Twice in the last few months I've had a CenturyLink VDSL2 modem fried by a power outage (both units were C2000T). A plain-vanilla power outage does something to the innards such that DSL service works but landline handsets in the house get a constant busy signal--the only fix being to unplug the DSL modem. As the DSL modem is plugged into a good UPS with surge protection, the obvious culprit is the incoming phone line.
So I figured I would install a phone line surge protector (my UPS does not have RJ11 jacks), and bought a simple APC surge protector (http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Essential-SurgeArrest-6-Outlet-Wall-Mount-with-Phone-Protection-120V/P-P6WT). Problem is, when I run the phone line through the APC and start up the modem, only one of the dual DSL lines connects. Tested with the patch cable that came with the APC and with a phone cable that came with the previous DSL modem, no dice. The modem status web page shows that DSL1 is connected as ADSL2+Bonding, but DSL2
What is the solution here? Is there an available phone-line surge protector that will work with VDSL2/ADSL2? Or alternatively a standard UPS device that will do this?
It looks like maybe this APC unit would be what I would need?

Only I'm not sure I could connect the grounding wire, as the phone outlet seems to be a solid unit and I don't want to tug at it without knowing what I'm doing. (I am no kind of expert at phone equipment.)
