adding a dedicated DSL line

hello, new here from Colorado. thanks for any help or input or any input you can provide. Trying to get more speed from our internet connection (aren't we all ; ) We used to have 20mbps and it was terrible, paying for 40 now and it's better but we're only getting 28 max (was 22 but I updated modem to newest firmware and ISPV6). Would really like to get closer to 32 as we have 2 teenagers , etc. I looked at my NID box and it looks like we have 2 dedicated lines? This goes down into the basement into a "tree" and then feeds all the rooms. 3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 on main floor. We only have 1 landline phone, it's on the 1st floor (yes there's a filter) and the router is using 1 of the jacks on 2nd floor (no filter). I would like to hook up the wireless router right at the basement "tree" and give it it's own dedicated hard line and skip all the house wiring. Or, if I'm completely off base what other course of action do you recommend and how to do it? Call CEntlink and pay for a service call? Call some local guy out of the penny adverts? here's a pic of the 2 boxes (black cables on right of phone tree are cable tv Coax I think). house was built in 1999

Seattle, WA - Queen Anne getting GB installed 1/20 - Questions!?

Question: From the ONT to the router, is a VLAN required? My current VPN router cannot do VLAN tagging. Can they set the VLAN native at the ONT or remove it or is it required? If I have to toss my current VPN router what is everyone else using? I need high bandwidth so GB is a must and most VPN routers are very slow on either egress or ingress which is not an option. Summary: 1/20 CL is coming to install GB service. I previously had Comcast and then moved to Wave when they became available. Had them for about a year and they have been good with very few outages or problems. My fiance and I work from home. I am a Cloud Evangelist for Red Hat and surely can use any and all bandwidth I can consume. Yes, Cloud Evangelist is my title and I assure you it's a real thing and not something I made up. Currently, I have my coax feeding into an SB6190 which then connects to my VPN router. From there I split up the network to each floor of the home and use GB switches and CAT6 on each floor. Pretty simple and straightforward setup. I won't get into specifics like port forwarding, internal VLANS, routing, or QoS and such as that doesn't really matter.

[Prism TV] Prism TV box displays Red X on screen

When I turned on my TV this morning, it worked for about 10 minutes until I got the "Signal lost" message on the screen. I get this pretty often and restarting the box usually fixes it. This time, when the box powered back up, I got this strange cog symbol on the screen with an empty loading bar under it. If I let it sit, eventually that cog is replaced by a small red X in the middle of the screen. At this point the green and red lights on the front of the box start flashing. The other boxes in the house are streaming TV just fine. I've tried restarting the box several times and also the router, neither helped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Assistance required on CenturyLink DSL Modem confusion

Hi. Long time Centurylink DSL customer. We currently have the Actiontec C1000 that Centurylink is suggesting we replace due to it's age and intermitent issues. Last night, tech support mentioned the C1100Z which I think is manufactered by ZyXEL. CenturyLink said we can get it at Best Buy. However, the only model I see on BestBuy.com is the same C1000. I can't even find a C1100Z on ZyXEL website unless the model number used by them is different than what Centurylink markets it as. Any assistance would be great. I just want to make sure I pick up the correct one.

I don't know what to do any more i have taken every possible action to get centurylink to fix this from BBB to FCC and all over the map with techs.I am paying 51$ a month for a 1.5mbs plan that barely runs and has been in permanent bandwidth exhaust since 2008 it just keeps getting worse over the years also its not like i live in an underpopulated area i mean its not the city but there is a crazy amount of houses and people on my road who all are on the same suffering equipment i am and centurylink does not even sell plans out here anymore due to the exhaust even though tons more people would sign up if it was available.I keep calling them every month asking if they have new plans to upgrade or fix exhaust and they never do...do i have any hope? And before anyone says find another provider there is none centurylink is the only isp out here

Centurylink Prism TV billing fiasco

I ordered vacation suspension via chat with Centurylink support person Emmanuel M. on 1/13/16. I have the chat transcript where he confirmed that he could suspend both Prism TV and Internet service, and he confirmed that he did indeed place the order to suspend both services. Today I got a Centurylink bill for Prism TV service for February and March for over $100! This is absurd since my TV service was suspended 1/13/16 (or within 24 hours of then). I get so frustrated with Centurylink, you chat with one rep. they tell you one thing and another tells you something else. I am ready to go back to Comcast (never thought I would say that!) Rather than spend countless time on hold I sent them an email and pasted the chat transcript into it. We'll see if it helps. If anyone from Centurylink can help I would be grateful..

Advice for DSL Demarc connection to modem

I continually get much slower internet speeds than my current service rating, and I am pretty sure it has at least partly to do with not one but two phone cables that are so old that they have no manufacturer's stamp to identify them (we bought the house this way). The part stopping me is that I am confused by how the new wire should terminate at the demarc. Currently, of the four wire pairs (8 total) only one pair (orange and orange/white) is connected inside the box. All the other wiring I've done (which isn't much) has required two active pairs. If you look at the pictures attached, you can see two mini boxes at the top right of the demarc box. Only the top is connected to the house. The bottom has two wires, a blue and white, coming in from the left side of the box, but nothing going into the house. The other wire seen in the picture going into the house is a ground, which means one wired pair is the only actual line into and out of my house. Is the second pair (green and green/white) supposed to be connected to the bottom mini box? If not, should I just replace the orange and orange/white that is currently there with the new cable that I will run all the way to the modem? Advice most welcome!

Connecting Prism TV set-top box to a new router

Hi, I recently switched my CenturyLink Modem to bridge mode and I'm using my own router for everything. I have 2 PRISM TV boxes that are currently using wired connections to my router. I wanted to use the wireless connection on the non DVR box, but it still connects to the wireless on the CenturyLink router/modem and it can't see my DVR box because they are on different networks. I've tried looking at all of the settings screens and I don't see a way to change which router the set-top box is connected to or re-start the WPS process. Any ideas?

[Qwest] Slow Wired Speed on New C1100Z

$

Quick background: I have CenturyLink 20 Mbps DSL service. I had a Qwest M1000 modem for a long time (no wireless module) and a separate wireless router. CenturyLink's speed test shows I consistently connected at 17.5 Mbps via wired connection. The M1000 died and was replaced with a C1100Z about three months ago. I ditched the router and am using just the C1100Z. I've noticed pages on my wired desktop aren't as quick to load and some videos have buffering issues where I never experienced that before. CenturyLink's speed test shows I'm only getting 12.5-13.3 Mbps. If I'm lucky, I might hit 14 Mbps. Here's what puzzles me - my Wi-Fi connections easily get 15-16 Mbps at the far corners of the house. It's just my one wired connection I'm having problems with. Websites that load slowly on my desktop load much snappier on the Wi-Fi laptops in the house. For what it's worth, the desktop, laptops and one tablet all run Windows 8.1. The C1100Z reports an upstream rate of 20.120 Mbps (same as the old M1000). There have been no hardware changes on this computer. No new software. The only changes are monthly Windows security updates. Are there any settings on the C1100Z that I can tweak or is this something I need to call CenturyLink about? I've rebooted the modem, tried new cables and plugged into a different Ethernet port on the back. The C1100Z has the latest firmware (4.12.009.0). Thanks!

Advice needed on DSL issue - intermittent

I am hoping we can get a little advice and what the next steps are. We have spent a LOT of time with CenturyLink support, but continuing to have issues. It's beginning occur almost every other day and driving us crazy. We were upgraded from a 20 to a 40 speed line about 2 months ago. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but our frequent intermittent errors seems to have started since the upgrade. My guess is just a coincidence. The main issue is we cannot access the internet even though all lights on the modem are green. The internet access does NOT work through wireless or an ethernet connection. Most of the time, it will suddenly start to work again after a few minutes without having to unplug the modem. About 1 week ago we called CenturyLink tech support and the front line person said they could see line issues and placed an order for a service tech. She also suggested replacing our Actiontec C1000A with the ZyXel C1000Z. I have ordered a C1000Z from Ebay and should have it this week. This rep also mentioned some authentication issues as well. The service tech showed up on 2/11. Supposedly, he fixed something on the outside of the house. He also moved our C1000A to a different phone port in the house. He said the other one in the office had a more direct connection to the line coming in from outside. In addition, he said my modem was seeing some CRC errors which I found in the admin portal on the modem. Then, on 2/12, the same thing occurred...dead in the water. Called Technical Support again and saw more line errors. When the guy was at our house he said the line should now accept a speed of 50 due to something he fixed outside. The Technical Support person I was on the line with on 2/12 said that could cause errors and changed something so our maximum speed was on at 40. In addition, he noticed our line quality was around 8, but once he changed the speed from 50 to 40, it shot up to 14 which is the expected range. The rep also had us change our wireless channel to 11. Not sure why because this still occurs with an ethernet connection. Now today - 2/14. Same thing occurring. Dead in the water. We have no idea how long it had been going on, but noticed it when we woke up. About 15 minutes later of first trying wifi, it worked again...wth. I logged into the modem and noticed the CRC errors were 4756 which is not right. I called CenturyLink and the rep says there are no problems with the line. It all looks good. We are at a complete loss on next step besides trying the C1000Z that should show up this week. Long story, but looking for some more input. edit Here is the original posting a few days ago when trying to get information on the modem suggested by CenturyLink. Internet Down?

Every couple of days, my internet seems to shut off or something. All the lights on the modem are green but the internet light is off. When this happens, I cannot access the internet wired or wireless, I can't even get to my modem page. So I have to unplug and plug it in again and it starts to work again. Here is what I retrieved from my C1000Z system log 02/14/2016 08:26:24 PM DSL Link Line 0: VDSL2 link down 02/14/2016 08:26:25 PM PPP Link Clear IP addresses. PPP connection DOWN. 02/14/2016 08:26:25 PM PPP Link PPP Clear IP addresses. Connection DOWN. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this issue? I have changed my wifi password and reset everything to default with no avail. Thanks in advance!

Question about CenturyLink Speeds with VDSL and Pair Bonding

$

TL;DR: Can any VDSL connection be bonded? Background: I've had CenturyLink since I moved into my current neighborhood about 6 years ago. Started with an Actiontec GT701-WG modem at 7Mb/? (can't remember what the down speed was, maybe 500ish Kb). Signed up to be notified faster speeds, and eventually got 12Mb/896Kb. I believe I had to do a firmware upgrade on the GT701. Still signed up to be notified for faster speeds, but never heard anything. Recently did a chat with a rep and asked if there was any information or plans for higher speed. I was told 20Mb was now available at my address, but that my modem would need to be upgraded. $100 to buy one from them, plus $60 install. I mentioned that the specs say the GT701 is good for up to 24Mb down, and they said I needed VDSL2 modem. I said I'd look around for my own modem and contact again later. I did a bit of searching here and found that the ZyXEL C1000Z was a fairly high rated modem that seems like it would do what I needed. For me that meant being able to be setup for my current speeds in the mean time, and be able to handle the new service. Found a used one on Craigslist for $20 and got it installed. I also did a bit of reading in general since I hadn't really kept up with DSL technologies for a while. Contacted via chat again and asked about upgrading to a faster speed. They asked me about my current modem and I told them I have the C1000Z. This is what I was told:quote:"Okay, great! Let me see if that is compatible with 20M+, all of the ports for 20M have been taken already. I do see that you will have to pay a tech install charge of $59.99 to upgrade to the 20M+."I then asked about the install charge since I had a working modem and compatible modem. I was told:quote:If the 20M was available, you would be able to upgrade with no tech fees. Since you would have to upgrade to the 20M+, you will have to have a tech come and configure your line for the upgraded speed. With 20M+ you get more than 20M download speed and 5M upload speed. This was actually better news for me, as I didn't realize the upload speed would be 5Mb. I also realize now that it makes sense that they may have to do more work if it means verifying the lines for VDSL, and that if it's wasn't VDSL my older modem would have probably worked just fine. That also got me thinking more about what I had been reading and I was wondering if pair bonding was available to get me to something like 40/5 or 40/10. I also realized that the C1000Z I just got wouldn't work for pair bonding, but I asked if it was available anyway. I was told:quote:You will not be able to do any pair bonded speeds because you are not in a GPON area. Which basically means, fiber Internet is not available at your address. So I agreed to the 20/5 increase and was told it will be a couple weeks out for a tech to do the required upgrade work. I came back here and did some more looking/searching, but I'm still a little unclear on the requirements for pair bonding. Just wondering if what I was told was technically true, policy, or just wrong. Other information that may or may not be useful. I just use the modem/router in transparent bridge mode to feed my own wireless router. My connection from the CenturyLink box on my house to my phone jack is cat5, about 20 feet long to my phone jack, then directly to the modem.

Slow fiber connection in Las Vegas.

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem as me. I have the 100Mbs fiber service but Netflix is awful in the evenings. I had them run fiber all the way into my house because I planned on getting the 1Gbs service but after dealing with their customer service I'm not sure its worth it. I called tech support and he told me that CenturyLink had over sold my area (the South central part of Las Vegas next to Henderson) and that the lines were over saturated. I asked if it would help if I had the 1Gbs service and he said that it would probably just make it worse and that until CenturyLink installs new equipment to handle the load I will have to deal with the slow speeds. After having service with this company for a few months I will be surprised if they are sill in business a few years from now.
