How to diagnose slow speeds without automatically blaming CTL.

Howdy there all! I'd just like to preface this with some facts here. I've been in IT for over 17 years. I've owned several computer repair businesses, I've done more networking than I can remember. For the last year now, I've also been working as an RSA for CenturyLink. I'm the guy you call to get technical support from. I'm also the guy you yell at, call a liar when I say the line is trained full speed, no errors, looks great, and you're refusing to do a speed test using a hardwired connection. Well today, I'm gonna show you how to check what speeds you're actually trained at (assuming you have a centurlink branded modem) First step you're going to do is, using a computer that's connected to your centurlink internet connection (You'll want to make sure you're connected to the modem, not a third party router), you'll open up a browser and enter just these numbers into the address bar. 192.168.0.1 Hit enter. From there, depending on the modem, you'll be presented with either a login page or 5 circles in the middle. If presented with a login page, the information you'll need to login to your modem is listed on the side, under "Gui Admin Username" Once you're logged in, you'll want to click on "modem status", then scroll down and have a look on the lefthand side. Under "connection status" you'll see what you're trained at. My modem is currently trained @ 45/5. I'm paying for a 40/5, so my lines have been overprovisioned due to clean lines and stability. That's a feature of CenturyLink that's pretty common. Connection Status: Qwest® Broadband 45117/5119 Kbps ISP Status If you're seeing you're trained at the speed you're paying for, but still getting slow speeds, then your issue is NOT with centurylink but with something else. That issue could be with things such as, wireless interference (Not a centurlink fault) poor computer connection etc. Hope this helps!
