Today I scheduled an end to my Comcast service and ordered CenturyLink $80 Gigabit service. Comcast raised my rate to $70 for 250 Mb service, and even a lower speed would have increased my monthly bill, so I'm going to give CenturyLink fiber a try.
Scheduled install is on 6/25. I picked up a nearly new Zyxel C3000Z on craigslist for $50, and also included a leased model in my order (which I will return without opening to avoid the $10/month lease charge). You can't order service without leasing or buying a router from CL, so I figured this would be the best option and least potential outlay of up front cash--I'd rather try to get $10 back from them (or let them have the $10) than $150.
My intention is to get the PPPOE login info and plug it into my Asus AC1900 router, then re-sell the Zyxel if everything works as expected. Comcast goes bye bye July 1st--hopefully this is enough time to get the install done and any kinks worked out.
I'm a little irked at the 30 day billing cycles for CL, but will live with it as it effectively saves some money over the post-billed $85 rate. I'll also be looking out for YouTube slowdowns/low resolution issues, and traffic problems in the evenings.
Wish me luck--I'll update with my impressions.
