Was recently switched from ADSL to VDSL, new speeds incoming?

I recently took Centurylink up on their $45 lifetime fee offer, switching from my existing yearly promotion and dropping my landline. Went fairly smoothly. They tried to tack on $40 for some sort of "promotion switching" fee (the tech's words) to the current billing cycle, but I was able to dissuade them at the cost of an hour of my free time. Anyway, a few days later my internet goes out, I notice a ticket on the support site. I wait it out, ticket is concluded, but I still can't connect. Another hour with a tech, turns out they switched me from ADSL to VDSL. One modem swap later, I'm good to go. But I'm also wondering why they bothered to swap me in the first place if they're still only offering up to 10mbps in my area (a tech confirmed this is the max available, "but they're always upgrading yadda yadda.") You guys think they're planning on offering new speeds in my area soon, or is there some technical reason that would explain this? I can share my modem stats later, but for what it's worth I've always received rock solid ping times and speeds that are actually a bit higher than what I pay for (in the 10-13 mbps range), which as an MMO'er is perhaps the best praise I can give Centurylink.
