Actiontec Q1000 Ping Times Skyrocket

Today I noticed a problem with my Actiontec Q1000 wireless router / modem. Internet slows to a crawl, and I did a ping test using 8.8.8.8 from 3 linux machines on my network, and my windows 7 desktop and laptop. They were all in the 5000ms and above range. I rebooted the router from the web interface and pings across the board dropped to under 100ms. After awhile, anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour, the same issue cropped up again. I rinsed and repeated and the pings came down again. I even power cycled the router but the same thing keeps happening. I have not changed any of my router settings, or did anything new with my LAN. I do have a lot of wireless and wired devices on my LAN however and was wondering if there is something I should be looking for that is causing my Q1000 router to "load up" or whatever is happening. I have a number of switches, but no additional routers or subnets on my LAN. Just several computers, both Linux and Windows 7, smart phones, IoT's, embedded linux devices, and a few ESP8266 modules. Again though, nothing is new on the LAN since about a month ago. Is the router going out? Is there some additional tests I can run to check DSL voltages on upstream and downstream? Or any other tests I can run? When I cycle, speedtest.net shows stellar performance, for awhile. I haven't done anything freaky with my LAN other than experimentation with my ESP8266 modules. And they are not sending or receiving anything strange according to packet sniffing those devices. Also, diagnostics performed via the web interface show everything as passing. Both before the issue and during even. I have not tried speed tests on the wireless access yet to rule out the wired connection with the router. I was hoping someone else has had this same issue and might have some advice as to what to look for or change in my settings. I did not post my settings yet but will if asked.
