What is this box?

[att=1] Sorry for potato quality image! Had to resort to Google maps since it's late and I'm not in the mood to change out of my jammies so I can sneak into the neighbor's yard for a picture. ;) I know what the green pedestal is, but what is the round silver box? The technician who set up my DSL service said both belong to the phone company but didn't provide more information. I'm curious because something doesn't seem right and this equipment is located where the weirdness is. Customer support and the website told me that DSL service would be available at the address my family and I were moving to. We called after closing to get it set up and they told us it would be impossible since our home was 39,000 feet from the CO. But we knew for a fact that one of our neighbors was getting 10 Mbps. Yeah... okay. Distance. They decided service was actually possible after two months and one regularly updated FCC complaint. The person I talked to said it looked like the tech should be able to get 3-6 Mbps from my line since someone near us is getting 10 Mbps. All the tech could get was 512k when he got out here, so he ran up and down the road for a few hours tweaking stuff. I ended up with 1.5 Mbps after he lowered the voice quality in the area and provisioned it. Aww yeah! Moving data at the speed of snail and price of caviar! (Apologies to the people with land lines!) But seriously, what's up with the house getting 10 Mbps? I pointed straight at it to show how close it was and he had no clue since they were too far from the nearest CO for that to be possible. I let it go for a bit since stepping on a LEGO sounded more enjoyable than calling support again... well, until I saw four trucks out here about a week ago. It was dark and I couldn't see what they were doing, but they were doing something near those boxes. They left at about 8:30p and came back the next day to continue doing whatever they were doing. What could they possibly be doing that would involve three normal trucks and one with a bucket? There weren't any storms or construction going on. Service seemed stable. No department in customer service had any way to tell what sort of work was being done out here. (Surprise! :hmm:) I checked the website to see what the house next door was getting since they had a bunch of trucks over there recently and they are also getting 10 Mbps. The house across the street is like me and only getting 1.5 Mbps. Every other address I tried between my house and the DSLAM said no service available. So what is this box and how could these two homes be getting speeds that are supposedly impossible for our area?

Question about CenturyLink Speeds with VDSL and Pair Bonding

$

TL;DR: Can any VDSL connection be bonded? Background: I've had CenturyLink since I moved into my current neighborhood about 6 years ago. Started with an Actiontec GT701-WG modem at 7Mb/? (can't remember what the down speed was, maybe 500ish Kb). Signed up to be notified faster speeds, and eventually got 12Mb/896Kb. I believe I had to do a firmware upgrade on the GT701. Still signed up to be notified for faster speeds, but never heard anything. Recently did a chat with a rep and asked if there was any information or plans for higher speed. I was told 20Mb was now available at my address, but that my modem would need to be upgraded. $100 to buy one from them, plus $60 install. I mentioned that the specs say the GT701 is good for up to 24Mb down, and they said I needed VDSL2 modem. I said I'd look around for my own modem and contact again later. I did a bit of searching here and found that the ZyXEL C1000Z was a fairly high rated modem that seems like it would do what I needed. For me that meant being able to be setup for my current speeds in the mean time, and be able to handle the new service. Found a used one on Craigslist for $20 and got it installed. I also did a bit of reading in general since I hadn't really kept up with DSL technologies for a while. Contacted via chat again and asked about upgrading to a faster speed. They asked me about my current modem and I told them I have the C1000Z. This is what I was told:quote:"Okay, great! Let me see if that is compatible with 20M+, all of the ports for 20M have been taken already. I do see that you will have to pay a tech install charge of $59.99 to upgrade to the 20M+."I then asked about the install charge since I had a working modem and compatible modem. I was told:quote:If the 20M was available, you would be able to upgrade with no tech fees. Since you would have to upgrade to the 20M+, you will have to have a tech come and configure your line for the upgraded speed. With 20M+ you get more than 20M download speed and 5M upload speed. This was actually better news for me, as I didn't realize the upload speed would be 5Mb. I also realize now that it makes sense that they may have to do more work if it means verifying the lines for VDSL, and that if it's wasn't VDSL my older modem would have probably worked just fine. That also got me thinking more about what I had been reading and I was wondering if pair bonding was available to get me to something like 40/5 or 40/10. I also realized that the C1000Z I just got wouldn't work for pair bonding, but I asked if it was available anyway. I was told:quote:You will not be able to do any pair bonded speeds because you are not in a GPON area. Which basically means, fiber Internet is not available at your address. So I agreed to the 20/5 increase and was told it will be a couple weeks out for a tech to do the required upgrade work. I came back here and did some more looking/searching, but I'm still a little unclear on the requirements for pair bonding. Just wondering if what I was told was technically true, policy, or just wrong. Other information that may or may not be useful. I just use the modem/router in transparent bridge mode to feed my own wireless router. My connection from the CenturyLink box on my house to my phone jack is cat5, about 20 feet long to my phone jack, then directly to the modem.

Convenience Fee??

I've had CenturyLink for almost 3 years now, and I've always paid my bill with my debit card on the CenturyLink web site. I just paid my latest bill, and wasn't really paying attention while going through the process (because it seemed like the same old thing I normally go through) - until I got to the very end where the bill was paid and I noticed they had charged me more than the bill. When I looked closer I noticed they had added a $3.50 "convenience fee" that I've never been charged before. Why a "convenience fee" now when there's never been one before? It's just stupid if you ask me - and if that's how it's going to be going forward, I'll just mail them a check (which I haven't done for ANY bill in YEARS) since a stamp is cheaper.

Ingress TCP 443 is blocked

So it seems that, at least where I am, Centurylink is silently dropping incoming TCP port 443 packets. Does anybody know if this is their official policy or something, and if not, is there a way to ask them to unblock it? Strangely enough, port 80 seems to work, so I don't know why they would block 443. Hesitant to try just calling them because typically it means I'm on hold for upwards of an hour only to reach somebody who doesn't know what the fuck an internet connection is, and everybody from the line workers to the CEO are a bunch of bafoons.

Installation Fee?

I'm looking into the total cost of gigabit fiber in my area (Minneapolis) and I see a $60 one-time installation fee. I called CenturyLink and they said that even though my building was already wired for fiber, a guy had to come in to plug in the modem. This is something I could easily do for free. Is there a way to request a self-install of their modem and waive the installation fee? Better yet, is there a way to buy their service without a modem since I have an Asus router that should work with it directly connected?

[CenturyTel] DSL Status - No Filter Detected

Little over a month ago, a storm took out internet and phone service for a large number of people in our area. Prior to the storm, I had slow service (pay for 795k, usually got between 500 - 600) but it was functional. My service was still out after service was restored to the area. Over the last month, technicians have been out 6 times and have replaced cables, replaced filters, replaced modems and tested signals. They reported that sometimes the dsl was linking up, sometimes it wasn't and frequent 'errors' were being sent down the line. The errors build up until it just drops the line. Most of time, the modem can't connect the dsl (the dsl light is blinking green or sometimes red - and there is no information on the modem's set up page). On the few times it connects, there is a consistent error message. Where it says "DSL Status" sometimes it reads "Poor" in red but most of the time it reads "No filter detected" in red. I pointed it out to the technician and he didn't think it was normal, but wasn't sure what that was in regards to. The obvious was ruled out: there's no filter attached between the dsl and modem and there is a filter on the house alarm (currently, nothing else uses the internet/phone connections.) Anyone have information about what this might mean? I'm starting week 5 of no service and would love to get this worked out!

Routing Issues

Who would I speak to regarding a routing issue with one of CenturyLink's partners? I have relevant data on a particularly troublesome node that's dropping packets, like mad, but tech support is unwilling to look at it and doesn't even seem to understand the nature of the problem. Basically, there's a particular router/node that is dropping packets and causing major connection issues to a particular website; despite reporting this to customer service, they can't seem to understand that it's an issue in between networks and not one that's an issue on either end (mine or the website's end); the best that they managed to get through, after over an hour and half, was merely changing DNS servers (*sigh*). In any event, is there any techs left here, browsing this forums? I have relevant pingplotter data, I just need to get all information+data to the right person so that CenturyLink can inform their routing partner of the issue (I've already tried contacting their routing partner directly to no avail).

This a photo of an ancient closure from the 1930's. I was going to see if anyone could figure it out. It was attached to a pole and weighed a LOT. The Stencil "P1" is the lead address that was used long before 911 was even thought of. Doesn't mean a thing about what is inside.

Updated Minneapolis speed test map

I re-ran the addresses contained in the map in this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29723767-Minneapolis-Centurylink-Speed-map-Including-Fiber-rollout- (Direct link: http://www.easymapmaker.com/map/6347814ae5d946a2fcc4cd60647ca456) New map from data gathered last night: http://www.easymapmaker.com/map/cl_speed_1-15-2015 So there are now traces of gig internet in Hopkins and St. Paul (uncheck everything but 1000 at the bottom to see them). I have a python script that runs the addresses to check their speeds, and I hope to update the map from time to time to see the progression of CL fiber.

Connect America Fund II

Anyone got any idea when Centurylink will begin upgrades from the federal funding CAF II? I have asked both talktous and the online chat and no one could provide any information. I am considering switching to our local wisp but if the upgrades are coming sooner than later I'll wait as the speed the wisp offers is expensive compared to Centurylink for the same speeds. I live in the Hickory area and my residence is in the accepted funding areas according to the fcc website. Thank you for any help! Ps I currently have 1.5mbps/287kbps adsl. Pings are frequently between 60ms to 1500ms. The 1500ms pings are happening even when there is a low load on my connection based on what my router is displaying.

Under the Qwest Wholesale http://www.centurylink.com/iconn/index.html is a link: "Outside Plant and Interoffice Facility Jobs Greater Than $100K Updated monthly. Need help from anyone in Phoenix Metro Area, who has Century Link.

I am having issues with cox communications, and high latency while playing online games. I have a good friend in Tuscon, with comcast who has ~30-35ms better latency then I do, routing to the same servers I am. I have heard in the past that Century Link has much better latency to Riot games, than Cox communications. I am in the process of working with Cox T2.5/Noc Engineering to resolve the issue. A tracert from other ISP that are providing better quality of service will be extremely helpful to me. Short terming potentially resolving the issue with Cox, and long term maybe getting Century Link turned on (already wired for it). All I need is a tracert to Riot games from anyone using Century Link, and not connected via WIFI. (hard line to router/modem only) From Riot's Website support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201752674-Network-System-and-League-of-Legends-Logs Open Command Prompt, and Copy Paste the below line. (tracert 104.160.131.1) > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\Tracert.txt" All I need is the text within the tracert.txt The first 3or so hops can be omitted for security reason if your IP address is present. (really the only thing that matters is the last few hops in the 104.160 range). I appreciate anyone who is able to help. If anyone needs more information please let me know.

Connecting Prism TV set-top box to a new router

Hi, I recently switched my CenturyLink Modem to bridge mode and I'm using my own router for everything. I have 2 PRISM TV boxes that are currently using wired connections to my router. I wanted to use the wireless connection on the non DVR box, but it still connects to the wireless on the CenturyLink router/modem and it can't see my DVR box because they are on different networks. I've tried looking at all of the settings screens and I don't see a way to change which router the set-top box is connected to or re-start the WPS process. Any ideas?

CenturyLink blocking Google DNS for Small Business Customers

I use CL at home and support a small business remotely which used CL small business (in the Portland, OR area). Yesterday I was informed by the small business, "the Internet" was out. This morning after troubleshooting I've come to the conclusion that CL has started blocking DNS traffic to Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, port 53 only) at 63.158.222.114 ( 63-158-222-114.dia.static.qwest.net.). From my residential account at home, Google DNS works, using the same route through, 63.158.222.114 . I've moved DNS support to OpenDNS at this point... Anyone else experiencing this?

[Prism TV] How much MBPS do I really need

$

I am a CenturyLink customer however I'm looking to change providers because they are not honoring their contract. I currently have Prism TV + Internet - I believe the internet is 10 mbps which is what is eligible with Prism TV. In looking at Cox Cable and other providers I'm told that I need 50 mbps. Is this true? If 10 mbps worked just fine from CenturyLink, wouldn't this be sufficient from another provider as well? I feel like I'm missing something. I use the internet to stream video from netflix and for basic email and chatting features. Help is truly appreciated! Thank you!

Getting CenturyLink internet service for the first time...

Just moved to another area in Florida and it seems that Centurylink is the trusted provider in my neighborhood. Since Brighthouse failed several times trying to setup our internet we decided to assume the pack mentality and called Centurylink. That said, I ask; What should we expect from their service? we decided to purchase the modem and get the 40 Mbps internet service stand alone since we mostly watch local channels. -- "Evolution is God's way of issuing upgrades."
