstable link that's crossing my front yard. I realize this is more targetted at CL than the regular users here but any suggestions, strategies, input welcome.
