Nearly 5 years ago, I rewired the Cat3 telephone wiring in my house with Cat5e cable, which caused a big boost in the speed of my 7Mbps Centurylink T1.413 ADSL connection, but it still wouldn't run full-throttle. In addition, at times the speed would drop to around 4Mbps and I needed to call CenturyLink DSL support to have them reset my connection. After the reset, my connection runs at about 6.8Mbps, which is where it usually tops-off.
A year ago, I purchased a ZxXEL C1100Z from a CenturyLink store, which is my first modem that, at times, runs at 7Mbps! However, this modem exhibits the same connection speed stability problems like all of the other modems that I've used. I received feedback on this forum that I should bypass the wiring inside my house, by connecting directly to the jack inside my network interface box, and then measure the connection speed. However, this is tricky for me to do and I decided that it's too much effort!
About 7 weeks ago, I called CL DSL support because the speed of my connection downshifted to 4Mbps. However, CL changed their procedures and it was necessary for them to send a technician to my house to measure the speed at the network interface box, before they would reset my connection. If the speed at the network interface was 7Mbps, I would be charged for this service call. The connection speed was restored to 6.8Mbps without me receiving either a phone call from the technician, nor a charge for the service call!
A few days later, my DSL connection reset during prime time and my modem synced-at 7Mbps, which I've never seen before! Now my connection consistently runs flat-out and I believe it's because CL fixed a problem in their network! If you compare the attached DSL Status web page with the values in my earlier thread, you'll see that they are identical.
It's been a real pain for me to get a stable 7Mbps connection and now I know better than to become a professional DSL network technician! :)
