CenturyLink Gig Internet/Prism TV

Does anyone know how they plan to service (if at all) apartment buildings where there's a bldg with multiple units? I live in a complex where there are 26 buildings and 6 units in each bldg. The above mentioned service isn't here yet but, its available at a relative's house thats a 3 minute drive from where I'm at. So I'm guessing it won't be too long. However, I'm curious how they would install in apartment complexes such as mine.

Only options we have for internet is Time Warner Cable and Centurylink. However Centurylink only offers 10Mbps to my house on their website. How accurate is this information? Anyone use them? I was hoping that they would offer their 1Gig speed to my area and I have heard that you can get it if you are in the right neighborhood. The current service I have is 50/5 and I have been unimpressed with the 5Mbps upload to say the least. Still waiting for my ISP to upgrade my node. Is Centurylink's service 10/10? I don't think that 10Mbps down would work in my home but could use it just for my VPNs. Sorry I was kind of all over the place but wanted to try and ask as many questions as possible. Thank you for your time.

Centurylink no longer accepts AMEX

Received an email today that Centurylink will no longer accept American Express cards for Bill Pay. Strange for a large corporation such as Centurylink, but alright. I log in to my account and try to change my recurring bill payment from an AMEX to a Discover Card - no dice. Try adding my Visa, no dice. It looks like their system is not working or is overloaded from the number of customers logging in to change their payment method.

[CenturyTel] Loop length too long for bonding service?

I currently have 6MB/512 service (fastest offered in my area). I called CL to see if I could get a bonded line, and they said it was available in my area. We set up a site visit/install. The install day came and went, no call from the tech or anyone from CL. After an hour on the phone I finally get the technician's notes; he stated that I was too far from the CO for bonded service. I didn't think that loop length affected bonding two lines, has anyone else ran into this? Here is some of my information from my modem/router (C1000A): SNR: 13 dB 21 dB Attenuation: 36.0 dB 21.0 dB Power: 19.8 dBm 12.5 dBm WAN Type Selected: ADSL-ADSL2+ Estimated Loop Length: 6006 Line Mode Selected: G.DMT Transport Mode Selected: ATM-LLC Bridged

Hi, can someone in Minneapolis who currently has CL gigabit fiber post a tracert to google.com? I'm interested to see the hops it takes and where peering occurs. Thanks!

Seattle, WA - Queen Anne getting GB installed 1/20 - Questions!?

Question: From the ONT to the router, is a VLAN required? My current VPN router cannot do VLAN tagging. Can they set the VLAN native at the ONT or remove it or is it required? If I have to toss my current VPN router what is everyone else using? I need high bandwidth so GB is a must and most VPN routers are very slow on either egress or ingress which is not an option. Summary: 1/20 CL is coming to install GB service. I previously had Comcast and then moved to Wave when they became available. Had them for about a year and they have been good with very few outages or problems. My fiance and I work from home. I am a Cloud Evangelist for Red Hat and surely can use any and all bandwidth I can consume. Yes, Cloud Evangelist is my title and I assure you it's a real thing and not something I made up. Currently, I have my coax feeding into an SB6190 which then connects to my VPN router. From there I split up the network to each floor of the home and use GB switches and CAT6 on each floor. Pretty simple and straightforward setup. I won't get into specifics like port forwarding, internal VLANS, routing, or QoS and such as that doesn't really matter.

Leaving Centurylink/Qwest after 39 years.

I moved to Colorado in 1977 and got phone service from Mountain Bell. Later USWest then then Qwest. When DSL internet came around I stayed with Qwest and now Centurylink. I had always been happy with the products and services. I also recommended them to others and was kind of a go to guy if anybody had any issues. For the last few years I would call "Loyalty" every year and be able to keep a good price, no big deal. I also upgraded my services many times and used to be able to get free modems when I did. I actually had three accounts at one time when my daughters moved out and good old dad paid for their internet. Times have changed and for the last couple of years it has been more of a hassle to call and wait on hold. In 2013 they required me to have auto pay and paperless billing to keep my price. In 2014 they required a 1 year commitment but I was still good with them. I had reliable 20MB/800KB service and I was over provisioned and getting about 26 MB down. Even with the new taxes and fees I was happy. In 2015 the only way I could hold my price was to upgrade to 40/5 pair bonded service. I did and had to buy a new modem. From the get go I had issues and needed several tech visits to get things to work. Things worked OK for several months but then problems started again. A technician came out and could not find a matched pair of lines and ended up cutting my service back to 40/2, but I was never able to come close to 40 MB down. The C2000T would show inconsistent up/down numbers and I would have a lot of VOIP drop outs and trouble with web pages. Tried several different modem and router combinations but still had issues. Every time I would get a new modem, billing would charge me full price, and I would have to go to a local Centurylink store to get things straightened out. I do have to say that for the last couple of months things have stabilized and have been working well. Next week my commitment is up and it was time to call Loyalty again. They could not hold my price again and wanted an increase and a 2 year commitment! I am unwilling to sign up for two years after my experiences this year. I called (gasp) Comcast and signed up for Performance 75 internet only for $49.95 a month. Bought a Arris 6183 modem at Costco and was hooked up yesterday. What a difference! First speed test showed 90MBS down 6MBS up! All my "toys" seem to be happy. I hate the idea of going back to the cable company after not having their services since 1997 (I have DirecTV). I guess I have to play these games since it is the way these mega monopolies work and control the internet now. Maybe next year Centurylink will give me a new customer deal, which I would take, if they would upgrade the copper wiring in this 40 year old neighborhood. Somehow I don't think that is going to happen.

NID question

I currently have 10 Mbps connection, but contacted CL and have scheduled an upgrade service to a bonded 25 Mbps. I know I'm in need of a rewiring job, I'm currently connected to the test jack just to get a stable dsl connection. The lines at the nid are brittle, you touch them and they start falling apart. I just need install 1 line for the DSL, I also have a dial tone for incoming and 911 that I may install if it isn't too hard at the same phone jack. I'm looking for anyone who can tell me what type of cord I need and how to wire this up at the nid for the bonded DSL. I will be needing about 35 - 40 feet of wire that will run on the outside of the house and enter into my living room. I also plan on buying a new wall jack. I've included a photo of my nid. As you can tell, there is a handful of lines that I don't even use and would be fine removing them from the box. I only need one working line for bonded dsl. Thank you for your help.

Centurylink DSL Ames Iowa

Is it some kind of cruel joke that I have called Centurylink 5 times now trying to upgrade my service and have been hung up 3 times, given my story 5 times, keep getting referred to "loyalty department" and "retention department" and am currently sitting on hold??? What is this? I'm about ready to switch to Mediacom due to the inept, incompetent, customer service I get trying to call in.

CenturyLink FTTH (GPON) showing odd speeds when using own router?

$

Hey all Got my Netgear R8000 to work with my fiber box via PPPoE, however I'm getting some odd results in terms of speed. With CL's 2000T router, I can pull ~900/900 Down/Up when I go fiber prism->2000T->eth0. However, if I swap in my r8000, I only see ~300 D/U going prism->r8000->eth0. I thought that maybe the firmware on the R8000 can't go above that speed or something... ... But here's the strangest part: if I wire up prism->2000T->r8000->eth0, suddenly I'm back to ~900MBit. I'm guessing I'm just missing a setting or something in the r8000 to get it up to the high speeds I see in the 2000T. Any ideas on what might be keeping the r8000 from hitting its peak speeds when wired?

Hello, I am a Centurylink customer Download speed is like 1.2 megs and upload is like 120 kbs: I was actually going to make a post last night, but then I checked my in-game latency and I was back under 20ms. Right now I'm back at 80-90ms, which is what has been usual for the past month. I'm usually at 20ms and loving it. You could say 80-90ms is nothing to complain about, but a jump from 20ms feels like a lot. Like something is wrong and it's been weeks. The servers are in Los Angeles, currently running a tracert, let me paste the results (I ran them last night and everything looked fine): 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 77 ms 79 ms 80 ms nv-74-4-128-1.dhcp.embarqhsd.net [74.4.128.1] 3 85 ms 81 ms 79 ms 67.238.110.173 4 79 ms 83 ms 80 ms 206-51-71-169.dsl.centurylink.net [206.51.71.169 5 * * * Request timed out. 6 86 ms 83 ms 87 ms 63.146.27.102 7 91 ms 87 ms 93 ms cr2.la2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.129.98] 8 87 ms 84 ms 86 ms 12.123.249.73 Hop 9 through 30 is just "Request timed out" so I'm assuming there's protection on those hops or something. Do you guys know if Centurylink blocks websites or could that also be part of a routing issue? Thanks for your time.

Considering dropping CL and going back to Wave

Customer service with CL has been terrible! I have had more than a few times where the ONT goes offline for no reason and reboots and CL tell me they see no issues on their end. I can confirm the router is not resulting in the issues as the same things happen with my CL router and the Ubiquiti Edge. I am the first person (as I am aware of) in Queen Anne to get their Gig service and I rely on the internet for work (work from home doing software/data center engineering) so when the internet is down I am dead in the water. Am I the only one who has constant issues? CL said they will send a tech out but it will be more than 10 days. I think I only have 30 days to cancel so that would put things really close. Thoughts?

Bye bye good quality Netflix

Now that Netflix is blocking VPNs, even in the same country VPN connections, I can't bypass the CL poor peering anymore. At least not with the VPN that I use. I get this error with Netflix. CL just sucks as an ISP, it really does. I'm lucky to get 480 quality videos on Netflix. I get HDX quality on Vudu and full quality on Hulu.

So I was playing Call of Duty: BO3 and all of a sudden, my ping hits to 400+ and sits there. I disconnected my wireless devices and Lan except PS4 and it still was in the red. What can I do to stop this? I have 3 down / .7 up connection and my ping usually stay around 30 - 50 ): .

[Embarq] How to get something done about atrocious service on Hood Canal

$

I've had Sprint --> Embarq --> CenturyLink DSL near Brinnon, WA for about 10 years. It's never been very good service. The last several years I've paid for 10 Mbs service. Occasionally, I actually get it. Then it becomes almost unusable, going down to 1/10 paid for service or less. I complain. After spending hours with support, they eventually admit it's their fault. They are oversubscribed and are unable to support their customers. It will be fixed real soon now. I've put in many complaints to the FCC, but they seem to be "informal" complaints. I get back a letter with an explanation and promises that they are working on it. This has happened so many times it's becoming untenable. Unfortunately, there is no alternative, not even satellite, because we are in the forest. Lately, there has been about a two week cycle of good to bad service. It's like CenturyLink is switching between several regions, going from good to bad to good to make it appear they are fixing it. When I get back a letter from the FCC and CenturyLink, there is no way to respond. No email, no street address, etc. Take it or leave it is their attitude. I am not alone. There are probably a hundred or so customers out here who get the same poor service. What can we do to get CenturyLink to actually do something that solves the problem?
