Centurylink speeds...

I live in central NC. Here lately my speeds has normal(10mb service) The seems to stop, then super sonic speeds to "catch up". Are they having issues somewhere that is effecting my speeds? Every time I check with speedtest.net or Centurylink test. The ping is around 16=25mS. Speeds are showing 9.89-11.1mb which is normal. You can see the light(internet) on router STOP blinking. Then all of a sudden. It is blinking so fast it is looking like a steady light. Then slows down to normal. I have unplugged the modem/router to reboot several times. It doesn't seem to help. Have bridged the router and used another router, same issue. Any suggestions. Oh I have the Zyxel PK5001Z modem router

CenturyLink 1 Gigabit speed cut in half using my own Asus Router

I picked up the Asus RT-AC87R router today and I FINALLY got my own router to work with my 1Gig service. I went into the router's settings >> LAN >> IPTV >> and set the VID to 201 for Internet. Entered my PPPoE credentials and the Internet went live! My download speeds will not go past 375Mbps. The upload is just fine, but download is not. I did read online that there can be issues with this and that I have to enable NAT Acceleration. So I went back into my router's settings, clicked LAN >> Switch Control >> NAT Acceleration is set to "auto." There's a disable option, but that's it. I also saw an "Enable Jumbo Frame" option and I turned that on to see if that would help, and it did not. Any ideas? Thanks!

CL Internet Repair is useless and wrong

The automatic Internet problem detection system that CenturyLink uses appears to be completely useless, inaccurate, and more akin to a "joke" than a service. Just went through this again, following almost the same exact script that I know so well. , Big damaging storm in Wisconsin Sunday evening July 12 Monday morning July 13 after storm has passed, try to use CenturyLink DSL, and it doesn't work. (Gilman, WI phone exchange, Ruby remote terminal) I'm using: -- CenturyLink EQ660R-F1 wired DSL modem in bridged mode (CL's history of crappy internal router software bypassed, NAT session table exhaust keeps choking the connection) -- Asus RT-N56U A/N/G wireless router with huge NAT table capability Power cycle everything, Asus router boots but just says Jul 13 16:17:03 pppd[478]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets , I called CenturyLink Internet Repair at about 8:15 AM central daylight time. AutoBOB says "Checking your service ... almost finished.. no problems were found" Talk to representative. The heavily Spanish accented fellow does the usual script, has me power cycle everything even though I already did that, and says he can't find anything wrong, but the modem is an old one so they will mail us an upgrade. I say fine, and send us a wireless-capable one this time, and we need the Internet ASAP so can we get it overnight? We will pay extra if needed. Rep says not necessary, and modem should arrive Tuesday. , About an hour passes and I decided to go check the DSL at my brother's house across the road on the same remote DSLAM. He has the wireless Centurylink modem. When I call Internet Repair for him at about 9:15 AM on Monday, AutoBOB says "A problem has been detected, technicians are already working on it. Resolution expected by 8am on Tuesday July 14" Next I try calling Internet Repair for our phone number at 9:30 AM, and AutoBOB has changed the story and also says a problem has been detected, already working on it, blah blah. , Tuesday July 14 arrives, and what do you know but the DSL with our "old" CenturyLink modem and Asus router suddenly starts working again. (Image goes here, why did DSLreports move it to the top of the post?) [att=1] But no "overnighted" replacement wireless modem arrived on Tuesday (yesterday). Does it even matter now? I may just put it in storage as a spare in case of future problems. , So apparently, as demonstrated here, CenturyLink's automatic nationwide self-diagnostic service is basically useless. It can't tell them in advance when there are problems occurring until people start calling and complaining, and the "automated service" instead ends up just wasting everyone's time and effort. Oh well, at least an unnecessary new wireless modem should arrive some day, to use as a paperweight. -- CenturyLink remote pedestal: RUBY, 10 miles west of Gilman, WI http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20533172-Rural-Century-Telephone-remote-terminal-unit http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20530745-Name-of-this-polemount-outdoor-telco-canister

[CenturyTel] Marshfield MO, what's your Centurylink experience?

$

Living in Marshfield MO and have had Centurylink for several years. Actually have 2 lines coming into the house (1 personal, 1 business) and I'm a bit of a ways from the origin source, so 6 mb down is about the max of what I can get. I'm paying for that, but usually only get around 3. 5 if I'm lucky. Right now it's about 1.5 and the down is horrible, not even a quarter of a MB. According to my router/modem (TP-Link W8980), they're shooting almost 7 mb through the line to the house. But somewhere it's bogging down. Curious to know what anyone else in town is experiencing with CL. I thought getting rid of CL's crappy PK5001z modem/router would help, but no dice.

Is it just me, or is the C1000A a POS?

Greetings, all. I've been with UsWorst/Qworst/CenturyBlink for ~15yrs. On the whole I've had fairly stable service. But the problems I have had, were (needlessly) *really* frustrating. My issue here is that due to some bookkeeping error (their side) my service was disconnected. A half hour on the phone, and they indicated that they'd escalate my re-connect, and I'd be back in business in about an hour. 2 days later, modem (DSL) light just blinks. I call, and ask what the hold up is. They say it must be a line issue. They'll send a tech out on Monday (it's Friday). I state this is a *real* issue for me, as I've already been w/o service for 2 days, and they're going to make me wait another 3? My modem was working flawlessly w/o any incident for 4yrs. running, and now I've got a line issue? Somethings fishy. So I go to Goodwill, and grab the first comparable modem, for a total cost of 5.99. I bring it home, and plug it in. Guess what? Yep. After entering my username/password, the modem trains up just fine. I could have ended the whole thing here, and call tech. support, and cancel my ticket. But it's not that easy. I lease a /29, and the modem I just bought at GW doesn't support this, nor rd6. So I decide to call tech support, and kill 2 birds with one stone; I tell them that I was told when I ordered the new service when I moved out to my new home that 20Mb was available, and that 40Mb would be arriving. I'm only on 5Mb now, and I'd like to upgrade to the 20Mb service, and since it's an ATM, I'd like the tech to bring out a Technicolor C2000T. A great deal of argument ensued. Really? I solved the problem on my own. Since the tech is already scheduled to come out. Could you please ask him to bring out a C2000T. I'm trying to *help* both CenturyLink, as well as myself. What's the problem? Oh we send modems by UPS, and the user doesn't get to choose the modem they receive. Uhh what? Fine. I'll *buy* the modem. The tech doesn't even have to get out of the truck. I'll meet him in the driveway. CenturyLink receives more money from me. I get the service, and the modem. Problem solved. Well no. I could go on. But I'll share that in a different thread. Long story short(ish) I end up with an Actiontec C1000A. Not a bad modem, or is it? The tech hands me the modem gratis, to replace the one they wedged. Seems like a reasonable deal. Even tho I still intend to have to retire it for bonded, and 20Mb. But still, I guess I can live with it. So I take it inside, plug it in, and set it all up. Seems to work well. I like it. But out of the blue. It starts cycling. What?! Out of nowhere, and without any provocation, it simply reboots! Grrr. Well I find a CenturyLink store that isn't too far away 2hr. round trip, and grab a replacement. This one does the same. 5 CT1000A's later, same issue! What to do? There is an error in the log that doesn't look good, and leads me to believe that eventually, a buffer simply overflows, and causes the modem to cycle: 2:00:41 AM System Event XdslMediaSearch: current media(0) --> 0x10608700 01/01/1970 12:00:43 AM System Event Line 0: xDSL G.994 training 01/01/1970 12:00:48 AM System Event eth4 (switch port: 11) Link UP -1 mbps half duplex 01/01/1970 12:00:48 AM System Event eth5 (switch port: 12) Link UP -1 mbps half duplex 07/13/2015 01:57:53 PM System Event eth3 (switch port: 0) Link UP 100 mbps full duplex 07/13/2015 01:57:53 PM System Event eth2 (switch port: 1) Link UP 100 mbps full duplex 07/13/2015 01:57:54 PM System Event eth0 (switch port: 3) Link UP 1000 mbps full duplex 07/13/2015 01:58:04 PM System Event Line 0: ADSL G.992 started 07/13/2015 01:58:08 PM System Event Line 0: ADSL G.992 channel analysis 07/13/2015 01:58:11 PM dhcp6s[2074] dhcp6_ctl_authinit: failed to open /etc/dhcp6sctlkey: No such file or directory 07/13/2015 01:58:11 PM dhcp6s[2074] act_load_binding: ifp->pool.pltime equal to 0! 07/13/2015 01:58:15 PM System Event Line 0: ADSL G.992 message exchange 07/13/2015 01:58:15 PM System Event Line 0: ADSL link up, Bearer 0, us=918, ds=5174 07/13/2015 01:58:18 PM Ethernet Ethernet client connected ,ip(xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx), mac(40:61:86:f6:aa:2a) 07/13/2015 01:58:40 PM PPP Link PPP server detected. 07/13/2015 01:58:40 PM PPP Link PPP session established. 07/13/2015 01:58:40 PM PPP Link PPP LCP UP. 07/13/2015 01:58:40 PM System Event Received valid IP address from server. How to calculate maximum rates possible?

Hello, all. Everything I've read seems to indicate that my provisioned rate is at least ½ of what I'm capable of. I'm currently at: DSL Downstream: 5.174 Mbps DSL Upstream: 0.918 Mbps But when I bought my new house, (Qwest) told me 20Mb was also available, and 40Mb was coming. This was 3½ years ago. Obviously, it's CenturyLink now. Anyway, here's my current signal strenth: SNR: 20 dB 17 dB Attenuation: 37.0 dB 17.0 dB Power: 21.5 dBm 12.3 dBm Is there a calculator, or equation to use to determine the maximum rate? Thanks! EDIT: It just occurred to me I forgot to add that I'm on POTS (single pair), and ATM.

Why (almost) no internet on DSL? Modem OK, line OK.

After 9 days and 4 hrs on tech support, still baffled. Just purchased 3rd modem, no success. Here are the symptoms: -Working fine with CenturyLink DSL and NetGear modem for years, and suddenly, things stopped working. (Latest modem is even CenturyLink branded, i.e. Zyxel PK5001Z.) -Android device gets email just fine on TouchDown app (IMAP), but gets no web. -All computers (Mac, Win) get no web on Safari, Firefox. (Note: I am a Mac guy, don't test Win much.) -Mac email client, Mail.app, gets no email. (I don't use Win for email.) -Mac will very slowly, partially load a web page (bare bones, no images etc.) -Ping shows can connect just fine -2 hrs on tech support with CenturyLink DSL -> "Everything is fine, the line is stable" -2 hrs on tech support with modem company (NetGear) -> "Something is wrong with your system, try another computer, or exchange the modem". Yeah right. Have tried 4 computers. Have bought 2 new modems in 1 week. -DNS issues were suggested but can resolve domain names in Ping, so not an issue. It seems to me that something happened with CenturyLink or the line to "break" our connection. I guess at some higher level in the TCP/IP stack? Maybe they reconfigured their software somehow? Please help, this is beyond ridiculous & frustrating.

Centurylink Modem

I am new to CenturyLink and this forum. I have the Actiontec c1000a. I have done the bridging and connected an airport extreme that cuts out the internet periodically. the Actiontec c1000a ran solid for a month without issue. anyway the question is, since everyone seems to disconnect the router from the CcenturyLink router modem and just use the modem portion, isn't there a pure modem (not modem/router) somewhere that could be hooked up that would work that the router could then be hooked up to, rather than disabling the router portion of the modem router? I am not a techie but this doesn't make sense. thanks.

[CenturyTel] ADSL Line Quality And Port Issues

I recently put a service call, to have a CenturyLink Tech come out and check my DSL Line. I've been having problems with line resyc issues. My SNR is always below 12db. During the daytime hours it's between 6 to 9 db. When the SNR gets that bad my modem will lower it's training speed. Just to stay under 10db. Beside the line issues. I do have a AM radio station site near me. That is full power during the day. And on reduced power at night. That a trade off I have to work with. The CL tech said not much can be done about the AM Radio interference. In my current ADSL configuration. So next the CL tech went out and did a complete line check on the following locations. First my NID box at home which has a home run filter already installed. Then Pedestal (Ped Box) about 30 to 50 feet away. And finally Distribution Cabinet (DC Box) that service my neighborhood. The CL tech took a meter reading at all three locations. And found that Attenuation and SNR signals did not change much. So next the CL tech decided to check other wiring pairs at Ped Box and DC Box. To see if any unused pair of wires might be in better condition. Then the pair I was currently using. The CL tech did find some pair wiring that had better meter reading at Ped Box and DC Box. And proceeded changed my wiring over to a better pair. CL tech then come back to my NID to see new line meter reading. There was some improvement to the line quality. But still my Attenuation and SNR signal did not change much. So now CL tech told me the only place left. Is to make changes at the DSLAM Port. The port as it turns out is housed out of my local central office over a mile away. Now I have to wait and see if any port changes are going to be made. I've been on the same port since 2002. [Qwest] Changing Download speeds

$

I'm sorry, the subject line may sound deceiving in a way since I'm not going to be asking how to change my speed, but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head to put in there. Anyway, let me start: Not quite a year ago I decided I wanted to upgrade to a higher tier speed, I was using the 1.5mbs Centurylink service, so I looked up on Centurylink's website for available speeds in my area. Checking it at the time I saw that I could get up to 7mbs, which isn't fast but for years I'd been stuck at 1.5 and told there were no higher speeds I could get. I jumped at this chance, called them up and talked to someone about upgrading, they confirmed the 7mbs was available and that they could upgrade me to which I gave them my permission. After confirming the order was put through they told me to wait 5 days, unplug my router at 5pm, leave it unplugged for 10 minutes then plug it back in. 5 days go by, I do this and see I went from 1.5 to 3. Since it was past 5pm I couldn't call them that day since I'd only get automated messages, so next morning I call Centurylink. I get put through to a tech, only to be told by him "There is no 7mbs service in your area. The fastest speed is 3mbs." I argued with them for about 10 minutes about this until finally giving up and they ended up giving me a discount on my phone bill for the next 6 months. A few days later I went to download a playstation game and realized I was downloading faster than I had been for the previous few days. I opened my browser and checked my modem settings and noticed that I had gone from 3mbs to 5mbs. I went from August to early January with the 5m speed, then had some problems with random disconnects so called up Centurylink and they sent out a tech to check my lines. He promptly fixed it and left, but upon getting online noticed my speed had gone back down to 3m. I called Centurylink back and told them I was having problems with my speed, that it was slower than what it had been. They asked what my previous speed had been, I told them 5mbs, they looked into my records and told me that 3mbs was highest I could get in my area and that I may have been mistaken. After telling them I had the faster speed for nearly 5 months they continued to tell me I couldn't get higher than a 3mbs service in my area and that somehow I had to of mistaken something to think I was. Again, a few days later. I started up Netflix to watch a series. While being at 3mbs I could only watch stuff in standard definition, but when I started watching I noticed it was in HD. I go to my pc, open broswer and see I had gone back up to 5mbs. It was like this until about June, when I noticed I had gone from 5 to 4, which I was a bit annoyed with, but not much as I could still watch HD on netflix and youtube without much problem. Now, within the last weeks my speed is now back at 3, which is very annoying since I'm back to standard def, and losing that 2 megs has added hours to downloading a game. What I'm wondering, is there something on their end that's causing it? I just don't see how something on my end could be doing this. Also, is it actually possible that, if they wanted, they could offer a faster speed in my area than they say they can? For almost a year of getting 5mbs service, and having them telling me that its impossible and only 3mbs is all I can get, I feel like they're calling me a liar.

Upfront cost of fiber installs, vs profit from the install

Did you know that the theoretical top end speed for a single pair of fiber is somewhere in the Terabits per second? All that phone companies will need to do to get future bandwidth improvements is swap out the "old" gigabit fiber module with a 10 gigabit, then with a 40 gigabit, then with a 100 gigabit, etc, and boom faster speeds with no fiber changes. , All this whining and bitching by phone companies that they have to replace decades-old copper with fiber effectively means they will not have to upgrade that fiber for about a century or more to get continuous performance improvements. So while they may have gotten maybe 25-50 years of life out of the copper in the ground now, the fiber likely won't have to be touched for maybe 100+ years. , But they just can't *afford* to upgrade each of us rural people to gigabit fiber, because the upfront cost to upgrade us would hurt their next quarter's net profit. Oh, the calamity! Forget the fact that they will be raking in profits from that one-time fiber install for us rural people, for possibly the next century or more. -- CenturyLink remote pedestal: RUBY, 10 miles west of Gilman, WI http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20533172-Rural-Century-Telephone-remote-terminal-unit http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20530745-Name-of-this-polemount-outdoor-telco-canister

Did CenturyLink sell parts to Frontier?

I got a weird letter in the mail from Frontier telling me they service me. I called them up and they said that I am now in their coverage area but not in the system yet and they are having engineering check it out. CenturyLink currently has our area and I have never before received anything from Frontier until now. The only differences lately have been TWC who ran all new lines to us and will be providing service by year end. So why this change for Frontier? They didnt buy any of CL's areas have they?

Have really been seeing new fiber being put up in and around Fremont and Ballard in Seattle recently - and just saw today a splicing truck doing work on multiple spools and what appears to be a FDH (Fiber Distribution hub) right near Brown Bear Car Wash near 39th. I have 250/30 w/ Comcast right now - but will be tempted to try out C'Link's offering once they turn these areas up.

This is more of just a question to satisfy my own curiosity more than anything lol. I was recently told by an engineering tech that the DSLAM that I'm served from has an OC-12 link. 622/622 MB capacity. Does anyone have a general idea of how many customers would be served from that link to saturate it. I know that if everyone subscribed to the max tier that's available here (10/768) would be approximately 62 however I'm sure not everyone has that package. I also know ISPs tend to oversubscribe anyway given that it's very very unlikely everyone will max out their connections at the same time. I'm thinking maybe 100 to saturate that line to where normal use would be impacted? I'm not sure though this is why I posted here for people that are closer to ISPs than I am. -- Dual 10/768 CTL DSL

Gigabit fiber + Prism TV = slow Internet

I just had gigabit fiber (advertised at 1,000 Mbps on every part of the ordering site and in the order confirmation email CenturyLink sent me) installed in my home in central Denver, CO. I have fiber into the ONT and then Cat5 from there to an Actiontec c2000t. I got the Prism TV service (cheapest package) because the bundle was cheaper than standalone gigabit Internet service. After installation, I checked the modem admin tool and saw that it was connected at 1,000 Mbps down / 1,000 Mbps up. I then connected my laptop directly to one of the Actiontec's LAN ports and ran CenturyLink's own speed test tool. 40 Mbps down / 5 Mbps up. WTF? I called tech support and was told by 3 different techs that my Internet connection was this slow because of the bandwidth reserved for the IPTV service. After patiently explaining that that is B.S. because there is no way the TV service needs 960 Mbps down and 995 Mbps up (modulo overhead, of course), they are sending a tech to my house. I know the TV service will take *some* of the 1,000 Mbps bandwidth, but this is insane. I'm *really* hoping that this is just a mistake and confusion about what is a relatively new service for the CenturyLink techs to support. I'll keep this thread updated with how it plays out, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this or a similar issue? Is there a way to access my full bandwidth in the meantime, even if it disables my Prism TV? The router is connecting via IPoE instead of PPPoE (I gather that that is what you see with IPTV). Can I get my PPPoE credentials from the modem and connect with that instead? Guess I'll give it a try. Anyway, if you have "gigabit" FTTH from CenturyLink w/ Prism TV, run a speed test to make sure you're getting what you're paying for!

Centurylink 1.5Mbps DSL and gaming, I need suggestions please.....

I just moved to Parowan, Utah and called Century-link (the only internet service available?) and they politely told me that all that is available is 1.5Mbps DSL. Well, I am a heavy online gamer (wired if possible) and my wife streams Netflix and Hulu (Wifi) on her Apple TV usually when I am gaming and I would just like to know exactly what my best route to go with this service would be. I am primitive in my knowledge of routers / modems, but am not afraid to get into the nitty-gritty if that means a faster connection. I've done some browsing here on DSL Reports and there's a thread here similar to my issue: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29656752-century-link-dsl-what-s-the-best-modem-router-for-gaming I can grab a Zyxel PK5001Z off Ebay for $30 and "Bridge it" (I don't even know what that means, or why to do it) with the instructions here: http://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/modem-pk5001z-adv-bridging-q.html But I'm concerned because Centurylink writes: "Support for this function is offered for CenturyLink business customers only." Anyways, I'm sure some of you have made 1.5 DSL work for you and I haoe we can make it work for us for we're going to have to:) Thanks.

POP email (pop.centurytel.net) worked this morning, but this afternoon I get an internal server error when I try to check my mail; webmail works OK. I have tried switching from SSL to an insecure connection, but that did not help. I am using Thunderbird 31.7.0 on Windows 7.

Fiber (semi)unavailable to current customers but available to new?

If I look up my address at https://www.centurylink.com/fiber/plans-and-pricing/minneapolis-minnesota/ it tells me that yep, I'm good to go for gig fiber. If I tell them I'm a current customer and log in to my account, they offer no more than 12Mbps DSL. I called, and they said it's "a glitch" but sure, they can hook me up - then quoted prices $30/month higher than advertised on the web. "Can you match the web price?" "Nope." Has anyone else had this experience? At this point I'm tempted to order it as a new customer, and ask them to port my existing Centurylink number to Centurylink, and watch the gears grind to a halt at Centurylink HQ. ;)

CL to expand Gig service in Eagan, Mn

http://sunthisweek.com/2015/07/15/centurylink-to-expand-gigabit-internet-service/ "The expansion was made possible, in part, by a new, more cost-effective method for installing the fiber optic cables, CenturyLink officials said. In the past, a trench was dug to lay the cables, but now the company can create a slot in the ground, slide the cables inside and fill the hole with a strong polymer. “This new method significantly reduces the cost of laying fiber,” Haggerty said. Eagan will be the second city in the nation for which CenturyLink has used this new method."
