Sudden Speed Increase?

$

I can hardly believe it but this morning I got 41 mbps on the Netflix fast.com and 36 mbps on the speedtest.net speed tests instead of the 24 mbps that I normally get! In shock I ran the DSLR test and got 40 mbps on that! Can anyone explain the sudden increase? Is CL trying to spread holiday cheer?

Question about DSLAMS.

I am curious about DSLAMS, I know my DSLAM is fiber fed. I am just curious what kind of bandwith does that fiber line have/bring to the DSLAM. Download and upload speeds? Id really like to know lol. Thanks.

[CenturyTel] Recommendations for replacing ActionTec PK5000

I have big problems with trusting CL and for good reason with years of game and lies from CL with down throttling. So for me to call them was like the last thing I wanted to do. Like one guy said he would rather have a root canal than call CL. I totally get that. My Actiontec PK5000 wireless went out yesterday but the Ethernet still works on it. When I got this unit via Qwest they gave me IP number so I could look at my modem software. When CL took over then one day I was not able to access the modem software. Instead, up pops a window asking for user name and password which I was never given. So for years now I have been locked out and not a word to me about this change. Also when I called ActionTec years ago to see if I needed up dates they said CL controls all updates. I don't like the over reach of this company with the modem and updates. So with this new modem I want to lock CL out. I want to control updates. So I chat with CL today got passed around 3 times. The first one said I could use ANY VDSL2+ modem. No sure if she knew what she was talking about since my experience has been in the past (and even today proved that once ) that the staff can be clueless. The second guy knew nothing more. Then I go to a tech gal. This was really disappointing. She gave me another IP number for the modem and I couldn't see it, it would just time out and fail. I gave her the IP that used to work fine for years and showed her how you have to have a username and password to get in now that I am apparently locked out and I don't have the username or password. She keeps telling me to use the username on the modem on the back of the modem. I tell her I have a key pass phrase but no password and no username. She just talks in circles and I ask her if she can get into my modem then what does the password and user name say and just says it is on the back of the modem. She then just wants me to buy a new modem from them since she says it is because the modem needs to be replaced is why I am having problems. Well I am using the Ethernet and it is working fine. She doesn't answer many of my questions either. I asked her if my modem was up to date with updates and she didn't answer. I wonder if they really can't see much on their end and maybe with these off shore chat people they have limited access to our accounts and only can address things in theory. She doesn't say so who knows what was her problem. Not much has changed since the last time I attempted to get a straight answer out of them and it has been years. I wish there were better options since I wouldn't have to think twice on that. I don't see a need to up sell with speed since Netflix with CL is just a hair over 3Mbps in April but it used to be dead last at just over 2Mbps. I use UnblockUs to get from 7Mbps to 12Mbps for 4.99 a month for my computers but it doesn't work for my tv since Netflix won't allow the VPN on the tv. I really don't want to spend anymore than I absolutely have to with CL. I am just waiting for something better to break from the pack and ready to sprint to them asap. I really do not like their corporate management. The CEO was bragging how he was able to stiff his home town of all sorts of things to get them to stay there. He is also investigated by the feds for stock in improprieties. He has been with them for 30 yrs and seems to have a choke hold on it all. I don't think other companies would hire him. I dealt with their escalation department and this guy was literally YELLING and sounded more like a staff Sargent than anyone with any business degree. He sounded like he didn't have any degree at all. They like to intimidate and some of the things he said and how he said it was really unprofessional. This company operates like no other I have interfaced with before. I don't trust them at all. The less control they have over my modem the better. They used to be dead last for streaming Netflix but now they are a tiny bit higher in April but I don't see any need to up sell my account due to all the down throttling with streaming services. https://ispspeedindex.netflix.com/country/us/ So if in fact I can use ANY VDSL2+ modem (please correct me if this is wrong) and I need a router that will play nice with that modem what would you recommend? Can you explain how I am suppose to set modem up without having to spend two hours on the phone with CL for a simple set up? Thank for any insights you can provide.

[CenturyTel] How To Close a Century Link Account

I have been on chat for several minutes and it keeps saying I have either 10 or 11 minutes to wait. It keeps bouncing around to these two time frames. I first talked to a Chris K there on chat who was trying to up sell me and when that wasn't working he switched me over to this other long wait on chat. I am getting the distinct feeling they are going to have me wait indefinitely to cancel the account. I wouldn't put anything past them at this point. Is there some online way to just cancel the account? I have stopped the June payment to them and have stopped using the service.

[CenturyTel] What do I need to do or say...

I've been a loyal US West/Qwest/Centurylink phone and DSL subscriber for years. From a technical side, I've always been very satisfied with the service I've received- DSL speed usually right up to my quoted speed, and running almost 100% uptime for both my voice and DSL service. However, my recent experiences with the Sales and Billing side are now driving me away. After needing to revise my monthly spending due to a heavy load of medical bills, I had contacted Centurylink about dropping to minimal service to be able to match my new enforced monthly budget. Very optimistic rep. was able to help me restructure things, but after two billing cycles, the new package and rates never showed up, and my billing continued at full rate. Follow-up call at that time was again very optimistic, and admitted seeing that the rate should have been reduced, and promises were again made. Still no response in the billing. Two months ago, followed up with a very polite, courteous, and careful woman who reviewed everything, and verified that there should be a $30 credit per month since the first "promise", as well as waived late fees for the partial payments I'd made to keep up with what the new rates should have been, and placing the DSL service on a 'vacation hold' for six months as I had an alternative available through the summer. Two billing cycles later, still racking up $94 a month, with no sign of any credits or changes. Today's calls, on hold for 15 minutes to first rep., then referred over to a specific billing area, holding for another half hour to a second rep., then another referral, this time to a "loyalty" department rep. After holding for another 20 minutes, gave up. What does one have to do or say to get Qwest to follow through on promises? I'd almost rather just be told, "no... like it or lump it!", than continuing with this chase. As much as I hate to say it, it looks like it's "Mediacom, here I come..." And I REALLY hate them...

[Qwest] C2000T vs C2100T

Has anyone compared the DSL line statistics between a C2000T and C2100T modem? I am curious if the SNR and line attenuation improve with the C2100T. Both appear to use the same Broadcom chipset, however, the printed circuit board wiring for the DSL input is different. The C2100T doesn't have the POTS jack and it removes the low pass filter for DSL1. Also, the overall input to the PHY on the PCB routing looks a little cleaner on the C2100T. I am unsure if this yields a signal improvement, though. I am on the fringe where I could use a few extra dB of SNR margin and attenuation. Thanks.

Negotiating a bill reduction

Currently, I live on my grandfather's property. He holds our Centurylink account, though he lives elsewhere. We're in agreement that I should take over the account. He is paying $105 a month for 10 mbps dsl and a landline. I just want the dsl. So, I plan on calling CL with my grandfather and telling them this: either he can cancel the account now, and I call back later to start a new account under the intro $35 rate, or they can save themselves the trouble and transfer the account to me under that rate. I'm fine with contracts. Anything I should be aware of?

Pinging Router

Internet has took a dive a week or so ago. How many ms should it take to ping my router? 192.168.0.1 This is when I ping it from Terminal on my Mac. Would these numbers when pinging just the router mean the router is bad? Because pinging the router is just checking the connection between computer and router? [Qwest] Used technicolor c2000t not holding settings upon reboot

$

I purchased a used c2000t off of eBay. I hooked it up and first off it didn't auto detect the DSL settings for my line, which my actiontec c1000a did. No biggie as I manually entered them from what I saw my c1000a had selected. My main problem is the modem doesn't save the settings upon reboot, it goes back to default settings every time I reboot it. I noticed the power supply that I got with it says "for c2100t only". This being a c2000t not a c2100t, I ordered a replacement power supply for it, hasn't come yet. If anyone can give some thoughts on why this happened and if replacing the power supply may help or not have any effect.

C1000A serial access

I am trying to access my c1000a modem via serial headers. I am using a USB - UART serial device with the pinout header as outlined on https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Actiontec_C1000A_(CenturyLink) but I can't seem to receive or send any data. I verified that my serial cable is 3.3v. Just to make sure everything worked I tried a PK5001z and was able to see the boot process just fine so I am pretty sure my hardware is good. The C1000A modem is functional. I can boot it up just fine and see the admin page, but serial doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone attempted this with success?

CL just screwed me. After 1.5 years got a letter that I owe $30. No previous contact with CL. I paid it because to try and dispute it is hopeless with a collection agency involved. Going to try complaint with BBB + CL and anyone else I can find. Had my own C1000a and nothing else from CL.

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?

Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area? Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line. Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe? Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

Zyxel C1100Z, and two old PK5001z, all three same issue?

$

I've got a somewhat new for us from the tech who helped modem. The modem is a Zyxel c1100Z, ment for out 25MB line. It works, no real issues until a couple days have passed or when its decided to throw a fit. The issue also occurred on a few older models we had when we only got 10MB DSL. The issue in as best as I can describe, is that after a while any and all NEW traffic will be blocked and receive a bad DNS error. Traffic that is still ongoing when this occurs, can continue to function normally. For example, I'm streaming a video and it has 30mins left to buffer. This video will continue to download, no issues. If I try to say, watch a new video, or go back a page which needs to be refreshed I will get a "Failed to load page, Check DNS" kinda error. I can continue to talk on VOIP apps when it occurs as long as I don't disconnect. To remedy this issue, I always have to power cycle it till the next time it happens and it will. The techs at Centry have no idea whats going on, they just keep saying to buy their new modems on a lease. (Their own tech gave us this out of an unopened box). This issue has also happened on 2 other Zyxels, PK5001z. I think it strange all three would do the same thing. I have updated the firmware, made sure its not overheating. When the tech last came out, they had fixed an open box outside that had been grounding the line. When they fixed that, the 10MB PK5001 seemed to work for an entire week with no issue. So maybe there is still some kinda grounding going on that's causing the modem to trip itself? I have no clue. I have access to the modems GUI, so if you need information to help me then I will gladly provide it. Any and all help is appreciated as I would like to stop having to power cycle this every other day just to use the net.

T-mobile/ASUS router drops connection, while C2000T holds it

I'm CenturyLink VDSL customer with bonded-pair service. In my opinion, Century doesn't have router with features I need (NAT loopback, advanced port forwarding, 5GHz WiFi...) So, I was using Technicolor C2000T as a modem, in a bridge mode plus T-Mobile router (which is re-branded ASUS RT-AC68U). Router configured to connect via PPPoE. And I noticed, that I often (few times per hour) losing my Internet connection for brief periods (5-15 seconds). While that happening my router shows Internet status as DISCONNECTED. While troubleshooting I removed the router and enabled build-in router of the Technicolor C2000T and now it much better. Here is link to Before (T-Mobile router) / After (Technicolor C2000T) graph as drawn by PingPlotter: https://slavikf.com/Shared/Router.png I was thinking, that it is only modem responsible for Internet connection, and router just handles my LAN. Obviously I was wrong. But I do not understand - why is it? How router can contribute to WAN disconnects? Should I get new router or can I somehow configure it to be more stable?

Technical reqs for 12mbps DSL? CenturyLink don't know

Unfortunately, I am not having any luck getting past clip board pasters. It's very obvious when their response doesn't come out of canned script and they always insist further assistance is only available by voice call on the phone and when I call, I just get "our system says" crap. CenturyLink's website asks for service address to ensure accurate service offering availability which is inaccurate non-sense at best. Sometimes they show 12mbps available and lets you order it online, but only as a new customer. As soon as I log-in to my account, I'm greeted with "please call us" or 7mbps as the highest available depending on the mood of their website. CenturyLink Chat Rep quote: "I'm sorry but we have limited access about that. But normally if an upsell is unavailable in the area means higher speed is not yet able to support by centurylink". This is what my line looks like and my research suggests the line should be able to handle 12mbps at ADSL2. When I call, they say 7mbps is the best available. If a new customer moved here and selected 12mbps, what would they get? Or are they only lying to new customers under the cover of "up to 12mbps" to mean achievable speed that is "not exceeding 12mbps" ? CenturyLink is doing DSL vectoring to their remote cabinets in the Des Moines area and I've seen it takes peoples lines down they would have to get a new modem or their modem would require a firmware upgrade. Interesting nobody from CenturyLink told us that this was happening.

C2100T Transparent Bridge

I had a tech visit today and he was kind enough to give me a C2100T free of charge. I want to put it in transparent bridge, but when I do so, I just keep getting flashing DSL lights after resetting the modem myself and cannot get internet after doing so. I have tried factory reset with putting a pin in the back, but that doesn't really factory reset it, unless I do so in the GUI. Any ideas why the modem is in a limbo state?
