This has been going on for 9 months. I am seriously confused, annoyed, and frustrated. I assumed this problem has been occurring because of "high activity hours", but Centurylink has told me there is no exhaust in my area (even though something is happening). I have had several techs come out, none of which could find any problems. I don't know if it's because they only come during the day when it's not happening, or if it isn't something they'll look for. I have tried a new modem, made sure it's not a wireless problem. However, there are a few concerning details with my experience with this, which I'm not even entirely sure if they would even matter to my latency issue.
First of all, the last tech who came here said that two households were "leeching off the line", but that he could do nothing except temporarily disconnecting them, even though they would probably recommend. I'm not sure how or why that could happen, and I'm not sure if that might be some issue related to the latency problem.
I contacted CL through twitter, where they sent my concerns to the higher up techs, who monitored my line for a while and responded back "there's no exhaust", and that was that.
This is a rural area, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was congestion and they were lying about it.
I'm not sure why my area would have such bad congestion in the first place, at least now. People in my town hate century link. Recently a new, small provider moved to town, and a lot of people have switched. During the summer the population pretty much cuts in half since it's mostly only populated by old people in the winter, so I hoped that the congestion would go away by the summer also. It did not, and in many cases got worse.
Usually, the latency starts spiking to 150+ at about 7pm. Some days it starts even earlier, and it can go from 150ms to 350ms. I have tried taking off every device, trying to see if anyone them are hogging bandwidth, but it doesn't affect it at all. Usually, during the day I get a mostly steady 50-80ms ping to most sites. It does not affect download or upload speeds.
The high latency occurs on every website, always starting on hop 2. It happens on ethernet and wireless, even when no other devices are connected.
I honestly have no idea what to do since I have gotten no help from CenturyLink. I don't even know if this is a fixable issue, especially if I don't even know the exact cause of this.
