Can't enable bridge mode in c1000a (Resolved)

I run my own router/firewall and so prefer my modems run in bridging mode. My old Motorola ran ran great for over 10 years this way. My current Zyxel does too but I don't care for it. So I got my hands on an Actiontec c1000a but I can't seem to enable bridging mode for it. The CL instructions are quite clear and easy. But after hooking it up to my laptop in order to configure it and hitting "Apply" to enable bridging on the appropriate config page the menu returns as if nothing had happened. Same thing after a reboot of the modem. I'm pretty sure this is not normal; after enabling bridging I expect the modem to behave like a brick that can't authenticate i.e. I shouldn't be able to get to the modem's config pages. At least that's how my previous modems behaved. This is my second c1000a and it the behavior is the same for both. It works fine in non-bridged mode and the firmware is the latest that's listed on CL's support page. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
