[CenturyTel] using 3rd party VDSL2 bonding modem from DrayTek (Vigor2862B)

Hello TalkToUs@CenturyLink, Prior to moving in early December I used to have a CenturyLink 40Mbps VDSL2 non-bonded connection and was using a DrayTek Vigor2860ac modem with absolutely no issues from October 2016 until I moved two months ago. The performance of that modem was very impressive...better than anything I had before. Since the move I had to get a different modem that supported bonding because I didn't want to use yours (again). I haven't used your modems in many years. I now have a DrayTek Vigor2862B (the 'B' is for 'bonding'). I copied all the settings from your Actiontec modem that was installed by the CenturyLink tech including the VLAN 201/tag 0 and MTU 1492 settings but there are occasional dropouts on both of my computers and both of my Rokus and I am trying to figure out what I may need to fine tune to make that problem go away. The settings on the modem are default except for what settings I changed as a result of looking at the Actiontec modem your tech provided. The connection seems to be very stable for over an hour or even 2 hours at a time, then drops out for sometimes as much as a minute, then comes back without me having to do anything. I don't know if increasing the MTU to 1500 is the answer and/or changing the VLAN 201 tag from 0 to something else would resolve the dropouts. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks, Steve

Timeout once per minute?

Hey all, Trying to figure out why I have input lag in online games and fired up ping plotter. I have a timeout that seems to happen once per minute, at the exact same time. I don't understand what this could be. Does anyone have an idea? For context, I'm running 80/20 DSL and I'm a mile from the Centurylink junction building. Running in transparent bridge mode currently, but really just to troubleshoot. Here is a link to my ping plotter results over a 10 minute span. https://i.imgur.com/erJrxnd.png Should I call Centurylink for this? It results in 4.1% of regular packet loss.

Goodbye and Good Riddance CenturyLink!

I've been a captive Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since 2007. Since that time, I've endured countless outages, bandwidth exhausts, evening high latency, and a multitude of billing issues (I know I'm preaching to the choir here...) Since 2007, I've had two (2!) increases in bandwidth - in late 2007 I was given the ability to go from 5 to 10Mbps, and in 2013 I was able to upgrade to bonded DSL to go from 10 to 20Mbps. I know that I'm actually fortunate with those speeds when it comes to legacy Embarq territory as a huge number are still stuck with less than 10Mbps. Enter West Carolina Tel (https://gigupgreenwood.com) - a local fiber co-op that is headquartered in an adjacent county. Through the grace of the broadband gods, they have begun fiber deployment in our area and recently have begun construction in our neighborhood. They offer symmetrical gigabit speeds with no cap (price list here: http://wcfiber.net/files/documents/042617_GREENWOOD_WCFIBER.pdf). Needless to say, I will be dropping CenturyLink the day my fiber order is placed and is turned on. It will be a phone call that is a long time coming. P.S. If anyone is interested I will document the fiber install with some pictures.

Good CentryLink

Since most posts are about problems, thought I'd make a good one. Got CL through CAF a few weeks ago. 40/5 price for life. Constantly seeing 45/5+ and stable (knock on wood). Suspect it will stay good since modem indicates only 180 ft. of DSL, rest is 8 mi. or so of new fiber and equip.. Install went easy using existing 30 yr. wire. "Soon" finally arrived, about 20 yrs. later. Worth the frustrating wait using everything from various dial-up, satellite and cell configurations. Only issue came when I decided to purchase the C3000Z modem they sent me and save the rental. Took about an hour and multiple contacts to have them double charge me for that. Quick call back got that fixed. Life is Grand!

Anyone know of a network map for Qwest?

I can't seem to find a network map. It's important to me because I know qwest allows for threading the pppoe connection and I'm not sure if the other absorbed companies under century link's umbrella support the same.

Centurylink 140/20 questions

My family is prepping to move to Rio Rancho, NM. The home we are buying is served by Centurylink and Cable One. Not exactly my first two choices if it were up to me. Centurylink is offering 140/20 for $65 / month. Not bad considering the source. They are telling me that the service is FTTN , with VDSL from the node. From my reading on VDSL, 140mpbs down is a bit of a stretch. Maybe if they are bonding? So I'm wondering if anyone here has some insights in to the provisioning methods Centurylink is doing these days. I'm hoping they are wrong, and this is FTTH, but not sure I'm that lucky. I'm also curious as 100mbps service doesn't require a technician install, the 140mbps plan does. Which makes me wonder if different technologies are in play....... The only reason I'm really considering this over Cable One is cost. Cable One 200mbps down, 10 up with 1TB cap is $155 / month. Anyway, any insights that can be shared are appreciated! Grimmwit

Getting online "Price for life" for existing customers?

My parents had a CenturyLink Phone/Internet bundle. Their promotion ended (last December) and they decided to discontinue their phone and just go with just Internet. They requested a "downgrade" to 20 mbps for $45, but the bill still shows 40 mbps for $55. I noticed that CenturyLink is advertising 80 mbps for $45 (online only). But I don't see any way for existing customers to get this price. Has anyone been successful getting this price as an existing customer? I figured that I can tell my parents to disconnect and then sign up again, but I'm not sure they can handle the disruption of service (especially now that they have an VOIP phone service). Also, would they need to change modems going to 80 mbps? They have ZyXel C1100Z which on the CenturyLink website goes to 80 mbps. When you order online they don't give you an option to have your own modem. Do you "lease" and then cancel? Or is it better to "buy" and then return the modem?

[Qwest] Open ports on C2100z router?

Wondering what ports should be open by default on my C2100z router? Have PrismTV and 100/50 internet on FTTH. . No gaming. 2 switches with 4 AppleTVs' and 3 computers. Port scan shows TCP ports 80, 443, 1990, 7681 and 30005. The last 2 seem to be more suspicious, so wondering if others with prismTV also show them open.

Pair-bonded bridge mode - C2000T

I have C2000T Technicolor that is set up for pair-bonded DSL. It works fine (I have been using this as a back-up route - I work from home and the internet is the life-blood of my business). I am trying to connect it to a load balancer. All I need its to set it to bridge mode. Yes, this should be easy, but after countless hours of web surfing, four hours of testing configs (and testing 3 routers to verify the modem was passing traffic), along with four calls to CenturyLink, I need to make a decision. The C2000T simply will not all a router to pass traffic via bridge mode. CenturyLink believes this is due to it being a pair-bonded set up. BACKGROUND - We all know CenturyLink does not really support putting modems into bridge mode, however they will walk you through the basics - Configurations can vary be region - Configurations vary based on VDSL or ADSL as well as if CenturyLink bought a previous ISP - Level 2 tech support did not have a single case of doing, or successfully doing, bridge mode with a pair-bonded DSL - Their only recommendation is to replace the C2000T modem with a different one – but no guarantees that it would work even then DECISION TIME I have exhausted the possibilities of getting the C2000T to work in bridge mode without being a LOT more technical and tweaking stuff that may not be able to be tweaked and would likely break with a firmware upgrade or some changes at the DSLAM. I don't have time to chase a custom config like that. What I really want is a solid bridge mode. At this point the speed on this circuit, which is my secondary route, is not as important as a solid connection. Would you suggest: 1. Downgrade to a non-pair-bonded service? If yes, what modem would be best for Transparent Bridge Mode? 2. Change the C2000T for a C2100T modem. Is the bridge mode really different between the C2000T and the C2100T? (No I don't have Prism TV) 3. Another post discussed using a DrayTek Vigor2862B. Is this a viable and solid option now without a lot of technical tweaking? Thanks for any replies.

Billed for nonexistent DirecTV service

My sister recently established new service from CenturyLink for Internet only. Her first bill contains $100+ charges for DirecTV. She has never had DirecTV and doesn’t have TV service from anyone. The two companies are pointing fingers at each other for how to resolve this. I’m at a loss to explain this one, any tips for getting this resolved?

12Mbps DSL Modem w/ new service

According to the century link website my address qualifies for 12Mpbs. They offer to sell a “mystery” modem for $100. Can anyone offer a guess what model they would likely send? Is there a more future proof model that would support what I am assuming is legacy service? Thanks

C2100T SSID Issue

Hello, After rebooting my C2100T the 2.4 Ghz SSID (SSID2) that I have setup for guest access becomes inaccessible. It still shows up in the list of available networks but no devices are able to connect to it. When I disable and re-enable the SSID it begins working correctly again. The 5 Ghz SSID (SSID2) does not have this issue. Has anyone else had this issue? I figured I would check here before attempting to contact CenturyLink. Thank you!

[CenturyTel] Century Link C1100Z & Bridge mode

Hello, I am currently with CL and have the above router/modem combo, I don't like it so have bought a good Asus router which I plan on using instead. My line is VDSL 40mb/s and it usually gets about 20-25mb/s on a good day, in the evenings its painfully slow, I've scanned the wifi using wifi scanner, there are no good channels on 2.4ghz, so thats why I'm getting this new router, so its 5ghz, we have many devices that are dual band. My question is, is it a big job changing this specific router into bridge mode, I have seen mixed reports. I plan on connecting it to my computer by ethernet cable, then changing to bridged mode and then is that it? just hook up the router and we're good to go (remove the ethernet cable and connect via wireless) Thanks for your help

[Prism TV] No NBA TV On Prism?

Went to watch the 76ers game last night when I got home from work, and finally realized that Prism apparently doesn't carry NBA TV. I seriously didn't think CL was missing any higher viewed channels before this - but is this true? (Yes I realize I'm probably answering my own question, but seems strange they'd be missing a standard Turner provided channel) :-)

Friend wants to buy modem/router

She's been leasing for over a year, and she has two modem-routers that CenturyLink gave her over that period (due to a swap-out, who knows if they both actually work right), but I'm not easily finding a DSL-router replacement, and am just wondering if she can use either one of the devices without paying a lease (even if it means purchasing one of them), or where we can find a device to purchase so she doesn't have to pay the lease. I know one of the devices is a PK5001Z, and I think the other one (which she's using at the moment) is the same or similar model number (maybe with a different number or letter).

Centurylink randomly downgraded me to 7mbps from 20mbps

I was on the small business 20/2 bonded speed in a 5 year contract. A few days ago one of my lines stopped working. I figured it was because it was raining (I always have issues when it rains, it usually fixes itself when the ground dries) so I didn't call them. Anyway a few days later I got a letter in the mail saying "here is your new plan" showing "speeds up to 7mbps" while still paying the same insane price as before. The letter is acting like it's somehow an upgrade and like I asked for it. It was hell to get bonding in the first place because nobody seemed to know what it is and everyone would always get confused when they found out I had 2 lines. I'm sure someone messed something up and it's going to be hell to fix it again. Has anyone experienced this??

CL Fiber+ (GPON) vs Comcast Enterprise Fiber

Hi Everyone, Trying to get some unbiased advice for a client of mine. Currently, my client has Comcast's enterprise fiber, currently 80/80 and is costing them about $699/month. Their contract is finally up for renewal and I'm helping them explore other options. Currently, CenturyLink is in the area and they are offering Fiber+ in their area, which I think is also known as GPON (something like that). We can get 100/100 for about $250/month, so a significant discount from what Comcast is offering us. What I'm trying to figure out is it there are any big differences between these services. I met with my Comcast reps yesterday to discuss our options further, and asked them how their fiber compares to CenturyLink's. The Comcast tech in the room actually worked for CL for many years and gave me his opinion, but most of it was over my head and I wouldn't expect to get an unbiased answer from my Comcast team. In a nutshell he obviously said Comcast's fiber is better and more robust compared to Fiber+, but that's about it. With that said, we've had zero issues with Comcast and I generally hate CenturyLink as a vendor as they've given me many headaches over the years, but I'm willing to look past that. I have one client with GPON (Fiber+) fiber in their office, and it seems to work just fine other than he gets a little less than the speeds he is paying for, where as with Comcast I feel you always get a little more with Comcast. Anyone with a more technical background able to enlighten me a little bit. Saving $450/month would be nice, but I know not everything is obvious on the surface. Location is Eagan, MN (Minneapolis Metro)

Will CenturyLink ever Modernize Eventually?

$

Hello, I want to ask some of you your opinion on what YOU think CenturyLink is going to do when their services are threatened from the likes of Starlink or 5G? (My internet was much better at Comcast and that was 12 years ago) I have been to many Cities and countries world wide such as London, Liverpool, Beijing, Seoul, and others in America, but the worst Internet service I have seen to date are right here at my home in the United States. So when I say I would love to say good bye to CL I deeply mean it. So, 5G could soon bring me MUCH faster broadband within the next few years and Starlink will put some where between 7000 and 12000 Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellites with near fiber like performance at 3-20ms latency and at half the cost of CL. So, would this force CenturyLink to modernize and start bringing truly great services, or would they just ignore the threats and allow their services to go further into the toilet as people dump them in droves? Like I plan to do once I can. I am just curious if anyone here knows how corporate CL thinks and what, if anything, they could do to compete. Do they already have something that will future proof their broadband services in rural areas? Or are the old copper lines just too limited to do anything? I am sick and tired of overpaying for my 25Mbps speeds (nothing but a lie when I pay for 40/5) that can't even maintain simple Youtube or normal 1080p Netflix streams. Your opinion on CL's future plans please. I am curious. Thanks
