Yesterday I received a sales letter in the mail saying that my usage profile was that of an "extreme techie" and that speed upgrades were available in my area.
I called Centurylink support and found out that my service, which was provisioned at 6Mbps download could be upgraded to 8Mbps. I gave the go ahead to upgrade the line.
I was previously getting in the very high 5 Mbps to nearly 6Mbps when speed testing this line before the upgrade. They said the upgraded speed would take effect by end of business day yesterday.
I have been testing since last night and now my connection is testing out in the near 5Mbps range. 4.8 Mbps on average. When I search my address on the small business site they say my address qualifies for 5Mbps. I was operating just fine at 6Mbps before so now I'm wondering if they actually downgraded my speed to 5Mbps instead of upgrading to what their phone rep said was available to me (8 Mbps).
Is there any way to find out what they have me set to? I have (2) DSL lines (2) accounts in my house and only upgraded one account to the new speed just to see how reliable it would be. I test both lines and one is consistently at the 6Mbps speed as before and the one they say they upgraded to 8 Mbps never tests out over 5Mbps now. I have a horrible feeling this is going to be like explaining brain surgery to a phone rep at Centurylink if I call to complain and wish I would have never called for the "upgrade" at this point. When your dealing with such slow speeds every little bit helps...
My current configuration is both modems are bridged and connected to wireless routers. I believe I'm in a former Embarq service territory and notice the advertising in our area went from up to 10 Mbps to up to 20 Mbps...

High Latency when uploading
Whenever I put a heavy amount of traffic upstream (backup or upload) on my circuit, my latency will increase from 20ms to around 2500ms during an upload, causing my entire connection to become virtually unusable. Also, I am seeing quite bit of Near End FECs. Can someone explain exactly what is happening? Here is a sample ping output from my computer (upload started at 29ms)

As you can see above there is a speed test from this very website showing how terribly slow centurylink is. We have two lines to try to allow everyone in the house to use the internet at the same time, about 2-4 people usually. Charges per line almost $64 a month... I'm sure you can see how ridiculous that is. These speeds are pathetic, and to make things worse centurylink is the ONLY available isp in the area, Hughesnet may have become available recently but who wants Data Allowances. I can't stand centurylink, almost as if they ask their employees in customer service to be rude as fuck to everyone. I pray for the day another provider comes to the area.

[CenturyTel] Faster DSL available?
Hi
Would a Centurylink tech please tell me whether they have upgraded their network in my neighborhood and/or added a DSLAM closer to my home so I could get their 3.0 mbps tier? My circuit is 103.401.977 (at least thats what I've been told) Thankyou.

upgrade from 7mbps to 12mbps CL says C1000z not compatible?
All, I am a little stumped. I thought the zyxel c1000z would work for higher speeds that what I have.
I found that my area is only allowing up to 12mbps up from my 7 i use now. After a little online chat with them i was going to get the upgrade then the chat person asked for my modem.
They stated it would not work because it is a VDSL modem. But my modem right now states on the DSL status page that I am ADSL2PLUS. I am confused.
Enough rambling. Do I really need to upgrade the modem?

DSL Transport Total Usage?
My questions is does the dsl transport total usage in the modem configuration equate to total data usage during that time frame?
I recently installed a Centurylink dsl line (40mb w/ 250 cap) and have been monitoring my data usage. I have only two devices using this line mind you (pc and ipad). I've been monitoring my usage locally from my pc and noticed some major discrepancies. Over the past 11 days I've logged roughly 25gb of data on the pc in addition to maybe 4gb from the ipad. When I went to check to see if there was any sort of data usage monitor in modem configuration I noticed the "dsl transport total usage" was over 70gb; roughly twice what I had calculated I had been using. I watched this number carefully over the course of 2 hours and noticed it stayed roughly in line with my pc usage over that time, but suddenly it jumped close to 700mb out of nowhere. Is this normal?

[Qwest] Public /29 IP block behind C2000T in transparent bridge mode?
DSL Modem: C2000T in transparent bridge mode
Router: Mikrotik RB2011 w/PPoE client on Eth1 ("WAN interface")
WAN interface: Eth1
LAN interface: Eth2
PPoE client works fine and dynamically gets the gateway from my CTL issued public /29 block. Devices on the LAN interface (with DHCP handing out private /24) can communicate with the outside world just fine. Setting devices to an address from the public /29 however does not work (devices are connected to Eth2, or the LAN interface). I cannot ping the PPoE issued gateway IP of the public block, or obviously communicate with the internet.
How are you dealing with public blocks and transparent bridging on your devices? I'm hoping seeing some configs/examples (no matter the device) will help me understand what I'm doing wrong.

1000mb service wiring
I am having 1000mb service installed at my house in Wake Forest, NC. As far as I know the house only currently has phone and cable service. I will be doing DirecTV and fiber. If I recall correctly, there is maybe Cat 3 or 5 in the house but it is spliced (at least in the attic) with those old splicer things that used to be popular for adding another jack. I am wondering how to wire the house so the install goes quickly.
I know where I want to put the modem/router. I don't think there is existing wiring in that location. Would I just do a home run Cat 6 to that location from the NID on the side of the house and wire it for ethernet? Or is there something else involved with the fiber install?

Apples TV drop streams buffering issues
We recently switched from Comcast to Century link 1 gig service and Prism TV. Overall the charge has been well worth it, and performance is great, except our Apple TVs. We have several Apple TVs, including two new version 4s. They all worked perfectly before the switch streaming content from Apple, Netflix, HULU, etc. All of the devices are hard wired to a gig switch which is connected to the CL2100T modem/router. While on Comcast I had a new Time Capsule I was using for the router. CL insisted I move to the CT2100T and directly connect each of the Prism setup boxes to the modem/router and remove the TC.
Since the switch we are unable to watch more than 15 to 20 minutes of a video stream or movie without it dropping completely out and needing to be resumed. We also see occasional buffering issues with the little gear spinning, and the stream continues. Apple gave me a list of TCP and UDP ports to verify are open and they are open.
Early on we had terrible connection and the tech had to re-clean the fiber connections which were generating large numbers of errors. Now the techs see nearly zero errors on the line.
I might try reconnecting the TC as the router and see what happens.
Anyone have thoughts or ideas?
thanks

Centurylink in Neighborhood
I live in a neighborhood just outside of Manitou Springs, CO that is currently serviced by Centurylink for phone. No Centurylink internet offering is available for most of the houses. In a few weeks, there will be an HOA meeting to discuss the state of the internet as well as what can be done about it. I would like to propose to the HOA board to work with Centurylink for setting up HSI within the neighborhood, but don't know how to get the conversation stated with CL. Any suggestions?

Updated Minneapolis speed test map
I re-ran the addresses contained in the map in this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29723767-Minneapolis-Centurylink-Speed-map-Including-Fiber-rollout-
(Direct link: http://www.easymapmaker.com/map/6347814ae5d946a2fcc4cd60647ca456)
New map from data gathered last night: http://www.easymapmaker.com/map/cl_speed_1-15-2015
So there are now traces of gig internet in Hopkins and St. Paul (uncheck everything but 1000 at the bottom to see them).
I have a python script that runs the addresses to check their speeds, and I hope to update the map from time to time to see the progression of CL fiber.

[CenturyTel] Call log for customer's phone on website?
I was wondering if CLink's website has a section, for the customer (me) that I can see what callers (numbers) have called my landline? I know my cell website has such an option, and was wondering if the landline company has this option also... Main reason for asking...to somehow be able to 'block' unknown callers...just like my cellphone has that option(or rather the cell rep can do that for me).
Anyone?

Question about CenturyLink Speeds with VDSL and Pair Bonding
TL;DR: Can any VDSL connection be bonded?
Background:
I've had CenturyLink since I moved into my current neighborhood about 6 years ago. Started with an Actiontec GT701-WG modem at 7Mb/? (can't remember what the down speed was, maybe 500ish Kb). Signed up to be notified faster speeds, and eventually got 12Mb/896Kb. I believe I had to do a firmware upgrade on the GT701. Still signed up to be notified for faster speeds, but never heard anything.
Recently did a chat with a rep and asked if there was any information or plans for higher speed. I was told 20Mb was now available at my address, but that my modem would need to be upgraded. $100 to buy one from them, plus $60 install. I mentioned that the specs say the GT701 is good for up to 24Mb down, and they said I needed VDSL2 modem. I said I'd look around for my own modem and contact again later.
I did a bit of searching here and found that the ZyXEL C1000Z was a fairly high rated modem that seems like it would do what I needed. For me that meant being able to be setup for my current speeds in the mean time, and be able to handle the new service. Found a used one on Craigslist for $20 and got it installed. I also did a bit of reading in general since I hadn't really kept up with DSL technologies for a while.
Contacted via chat again and asked about upgrading to a faster speed. They asked me about my current modem and I told them I have the C1000Z. This is what I was told:quote:"Okay, great! Let me see if that is compatible with 20M+, all of the ports for 20M have been taken already. I do see that you will have to pay a tech install charge of $59.99 to upgrade to the 20M+."I then asked about the install charge since I had a working modem and compatible modem. I was told:quote:If the 20M was available, you would be able to upgrade with no tech fees. Since you would have to upgrade to the 20M+, you will have to have a tech come and configure your line for the upgraded speed. With 20M+ you get more than 20M download speed and 5M upload speed. This was actually better news for me, as I didn't realize the upload speed would be 5Mb. I also realize now that it makes sense that they may have to do more work if it means verifying the lines for VDSL, and that if it's wasn't VDSL my older modem would have probably worked just fine. That also got me thinking more about what I had been reading and I was wondering if pair bonding was available to get me to something like 40/5 or 40/10. I also realized that the C1000Z I just got wouldn't work for pair bonding, but I asked if it was available anyway. I was told:quote:You will not be able to do any pair bonded speeds because you are not in a GPON area. Which basically means, fiber Internet is not available at your address. So I agreed to the 20/5 increase and was told it will be a couple weeks out for a tech to do the required upgrade work. I came back here and did some more looking/searching, but I'm still a little unclear on the requirements for pair bonding. Just wondering if what I was told was technically true, policy, or just wrong.
Other information that may or may not be useful. I just use the modem/router in transparent bridge mode to feed my own wireless router. My connection from the CenturyLink box on my house to my phone jack is cat5, about 20 feet long to my phone jack, then directly to the modem.

CenturyLink Gig Speeds
Greetings-
I have had CenturyLink's Gig Fiber service now for several months. The service is OK. There are times I wish I had Comcast again. CenturyLink is offering me more bandwidth but it seems less than what I am paying for. But things seemed to load or buffer quicker or buffer less or hold a higher video streaming resolution with Comcast.
That all being said. I am wondering what I or CenturyLink can or will do about my connection? Here are my results.

Connecting Prism TV set-top box to a new router
Hi,
I recently switched my CenturyLink Modem to bridge mode and I'm using my own router for everything. I have 2 PRISM TV boxes that are currently using wired connections to my router. I wanted to use the wireless connection on the non DVR box, but it still connects to the wireless on the CenturyLink router/modem and it can't see my DVR box because they are on different networks.
I've tried looking at all of the settings screens and I don't see a way to change which router the set-top box is connected to or re-start the WPS process. Any ideas?
