I'm NOT a network person, so be kind...
About 6 months ago Centurylink switched our DSL to 20MB (mb?). After a LOT of screwing around with the person that showed up, they finally got 4 wires connected and things turned on. It's BEEN WORKING FINE SINCE THEN..........
Recently, within the last several days, it APPEARS to randomly drop the Internet connection to the desktop, hardwired PC, and sits there saying "Identifying" on the wired connection, blinking on and off. Eventually, it comes back on. Attempting to connect the same PC to the wireless provides the SAME RESULTS - the wireless connection says "Identifying" and blinks on and off.
Just got off the phone with Centurylink, who said "the DSL1 and DSL2 lights haven't stopped being green in over 24 hours." Which I presume means everything on THEIR end is fine and the problem is somewhere in the modem or between the modem and the computers?
Since Centurylink is doing the "not our DSL" thing, what should I do to figure out what's going on? NOTHING has changed here - no new cables, no hooking/unhooking, no changes to network configuration, no nothing.... Worked, now periodically, randomly, generally several times/day, it loses the connection and eventually reconnects.
I"ll pull and replace the cable between modem and desktop PC, but can someone knowledgeable provide some steps for hopefully getting this thing working consistently again if that doesn't magically fix it?
