Basically, I have 10mbps service, and since a thunderstorm last night I've experienced intermittent dropouts and speeds of around 3-5mbps when it does work. It's worth noting I've had these problems on and off over the past few weeks as well, though sometimes I get a rock steady connection at 10mbps for days at a time. Additionally, there's audible static on the phone. Ping is low at 20ms or so (my fancy NIC probably has something to do with that).
My setup is rather simple. I have a single CAT5 with two of the wires soldered directly to two wires coming into the porch (old house, they never even installed a proper demarc box, just a pair of wires). The relevant wires in the CAT5 are terminated about 20-30 ft away, crimped to an RJ phone plug, which plugs to the modem/router. The router provides Wifi and a wired connection to my PC, another connection to the satellite box, and a phone hooked to the phone port. The phone has audible static, whether hooked to the phone port or wired directly to the phone wire.
Given all this, and the low SNR value of 8.5 dB (which fluctuates), I'm convinced that the outside line has an issue, since what little interior wiring I'm using is all twisted-pair. Do you folks have any thoughts?
