Building firmware image for C1000A or other Actiontec modem

I have some time off this Christmas and, as a possible project, I was thinking of customizing the firmware for my C1000A modem. Has anyone done this before? I've downloaded the open source files published for the CAC003 and CAC004 revisions of the firmware and built what look to be root fs images for CAC003 so far. It doesn't produce .bin files, so it looks I have might have to break into the cfe boot loader and use that to flash new firmware. My main issue is that on a successful build, although a new file system image is created, it looks like only the kernel and a few modules are created from source. The rest of the userspace code (httpd, busybox, etc) is pulled from a compressed tar file that was inside the open source tarball. So there's still lots of closed source code that isn't available and can't be modified. Specifically I was hoping to re-enable SSH connections to a user shell on the CAC004 image as well as configure the atm interface to respond to multiple IP addresses (I lease a block of four from my ISP). Normally I have to run a script in a telnet session each time the modem reboots to add the ip-addresses, add snat entries to allow for NAT-Loopback, and other customizations. Yes, I could probably put it into transparent bridge mode and add a router to my network, but where's the fun in that?
