Prior to this summer, I had 3 Mbps DSL Internet from CenturyLink with very few problems whatsoever. A couple months ago, I started experiencing a slower-than-usual connection as well as frequent disconnects and retrain errors. I called CL and a guy came out and determined that the CO modem was not trained properly. He claimed to have fixed the problem but I continued to experience slow speeds and frequent disconnects and retrain errors. I called CL again and the same guy came out and told me that, despite everything having been fine before then, my speed was too high for my distance from the CO. He lowered me to 1.5 Mbps and assured me that I would not longer experience any issues. I specifically asked him if my modem could be the problem and he said absolutely not. Well, I continued to experience issues so I swapped out my PK5000 for an old 2Wire and the issues seemed to disappear. That brings us to this week. Suddenly, my speeds are slower than ever and my modem is once again disconnecting frequently and taking forever to retrain. I've been trying both of my modems and I have similar outcomes with each. The modem is connected directly to the NID with a brand new phone line. And I have only DSL service (a.k.a. no phone). I'm pulling my hair out, knowing that I'm going to have to call CL again and possibly deal with the same guy as before, so I'm hoping for some guidance from anyone out there who may have some ideas. Should I break down and buy a new CL-approved modem or do my stats suggest any other potential problems?
