I just had gigabit fiber (advertised at 1,000 Mbps on every part of the ordering site and in the order confirmation email CenturyLink sent me) installed in my home in central Denver, CO.
I have fiber into the ONT and then Cat5 from there to an Actiontec c2000t. I got the Prism TV service (cheapest package) because the bundle was cheaper than standalone gigabit Internet service.
After installation, I checked the modem admin tool and saw that it was connected at 1,000 Mbps down / 1,000 Mbps up. I then connected my laptop directly to one of the Actiontec's LAN ports and ran CenturyLink's own speed test tool. 40 Mbps down / 5 Mbps up. WTF?
I called tech support and was told by 3 different techs that my Internet connection was this slow because of the bandwidth reserved for the IPTV service. After patiently explaining that that is B.S. because there is no way the TV service needs 960 Mbps down and 995 Mbps up (modulo overhead, of course), they are sending a tech to my house. I know the TV service will take *some* of the 1,000 Mbps bandwidth, but this is insane.
I'm *really* hoping that this is just a mistake and confusion about what is a relatively new service for the CenturyLink techs to support.
I'll keep this thread updated with how it plays out, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this or a similar issue?
Is there a way to access my full bandwidth in the meantime, even if it disables my Prism TV? The router is connecting via IPoE instead of PPPoE (I gather that that is what you see with IPTV). Can I get my PPPoE credentials from the modem and connect with that instead? Guess I'll give it a try.
Anyway, if you have "gigabit" FTTH from CenturyLink w/ Prism TV, run a speed test to make sure you're getting what you're paying for!
