I am new to CenturyLink and switched from Cox because of the consistent outages we have been getting in our area, and nothing was being done about it. After years and years of frustration, I figured at this point, slow internet was better than no internet. Sure Cox bill credits you for outages, but having no internet sucks even more when you're trying to run smart home devices.
That being said, the fastest they offer our area is 3mbps! There is a huge CL building down the road, and I am new to DSL, and don't know all of the terminology and what to look for as to why they only offer 3mbps in our community, when the community up the road has 140mbps.
I know that they have been trying to push fiber to more markets especially here in Phoenix, and I got the notification saying that it will soon be available in my area, which is why I made the switch to begin with.
I do have to admit, though slow, it is much more reliable than what Cox had given me, which I expected about 3-4 outages a day.
My setup is as follows, I have a CL provided modem, placed in transparent mode, and an Apple AirPort router that is actually providing the connection and routing, I have inputted all the correct settings for PPoE info into the Apple router, and its working great.
I am surprised that Netflix and video streaming actually works over 3mbps, but it does take a bit of patience at the beginning.
The fastest speed Cox was able to offer in my area was 14mbps, despite advertising gigablast, etc, and thats with brand new modems and equipment, when it did work, so I had to choose between slow internet and slower internet, which really sucks for this area of town.
Also, Cox has no gigablast plans for our area, but CL has placed notices saying that fiber is coming. How does CL fiber work compared to Cox for those who have it?
